Key figures like Brian Brooks and Howard Lutnick—linked to major stablecoins and now in influential government roles—highlight what Aaron describes as a Silicon Valley and “PayPal mafia” takeover of policy. The proposed Genius Act and Stable Act would require stablecoins to be fully backed by U.S. Treasuries, effectively forcing users to fund government debt and surveillance systems. With projections of $120 trillion in stablecoin transactions by 2030, Aaron calls this “turbo cancer for CBDC adoption.” The sheer scale of these numbers underscores the urgency he sees in resisting the push toward centralized digital money. The conversation then shifts to solutions within the privacy coin space, emphasizing unity against technocratic control. Aaron highlights FUSD (Freedom Dollar), a private algorithmic stablecoin built on Zano, which offers an alternative by being over-collateralized with Zano rather than tied to government-backed assets. He discusses Zano's technical advantages, including its deflationary model, while defending its pre-mine as a necessary step for development funding. Both hosts stress the importance of collaboration across privacy projects like Monero, Tari, and Zano to resist systemic control. They also preview Porkfest, where they'll host a privacy tent and welcome Ross Ulbricht and his mother Lynn, who is launching a new advocacy initiative. In this episode of the Pirate Pod, Keli Callaghan interviews Sergey Gorbunov, CEO of Interop Labs and co-founder of Axelar Protocol, discussing the evolution of blockchain interoperability, the needs of retail (seamless access) and institutions(increasing demand for interoperability), and the role of stablecoins - especially when it comes to the the impact of the regulatory landscape. Sergey explains how Axelar's technology simplifies cross-chain communication and enhances user experiences, while also addressing decentralization and security. Axelar's Interchain Token Service is providing significant value when it comes to multi-chain asset issuance (think improved wallet experiences) and the Axelar virtual machine is bringing new functionality and creating a framework of smart contracts. This episode is a deeper dive on how fragmented experiences that are poised to get worse as the technology stack scales horizontally can be improved with Axelar. The session, which comes on the heels of headlines from the Axelar community including the appointment of Brian Brooks to the foundation board and an ETF for Axelar, highlights upcoming milestones for Axelar and the future of cross-chain applications. For more information on Axelar: https://www.axelar.network/

Our conversation for Tourism Tuesday welcomes Joy Dovel, the gift shop manager and coordinator for the weekly farmer's market in the courtyard at Winchester Medical Center.  The farmer's market is a relatively new initiative at Winchester Medical Center, running every Wednesday from May through October, from 11 AM to 3 PM. Joy explains that the idea was conceived by Dan Cornish from the nutritional services department. He wanted to bring local farmers and vendors together to provide hospital employees and visitors with access to fresh, locally-grown produce and handmade items. The market serves as a convenient shopping venue for employees and supports local farmers and vendors. Initially envisioned as a traditional farmer's market, the market has expanded to include a diverse array of vendors. Apart from fresh produce, the market features flowers, woodworking items, essential oils, and more. Joy recounts how vendors with varied offerings reached out, resulting in a vibrant and eclectic marketplace. Although not all vendors can attend every week, there are usually at least five or six present. We discuss the beautiful setting of the Winchester Medical Center courtyard, noting the picturesque grounds with trees, flowers, geese, ducks, and squirrels. Joy highlights the hospital's well-maintained and almost park-like surroundings, making the market a pleasant experience for both staff and visitors. Joy provides an overview of some of the market vendors including Amber Kerns of Fur and Bers with baked goods, Mary (Libby) Powell from Sibling Coffee Roasters, Brian Brooks is the BatDad woodworker, Jeffrey Robinette the beekeeper, Carol Webb with flowers and lamb, Sierra Rudolph with goat milk products, Mark Bishop from Master's Touch with fresh produce, and several others. Each vendor brings unique products to the market, adding to its diverse appeal. The conversation touches on the broader community impact, highlighting Valley Health's commitment to supporting its employees and local vendors. Joy explains that donations from the market benefit Winchester Medical Center Auxiliary, supporting numerous projects such as the Cancer Center and shuttle services.  Joy invites interested vendors to contact her via email.  In the second segment, we wander the market and talk with a few vendors. First, Mark Bishop of Masters Touch Plants and Produce shares his experience and the variety of items he brings each week. Mark has been part of the market since its inception and values the opportunity to support hospital staff while promoting his locally-grown produce and plants. Next, we talk to Megan from Magpie Apothecary, who explains her mission to offer natural remedies and bath products, using locally sourced ingredients. Megan shares her personal journey from dealing with health issues to finding a passion in creating apothecary products during the COVID-19 pandemic. She emphasizes the importance of natural alternatives to pharmaceuticals and outlines her involvement in various local markets. Finally, we talk with Maria Rosales and Rosa Marquez from Rosa Maria Bakery. They discuss their friendship, love for baking, and decision to start a bakery business together. The duo shares their unique dessert menu featuring both Hispanic and original recipes. Despite balancing school and work, they manage to fulfill special orders and participate in the farmer's market, receiving positive feedback from customers.

