On Valentine's Day, Eric Anderson showed up for work at Indiana Dunes National Park. Hours later, he learned by email (from someone he didn't know) that he had been fired. Anderson is one of the many thousands of federal employees blindsided by mass layoffs orchestrated by the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, led by tech billionaire Elon Musk. Officials claim the cuts are saving taxpayers millions, but critics warn they're gutting essential services and putting public safety at risk. As legal battles unfold and DOGE continues these reductions, the question remains: Is this about efficiency, or is something bigger at play? Just about 40 miles outside of Chicago and nestled on the shores of Lake Michigan, Indiana Dunes National Park, combined with the neighboring state park of the same name, protects over 17,000 acres of sand dunes, ecological wonders, and diverse habitats. Amongst them sits a swell dedicated to the life and legacy of one of the earliest advocates of the park. To those of her time, she was known as the “mysterious nymph of the dunes,” but today she is better known as “Diana.” For nearly a decade, Alice Mabel Gray lived amidst the sand. Escaping from the never-ceasing pace of Chicago during the second industrial revolution and leaving behind a life of higher education, her days were spent much like those of the modern park visitor: swimming in the lake, pacing long stretches of beautiful shoreline, and trekking through quiet woodlands. Like many others, she was in search of solitude, but as Alice came to find companionship in the dunes, her story would baffle the nation and lead to legends based on both truth and rumor. Paul is a self-proclaimed city kid whose transformational experience outdoors changed his life and charted his course to work in the outdoors. Alice Mabel Gray was given the name, Diana of the Dunes, after she left society to live off the land on the shores of Lake Michigan. We covered her story partially in a prior episode - focusing on the haunted folklore around her afterlife. Today we are revisiting her story to delve deep into her life, including her mysterious partner, a gruesome murder they were accused of committing, and the truth behind Alice's tragic death. We love our National Parks and we know you do too but when you're out there, remember to enjoy the view but watch your back. Representatives from NIPSCO and JustTransition NWI are on Regionally Speaking to discuss coal ash removal at the Michigan City Generating Station.

“Let’s go to the beach! The beach! The beach!” my son kept saying. “That’s not gonna happen, buddy,” I told him. “We’re in Indiana.” To my surprise, we saw a sign for the Indiana Dunes National Park, with a large lake and a beach (please forgive my ignorance of geography). That’s where the same son, who can’t swim, stepped into water that immediately covered his head. I panicked mildly, then lifted him out of the water to safety. Whereas yesterday’s shield metaphor indicated God’s protection from direct attacks, today we learn that wisdom saves us from more indirect attacks: the allure of evil. Proverbs 2:12 says wisdom will rescue us “from the ways of wicked men,” and 2:16 says “wisdom will save you also from the adulterous woman.” The original audience of Proverbs was primarily young men, so the author highlights the ways a young man might be tempted. Men can also be adulterous, and women can also be wicked, but that’s not the point Solomon is making here. Solomon compares wisdom to a father lifting his son out of too-deep waters. The crooked path of wicked men promises much, as does the “wayward woman with her seductive words” (v. 16), but wisdom quickly lifts us out of the water and shows us the truth: “the upright will live in the land, and the blameless will remain in it; but the wicked will be cut off from the land, and the unfaithful will be torn from it” (vv. 21–22). Wisdom rescues us by showing us what awaits us at the end of each road, and only one road leads to life. >> There are times when we, too, are in over our head. We find ourselves in situations that threaten to drown us; we have no idea what to do. Rest assured that your heavenly Father is present and ready to scoop you out of your circumstances. He is with you.

"Times" business reporter Joseph Pete talks about the stories he's recently put out in print and online, including news of a very noisy explosion at Cleveland-Cliffs Burns Harbor (but, luckily, resulted in no injuries and little damage), a lawsuit over a local school district COVID-19 mask policy and the latest on always-shifting "Mount Baldy" at the Indiana Dunes National Park.

On the southern end of Lake Michigan, Indiana Dunes National Park has seen the water levels rise five feet since 2014, hastened by human-made structures and an increase in storms brought on by climate change. Higher water marks mean more erosion to the sand dunes that have run through the area for thousands of years. Zachary Green reports on how the park is adapting to the new normal. The story is part of our ongoing series on climate change, Peril & Promise. PBS NewsHour is supported by - https://www.pbs.org/newshour/about/funders

The Fungi Involved with Devil's Stovepipes at Mt. Baldy, Indiana Dunes National Park Peter Avis, PhD from University of Maine In 2013, a young boy fell in a hole at Mt. Baldy. Fortunately, he survived and the pursuit to understand the formation of these holes (aka Devil's Stovepipes) ensued. This presentation will cover an overview of the research colleagues and I have conducted to understand the role of fungi in the formation of these holes. The whole story is about the decomposition of wood conducted by fungi! Peter Avis, PhD recently moved to accept a position at the University of Maine. He formerly was at Indiana University Northwestfrom 2007 until 2020 and prior to that he had a post doctoral position with Greg Mueller at the Field Museum. His PhD is from Minnesota where he worked with Dave McLauglin, Ris Charvat and Trice Morrow. His research falls into three general categories: Fungal ecology and evolution, molecular methodology for the study of fungi, and ecological restoration monitoring. Did you know that the birthplace of ecology is Indiana? It’s true! The science of ecology was first described in good old Indiana—thanks in part to the spectacular forested sand dunes along the southern shore of Lake Michigan. In 2019, Indiana Dunes became the 61st national park. In this installment of BirdSense, Kelly Ball, advertising sales director at Bird Watcher’s Digest, discusses this gem and its 15,000 acres of birding turf with Brad Bumgardner, executive director of Indiana Audubon, and Indiana Dunes National Park superintendent Paul Labovitz. In 2014, Paul posed the fateful question, “Why don’t we put on an event for birding?” In 2015, the Indiana Dunes Birding Festival was born! This year’s event, May 13–16, will be a hybrid of in-person and virtual options. If you are interested in potentially getting 200 bird species in four days, check out this episode! Sponsored by the Indiana Dunes Birding Festival. Did you know? Redstart Birding will be the optics retail sponsor for the 2021 Indiana Dunes Birding Festival. Attendees will be eligible for a one-time 5% discount on a purchase, PLUS Redstart Birding will donate 5% back to Indiana Dunes Birding Festival Stewardship Fund on all purchases made during the event.

Surely if you listen to this podcast you've heard the news — America now boasts 61 National Parks. Buried within a massive spending bill protecting public lands signed by the President on February 15, 2019, was a provision that simply stated: Public Law 89-761 is amended by striking National Lakeshore each place it appears and replacing it with National Park. Today's episode—the new Indiana Dunes National Park. Like Joshua Tree, and Wind Cave, and Petrified Forest, Indiana Dunes National Park is much more than the singular characteristic it's named after. It features more than 1,100 native plants ranking it fourth in plant diversity among all National Park Service sites. It's full of mysterious wetlands, bright prairies, wandering rivers and tranquil forests. You can play on the massive sand dunes, but you can also harvest maple sugar from the park's historic farm. One of the most unique features of Indiana Dunes National Park has little to do with nature at all. It's a set of 5 houses with an interesting past.

Its beaches run along about 15 miles of the Lake Michigan shoreline.
