The Zinoviev Affair is a story of one of the most long-lasting and enduring conspiracy theories in modern British politics, an intrigue that still resonates nearly one-hundred years after it was written. Almost certainly a forgery, the so-called Zinoviev Letter, had no original and has never been traced. Notwithstanding, the Letter still haunts British politics. It was the subject of major Whitehall investigations in the 1960s and 1990s, and it even cropped up in the British media as recently as during the Referendum campaign of 2016 and the 2017 general election. The Letter, addressed to the leadership of the British Communist Party, encouraging the British proletariat to greater revolutionary fervor, was apparently sent by Grigori Zinoviev, head of the Communist International in September 1924. Sent to London through British Secret Intelligence Service channels, the Letter's publication by the Daily Mail on October 25th 1924 just before the General Election humiliated the first ever British Labour government, headed by Ramsay MacDonald, when its political opponents used it to create a “Red Scare” in the media. Labour blamed (erroneously) the Letter for its defeat, insisting there had been an establishment conspiracy, and many in the Labour Party have never forgotten it. The Zinoviev Letter has long been a symbol of political dirty tricks and what we would now call “fake news”. Now, former Chief Historian at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Dr. Gill Bennett, who headed up an official inquiry into the Zinoviev Affair in the late 1990s, takes another look at this matter in a fascinating book, The Zinoviev Letter: The Conspiracy that Never Dies (Oxford University Press, 2018). Employing research skills honed by forty-years work at the Foreign Office, Dr. Bennett entrances the reader with this still fascinating detective story of spies and secrets, fraud and forgery, international subversion and the nascent global conflict between communism and capitalism. In this provocative challenge to United States policy and strategy, former Professor of Strategy & Policy at the US Naval War College, and author or editor of eleven books, Dr. Donald Stoker argues that America endures endless wars because its leaders no longer know how to think about war in strategic terms and he reveals how ideas on limited war and war in general have evolved against the backdrop of American conflicts in Korea, Vietnam, and Iraq. These ideas, he shows, were and are flawed and have undermined America's ability to understand, wage, and win its wars, and to secure peace afterwards. America's leaders he argues have too often taken the nation to war without understanding what they want or valuing victory, leading to the “forever wars” of today in Afghanistan and Iraq. Why America Loses Wars: Limited War and US Strategy from the Korean War to the Present(Cambridge University Press, 2019) dismantles seventy years of misguided thinking and lays the foundations for a new approach to the wars of tomorrow. Why American Loses War is a must read for policy practitioners, serving soldiers and the lay educated public. Charles Coutinho has a doctorate in history from New York University. James 5:11 refers to the “patience of Job” (KJV). If we take a detour through the book of Job and notice how the Greek vocabulary of perseverance (the KJV's “patience”) is used in James' letter, we gain insight into human suffering as something properly to lament. In James 5:4, James writes according to the NIV, “The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty.” This language echoes Ps. 18:6 (LXX Ps. 17:7) and Isa. 5:9. One verb, borrowed from the Greek version of Ps. 18, is changed from a future to a perfect tense form. There are historic shifts behind that small change. Hans Van Eyghen's book The Epistemology of Spirit Beliefs (Routledge, 2023) assesses whether belief in spirits is epistemically justified. It presents two arguments in support of the existence of spirits and arguments that experiences of various sorts (perceptions, mediumship, possession, and animistic experiences) can lend justification to spirit-beliefs. Most work in philosophy of religion exclusively deals with the existence of God or the epistemic status of belief in God. Spirit beliefs are often regarded as aberrations, and the falsity of such beliefs is often assumed. This book argues that various beliefs concerning spirits can be regarded as justified when they are rooted in experiences that are not defeated. It argues that spirit-beliefs are not defeated by recent theories put forth by neuroscientists, cognitive scientists or evolutionary biologists. Additional arguments are made that traditional theistic belief is epistemically linked to spirit beliefs and that unusual events can be explained in terms of spirit-activity. The Epistemology of Spirit Beliefs will be of interest to researchers and advanced students working in philosophy of religion, religious epistemology, ethnography and cognitive neuroscience. Welcome to an interview with the author of Building Trust: Exceptional Leadership in an Uncertain World, Darryl Stickel. In his book, Darryl outlines his groundbreaking Trust Unlimited blueprint for building trust. Stickel moves away from the traditional approach of influencing people's willingness to trust—the con artist's tactic—to employing one or more of ten levers, which leaders can “pull” to close the gap between how