This week, we are thrilled to welcome filmmaker Marta Cunningham to Mothering Heights! Nominated for two News and Documentary Emmy Awards, Marta Cunningham is a queer filmmaker of color. A native of Northern California, she was so moved by the story of Lawrence King's tragic murder in 2008 that she embedded herself in the beachside city of Oxnard, CA, and soon began filming those whose lives were touched by the tragedy. The result was “Valentine Road”, a feature length documentary that competed in the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and sold to HBO for an October 2013 release. “Valentine Road” has traveled to over two hundred festivals, accruing thirteen awards. Marta recently directed and co-executive produced the pilot and second episode of the AMC limited series 61st STREET. She was nominated for an Image Award in 2023 for her directing. She also executive produced and directed all six episodes of CHIVALRY for Channel 4 in the UK, which was created and starred Sarah Solemani and Steve Coogan. Its recently been sold to the US market and will be available on the new platform The Network in 2024. Additional series directing credits include INSECURE, ROOM 104, DEAR WHITE PEOPLE and TRANSPARENT. She is currently working on the  Amazon hit series WHEEL OF TIME.

On vous avait mentionné Ridley Road à l'occasion du festival Series Stories de Marseille, qui met en avant les adaptations de livres en série, et l'adaptation du roman de Jo Bloom arrive sur Canal+ dès le 7 février. Ce drame de la BBC ne se déroule pas pendant la seconde guerre mondiale, mais bien dans les années 60 durant les swinging sixties. À cette période-là, un regain pour le néo-nazisme gagne l'Angleterre notamment dans les milieux ouvriers. Direction Londres, où une jeune femme juive orthodoxe a fugué de son Manchester natal pour retrouver l'homme dont elle est amoureuse. Entre espionnage, résistance et romance, Ridley Road pave le chemin pour un bon divertissement. https://youtu.be/y-Aqb8sS5cg Une plongée authentique dans le Londres de 1962 Une production léchée, des costumes d'époque qui feraient pâlir d'envie le Last Night in Soho d'Edgar Wright, ce Ridley Road de Sarah Solemani (vue dans Bridget Jones 2) peut se tarir de faire partie des high-end dramas britanniques. L'héroïne (une toute nouvelle venue en Agnes O'Casey qui n'a pas dit son dernier mot) est jeune, naïve, mais gagne rapidement en maturité et surtout en courage tout au long de la série. Vivien découvre rapidement que le voyou dont elle est amoureuse appartient au mouvement de la résistance juive, dont la branche est-londonienne est menée par nul autre que son oncle (Eddie Marsan bientôt à l'affiche du film de Ray Donovan). Il a réussi à infiltrer un groupe néo-nazi mené par Colin Jordan (un Rory Kinnear cruel aux antipodes de Penny Dreadful). Cette organisation fasciste qu'est le groupe 62 a vraiment existé, tout comme les manifestations de 1962 à Trafalgar. Ça résume bien Ridley Road, qui floute son histoire fictive avec des contours historiques pour une immersion complète. Un drame rempli d'action L'action est assez prenante et on va suivre Vivien dans la gueule du loup, où elle va commencer à devenir une agente infiltrée. Si par moment tout semble un peu trop simple, cela n'enlève rien au charme de l'histoire, et surtout en suspens. On garde également dans un coin de tête que cette montée du fascisme peut arriver n'importe quand et n'importe où. D'où la facilité de faire un parallèle avec la montée des extrêmes d'aujourd'hui à peu près partout dans le monde. Eh oui, 39-45 a beau être derrière nous, la haine envers les minorités devient de plus en plus flagrante de nos jours et la résonance de la série n'en est que plus forte. Un petit geste peut faire beaucoup. Ridley Road est disponible à partir du 7 février sur Canal+ au rythme de deux épisodes par semaine et en intégralité sur myCanal.

The year is nearly over, but not before the BBC Academy Podcast review of the year! We've had another fantastic year catching up with the likes of award-winning writer Mike Bartlett on his hit TV series Doctor Foster, Sarah Solemani on going from acting in comedies to writing them, and radio presenter Noreen Khan on getting more black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) talent on air. We've also had a great 12 months chatting to unforgettable on-screen talent including Chris Evans, Christian O'Connell and Emma Barnett at the Radio Festival 2015. We've spoken with some rising stars in their field like Destiny Ekaragha and Kascion Franklin. Destiny gave us an amazing insight into what is was like to make her TV directorial debut in Danny and the Human Zoo, the BBC's one-off fictionalised special on Sir Lenny Henry's childhood years.
