Today's guest is Sergey Gorbunov, co-founder of Axelar. Axelar is a universal interoperability platform that connects all blockchains through a decentralized network and an SDK of protocols and APIs. Using the network and SDK, developers can efficiently integrate their applications across all blockchain ecosystems creating greater access to users, assets, liquidity and other applications. Sergey is also an Assistant Professor at the University of Waterloo (2016 - present). He is interested in building cryptographic primitives, protocols, and systems that enable new applications in untrusted and distributed environments. He received a Ph.D. from MIT, where he was a Microsoft Ph.D. fellow and MSc and BSc from UToronto. His Ph.D. dissertation was on designing cryptographic tools for the cloud using lattice-based cryptography for which he received the Sprowls Doctoral Thesis Award for best thesis in CS at MIT. He was on the founding team of Algorand where he was involved in various business and technical aspects of the company and led the cryptography group. He also spent some time at IBM T.J. Watson Research Centre. We discuss Axelar, Interoperability, Blockchain Design, DeFi, and much more. We begin our conversation by discussing Axelar. Sergey explains how Axelar enables interoperability. We discuss how Axelar is building the infrastructure needed to build a decentralized platform like Binance and Coinbase. Our next discussion topic focused on the proliferation of layer-1s. Sergey explains how the pursuit of scalability influences the development of new Layer-1s and other scalability solutions. Sergey further addresses scalability by explaining the relationship between scalability, application, and design. Sergey stresses the importance of understanding how use cases will continue dictating the design of blockchains. Our next conversation topic centered around the bear market. MakerDAO is the godfather of the stablecoin application, with the introduction of DAI to the blockchain space. Now they're aggressively expanding to address a multichain economy. DAI is a Collateralized Debt Position (CDP) based stablecoin that has recently been bridged over to the Cosmos ecosystem via the Osmosis DEX. Axelar has announced a retroactive airdrop to OSMO-DAI LPs who've bridged over net new DAI through the Axelar bridge within an (as yet) unspecified window of time.

Today on Fortune Teller Podcast we are talking with Sergey Gorbunov, Co-Founder of Axelar Network. The Axelar Network brings Decentralized Interoperability to Ethereum, Cosmos Avalanche, Terra, Moonbeam and others, by unlocking cross-chain communications. Blockchain platform builders can plug-in their blockchain ecosystem to all other blockchain ecosystems. Dapp builders can host their dapps anywhere, as well as lock, unlock, and transfer assets, and speak with dapps on other chains via Axelar API. Users are able to interact with all applications across each blockchain's ecosystem right from their wallet. Axelar is empowered by a decentralized and open network of validators. Any user can join, use it, and partake in the Axelar protocol. Byzantine consensus, cryptography, and incentives are used to ensure high-safety and liveness needs for cross-chain requests. The network is a universal platform to connects all blockchains via a decentralized network and an SDK of protocols and APIs. With the network and SDK, developers can effectively make new connections and implement their dapps with all blockchain ecosystems. This creates greater access to users, assets, liquidity, and many other applications. Axelar differs from similar projects in that current projects work on interoperability within their own ecosystems. They generally lack methods to connect external blockchains based off of different consensus rules and software stacks. The need to provide interoperability in the wider crypto ecosystem has been met with unproven centralized point-to-point bridging options created in the market. Axelar gives a complete solution to cross-chain interactions that is made to be interoperable with any chain. This allows for plug-and-play connectivity with little work to integrate new chains, and is made to be decentralized. Axelar features cross-chain routing and application-level transfer protocols. This lets builders access all interconnected chains via the Axelar network. This results in allowing developers to build on the best platforms that suit their needs and use global liquidity and composability. Due to being decentralized, it is open for anyone to participate in. Being universal in connecting, it is possible to scale across arbitrary Layer 1, Layer 2, Proof of Work (PoW) or Proof of Stake (PoS) chains. Retail users will be able to take advantage of cross-chain asset transfer workflows directly within the apps that they already use. The Axelar Network has already been audited by NCC, Cure53, and Oak Security. Axelar continues to perform audits of other components and functionalities, stress-testing, and pen-testing of its network throughout development. In January 2022, the Public Mainnet roll out begins, after initial interrogations with Bitcoin, Ethereum, and the support of arbitrary EVM chains have happened. Sergey Gorbunov is the co-founder of Axelar Network. With the rise of alternate L1s, the crypto landscape and DeFi assets are more fragmented. Axelar's stack provides a decentralized network, protocols, tools, and APIs that allow for simple cross-chain communication. Sergey received his PhD from MIT in Computer Science. Way back in 2013, he was a crypto researcher for IBM before going on to join the founding team at Algorand. In addition to co-founding Axelar, he is an assistant professor at the University of Waterloo. On the show today, we have Sergey Gorbunov, co-founder of Axelar. Axelar network is a decentralized state machine responsible for facilitating cross-chain requests. Axelar's gateway protocol is a delivery and routing protocol that can work with any arbitrary blockchain regardless of consensus. This means any decentralised network can plug-in to Axelar seamlessly to access liquidity amongst other things from all other decentralised networks. Axelar also gives developers the freedom to connect their dApp into external networks that might have been previously inaccessible to them without redesigning the smart contracts. The show with Sergey covers his previous experience, how Axelar is different from Cosmos and Polkadot, what validators do for the network, their solution for scaling threshold cryptography and their vision for an interoperability network that is consensus and state transition agnostic.