much they are trusted and how much they should be. This approach also makes them more trustable and increases trust where it is deficient. Darryl Stickel is one of the world's leading experts on trust with over twenty years of experience. The promise and potential of higher education remain popular in good economic times and bad. Even more popular is the prospect of not paying full price for a degree! Amy and Mike invited educator Dr. Kuni Beasley to reveal some colleges that offer the best scholarships and financial aid. What are five things you will learn in this episode? Why does college cost so much and what are the best ways to lower out-of-pocket costs? How can families find low-cost colleges? Which colleges offer the best financial aid? Which colleges offer automatic, easily accessible scholarships? How can one earn institutional scholarships regardless of family income? MEET OUR GUEST Dr. Kuni Michael Beasley, the founder of Beasley College Prep, has a BS from Texas Christian University (GO Frogs!), an MBA from Oklahoma City University, a Doctor of Ministry in Greek and Hebrew from Tyndale Seminary, and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Arlington. He has been helping students prepare for college for over 40 years. Dr. Beasley has helped students enroll in the top colleges in the country including Harvard, West Point, Stanford, Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, Pepperdine, and MIT, with many on full scholarships. Dr. Beasley has an eclectic background. After earning his undergraduate degree, he served on active duty with the Army where he was the youngest commander in Europe in charge of a nuclear Field Artillery unit. When he returned to the US, he oversaw Officer Training and developed several novel training strategies that won him a medal for his efforts. While on active duty, Dr. Beasley earned his master's degree in fifty weeks by attending classes at night. He left active duty to take a position with the Federal Reserve Bank where he was a Training Specialist, Management Systems Coordinator, and Strategic Planner. While there, he worked on the new currency and applied creative ideas to operations and check processing. From there, Dr. Beasley was the International Management Consultant for Caltex Petroleum overseeing executive development and strategic training for executives in 55 countries. Dr. Beasley left corporate America to pursue a personal passion to coach football. In his first year as a high school football coach, Coach Beasley's team won the 1994 Texas AAA state championship. He returned to coaching in 2021 and led his team to the state championship game again. Seeing that many students were under-challenged, in 1996, Dr. Beasley started his own school in a rented Sunday School room at the First Baptist Church in Duncanville, Texas, with seven students. By 2009, there were 22 schools from Springfield, Massachusetts to Hot Springs, Arkansas, to Palm Springs, California. He initiated a College Readiness business taking his unique preparation process to the public and private school students. His SAT and ACT prep programs were used in public schools in nine states. Dr. Beasley taught college for sixteen years at several institutions to include Northwood University, Dallas Baptist University, University of Texas at Arlington, and thirteen years at LeTourneau University. He is credentialed to teach at the graduate level in 14 subject areas to include Business, Political Science, Public Administration, Urban Studies, Economics, Psychology, Geography, and Military History. His Ph.D. is in Urban and Public Administration where he wrote his dissertation on the transition of the Federal Reserve in the late 80's. He earned his Doctor of Ministry in Greek and Hebrew studies concurrently with his Ph.D. Very few can bring a portfolio with military command, championship coaching, academic achievement, college teaching, school administration, and the innovative entrepreneurship to build a nationwide business. Medical-related fields can be hard to get into and get through. They're even harder if you're the first person in your family to not only pursue this kind of career but the first one to go to college. And tough if you didn't learn math, science and history through traditional K-12 education. These experiences are true of the guests joining MPR News host Angela Davis. They've both graduated from school at Mayo Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in Rochester, Minn. and they're focusing their careers on racial disparities in medicine and helping marginalized populations. They will share their personal stories and how they plan to help marginalized populations in their medical careers. Guests: Minerva Orellana graduated from the Mayo Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences last month with her Ph.D. in biomedical science. Her graduate research focuses on uterine fibroids in women of color and her post-doctoral research will address gynecological cancers in Black women. Kenneth Valles graduated in December from Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences with his Ph.D. and he's in his final year of medical school and will graduate as a doctor of medicine from Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine. His Ph.D. research looked at the challenges, disparities and possible solutions to diseases common among migrant populations, refugees and asylum seekers in Minnesota.

