EigenLayer has been in the news this week after it announced its ‘stakedrop,' where it will distribute EIGEN tokens to early users of the restaking platform. Sreeram Kannan, founder and CEO of EigenLayer, and Robert Drost, CEO and executive director of the Eigen Foundation, discuss the launch of the token, a “universal intersubjective work token” and how it allows for slashing, or penalizing, for externally observable faults, such as data unavailability. The Eigen Foundation, a non-profit entity based in the Cayman Islands, was also recently established to grow the protocol and assist in creating a decentralized community. They also address criticisms of the token's launch, including geoblocking and the initial non-transferability of stakedrops for the community and explain why they decided to allocate an additional 100 EIGEN tokens for all participants in the stakedrop. Plus, they reveal a target date by when a decision about the token unlock date should be made. Show highlights: The buzz around the universal intersubjective work token and what it was created for What constitutes the digital commons and its two primary characteristics How the EIGEN token is designed to prevent the necessity of forking an entire blockchain Whether dapps should evolve into AVSes and EigenLayer's complementary role to Ethereum, not replacing it Why the Eigen Foundation was established and how it differs from Eigen Labs Robert's response to the criticism regarding the exclusion of certain countries Why EIGEN will be distributed linearly, despite it potentially favoring whales EigenLayer's announcement of an updated stakedrop, after listening to community feedback The critique of the vesting schedule and Robert's explanation of when the lock period actually starts Why Sreeram believes that transfer restrictions are beneficial and empowering for users What the next steps are for EigenLayer Thank you to our sponsors! iTrustCapital Polkadot VaultCraft Guests Sreeram Kannan, founder of EigenLayer Previous appearance on Unchained: Why EigenLayer May Be the Most Innovative New Ecosystem Since Ethereum Do You Need to Think Twice Before Restaking Your Assets? Eigenlayer token details are here! Don't call it an Airdrop - This is a Stakedrop — because that's the only thing you can do with your EIGEN tokens out of the gate. 15% of the total Supply of Eigen distributed over multiple Seasons, Season 1 starts today with 5% of the supply, and one of the most sophisticated set of smart contracts on Mainnet. EIGEN is not your typical ERC20 token. It's got this feature called “Intersubjective Forking” that increases the scope of what Eigenlayer can provide security for. In addition to the token details getting released, we're also getting the Eigen Foundation, with a new director Robert Drost - who joins Sreeram today to walk us through everything you need to know. In this episode, Austin chats with Sreeram Kannan (Eigen Labs) about EigenLayer's vision for restaking. Sreeram argues that restaking is merely a way of making proof-of-stake networks more programmable, addressing the economic and architectural considerations required to make the restaking thesis work. The conversation also elucidates the relationship between EigenLayer and the Ethereum L1, particularly in the context of settlement and data availability, and how restaking may also one day be applied to blockchains outside the Ethereum ecosystem. In this episode I talk to Sreeram Kannan founder of EigenLayer, a revolutionary new crypto protocol that is the foundation of an entire new wave of applications, use cases and brand new crypto concepts that are being born. Sreeram was a postdoctoral scholar at University of California, Berkeley and a visiting postdoc at Stanford University who was studying computational biology before founding EigenLayer. EigenLayer introduces a new concept commonly called "restaking" but more accurately called programable staking. It sounds complicated but I swear after listening to this podcast you should have a decent understanding of what it is and why it's important. Understanding how it works and why it's important is some of the most impactful alpha you can gain in the space.... That's because after talking with Sreeram I'm convinced EigenLayer will absolutely change EVERYTHING. ----------- THE OBSIDIAN COUNCIL PREMIUM MEMBERSHIP

Sreeram Kannan, co-founder and CEO of EigenLayer, discusses his journey into Web3, why he left academia to build a blockchain product, and how EigenLayer is solving some of the biggest challenges in the crypto ecosystem. Sreeram's journey into the realm of Web3 began with a deep-seated belief in the power of innovation to drive positive change. He recognized the potential of blockchain technology to democratize innovation and empower individuals to create value without the need for established reputations or access to exclusive resources. This unwavering belief led Sreeram to abandon his academic career and embark on his entrepreneurial journey into the world of crypto. “This idea that as an innovator, you don't need to bring trust. You only need to bring your innovation, and that the blockchain brings the trust is such a mind-bending idea that enables a whole new generation of people to actually come in and create systems.” Sreeram initially developed two blockchain products before venturing into EigenLayer, which he tells us can have maximum impact on blockchain's future. EigenLayer's core concept is restaking, allowing stakers to make additional promises beyond the Ethereum protocol. Eigen DA facilitates on-chain computation of high-throughput use cases, such as social media and gaming applications. It introduces a reserved data availability layer, ensuring guaranteed access to data for specific users. Join us as we explore the inner workings of EigenLayer, gain insights into its potential impact on the Web3 landscape, and discover the inspiration behind Sreeram's unwavering dedication to innovation and positive change in the first episode of Beacon Podcast Web3 Unlocked's third season.
