First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on July 10th 2022 A few weeks ago, you may remember, PAUL CHANDLER, THE SHY YETI himself from THE SHY LIFE PODCAST who is one of our regular visitors to us all here at VISION ON SOUND was trying to persuade me of the delights of one of his favourite shows, SEX AND THE CITY and, because I'm always open to fresh new ideas about some of the TV shows that I've never personally got around to watching, he thought he might like to try again with a couple of other shows that I'm mostly unfamiliar with, and so the next hour, recorded, incidentally, on a terrible connection for which I can only apologise, we take a short - but hopefully fascinating - diversion into the dark world of DEXTER, the American series with a serial killer in the central role which ran for eight seasons between 2006 and 2013, and which has recently been resurrected for a final bow. And staying amongst the darker shadows of television, we then take a detour INSIDE NUMBER NINE, another show that I'm fairly unfamiliar with, but which, because of being written by STEVE PEMBERTON and REECE SHEARSMITH, shares a lot of DNA with an old favourite of mine from the turn of the century THE LEAGUE OF GENTLEMEN, and which seems to be the inevitable spawn of both that series and its offspring PSYCHOVILLE. There's also a little DOCTOR WHO chat in this context, and we might also briefly touch upon what it actually is that draws us into watching a TV show, or, indeed, choosing not to, and the whole notion of revisiting TV series a few years later on. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

In the second of our extra special bonus episodes in the company of stars from the hit show ‘Spike' – written by Nick Newman and Ian Hislop – Tyler talks to the wonderful Margaret Cabourn-Smith! Margaret can be seen and heard in so much top British TV, radio and podcast comedy over the last twenty years, such as Miranda, Motherland, Psychoville, John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme & Do The Right Thing, and it was a real delight getting to speak to her. She talks about the play and what it's like creating sound effects on stage in front of an audience, as well as her career, being a comedy obsessive and the nuts and bolts of performing. Naturally the conversation focuses on Spike and the Goons but it does wander off onto other topics – as it the nature of this podcast – including a quite unnecessary digression upon the American sitcom The Ropers. ‘Spike' is on at the Watermill Theatre in Newbury until 5th March so catch it if you can! https://www.watermill.org.uk/spike Margaret is also launching a brand new podcast – details on the show. #28 Death is Nice - Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith. With the world in shock about the accusations about an ex-BBC employee with long hair and an odd home life who raised money for charity, Richard is keeping his head down, but he is joined by the slightly odd men behind such hits as The League of Gentlemen and Psychoville, Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton. They chat about the unlikely character of Davey from Henry IV part II, what it's like to work with Woody Allen, as well as a RHLSTP exclusive - the name of the duo's next TV project. Find out where the inspiration for Papa Lazarou and the Psychoville Tina Turner tribute act came from, and the ghostly real-life occurrences that Reece has experienced. If you've ever wondered whether this pair would prefer a ham hand or a sun cream armpit then wonder no more. Have they seen a Big Foot? You'll have to listen to find out. Although if you don't have time to listen then the answer is no. This was a lot of fun to be a part of. I think you will like it. OyOy. How are you lot? We're back with a new episode after a few weeks of accidental hiatus (Sorry about that, we're just mad busy). Anyway, this week, we're joined by a fabulous actor by the name of Mark Bonnar. You might know Mark from Line Of Duty. Or from Guilt, Shetland, Casualty, Psychoville and tons of other amazing stuff. And in this episode of the podcast we do actually discuss a lot of that, but as Craig mentions in the intro it's always from a human angle. Craig and Mark start off talking about children's books and the childhood luxury of being read to, they pass through personas, happy sets, silent comedians, standup comedians and loads, loads more. It's a brilliant chat, and one we're proud to come back with. It's episode 162 of the Two Shot Podcast with the fantastic Mark Bonnar. Get in touch... 'You seem like you've been doing this for years'. Soup Emporium's comment sections are filled with this sentiment. In February of this year he seemed to materialise, fully-formed, on the trending page of YouTube with a steady stream of video essays. His increasingly massive following speculates in the comment section about how someone with so much mastery over the form could simply appear; one who defies categorisation with an eclectic range of topics, whose frenetic wit is grounded by a deep humanity, and whose appetite for research is caught somewhere between doctoral candidate and man 4AM-deep in a Wikipedia rabbit hole. Wherever he came from, he's clearly not going anywhere. Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith really have been doing this for years. The writer-actors behind Inside No. 9, Psychoville, and The League of Gentlemen have been making twisted comedy for over two decades, moving through formats –sketch, serial, anthology– to match their tastes. Flesh-creepingly funny and fiercely independent from the trends of British television, unintentional monoliths of the TV landscape. The video essayist is brand new, but seems as old as the titans of the medium. The old showrunners hold onto a creativity that keeps them young. Soup Emporium and I talk authorship, audience relationships and independence to try and get to the bottom of his love. Lee and Adam conclude their look at great horror comedy TV. On this episode they discuss the legacy of “The League of Gentlemen”, as Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton bring us first “Psychoville” and then the anthology hit “Inside No.9”, and conclude with the sadly little known and pitch perfect spoof that is “Dr Terrible’s House of Horrible” starring Steve Coogan”. Seriously, if you love British Horror films of the 60s and 70s, you owe it to yourself to track this series down! Chris has been captured, and - once his “re-education” has finished - will be back with us next episode where normal WTH service will be resumed. We hope you enjoy, and maybe find some new ghoulish chuckles too. PLEASE NOTE: THIS EPISODE WAS RECORDED BEFORE THE BROADCAST OF THE “INSIDE NO.9” EPISODE “DEATH BE NO PROUD” - NO SPOILERS, BUT THOSE WHO KNOW, WILL UNDERSTAND WHY WE’RE MENTIONING THIS.
In this episode we explore the dark comedy of Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith, revisiting their comic horror mystery series Psychoville, and looking at their current show, the celebrated anthology series Inside No. 9

We discuss a love of horror stories and Reece making mini-sketches of magic shows where he would fire shots with his uncle's air rifle at his toy Hugo the Man of a 1000 Faces. We delve into shyness and how that forms a big part of Reece's 'Blank' moments and how difficult social occasions are if you are incredibly shy. Despite his previous work in the film industry, deep connections with Hollywood, and the Bond films' cast and crew, he still can't help me get a date with Berenice Marlohe. Damnit. I also update you about my own writing and let you know what to expect from the show in the next few weeks.

I also update you about my own writing and let you know what to expect from the show in the next few weeks.
Multiplatform guru Jon Aird, senior producer of the Psychoville website, talks about extending the characters out of this dark comedy and into their own websites. Keri Davies, scriptwriter and web producer, tells us of his experiences of The Archers and the Archers spin-off Ambridge Extra on BBC Radio 4 Extra. Derren Lawford offers his insights gained as exec producer of BBC Three’s Jail Tales. An ambitious mix of multiplatform content about what it's like to be young and in prison, Jail Tales consists of a series of viral YouTube videos, short films, animated shorts and music performances. Derren is currently the commissioning editor for Global iPlayer at BBC Worldwide.
Ken Plume has a chat with writer/performer Reece Shearsmith about League Of Gentlemen, Psychoville, Inside No. 9, Bretton Hall Ghosts, Widowers, and guerrilla awareness.
Broadcast’s latest Talking TV podcast delves into BBC2 comedy Inside Number 9 and considers whether the industry is finally addressing its issue with diversity. Host Jake Kanter is joined by Broadcast editor Lisa Campbell and Faraz Osman, the creative director at multiplatform indie Lemonade Money, who discuss the Creative Diversity Network’s new monitoring scheme and ITV’s plans to launch a pay-TV drama channel. Meanwhile, ITV2’s decision to take Gogglebox Entertainment’s Release the Hounds to a full six-part series is named the Commission of Fortnight. Also on the show, BBC comedy producer Jon Plowman pops by to provide the inside track on Inside Number 9, BBC2’s latest creation from Psychoville and League of Gentlemen writers Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton. Plowman also discusses W1A, the spiritual successor to Twenty Twelve. Finally, find out why Australian comedian Chris Lilley is utterly convincing in BBC3 import Ja'mie: Private School Girl. There’s also a mixed assessment of ITV’s new Wall to Wall Television show Births, Deaths and Marriages.
Happy Hannukkah, we're back and we're front-loaded with content! Introduction - Jake discusses how he killed a mouse and I explain why I'm on the outs with my pregnant sister, which led to a million dollar idea! Mail Call - Gill (we called you Bill, sorry man!) gives us a call to back me in my tipping policy, and Jake quickly ruins everything. Later on, we recount the gifts a listener sent us! Blackstone asks us if we finally watched Dredd 3-D. We also give our opinions on how we feel Untold Tales of the Punisher could have been better. Finally, talk about the Punisher's upcoming role in Iron Man: Rise of the Technomancer, and if it has a chance of spinning off into his own animated feature. NEW CONTEST - Listener and Frank's Salad Days blog writer Arch Stanton is sponsoring a new contest for the show! The instructions are as follows: 1. Make a guess on the total on-screen kill count the Punisher had for all three movies combined. 2. Send in that number to us via email, voice mail, or simply post it under this message in the Punisher: Body Count fan page. 3. At the end of our next show, we'll announce the winner. 4. The one who comes closest will win a Marvel Legends action figure! Jake and Dane's Christmas Gift Advice Segment - Jake and I do your Christmas shopping for you by telling you what Punisher-related gifts are hot this season! Bullet Points - We cover Fury: My War Gone By #7, Rucka's Punisher: War Zone #2, ad Thunderbolts #1. Thunderbolts was better than expected toward Frank, but there's still something missing in it, which I bring up during our review. Flashbacks - By listener request, we cover Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning's Punisher: War Zone #12-16, which is the "Psychoville" story arc. Discharge Papers - I recommend IDW's Rocketeer and the Cargo of Doom and the Walking Dead, and Jake goes into a rant about how much he hates movie theaters these days.
RHLSTP #11: Death is Nice - Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith.
