Movie of the Year: 2006Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull StoryThe Tristram Shandy Podcast Opens the 2006 BracketThe Tristram Shandy podcast episode kicks off our brand new 2006 bracket on Movie of the Year. After crowning our way through 1971, the Taste Buds turn to a fresh film year. Moreover, we start with one of the strangest comedies of the decade. Michael Winterbottom's Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story is a film about making a film of an unfilmable book. Consequently, it makes a perfect launch title for a show that loves movies about movies. In this episode, Ryan, Mike, and Greg dig into metafiction, gender, and the prickly chemistry between Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon. Additionally, two new segments make their debut. Above all, we want to set the tone for a wild 2006 season.About the FilmLaurence Sterne published The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman in nine volumes between 1759 and 1767. The novel is famous for being playful, digressive, and nearly impossible to adapt. Notably, the narrator barely manages to get himself born across hundreds of pages. Winterbottom and his team turned that problem into the whole joke. As a result, the movie follows a fictional crew trying to film the book. Steve Coogan plays a vain version of himself, plus Tristram and his father, Walter. Meanwhile, Rob Brydon plays a needling version of himself and Uncle Toby. The screenplay carries the pseudonym "Martin Hardy," although Frank Cottrell-Boyce actually wrote it. Furthermore, the cast includes Keeley Hawes, Shirley Henderson, Dylan Moran, Naomie Harris, Kelly Macdonald, and Jeremy Northam. Gillian Anderson and Stephen Fry also appear as heightened versions of themselves. You can read more at Wikipedia or the original Roger Ebert review. This is the first film episode of our 2006 season. To explore the wider bracket project, visit the Movie of the Year archive. If you enjoy this Tristram Shandy podcast deep dive, our A Clockwork Orange episode from the 1971 run pairs nicely with this conversation about cinematic form.Want to hear how the season began? Start with our 2006 season intro, then dig into the 2006 bracket reveal before this episode.Metafiction and the Unfilmable NovelMetafiction sits at the center of our first discussion. Sterne wrote a novel that constantly reminds you it is a novel. Similarly, Winterbottom built a movie that keeps reminding you it is a movie. The crew breaks the fourth wall, argues about the script, and screens its own dailies. Therefore, the film becomes a hall of mirrors about storytelling itself. The Taste Buds ask a simple question. How do you adapt a book that mocks the idea of adaptation? Furthermore, we trace the lineage from Sterne to modern self-aware comedies. Films like Adaptation and Day for Night come up as obvious cousins. Ultimately, we argue that Winterbottom found the only honest solution. He filmed the failure instead of the book. Consequently, the movie respects Sterne by refusing to tame him.The Battle of the Sexes on ScreenNext, we turn to gender and how the film portrays men and women. The male characters chase status, sex, and screen time with comic desperation. Coogan, in particular, frets about his shoe lifts and his billing. Meanwhile, the women in the film often hold the real power. Kelly Macdonald plays Jenny, who grounds Coogan with calm clarity. Naomie Harris plays Jennie, a production assistant who runs circles around the panicking men. Gillian Anderson arrives late and instantly reshapes the production. By contrast, the men flail and posture. So the Taste Buds debate a thorny point. Does the movie satirize male ego, or does it quietly indulge it? Additionally, we weigh how the battle of the sexes plays inside an 18th-century story. The novel and the film both poke fun at male pride. As a result, the gender comedy spans two very different centuries.Coogan and Brydon Anchor the Tristram Shandy PodcastAbove all, the Coogan and Brydon double act drives this Tristram Shandy podcast conversation. The two comedians play exaggerated, petty versions of themselves. Their rivalry over billing, teeth, and impressions fuels the funniest scenes. Notably, this dynamic later powered the beloved series The Trip. The Taste Buds dig into why their friction feels so real. Brydon needles, Coogan bristles, and the comedy snaps into focus. Furthermore, we discuss how improvisation shapes their banter. The closing Al Pacino impression duel becomes a highlight. Meanwhile, we ask whether the pair actually like each other on screen. The answer stays gloriously unclear. Consequently, their chemistry gives a chilly intellectual film a warm, human pulse.Rushmore: The Mount Rushmore of 2006 TelevisionOur Rushmore segment asks each host to carve a Mount Rushmore of 2006 television. The year was loaded with future classics. For instance, The Wire aired its acclaimed fourth season. Meanwhile, The Office, 30 Rock, and Friday Night Lights were all finding their feet. Additionally, prestige newcomers like Dexter and Heroes premiered to big buzz. The hosts each pick four shows and defend their choices. Naturally, the debate gets heated fast. Listen to the episode to hear which four faces each Taste Bud sets in stone.I Never Metacritic I Didn't LikeThis episode debuts a brand new game called "I Never Metacritic I Didn't Like." The premise is simple and a little dangerous. We pull up a film's Metacritic profile and put the critical consensus on trial. Specifically, we test whether the aggregate score matches our own gut reactions. Tristram Shandy earned strong reviews from critics on release. However, strong scores do not always survive a Taste Buds cross-examination. Therefore, the game lets us argue with the wider critical record in real time. Expect this segment to return throughout the 2006 season. Above