One of the most profoundly successful Federal funding programs in our history is The Pittman-Robertson Act of 1937. For 85 years, this legislation has funded wildlife conservation efforts to the tune of over eleven billion dollars. It has fueled projects such as habitat restoration, wildlife science projects, public access, species rehabilitation, hunter education, gun ranges, and much more. It has also been a strong badge of honor to sportsmen and women, a weighted fist in the fight against the anti-hunting movement, and an effective tool to improve the overall management of our wildlife and the wild places they thrive in.  Now, in a surprising twist, it is under attack by Republican legislatures under a false premise that it is an infringement to gun owners. As a right of center hunter, I'm embarrassed by this legislation. As a 2A advocate, I'm ashamed of the misuse of what I consider our most critical Constitutional Amendment. And as an American, I'm confused as to why our elected officials would meddle in such a wonderful conservation tool given the current issues Americans face that should be prioritized.  In this episode, Brian Brooks, Executive Director of the Idaho Wildlife Federation, joins me to break down the details of this proposed legislation, explain why it's misplaced, and offer some action items us sportsmen and women can do to combat it. The time is now, we cannot allow the people we have trusted in government office, deprive us and our wildlife of the most responsible use of tax dollars any collective group has ever contributed. At its re:Invent conference, Amazon Web Services announced two new initiatives to make machine learning more accessible to anyone interested in learning and experimenting with the technology. The first is a $10 million scholarship programme to make AI and ML education accessible to poor students around the world. It will benefit 2000 students every year. Top 500 students, after a first Udacity nano degree, will get a shot at a second one and mentorship from experts at Amazon and Intel. The second initiative is about increasing access to machine learning through Amazon SageMaker Studio Lab, which gives everyone access to a no-cost version of Amazon SageMaker—an AWS service that helps customers build, train, and deploy machine learning models. “The two initiatives we are announcing today are designed to open up educational opportunities in machine learning to make it more widely accessible to anyone interested in the technology,” said Swami Sivasubramanian, Vice President of Amazon Machine Learning at AWS. US lawmakers have called executives of eight major cryptocurrency firms to testify before a congressional committee on December 8, BBC reports, as the government scrutinises the sector further. Coinbase's Alesia Haas, Circle's Jeremy Allaire and Bitfury's Brian Brooks are among the executives asked to testify, according to BBC. This will be the first time companies representing the controversial sector have been questioned in this way. Square, a fintech company co-founded by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, is changing its name to Block, the company said Wednesday. Dorsey quit Twitter earlier this week, where he was part-time CEO, while also being CEO of Square. “The change to Block acknowledges the company's growth,” the company said in a press release. “Since its start in 2009, the company has added Cash App, TIDAL, and TBD54566975 as businesses, and the name change creates room for further growth. Block is an overarching ecosystem of many businesses united by their purpose of economic empowerment, and serves many people—individuals, artists, fans, developers, and sellers.” Microsoft has released a cheaper, standalone version of its Teams collaboration software, Teams Essentials, aimed at smaller businesses. “We know how difficult the past 20 months have been for small businesses. They've had to demonstrate extreme flexibility to adapt, often with limited access to tools and technology,” Jared Spataro, corporate vice president for Microsoft 365, said in a blogpost. “Teams Essentials is built specifically to meet the unique needs of small businesses, enabling them to thrive in this new era of work. ”Teams Essentials includes group meetings for up to 30 hours, meetings with up to 300 people, and 10GB of cloud storage per user. A subscription will cost $4 in the US, and Rs. 100 in India, per person per month. CRED, a fintech company founded by entrepreneur Kunal Shah, is buying Happay, which provides corporate expense management in India. The acquisition is expected to be a cash and stock deal potentially valuing Happay at approximately $180 million, the company said in a press release. While Happay will operate as a separate entity, the team will work closely with CRED to tap its ecosystem, build distribution, add products and expand the business. Happay's 230-member team will get all the benefits extended to CRED team members, including its ESOP programme, the company said in the release.