Join Dr. Holmes as she interviews researcher and clinician Dr. Will Carroll on the topic of Autism Female Phenotypes. The discussion includes why females may be missed, and the diagnoses females receive before a later autism identification. Dr. Carroll will discuss a missed opportunity of research, and that is information a sister can provide with insight into having a sister on the spectrum. Other topics covered in this discussion: are friendships, eating disorders, depression, and suicide, as well as passionate interests. From Dr. Carroll's Research:From my own research, I found two types of interests: shared and unique interests. In the shared category, the women with ASD shared their interests, specifically with their sisters. These shared interests included media like cartoons and sci-fi shows or entertainment, arts and crafts, and reading. This is in comparison to those interests that were unique to the woman with ASD, such as academics, including history, art, literature, foreign languages, and musical instrument playing.Consider the systemizable factor to these Special Interests. There was a noticeable overlap in the interests, including the woman with ASD enjoying TV shows both by herself and with her sister and the woman with ASD doing crafts or handy work both by herself and with her sister. When the woman with ASD had a trusted companion (sister, parent), they could let go of their Special Interest for a time and engage in hobbies that didn't involve collecting.Considering the Female Autism Phenotype, the theory is that traits of ASD in women are uniquely different from those of men. Though my research did not look at men with ASD and their brothers, research suggests that women with ASD are more likely to have Special Interests more closely aligned with neurotypical women (Harrop et al, 2018). In my own practice, I see a number of women with ASD. Their Special interests include drawing, small gardening, collecting small tokens from an internet or video game they like, and video gaming. These women report liking the video games for the social aspect as well as the story and the achievements they earn while playing the game (Genshin Impact, Animal Crossing).Bio:Dr. Will Carroll is a licensed professional counselor in the state of Georgia. As investors, entrepreneurs, or leaders of our businesses, we need to be at our best to achieve our goals and reach success. Transforming our lives, elevating our performance, and creating the best version of ourselves can help us overcome challenges and make the most of opportunities. We can improve decision-making, increase productivity, have better relationships, and enhance our overall well-being and growth. In short, we become more successful, happier, and fulfilled individuals. But how can we do all this? We are fortunate today to have the world's leading expert on the psychology of entrepreneurial leadership and exponential growth, Dr. Benjamin Hardy, to help us process and think about these ideas through an in-depth discussion of his books. We delve into the concept behind Dr. Hardy's bestselling book "Who Not How" and how investors and entrepreneurs can make it work to their advantage. Dr. Hardy also shares insights from his book "The Gap and The Gain" and explains why successful people focus on the gain, while unsuccessful people focus on the gap. We also discuss key points in his latest book "Be Your Future Self Now" and why imagining the person we want to be and then "being" that person now is the key to self-transformation. Finally, Dr. Hardy also shares the fascinating story of how he became immersed in his chosen field of psychology and the key relationships that have played crucial roles in his journey. Get ready to be inspired and motivated to reach your full potential! Key Points from This Episode: Dr. Hardy talks about his background and upbringing. How did Dr. Hardy become immersed in the psychology of high performance and individual transformation? Dr. Hardy reflects on some key relationships that have played crucial roles in his journey toward achieving his goals and helped catalyze his growth and progress. What were the circumstances that led to the relationships with Joe Polish and with Dan Sullivan? Dr. Hardy discusses the key concepts behind “Who Not How”, the bestselling book he co-authored with Dan Sullivan, and offers advice on how investors and entrepreneurs can make it work to their advantage. More tips on how to retrain the brain to unleash the ability to ask smarter questions such as “who can do this for me?” instead of “how can I do this?” What are the key points in the book “ The Gap and The Gain” that Dr. Hardy co-authored with Dan Sullivan? Why do the unsuccessful focus on the gap while the successful focus on the gain and become increasingly successful at achieving their biggest goals? How the feeling of success and the recognition of wins, however small, contribute to improvement in performance and achievement of better outcomes Dr. Hardy discusses his recent book “Be Your Future Self Now” which focuses on “being” rather than “becoming”. Dr. Hardy asserts that imagining the person that we want to be and then being that person now is key to self-transformation. Why our imagined future, not our past, should direct our behavior and why it is important to set measurable goals now. Dr. Hardy answers the Rare Air Questionnaire.
