Welcome to another episode of Death Don't Do Fiction, the AIPT Movies podcast! The podcast about the enduring legacy of our favorite movies! It's July, so that means it's time for our “Julygantic” series! Where we cover monster movies! In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and returning guest Matt Naughton discuss Peter Weller's journey into what is effectively “Alien but underwater,” 1989's Leviathan! A terrible final one-liner! Aquatic basketball moves! Blue collar despair! Tonal collapses! A guy named Sixpack! Lots of random tubes! Cool clunky dive suits! Angry computer use! Disastrous butter-handling! "Dry for wet" underwater scenes! Hints of secret underwater affairs! Equal opportunity boss punching! Poor quarantine protocols! Someone opening a Pepsi can with their teeth! Questionable management training! Insufficient skiing knowledge! Fun and gross special effects from Stan Winston! A cast that includes Peter Weller, Ernie Hudson, Daniel Stern, Richard Crenna, and Amanda Pays! Crew members that worked on Terminator 2, Alien, Robot Jox, Rambo 2, Cobra, and Blade Runner! All that and more in this "diamond-encrusted trash" that is not only a great sea monster/body horror movie, but possibly one of the best mockbusters ever made! In addition, the gang shares their spoiler-free thoughts on 1991's Cape Fear, the Apple TV shows Cape Fear and Murder bot, as well as Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, Milly Alcock's Supergirl, and Evil Dead Burn! After years of fan speculation, Momoa finally gets to play the Czarnian bounty hunter, bringing the Main Man's attitude, humor, and brutal style to the big screen. The guys discuss whether Lobo steals every scene he's in, how faithful the character is to the comics, and where he could appear next in the DC Universe.Plus, the League talks Superman connections, favorite moments, comic book influences, surprises, Easter eggs, and whether Supergirl lives up to the hype.Find out what the "S" really stands for.

This week The Guys revisited a tradition of going to a movie none of their wives wanted to see.  Permission to watch Supergirl was granted and acted upon.   No Oscar nominations are expected (though the CGI dog is pretty good), but The Guys give it 3 thumbs up.  Milly Alcock and Jason Momoa seem to fit their roles, and David Corenswet seems very Superman-ish in his appearances.  Despite Jay's confusion (why is this movie taking place mostly in space with what seemed like cameo appearances from Star Wars aliens?), the story moves along and makes sense.  Lots of planets, multi-colored suns, but no multi-verses.  In other news, sadly, the leader from an iconic band passes from the planet.   On the other side of the planet, for those who love electric cars AND Batman, Mihandra is ready to take your rupees.  “Heroes” is back on Netflix, so maybe Jay will get past the first few episodes this time around.  Save The Guys!  Save the World!

We had a good time. We just wanted a little more. This week on Zero Dark Nerdy we're sitting down with our full review of Supergirl — the DCU's big summer blockbuster — and honestly it's a mixed bag with perhaps too many cooks in the kitchen? Milly Alcock is fantastic, Jason Momoa as Lobo is undeniable and the cast all around brings real energy to their roles, There's plenty of action-packed fun to keep you in your seat and you can feel the potential of where this DCU era could go...BUT we'd be doing you dirty if we didn't keep it real — the script and plot don't quite match the talent on screen, the pacing gets a little wobbly, and we are still grieving the Blondie-esque trailer soundtrack that never made it into the final film. It also feels like a movie with a few too many cooks in the kitchen, and that shows. Not a bad time at the theater by any means — just one we probably won't be revisiting at home.We dig into all of it, the highs, the frustrations, and what we're hoping the DCU takes away from this one going forward.New episodes every week. Supergirl Review: DC's Adventures in Babysitting Movie Is a Total Mess

