This is the story of Major William Colby and Operation Rype. “Rype” was the codename of the American airborne unit dropped by Carpetbagger B-24s into the Snåsa mountains in Central Norway on March 24, 1945. Their objective was to carry out sabotage operations behind enemy lines with the purpose of preventing German forces from withdrawing from northern Norway to reinforce the European theatre. "If there was a moment that said something was wrong in this world to me..."With that opening, my ears perked up. Villagers forced off an island ("there may have been guns involved" !?!!?) to make way for a power station designed to last only for 7 years.I guess if you hear that violence and environmental damage are involved in a project you've been asked to design, you'd probably pull back and think again.Which is what Greg Lavery did. Seeing the wanton human and environmental damage being caused in the name of business made him think hard about what he needed to do to make a positive difference. He went back to a postgraduate study in sustainability and the circular economy, and after a systematic review of areas where he could make the most environmental impact, he set up Rype Office to make office furniture.Office furniture??? Really?Actually, yes, really. Did you know that over the lifetime of a building, 30% of its greenhouse gas emissions are related to furniture? I didn't.In this episode of the Karmic Capitalist, Greg talks about the need for purpose-led companies to make sure that they're viable, and that positive impact alone does not a sustainable business make. It is essential to produce something that the market actually wants. Rype's proposition fits squarely into that description, with office furniture designed and manufactured to be affordable, beautiful and sustainable.Rype also demonstrates one of the things I love most about companies with purpose-led cultures. That when they see a difference that they can make along the way to their core purpose, they just dive in and fix it.Which is how Rype also comes to employ disabled long-term unemployed staff as a part of its strategy.Great to talk to Greg not only about Rype's story, but its strategy, fundraising, and future trajectory.

See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Serial entrepreneur, Dr Greg Lavery enlightens us on why he sees remanufacturing office furniture as the big opportunity for a more circular building industry. In this episode, Greg shares his personal journey from running a solar company in Australia to founding Rype Office and how they are able to supply beautifully designed, sustainable and low cost furniture. Greg talks about their game changing innovation of creating job opportunities for the long term unemployed, thus creating social, financial and environmental sustainability.Greg shares an interesting insight to his product innovation and highly encourage other remanufacturers to follow suit. As a successful entrepreneur, Greg talks about where he looks for inspiration, and it’s not where you would expect and not from within the sustainability sector. As an unintentional minor comedy moment, also listen out for when the cleaner walks into Greg’s flat during the interview.RypeOffice tweets @RypeOfficeHost: Adam Woodhall of www.inspiring-sustainability.comConnect: www.linkedin.com/in/adamwoodhall See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Time stamped show notes: [01:02] Sean grew up as an immigrant. Born in Korea and came to Canada when was about 7 years old. He understands the loneliness that you feel when you are in place like a foreign country and you can't communicate to anyone. [01:26] Sean: Surrounding yourself with people who speak multiple languages and come from multiple cultures is the key to break down barriers in world today. [06:19] Sean talked about how they started. They early days were just grinding it out in the first year and a half. They started with a blog. Before they came up with the idea, they knew they wanted to be in the language space because of the open market. [08:15] They didn't have capital or an angel investor. It was 100% customer funded. They really had to hustle and push out value, and it eventually paid off for them. [10:28] Sean: Knowledge definitely not a problem. It's simply a lack of discipline, focus, and guidance to fall on a path that is oftentimes going to be a little bit longer than you originally thought. [12:44] Brad: If you have an engine that's fueled by money, the more money you put in here, the more money that comes out over here. [20:53] Seans' journey and failures: Biggest thing that people can relate to, when he started first business they raised capital and last year in university. He dropped out to full time on the business. [23:51] He was also rejected from US Border after first fulling his business, get a job in New York where he was denied a visa and sent home. [24:11] In Toronto, about month and half, he was homeless. Lived in hostel for first week and slept on a friend's couch. [24:27] His original goal in Argentina was just to stay there for three months and go back to Toronto. [25:36] The idea of Rype started when he was working, and he was making decent money in Colombia. He realized that he has been on this trip 8 months and did not know Spanish. [25:41] This is where the idea to help busy people learn effectively in an affordable way came through. [27:45] Eventually they started creating 4 figures a month, then 5 figures a month, and just started growing and growing from there. [28:17] Biggest challenges along the way being a one man team. [32:50] What's next for Sean: The vision and mission is to continue to grow. The high level of mission is help people that are busy, that are impacting world improve. Next move is shifting into a different industry. Initially they want to help people with languages, but eventually they are going to help people learn faster by reading books faster, optimize health, mental mindsets.
