Dr. Sharon R. Jackson is a life-long early childhood advocate and a seasoned professional with experience in local, state, and national presentations throughout her career. She is an encourager by nature…From a background that includes public schools, military childcare centers, faith-based organizations, and for-profit settings, her experience is not only wide-ranging but also deeply grounded in appropriate practice and respect for young children. Dr. Jackson has held positions of leadership in her community and in the organizations in which she has been employed. She earned her PhD from Texas A&M University and is currently a professor of early childhood education at Blinn College in College Station. Today, we're talking about the importance of the environment as the third teacher – the philosophy that spaces can significantly influence development and learning. Sharon will emphasize just how important the environment is–It's not just physical objects like books and toys; it also includes the emotional well-being of the children. While we discuss the third teacher that originated from the Reggio philosophy, we will also talk about the role of parents as the child's first teacher. We're also going to chat about the adult in the classroom as the second teacher. Second teachers have the important job of giving comfort, consistency, and connection in creating a supportive social-emotional environment for young children. Together, we'll discuss the benefits of a well-laid-out environment, such as promoting learning, language development, and creativity, as well as building children's confidence! We will address the challenges of creating an appropriate environment, including the pressure to focus on academics and parental expectations. Recognizing the needed respect for children in the stage that they are in, being who they are, rather than pushing and rushing them toward some other agenda is so valuable. What a difference that mindset shift could make in creating environments for the children in our care. I hope this episode makes you pause for a moment and think about your classroom environment a little differently. And I hope you'll “get on your knees at the door” and consider the children's perspective and also…God's perspective on this adventure in early childhood. THE KELLY CARDENAS PODCAST PRESENTS Sharon Jackson was born on April 15, 1966. She is the last of six children born to Pastor Andrew and the late Lady Lottie Jackson. She has been singing for as long as she can remember. As a child she would sing with her brothers and sisters at church, as well as at home around the kitchen table. Music has always been a part of her family. She came to realize at an early age that God had anointed her to sing praises unto Him. She graduated from Memphis Central High School in 1984 and went on to attend Emory University in Atlanta, GA. However, as a junior, she transferred to University of Memphis where she received her B.A. in Psychology. Sharon began leading Praise and Worship in 1986 at Faith Temple Ministries Church in Memphis, TN where her father, Andrew Jackson, is the founder and Pastor Emeritus, and her brother, Ivory Jackson is the current pastor. She has found that worship is a lifestyle that one must live out daily, being fully aware that God is ever present and ever near. The Lord has truly anointed her to lead His people into His presence, and she counts it a privilege, as well as an awesome responsibility to have been chosen by God to do so. She served as the coordinator and worship leader for the Praise and Worship Team at her church for 25 years and she also served as the choir director and trainer. For the last 12 years, Sharon has been serving as the Minister of Music at Greater Community COGIC in Marietta, GA where the pastor is Bishop Matthew Brown. She served for 16 years, from 2000-2016, 8 years as the Assistant Coordinator, and 8 years as the Coordinator of the Church of God in Christ International Praise Team “Send Judah First” under the leadership of the International Music Department Ministers of Music, Professor Iris Stevenson McCullough and Dr. Judith Christie McAllister. Sharon was blessed to record a Live Praise and Worship CD in September of 2004 entitled “Make His Praise Glorious.” She has also had the privilege of singing on several recordings, including Judith Christie McAllister's “Sound The Trumpet,” as well as the Tennessee Fourth Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction Mass Choir where she led the title track “When I Get There” written by the legendary V. Michael McKay, which she was also blessed and honored to sing at the National Homegoing Celebration of former COGIC Presiding Bishop G. E. Patterson. She was also blessed to sing on the recording project of Pastor Linwood Dillard and the Voices of Citadel. She is currently working on a new project hopefully to be released in early 2024. Sharon is the proud mother of two beautiful daughters, Brittany Elizabeth and Sophia Antonette. Her desire is to, in all things and at all times, make the praises of God glorious. As she noticed major concerns on the state level Sharon felt compelled to run for Lieutenant Governor in 2018. Upon her defeat, Sharon was appointed by her Governor to serve in the Alaska State House of Representative for District 13 where she served with loyalty and worked with both sides on policies that best represented the people of Alaska.Since leaving office, her primary focus is on alternative medicine where she witnessed people with debilitating, chronic illnesses now living a functional life that they thought was impossible. As a stroke survivor, where the left side of her body was paralyzed and she lost her speech, Sharon was determined to get her independence back and recovered. She knows personally that there are different medical modalities that assist with healing.