We begin the episode discussing Paul's early career as a trial lawyer where he had to find ways to explain complex concepts, often involving technology, to ordinary jurors.  Paul describes how he learned to do this, particularly with argument by analogies that were accessible to jurors. We then move to discuss Paul's years as a Judge in the Northern District of California, where he presided over many civil jury trials.  As a judge, Paul was in a good position to observe and comment on the quality of the lawyering.  He saw what worked and what did not work in front of juries.  He also developed views about how to improve civil jury trials to produce fairer and better results.Following Paul's time on the bench, we became of the senior attorneys at Facebook, responsible for managing Facebook's litigation across the globe.  Paul shares what he learned about digital media from that experience and provides his take on the current debate between first amendment open media and the role of social media platforms, like Facebook, in the dissemination of propaganda, conspiracy theory and false and misleading information. Finally, we move on to discuss Paul's current position as general counsel at Coinbase, an online cryptocurrency trading platform. Woohoo! This is my 20th edition! I started writing on a whim without a plan. I knew I wanted to learn more about crypto and share with others interested and so I just started. Thanks for coming along on this ride. Be sure to invite others who might get a kick out of this too. There is room at the table. Quick rant: I intentionally do not spend a lot of time talking about the price of bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies. Developments in this ecosystem are going to transform our lives, the products we buy and build. Sometimes, I feel like the price is a distraction. #DollarCostAverage #BuyTheDip #StackSats #HODL NewsLuxury goods get on blockchainOver $600B of fake goods are sold each year. How would you feel if you unknowingly bought a fake $5,000 Rolex watch or $50,000 Birkin bag? LVMH (ex Louis Vuitton), Prada, and Richemont (ex Cartier) formed the Aura Blockchain Consortium to provide customers with proof of authenticity and ability to track ownership and post-sale repairs. This is huge for the pre-owned market for luxury goods. Maybe one day you could whip out a phone and scan watches, bags, jewelry to find if its real. Binance US names Brian Brooks as CEOBinance US is the American arm of the world’s biggest crypto exchange. The company has a big vision with projects in payments and stocks. For example, the US stock market is closed more hours than it is open, Binance has tokenized Tesla stock so that you can buy and sell it 24/7/365However, Binance US needs a steady hand to navigate complex regulatory environment. Brian is the crypto-loving former head of a bank regulator. Sounds like a win-win!Venmo goes cryptoDo you remember writing checks or using cash to pay your nanny? Person-to-person payment solutions like Venmo and CashApp have changed the game. Venmo is owned by PayPal. Last year, PayPal announced it’s grand vision for digital assets like bitcoin and stablecoins. Now Venmo enables users to buy, hold, and sell a few cryptocurrencies. They have over 52 million users in the US. This is a big advantage over crypto exchanges like OKCoin who have to work hard to acquire new users Crypto mining to subsidize renewable energyElectricity from wind and solar is now cheaper than natural gas. However, it is not consistent. The wind is variable and sun only shines during the day.Building bitcoin mines at wind and solar facilities would enable them to gobble up any surplus electricity. It could subsidize these investments. Square and Ark Investment partnered on a research project exploring this topic. If implemented, it would be a win for the climate and the bitcoin network. It would end the narrative that crypto is bad for the environment. NYDIG acquires bitcoin mine financierThe supply of bitcoin mining machines has not kept up with the surging demand. The price of machines has more than doubled in the past year. Time is of the essence if operators want to capture record high bitcoin mining revenue. Arctos Capital provides financing for bitcoin mine investments and leasing of mining equipment. This week, NYDIG acquired Arctos Capital. NYDIG provides a range of services including custody for institutional investors like Mass Mutual. ExploreDid you know you could passively earn bitcoin by shopping? This week my Fold card arrived! Fold is a bitcoin rewards debit card. I’ve been using the app to buy Amazon gift cards which I use for my regular shopping. Now, I have the card so it’s easier than ever. I’m excited to #StackSomeSats (FYI: sats are the subunit for bitcoin like cents is to dollar except 1 bitcoin = 100 million sats) Check it out: Fold Did you know there are also crypto credit cards too? I used credit card points to pay for my honeymoon at a 5-star luxury island resort. It was amazing. But wouldn’t it be cool to get rewards for an appreciating asset? Enter crypto credit cards. Blurred lines, Brooks leaves and Goldman crypto

5x5 Crypto News