In this week's interview, EigenLayer CEO and Founder Sreeram Kannan and Principal Researcher Soubhik join us to unpack how EigenLayer aims to become the coordination infrastructure of Web3. They discuss the vision for EigenLayer as a platform that allows developers to build and integrate specialized protocols through a shared security model backed by Ethereum staking. Kannan outlines the roles of stakers, node operators, and developers building actively validated services (AVS) within the EigenLayer ecosystem. They also explore potential AVS use cases like rollups, bridges, fast finality, and applied cryptography. They close out by discussing potential enshrinement and the 2023-2024 roadmap. Sreeram Kannan is the Founder and CEO of EigenLayer (https://www.eigenlayer.xyz/).Backed by Blockchain Capital, Figment Capital, WAGMI Ventures, & more, EigenLayer is the first market for decentralized trust—creating an ecosystem for restaking, which enables staked ETH to be used as cryptoeconomic security for protocols other than Ethereum, in exchange for protocol fees and rewards. In this episode we discuss Sreeram's journey through academia, the key insights that produced EigenLayer, the many use cases enabled by EigenLayer, the importance of focus for early-stage projects, and much more.Recorded Monday July 10th, 2023.
What are the implications of restaking? Not every Bankless listener will be prepared for this conversation. This one is a hard one. If you want to be adequately equipped for the conversation that awaits, we recommend listening to the Bankless episode we did with Sreeram a few weeks ago. That episode will get you up to speed to understand some of the nuances and problems that are discussed in today's episode. Because, today on the show, we have the largest and most gigabrain panel that we've ever had on Bankless…Vitalik Buterin, Justin Drake, Dankrad Feist, Jessy (aka 13-year-old VC - that's her pseudonym), and of course… Sreeram Kannan himself, founder of Eigenlayer and perhaps the creator of restaking…all moderated by Tim Beiko! ------
Sreeran Kannan, Founder of Eigenlayer, is an assistant professor at the University of Washington, Seattle, where he runs the information theory lab focussing on information theory and its applications in communication networks, machine learning, and blockchain systems. He was a postdoctoral scholar at the University of California, Berkeley, and a visiting postdoc at Stanford University between 2012-2014, before which he received his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering and M.S. in Mathematics from the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign. His team has built EigenLayer, a protocol built on Ethereum that introduces restaking, a new primitive in cryptoeconomic security. This primitive enables the reuse of ETH on the consensus layer. SUsers that stake ETH natively or with a liquid staking token (LST) can opt-in to EigenLayer smart contracts to restake their ETH or LST and extend cryptoeconomic security to additional applications on the network to earn additional rewards. Join us to learn more about Eigenlayer and new systems being built in digital assets.