all, it gives us a structured excuse to fight about numbers. Why Tristram Shandy Still MattersTristram Shandy still matters because it cracked a problem that had defeated everyone before it. Winterbottom proved you can film an unfilmable book by filming the attempt. Moreover, the movie launched a now-legendary comic partnership. The Coogan and Brydon collaboration grew into The Trip and its many sequels. Additionally, the film remains a sharp, funny lesson in adaptation. Film students and Sterne scholars both still cite it today. Ultimately, the Tristram Shandy 2006 podcast discussion shows why this small comedy punches far above its weight. Notably, it kicks our 2006 bracket off with brains and mischief.Related Episodes from Movie of the Year: 2006The 2006 season is just getting started, so this list will grow each week. However, after J.J. Abrams screened an early cut for Steven Spielberg, Spielberg specifically asked what happened to the character, leading the crew to edit Babu into the climactic Battle of Exegol as a Y-wing pilot alongside Zori Bliss. We reviewed the big movie of the weekend, the Michael Jackson biopic "Michael," on Tuesday. But there are plenty of other new releases as we await the summer crush. Here's what we discussed in the latest episode of our Breakfast All Day podcast: OVER YOUR DEAD BODY. Samara Weaving and Jason Segel play a miserable married couple who go on a weekend getaway to work on their relationship -- or so they've told each other. Timothy Olyphant and Juliette Lewis co-star in this twisty action comedy from director Jorma Taccone ("Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping"). In theaters. I SWEAR. Robert Aramayo was the surprise best actor winner at the BAFTAs this year for his portrayal of John Davidson, a Scottish man with Tourette syndrome. Writer-director Kirk Jones' film is formulaic in its depiction of adversity, but its heart is in the right place. Maxine Peake, Shirley Henderson and Scott Ellis Watson co-star. In theaters. MOVIE NEWS LIVE! Always a lot to talk about, including "Michael" reactions, early footage of "The Mandalorian & Grogu," casting on Alex Garland's "Elden Ring" movie and more. We won't be here next Friday in solidarity with a nationwide labor strike, but come back on May 8. Thanks for sharing some of your weekend with us! Brian Cox on Directing Glenrothan, Trusting Your Collaborators, and the Magic of the Edit Filmmakers, you are in for an absolute treat today. We are joined by a true titan of the industry, the legendary Brian Cox. After decades of delivering iconic performances on stage and screen, Brian sits down with us to discuss stepping behind the camera for his highly anticipated feature directorial debut, Glenrothan. Fresh off a phenomenal premiere at TIFF (complete with a massive standing ovation!), Brian breaks down his deeply egalitarian approach to filmmaking. He shares the brilliant story of how his producer, Neil Zegler, flat-out told him he was the only person who could direct this movie, and how he leaned heavily on his DP to bring the vision to life. We dive into the nitty-gritty of the craft: why Brian prioritizes script, story, and actors over rigid shot lists and storyboards, the delicate art of directing yourself and "staying out of your own way," and how assembling a powerhouse cast—including Alan Cumming, Shirley Henderson, and brilliant young talent—elevated the entire production. Plus, he shares some invaluable lessons from the cutting room, including why they had to switch editors and dramatically restructure a crucial waterfall scene. Topic of the Week: Make sure you stick around for the outro, where we break down Brian's philosophy in our Topic of the Week: The Egalitarian Set: Why the Best Directors Don't Micro-Manage. We discuss why letting go of control and trusting your Heads of Department is actually an indie director's greatest superpower. IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS: The Push to Direct: How producer Neil convinced Brian he had to take the helm of Glenrothan. The TIFF Premiere: The emotional experience of screening the film and receiving a standing ovation. The Egalitarian Set: Why Brian threw out rigid storyboards to focus entirely on the script, the story, and the actors. Directing Yourself: The secret to acting in your own movie and learning how to "stay out of your own way." Casting Magic: Working with heavy hitters like Alan Cumming and Shirley Henderson alongside rising young stars. The Realities of the Edit: Navigating post-production hurdles, switching editors, and the brilliant decision to move a crucial waterfall scene to later in the film. Brian's Ultimate Advice: Why a director's greatest superpower is trusting their department heads and valuing everyone's creative contribution. Magic Island Storytelling Theatre: Strange Tales From The Isle Of Arran: Ghost & fairy tales & more.

Sorry it's been a muckle long time since I last posted an episode, but I've had a lot on in both work and life this year. My audio drama for Audible, THE DEAD OF RANNOCH MOOR -- exactly the sort of folk horror tale I perform a lot on the M.I.S.T podcast but done on a far grander scale, with real actors performing it (Chris Reilly & Shirley Henderson) and a wrap-around immersive soundtrack by Joe Richardson and music by my fellow Arranach Electra Perivolaris --was released on the Audible app in October; plus my stage show The Passion Of Tam Shanter was premiered in August, and several other things have been in the works which it's still too early to speak of.But the impulse came to me to put aside momentarily all the grand complications of Big Time Showbiz and record another no-frills, unplugged, improvised performance of a traditional folk tale in the traditional manner. So here we go, with my very Scottish version of what started life as a creepy Bohemian folk tale....