Each week, I cover the “So what?” from 5 key crypto news stories in about 5 minutes. Let’s go!Anchorage becomes first national digital asset bank. The crypto start-up was conditionally approved for a national bank charter by the OCC. This announcement further blurs the lines between traditional finance and cryptosphere. Anchorage provides a range of financial services to institutional investors in digital assets. This includes services and infrastructure that allows them to trade, custody, lend, borrow, and participate in other blockchain activities. So what? This is a watershed moment for digital assets. Anchorage now has the technical sophistication and the regulatory clarity to offer and develop innovative solutions for institutions. This means that very large institutions, neobanks, large bulge bracket banks, and maybe smaller companies now have a partner with regulatory charter and guidance on digital asset custody, stablecoin issuance, and other businesses within crypto.Brian Brooks steps down from the OCC. The crypto friendly acting head of the OCC has stepped down to make room for President-elect Biden to nominate a candidate. Brooks’ tenure was relatively short but transformational. Under his leadership, the OCC issued a slew of guidelines and clarifications that have propelled cryptosphere forward culminating in Anchorage securing the first national bank charter as a crypto company. So what? There have been calls from some Congressional Democrats for the next head of the OCC to reverse the recent crypto-related guidance. It remains to be seen what posture the Biden administration will take towards digital currencies. Regulatory clarity, consistency and support are key to driving innovation and growth in this sector. The industry is keenly watching to see who will succeed Brooks. Nominations are for a 5-year-term. Goldman Sachs to custody crypto: Goldman Sachs reportedly issued a Request For Information (RFI) in late 2020 for digital currency custodial services. The RFI is the first step in evaluating technology solutions to enable its customers to buy, sell, and hold cryptocurrencies and stablecoins. JP Morgan and Citibank also reportedly issued RFIs in 2020 too. So what? In 2020, the OCC clarified that banks can hold digital currencies. Neobanks like Revolut and SoFi already enable their customers to buy, sell, and hold bitcoin, ether, and litecoin. PayPal drove adoption when it enabled users to buy and sell cryptocurrencies in October. It’s only a matter of time before a traditional bank does so too. Others will follow assuming the regulatory environment continues to be supportive. Gemini eyes IPO, launches rewards card: The Winklevoss twins’ Gemini crypto exchange are reportedly considering an IPO hot on the hells of Coinbase. They will also explore alternate options to take the company public such as a SPAC. Gemini also recently announced that it is launching a 3% bitcoin rewards credit card. BlockFi was the first to announce a bitcoin rewards credit card. So what? 2021 could shape up to be the year crypto went public. Gemini would be another multi-billion dollar IPO adding further credibility to the industry. Coinbase and Gemini were founded in 2012 and 2014 respectively. Lost Bitcoin worth millions: This week 2 stories emerged of early bitcoin investors each unable to access $200-300M worth of bitcoin. The first was a Welsh engineer who mistakenly threw away a hard drive with 7,500 bitcoin purchased in 2013. He has offered the local council 25% of the windfall if he is allowed to search the landfill. The second story was a tech executive who stored some of his bitcoin on an ultra-secure drive that only permits 10 incorrect password guesses before it blocks access forever. He is unable to recall the password and only has 2 guesses left. So what? These nightmare stories horrify a number of bitcoin holders and would-be investors. Bitcoin keys are like a physical asset. If you lose them, it’s over. The New York Times estimates that 20% of all wallets holding bitcoin are held by people unable to access them. This reduces the supply of the currency and supports higher prices as demand rises. Secure and accessible custody is a key concern. A number of start-ups have emerged to provide secure third-party back-up access and crypto wills to provide heirs access in the event of an untimely death. This is a public episode. Rapid growth in digital dollar stablecoins has led to increased interest from traditional fintechs, banks and financial institutions in supporting digital currency.  In recent weeks, Acting Head of the OCC at the US Treasury Department, Brian Brooks, issued guidance to national banks that they can custody crypto assets on behalf of customers, leading banks around the country to explore how they can leverage the benefits of this breakthrough technology. All of this is part of a broader and rapid shift in the dialogue around digital dollars, the role of cryptocurrency and public blockchain networks, and how this technology transformation can be leveraged in the US and global financial system. This coming week on the Money Movement we are honoured to host Comptroller Brooks, the leading regulator of banks in the United States, for a discussion on digital dollar stablecoins and their role in the US financial system. Coinbase is one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the United States. Just last week, Mr. Brooks left Coinbase to become the second in command at the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). This is significant because of the situation the U.S. is currently in with regards to the economy, and a larger currency crisis. The USD is facing mounting inflationary pressure with the Fed printing more than $7T for aid packages in just one week. Last fall, Mr. Brooks wrote about how he feels a digital dollar is inevitable and it is only a matter of time before central banks begin to issue them. We think the current economic and monetary situation now logically call for the issuance of a central bank digital currency by the U.S……if not, the reserve of Bitcoin in an effort to compete with the rest of the world. The second most important topic we discuss today is the importance of online privacy. Right now in the background of the COVID-19 chaos, congress is attempting to pass the EARN IT act which will strip all encryption of online messages. I sometimes here people say something along the lines of “If i'm not doing anything wrong I don't care who sees”. As people, we need to start taking online privacy more serious. You wouldn't expose yourself naked to the world would you? The internet is going to be the last bit of freedom people have in the world and we need to do everything we can to keep it private and secure.