Sreeram Kannan, Founder of EigenLayer, joins this episode to talk about the innovative power that EigenLayer is bringing to Ethereum. In this episode we discuss EigenLayer's data availability layer for ETH L2s to roll down to, which saves costs and solves congestion issues and EigenLayer's re-staking layer which allows ETH stakers to opt in to support new use cases, earning more yield while accepting more slashing conditions, instead of apps having to roll their own security. Sreeram is extremely smart (his academic papers here), I learned a ton during this episode and I hope you do as well. Please share your thoughts and favorite parts of the episode with us on Twitter. Sometimes, the frontier is at a crypto conference. One of the most prestige being, ETHDenver! We're back with a handful of exclusive interviews with some of the most fascinating minds in crypto. Wish you could make it to all the crypto conferences, but don't have the time? Don't worry, Bankless brings the frontier to you. In this episode, we're talking to Sreeram Kannan of EigenLayer, a platform to leverage Ethereum security through the innovative method of restaking. Sreeram and David chat about EigenLayer's evolution, wen mainnet(?!), what the EigenLayer competition looks like, and much more! ‘ ------
Sreeram Kannan is the Founder of EigenLayer. He is also an associate professor at University of Washington Seattle, where he runs the UW Blockchain Lab. In this episode, we cover everything you need to know about one of the most talked about projects in crypto. Getting to know EigenLayer in 2023 will be like getting a head start on liquid staking back in 2020. Sreeram walks us through how he came upon the idea that Ethereum could eventually export its trust to other blockchains, apps, and protocols through restaking ETH via EigenLayer. EigenLayer is a marketplace for decentralized trust. Similar to how venture capital decouples the need for entrepreneurs to have both innovative ideas and the capital to execute on their vision, EigenLayer decouples the need for a coincidence of both innovation and trust, so that blockchain builders with expertise to build new Web3 products can simply leverage the trust/security of Ethereum. THIS IS NOT A RECOMMENDATION OR ENDORSEMENT TO BUY ANY TOKEN OR NFT RELATED TO ANY PLATFORMS DISCUSSED. ------

EigenLayer is a 'programmable slashing' layer2 protocol built on Ethereum which leverages security through the method of restaking. This is a bootstrapping mechanism which allows existing Eth2 stakers to access the collateral in the staking system to provide additional services, for additional yield, while taking on additional risk. We were joined by founder Sreeram Kannan who explained to us the concept of re-staking, how this works in the EigenLayer protocol, use cases, and the roadmap ahead.Topics covered in this episode:Sreeram's background and how he got into cryptoHis role at the University of Washington Blockchain LabEigenLayer and the concept of re-stakingThe risk with 'programmable slashing'The participants in the EigenLayer economyImpact on decentralization and home stakersEigenDA and other EigenLayer use casesCombatting malicious slashingThe EigenLayer roadmapEpisode links: Episode B007 - Devcon Panel – Censorship Resistance and Credible NeutralityEigenLayerEigenLayer on TwitterSreeram on TwitterSponsors: Omni: Access all of Web3 in one easy-to-use wallet! Sreeram Kannan is the founder of EigenLayer, an Ethereum staking collective leveraging trust, hyperscaling blockchains, and unleashing open innovation. In this highly technical episode, we dive deep into proof of work vs. proof of stake, staking, restaking, Ethereum throughput, and permissionless innovation. Sreeram kicks off the episode by introducing and explaining fragmented trust networks. One of the amazing value propositions for blockchain technology is that it allows permissionless and trustless innovation - any developer can join the ecosystem and start creating. But this trustless technology is only valuable if the core infrastructure innovators around the world decide to actually utilize it. To help them do so, Sreeram created Eigen Layer with the intention of lowering their barrier to entry into the Ethereum ecosystem. We discuss the ways in which Eigen Layer enables restaking and Sreeram walks us through the actual process of native staking. He explains how he foresees the Eigen ecosystem growing and shares a few of the possibilities Eigen enables. We discuss the importance of increasing Ethereum's bandwidth and Sreeram shares how Eigen Layer can help this initiative. We also explore risk mitigation and all of the ways in which the folks over at Eigen are tackling the issue of security, with decentralization not only being a core value of the Eigen team, but its main value proposition. To close out the episode, Kathrine and Ash recap the discussion and break down some of the more intellectually challenging topics discussed.