SPOILER WARNING The new Supergirl movie had everything we wanted on paper: Milly Alcock as a more broken, bitter Kara Zor-El, a fresh contrast to Superman's optimism, Krypto the Superdog, Jason Momoa as Lobo, and a chance to keep the new DC Universe momentum going after James Gunn's Superman. Unfortunately… we did not love this one. In this spoiler-heavy Supergirl movie review, we break down why the movie felt more like DC's Babysitters Club than a bold new superhero adventure, why Kara's “punk rock” attitude never quite lands, why the Ruthie revenge plot feels weirdly underwritten, and why the movie's feminist ideas feel more like random ingredients thrown into a blender than an actual story. We also get into the Krypto problem, the Jason Momoa/Lobo cameo, the discourse around whether Supergirl is bombing because of misogyny, the bizarre ending, the comparisons to Guardians of the Galaxy, Mad Max: Fury Road, and Superman, and whether this movie hurts our excitement for the future of the DCU. Did Supergirl deserve better? Absolutely. Did this movie deliver? Not for us. Subscribe to Thumb War for more movie reviews, TV recaps, trailer reactions, and chaotic pop culture arguments. Welcome to Multiverse News, your source for information about all your favorite fictional universes.Supergirl, the DCU's second film, hit theaters last weekend and its likelihood to turn a profit is already an uphill battle. The film, which stars Milly Alcock in the title role, and was directed by Craig Gillespie, of I, Tonya fame, raked in a cumulative $68 million at the worldwide box office. With a reported budget of $170–186 million, the film needs to earn upward of $300 million just to break even. Compounding those figures, the movie currently holds a 54% average on Rotten Tomatoes and a B- Cinemascore with audiences.  The 2026 Annecy International Animation Film Festival took place last week and with it came announcements for a bevy of animated films and series.  DC and Warner Bros Animation particularly stood out for a number of upcoming Batman projects. The first is a series adaptation of Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta's best-selling comic series, Absolute Batman, which Warner Bros Animation is partnering with DC Studios to develop. Joker: Laughing Riot was also announced as an adult anime series that explores the Joker in a world where Batman has been killed and will be directed by LOTR: War of the Rohirrim animator Yasuhuro Aoki. If that wasn't enough animated Batmen for you, a trailer for the movie Batman: Knightfall Part One has been released and attendees of the festival were able to see and review the film ahead of its currently undated release later this year. Finally, a kid-friendly series focusing on Krypto was also confirmed to be in the works.Prime Video has renewed animated superhero series Invincible for a sixth season. The trailer debuted for Robert Eggers' anticipated return to period piece horror with Werwulf, starring Aaron Taylor Johnson, Lily Rose Depp, and Willem Dafoe.Dreamworks Animation has announced a Shrek prequel titled Donkey that has a release date of June 30, 2028. Eddie Murphy will reprise his voice role and Charlie Bean who directed the Lego Batman Movie and the live action Lady and the Tramp will direct. Netflix has given a straight-to-series order to a father-daughter espionage thriller starring Stranger Things‘ Millie Bobby Brown and David Harbour from Adolescence co-creator Jack Thorne and A24. It and Annabelle writer Gary Dauberman has been tapped to write the third installment of Five Nights at Freddy's for Blumhouse Atomic Monster and Universal. A trailer for the Timothee Chalamet and Selena Gomez animated alien film we mentioned last week, Not Alone, debuted. The film comes from Illumination.Kane Parson's debut film Backrooms is getting an extended cut that will be available in theaters this Friday featuring 16 minutes of brand-new footage and will be titled Backrooms: Everything Must Go.The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, from Illumination, Nintendo, and Universal, will hit Peacock on July 30, following a 120-day theatrical-to-streaming window.Rockstar opened GTA VI pre-orders June 25, pricing the standard edition at $79.99 and Ultimate at $99.99. Pre orders reportedly topped 39 million units and $3 billion, even as Take Two stock dipped on pricing concerns and no day one online mode. Fans criticized the lack of a disc version and steep price hike from GTA 5. GTA 6 launches November 19.

Supergirl finally hits theaters and Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 lands on Netflix, so Frank and Jonathan break down whether either adaptation lives up to the source material. One earns real praise for protecting what makes its characters great, while the other leaves one of the best endings in modern comics on the cutting room floor. The guys also react to PlayStation deleting 551 movies from UK libraries with no refunds and what that means for digital ownership, plus a stack of DC animation news including an Absolute Batman series, a Joker anime, and a Krypto show from the SpongeBob team. Jonathan checks in on his first read of Dungeon Crawler Carl, and Frank previews weekly X-Men '97 reviews coming to the Geek Freaks YouTube channel. DC is going all in on animation with an Absolute Batman series, a Joker anime called Laugh Riot, a Krypto show from the SpongeBob team, and Tom King's Mister Miracle on the way. Supergirl works as a fun entry in the new DCU, but condensing Tom King's comic stripped out the character depth and swapped one of the best endings in modern comics for a simpler kill. Lobo is a blast on screen with real Beetlejuice energy, but he was not necessary to the plot and deserves his own standalone project, which Jason Momoa says he will only do rated R. Avatar Season 2 succeeds where Supergirl stumbles, condensing the story without cutting anything essential to the characters. Toph and Uncle Iroh stand out, and Ba Sing Se delivers. Final scores: Supergirl gets a 7 from Frank and a 10 from Jonathan, while Avatar Season 2 earns an 8 from Frank and a 9 from Jonathan. Quotes "If you find a way to watch movies, I think you're preserving history. You're not stealing." - Frank "Animation is probably the truest form of adaptation nowadays." - Frank "You're not going to be the hero in every story." - Jonathan "Don't think that the loud voices are the voices, because they're not." - Jonathan "Toph feels like Toph now." - Frank Call to Action Enjoyed the episode?
