Kidnapped from her prestigious Liverpool boarding school on March 7, 1827, 15-year-old Ellen Turner was led to believe her family would be financially ruined if she didn't marry her 30 year-old abductor, Edward Gibbon Wakefield. Before she was able to deduce that his story was a sham, Turner was whisked off to Gretna Green and inadvertently passed over the keys to her father's estate, Shrigley, to her assailant - until an intervention from the House of Lords, and a trial that captured Britain's imagination. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly divulge the loopholes to England's marital age limits; explain how ‘impure' marriages were a get-rich-quick habit for Wakefield; and reveal the extraordinary next chapter for this conniving scamster … Further Reading: • ‘10 of History's Worst Marriages' (History Collection, 2018): https://historycollection.com/10-of-historys-worst-marriages/5/ • ‘Gretna Green: The bit of Scotland where English people go to get married' (BBC, 2014): https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-28679430 • ‘Wakefield & the NZ Company' (CBHS History, 2020): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=We-VfjxHbRA Ten minute daily episodes bringing you curious moments from this day in history, with Olly Mann, Rebecca Messina and Arion McNicoll: The Retrospectors. When you see a David Shrigley picture – at worst, you'll chuckle, at best you'll laugh out loud every time you think of it (which is sometimes years later.) The Shrigley universe is filled with badly drawn hands, everyday disappointment, and simple pleasures. In short, it's sublimely silly and pretty dark. Daniel speaks with the British artist during his Australian visit for the National Gallery of Victoria's Triennial. We meet up with Australian artist Daniel Boyd, fresh from his first major solo exhibition in Europe and who's just shown his work at the New York gallery that represents some high-flying international artists. And hear from Diana Al-Hadid, the Syrian-born US sculptor who's made stunning artworks in response to two 15th C. paintings owned by the National Gallery of Victoria – audience favourite The Garden of Love and a religious painting by Hans Memling.
"Art is an enquiry, it's not a demonstration of excellence for me". David Shrigley is a contemporary artist renowned for his distinctive blend of dark humor, absurdity, and keen observations. From his iconic doodles to his sculptures and animations, Shrigley's work has left an indelible mark on the art world. David joins the podcast to chat about his artistic process, dining in Australia and how his dog has inspired a new interactive work at the NGV Triennial. There doesn't seem to be anything more 1984 than taking what was one of the most popular selling books of the 21st century and printing an alternative text upon its ashes. There is that wonderful moment in Orwell's masterwork that reads "Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right." Okay, David Shrigley isn't some mastermind of double-think of mind control, but he is a conceptual artist. And this was his concept: after seeing a campaign gone viral where the Oxfam charity shop in Swansea had asked people to please stop bringing their copies of Dan Brown's "The Da Vinci Code" into the shop to resell, Shrigley decided to buy every copy he could of the novel with the purpose of re-printing over it as "1984." The project is called Pulped Fiction. As we noted earlier this week, fragments of the original novels remain on the paper, with letters and sometimes whole words of Robert Langdon's adventures appearing on the pages. The typeface was carefully chosen to mirror the type used for The Da Vinci Code's first edition, while the book's cover has been repurposed from the card backing and dustjackets of more than 1,250 copies of the hardback special edition. On this episode of the Radio Juxtapoz podcast, we sit down with David to discuss Pulped Fiction, the omnipresent shadow that 1984 continues to have on our world, the irony of erasing a text to reprint atop it, the beauty of charity shops and all things happening in the Shrigley world. The Radio Juxtapoz podcast is hosted by FIFTH WALL TV's Doug Gillen and Juxtapoz editor, Evan Pricco. Episode 124 was recorded on October 25, 2023 in Swansea and Los Angeles. Transformative Leadership Conversations with Winnie da Silva
Season 2; Episode 10: Lessons on Leadership from the Great Depression with Edward Shrigley For this last episode of Season Two, I have a surprise guest I am especially honored to introduce you to: my grandfather, Edward Shrigley. I wish I could interview my grandfather for this episode. But he died at 96 years old when I was just 17. So instead, I'm excited to tell you a few personal stories about my grandfather's leadership during the Great Depression. My dad, Jim Shrigley and I did some research together where we pieced together some of these stories. Key Takeaways from this Episode Edward Shrigley's five leadership principles: 1. Integrity and trustworthiness are foundational He convinced people to keep their money in the bank because he cultivated trust and demonstrated integrity – before, during and even after the Great Depression. The quality of his relationships was critical to his success. 2. Shared sacrifice for the common good can lead to prosperity for all People bought into his vision that, if everyone sacrificed for the common good, each of their individual decisions would eventually lead to prosperity for all. And while asking others to sacrifice, he was also willing to sacrifice by voluntarily giving up his salary for ten years. 3. Focus on achieving short-term results without abandoning long-term goals He made the connection between short and long-term results – keeping the bank solvent now, allowed the bank to pay its depositors in the long run. 4. Continuously and constantly communicate with your stakeholders My grandfather relentlessly and tirelessly communicated with his stakeholders for over ten years of uncertainty and hardship. 5. Hold fast to the belief that hope, and persistence will contribute to success His belief in the future of the bank enabled him to be persistent and to never give up hope. It was the fuel that drove him day to day, year to year. After a decade from first encounter, we cross paths with contemporary British artist DAVID SHRIGLEY once more, this time: digging deeper into the subtle inspirations behind his work through the vehicle of music. In this episode, SHRIGLEY points to the influence of coming of age in ‘70s and ‘80s, from his love of The Fall as true iconoclasts of the time, to appreciating the idiosyncrasies of a record sleeve as art itself.

Alright alright, so the name of this might have absolutely hee-haw relation to the actual content of the podcast. It's just that I went to the tip today in Bette, as I usually do, and they spat the dummy and tried to charge me commercial rates to dispose of my rubbish and recycling because the car had fucking 'advertising' on the side of it. As in, daft rally stickers. Does Bette seriously look like a fucking company car to you, you morons? Despite the fact that I emptied it all out on the ground and asked them to point to the commercial waste, of which there was precisely none, the best they could manage was 'well this time it's okay, but next time...' Next time what? Fucking what? Stupid stickers on the side of a car means I can't use the fucking municipal dump? Fucking idiots. Anyhow, pointless and utterly futile outrage aside, here are some excellent tunes for you once again. Next week will be the Virgin of the Birds Toad Session, so keep an eye out for that as well. Ahh. Glasgow-based artist David Shrigley works in various media, but is best known for his slightly bizarre and humourous illustrations. David enjoys his artistic freedom, he considers himself lucky. He talks about humour, how he is perceived, his DJ-ing and taste in music. He sometimes says he’s not really good at it, but drawing does come naturally to him. 30 sheets of paper every day, he tries to put a lot of variety in his drawing. There are lots of people he admires, but he contemplates about the meaning of heroism. He ends talking about the meaning and themes of his work, and his ventures into the medium of animated film. Recorded at the Integrated 2009 conference in Antwerp, Belgium.
