This week, we chat about Osmosis' unique approach to bridge selection. Unlike other projects which have used many bridges, Osmosis underwent a "canonical bridge selection" process to choose one provider, with the intention of providing a superior UX for end users. All of this was done through on-chain governance. Axelar emerged victorious, and is working on an integration with Osmosis. In this podcast, we talk about the unique governance process used, the various bridge providers involved, and Axelar's unique approach. Sergey Gorbunov of Axelar discusses blockchain interoperability, a technology that enables decentralized applications to work across multiple blockchain ecosystems. Host Philip Winston spoke with Gorbunov about programmable blockchains, distributed vs. centralized changes, the Ethereum virtual machine, Axelar's Cross-Chain Gateway Protocol and Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol, security issues, delegated proof of stake...
Today on Fortune Teller Podcast we are talking with Sergey Gorbunov, Co-Founder of Axelar Network. The Axelar Network brings Decentralized Interoperability to Ethereum, Cosmos Avalanche, Terra, Moonbeam and others, by unlocking cross-chain communications. Blockchain platform builders can plug-in their blockchain ecosystem to all other blockchain ecosystems. Dapp builders can host their dapps anywhere, as well as lock, unlock, and transfer assets, and speak with dapps on other chains via Axelar API. Users are able to interact with all applications across each blockchain's ecosystem right from their wallet. Axelar is empowered by a decentralized and open network of validators. Any user can join, use it, and partake in the Axelar protocol. Byzantine consensus, cryptography, and incentives are used to ensure high-safety and liveness needs for cross-chain requests. The network is a universal platform to connects all blockchains via a decentralized network and an SDK of protocols and APIs. With the network and SDK, developers can effectively make new connections and implement their dapps with all blockchain ecosystems. This creates greater access to users, assets, liquidity, and many other applications. Axelar differs from similar projects in that current projects work on interoperability within their own ecosystems. They generally lack methods to connect external blockchains based off of different consensus rules and software stacks. The need to provide interoperability in the wider crypto ecosystem has been met with unproven centralized point-to-point bridging options created in the market. Axelar gives a complete solution to cross-chain interactions that is made to be interoperable with any chain. This allows for plug-and-play connectivity with little work to integrate new chains, and is made to be decentralized. Axelar features cross-chain routing and application-level transfer protocols. This lets builders access all interconnected chains via the Axelar network. This results in allowing developers to build on the best platforms that suit their needs and use global liquidity and composability. Due to being decentralized, it is open for anyone to participate in. Being universal in connecting, it is possible to scale across arbitrary Layer 1, Layer 2, Proof of Work (PoW) or Proof of Stake (PoS) chains. Retail users will be able to take advantage of cross-chain asset transfer workflows directly within the apps that they already use. The Axelar Network has already been audited by NCC, Cure53, and Oak Security. Axelar continues to perform audits of other components and functionalities, stress-testing, and pen-testing of its network throughout development. In January 2022, the Public Mainnet roll out begins, after initial interrogations with Bitcoin, Ethereum, and the support of arbitrary EVM chains have happened. Sergey Gorbunov is the co-founder of Axelar Network. With the rise of alternate L1s, the crypto landscape and DeFi assets are more fragmented. Axelar's stack provides a decentralized network, protocols, tools, and APIs that allow for simple cross-chain communication. Sergey received his PhD from MIT in Computer Science. Way back in 2013, he was a crypto researcher for IBM before going on to join the founding team at Algorand. In addition to co-founding Axelar, he is an assistant professor at the University of Waterloo. We dive into why interoperability is a buzzword, how the current bridging ecosystem could be a black swan for crypto, the shortcomings of interoperable blockchains that only do a few things and how Axelar could be the "Border Gateway Protocol" moment for Crypto. Cross Chain Functionality with Sergey Gorbunov of Axelar In the beginning, there was Bitcoin. One chain to rule them all. Until more chains started popping up. Ethereum, Binance Smart chain, Solana, Cardano, just to name a few. We see a future where cross-chain interoperability is a regular thing. And we're not alone. Sergey Gorbunov was on the founding team at Algorand, and today is the co-founder of Axelar, a decentralized network and tools that connect users, assets, and dApp across multiple blockchain ecosystems. Today we're talking with Sergey Gorbunov, the co-founder and CEO of Axelar Network. With a background in the tech space Sergey went on to grad school where he studied formal cryptography. By the end of his studies it was 2014, and he got hooked into the blockchain space. He started to collaborate with one of the faculty members at MIT on how to make blockchains more scalable. He says everyone has networks that have been built out, people are building up the community, but in reality the communication between the networks is what's important. Axelar Network is a set of infrastructure, protocols, and API's that allow the connection of various blockchain ecosystems, applications, and users. At the end of the day the goal is to empower two types of participants. First, for application builders they want to be able to build on the best platforms. For users, they want to empower them to interact with any application and asset that they own no matter what platform it resides on. Say you have an asset on one existing blockchain network. By itself those assets live within those networks only. Suppose there is an application that is built on another platform, as a user there's a lot of friction you have to go through to use your asset in those applications. One of their first use case targets is to build a decentralized application that will allow the user to move their asset to one of the chains that they want to use an application at. Sergey says they have integrations with bitcoin, Ethereum, and other platforms. Users will be able to move assets from different ecosystems. The company has been working on the project for a little over a year. They did a seed fund in early fall and just last week announced their series A fundraiser. There is currently a team of 15 people working on protocol. Sergey says they're in a test environment, going through various exercises, learning how to send requests back and forth, giving feedback, and thinking about various tools needed for the network. The goal over the next month is to get through the test network, make sure it's bulletproof, and sign up more ecosystem participants. They'll also be scaling the team around engineering, business operations, and community development. Then they'll launch their platform from there. Divi's user-friendly, one-click solutions aim to bring blockchain-based payments into modernity with great UX. In this podcast, we will cover all aspects of cryptocurrency, hot topics, and technology as worldwide adoption grows.
On the show today, we have Sergey Gorbunov, co-founder of Axelar. Axelar network is a decentralized state machine responsible for facilitating cross-chain requests. Axelar's gateway protocol is a delivery and routing protocol that can work with any arbitrary blockchain regardless of consensus. This means any decentralised network can plug-in to Axelar seamlessly to access liquidity amongst other things from all other decentralised networks. Axelar also gives developers the freedom to connect their dApp into external networks that might have been previously inaccessible to them without redesigning the smart contracts. The show with Sergey covers his previous experience, how Axelar is different from Cosmos and Polkadot, what validators do for the network, their solution for scaling threshold cryptography and their vision for an interoperability network that is consensus and state transition agnostic.