‘Goblin Market' was the title poem of Christina Rossetti's first collection, published in 1862, and while she disclaimed any allegorical purpose in it, modern readers have found it hard to resist political interpretations. The poem's most obvious preoccupation seems to be the Victorian notion of the ‘fallen woman'. When she wrote it Rossetti was working at the St Mary Magdalene house of charity in Highgate, a refuge for sex workers and women who had had non-marital sex. Anxieties around ‘fallen women' were explored by many writers of the day, but Rossetti's treatment is striking both for the rich intensity of its physical descriptions and the unusual vision of redemption it offers, in which the standard Christian imperatives are rethought in sisterly terms. Seamus and Mark discuss how post-Freudian readers might read those descriptions and what the poem says about the place of the ‘market' in Victorian society.Read the poem here: https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/44996/goblin-marketThis episode features a full reading of 'Goblin Market' by Shirley Henderson and Felicity Jones at the Josephine Hart Poetry Hour. Writer and resident Gilbert & Sullivan expert Julia Sirmons joins to discuss Mike Leigh's 'Topsy-Turvy', a story of the aforementioned musical duo and the production of one of their most popular shows, 'The Mikado'. It's a film that feels at once like an outliler in Leigh's career up to that point (his first film not set in contemporary working-class London) and a pitch-perfect culmination of many of his career-long explorations. We begin with a discussion about the legacy of director Mike Leigh, his unusual method for drawing brilliant performances from his ensemble of some of the very best British actors, and his trademark style and narrative construction. Then, we unpack the works of Gilbert & Sullivan, exploring Topsy-Turvy's commitment to authenticity in its recreation of 19th century English theater culture, and the wise decision to focus the film on a particularly unstable moment in the long collaboration between the wordsmith and composer. Finally, we discuss the film's evocation of art and its production process, emphasizing the granular repetition of the work as well as the undergirding capitalist mechanics that necessitated performers assume a strong identity as a collective labor force. Andor – Ending Diego Luna, star of the Disney+ series “Andor,” has said that leading a rebellion against the Galactic Empire can take a toll and that he's ready to close Cassian Andor's chapter ahead of the second and final season of the show. Luna said that it was important for his mental health that the show only ran for two seasons, but he still wants to enjoy the experience. Luna first played Andor in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and decided to return to the prequel series because he felt there was more to the story. The final season is yet to receive a release date. The Devil in the White City – Canceled Hulu has canceled the adaptation of Erik Larson's bestselling novel “The Devil in the White City,” which had Keanu Reeves attached to star. The series was going to tell the story of the visionary architect Daniel H. Burnham and Dr. H. H. Holmes, America's first modern serial killer, during the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. The project, which had been developing since 2010, was initially planned as a feature film before shifting gears and becoming a limited series for Hulu. While plans to shop the project to other outlets exist, it's unclear whether the adaptation will move forward. Barry – Ending HBO has confirmed that the fourth season of Bill Hader's dark comedy “Barry” will be its last. The show follows the story of Barry, a hitman who wants to become an actor, but his past life and the violent world he's trying to leave behind keeps pulling him back in. The final season will consist of eight episodes and is set to premiere in April. Dune: The Sisterhood – Canceled Dune: The Sisterhood, the HBO Max spinoff prequel series to Denis Villeneuve's 2021 film Dune, is on production hiatus as the show has lost both its director, Johan Renck, and Shirley Henderson, an actor in a prominent role. Villeneuve had originally designed the series as a prequel to his film and announced it in 2019, but departed the project in 2022 to focus on shooting the second half of his Dune movie project. Warner Bros. is reportedly going through a significant wave of cost-cutting and reorganizing, leading to HBO Max canceling or dropping expensive series.

It's 2023! Good god. And Kelsey and Jenn are back with a meta murder mystery that is maybe too smart for it's own good. 2022's See How They Run is up for discussion, starring Saoirse Ronan, Sam Rockwell, Adrian Brody, Ruth Wilson, and everyone's favorite British actress, Shirley Henderson. And it's...okay? It's definitely not as good as Glass Onion, which is not a period drama but is certainly something that you should not watch right before watching See How They Run. Which is what both Jenn and Kelsey did and now have been spoiled with something fantastic right before something mediocre. Bah.

Laurence Sterne's The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentlemen has been called "the first post-modern novel" written before "there was even a modern to be post- about." Written in 1759, the nine-volume satirical memoir is also recognized as "thoroughly unadaptable." But in 2005, Michael Winterbottom and Steve Coogan attempted to do just that. Caleb and Frank are joined by special guest Will Drickey to discuss dads, meta-fiction, and Shirley Henderson.
