Welcome to Stupid Hearts Club. The Entertainment Community for everyone with a creative, open, loving, romantic and gloriously stupid heart!-------------------Hey there my Stupid Hearted angels.Alice Lowe is possibly the most fruitful creative person I know. In fact, when I went to her house, even her actual fruit bowl contained turnips, bananas, peppers, a pomegranate and much much more. I think that image kind of works as a very strong analogy for her output. As the reigning indie queen of UK cinema Alice has already delivered three cult classics with Sightseers, Prevenge and last years Timestalker, and in my opinion she is only just getting going. This chat is part 2 of a recording I did when I visited her near Stroud in my camper van Linda. This weeks chat is more about Alices career and our shared (and differing) experiences as UK writers in and around the world of comedy and the arts. It's a fantastic conversation that any budding or (struggling) creative will benefit from. There is a section of the conversation that is a little compromised by a zip or a button tapping Alices mic that I could not get rid of as it's woven into her words. So sorry about that, but I still think its v listenable, and Alices wisdom and wit will see us all through.EnjoyyyyStupid Hearts Club Forever Baby-------------------If you enjoy what I do and would like to help support all the time and effort I lovingly put into the world of Stupid Hearts Club, which now includes, podcasts, live music events, music collabs and more, then please consider becoming a paid subcriber to my Patreon! “I think a lot of my work is about aspiring to something lofty. And then failing at it. Which I find funny”, says Alice Lowe, director and star of ‘Timestalker', showed on the Piazza Grande at the 77th Locarno Film Festival. In a free-flowing conversation on her influences and artistic aspirations, Lowe – a major star of UK sketch comedy of the 2000s, director of “Prevenge” and co-writer of “Sightseers” – sat down on Locarno Meets to talk through the sheer Britishness of her latest time travel comedy extravaganza, influenced by everything from Sally Potter to Powell & Pressburger to “Doctor Zhivago”, and getting her start at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival walking through a giant tambourine.
WARNING THIS PODCAST CONTAINS AN UNNATURAL AMOUNT OF ALBATROS PAUSES AND AUDIO LEVEL NONSENSE! We return after an extended leave to discover that nothing works. Meanwhile Jim watches Art the Clown play with Lego, then watches all the Terrifier movies. Then goes onwards to watch Deadpool and Wolverine. Elton begins what will undoubtedly be a cursed project in keeping with all other projects mentioned on Blackdog. A project known as Project: Indoor Rain, Darren goes to the pub with Elton, Lee and a number of others down by the Thames and then deals with a major powercut. While Lee tries to fold time and space making a long video shorter and faster but also longer. And he also watches the second season of The Old Man on Disney+ After that its on to a couple of questions in Asking for Trouble and finally we move on to a nice holiday around National Trust land with Alice Lowe, Steve Oram and a fine pair of crochet knickers as we review Ben Wheatleys Sightseers. You may remember that Rob and Guy covered Peter Cook in quite some detail in our episode on the Rise & Rise of Michael Rimmer with our guest, Tom Salinsky of Best Pick Pod. Well, now we are talking about Cook & Moore as a duo, focusing mainly on Not Only But Also and, of course, our film for this week, Bedazzled. Rather neatly, another host of Best Pick joins us for the 1967 Faustian adaptation. John Dorney gets involved with our Pete & Dud-centric episode. Bedazzled, also starring Eleanor Bron, Raquel Welch, and Barry Humphries, is the first film we have covered on Britcom Goes to the Movies, which has a Hollywood remake. Much as the idea of a Tom Cruise-starring remake of On The Buses would excite us, it simply doesn't exist! To Rob and Guy's shame, they didn't watch the remake, but luckily our guest did and was more than happy to fill us in on that as well. Tom Salinksy and Jess Regan (the other two presenters of Best Pick) had chosen movies that shot straight to number one on our League table (although neither Michael Rimmer nor Sightseers stayed there), so could John continue this trend? Could Guy eat into Rob's quiz lead with John's questions on Cook & Moore? Find out by listening to episode 3! This week my guest is the amazing ALICE LOWE! Alice is an incredible comic actor who you'll know from her films Prevenge and Sightseers, as well as tons of other comedy including Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. We chatted in advance of her new film TIMESTALKER (out in all good cinemas NOW) and covered all manner of crushes from Peter Pan, to Jareth the Goblin King. I absolutely loved chatting to her and sort of wish we'd done it after I'd seen the film (I have, it's great) as there are so many Crushed themes to explore within it. For this special episode of The Art Career we travel behind the scenes of SPRING/BREAK Art Show to speak with co-directors Ambre Kelly, Andrew Gori, in addition to chatting with artists, Dani Klebes about her installation this year. SPRING/BREAK Art Show is an internationally recognized exhibition platform using underused, atypical, and historic New York City exhibition spaces to activate and challenge the traditional cultural landscape of the art market, typically but not exclusively during Armory Arts Week New York and Frieze Week LA. The 12th Edition of SPRING/BREAK Art Show New York City will be held from September 6th - 11th, 2023, with details on their 5th LA Exhibition to come. Founded by Andrew Gori and Ambre Kelly in 2009, The They Co. creative supergroup has organized, curated, facilitated and produced events with the New Museum, Brooklyn College, Art Hamptons, Flux Factory, Collective Show, Nuit Blanche New York, Silvershed, The Metric System, The Underground Library, Gowanus Studio Space, and numerous other community-based arts organizations. In May of 2011 and 2013, the group organized the SCHOOL NITE exhibition event for the New Museum's Festival of Ideas for the New City, and in September 2011 intercepted the city's San Gennaro Festival with a 90-foot sculptural interpretation of the Roman oculus, created by SOFTlab. Under the gender-melding moniker BOYFRIENDGIRLFRIEND, Gori and Kelly have collaborated on several formal projects, most recently their ongoing SIGHTSEERS photographic series since 2016. In 2017, SPRING/BREAK launched it's biannual IMMERSIVE program, with large-scale sculptural installations at a mall for the BKYLN IMMERSIVE in May 2017, followed by TIMES SQUARE IMMERSIVE, a Times Square Plaza takeover with monumental sculptures created onsite in each public plaza of Times Square in March 2019, and UPSTATE IMMERSIVE in 2021 with ten unique sculptures to create a sculpture garden in Poughkeepsie, NY during Upstate Arts Weekend. And another OLD SCHOOL IMMERSIVE Secret Show during Frieze Week. Gori and Kelly have new projects forming in the film and tv landscape and in the published written word in 2024 with collaborations upcoming with The Portland Museum of Art & more. Danielle Klebes lives and works at Wassaic Project in Wassaic, NY. Danielle has exhibited in notable galleries and museums throughout the United States, Europe, and Canada. Here's Adam with a bonus episode of all the factoids and thingamajigs we didn't quite get to on our recent “Sightseers” episode. We recommend you listen to our main episode (number 204) first, before diving into this cooling yet petrifying well of information. Hope you enjoy this little transmission from the Welcome To Horror Fact Library.
It's time for that summer break you deserve, as we turn our attention to Lady Jennifer's Birthday choice - Ben Wheatley's magnificent “Sightseers”. A film which teaches you that G.B.H. stands for Great British Holiday; that dogs and knitting don't mix; and that, at a push, faecal matter can be an interesting alternative to lipstick. The minds of writers/stars Alice Lowe and Steve Oram blend perfectly with director Ben Wheatley's cinematic (and sometimes brutal) vision in this pitch black comedy that pulls no punches; transposing the serial killer road movie over the mundanity of a pair of British misfits on a camping holiday. A film for anyone who knows that true horror is being trapped in a caravan, having a row, in the pouring rain. Watch (or re-watch) to avoid spoilers and join us.
It's time for one of those huge episodes. Well, it's a three parter anyways. 2012 was for me, a little bit of a slacker for horror movies, some would say that not enough time has elapsed to make this assessment, I say, shnozwaddle! The highs are really high & the lows can be quite messy. But, what do I think was the very greatest horror movie that came out during 2012? Well, here we have the top 10. The worst 10. A slew of also rans. Some awesome mates. Some special guests. Several pints of beer and a 5 hours of running time split over 3 episodes. The New and Improved British Invasion is well and truly underway, as Ian stops by the Channel 37 Home Office to remind everyone of the clear and present danger we are all in from that guy in the car next to us. Especially those two in the camper, as evinced by 2012's Sightseers. After that, we're reminded of a uniquely American sort of vehicular homicide, brought to us by some rookie director whose name we've already forgotten. Anyway, here's 1972's Duel.Email: info@channel-37.comTwitter: @WHXN37
Episode 2 of Series 2 sees another crossover with the Best Pick Podcast as another of its hosts Jessica Regan (our second guest after Tom Salinsky) joins to talk about the 2012 darkest of dark comedies Sightseers. Jess provided unparalleled insight into director Ben Wheatley's process, starring as she did in his 2009 sketch show The Wrong Door. We take a closer look at The Wrong Door, a show in which dinosaurs are dates, Pirates hijack commuter trains and Matt Berry puts John Virgo's trick shots in the shade, as well as a deep dive into Wheatley's third feature-length film, which became the first big screen starring roles for comedy collaborators Steve Oram and Alice Lowe. It helped to have a voice of Irish sanity to help assess a movie that so precisely captures a slice of English eccentricity, repressed anger and downright insanity! We also take a look at the use of double, double pop covers for needle drops and a supporting cast of some of the British movie industry's very best bit players. How would Guy and Rob get on with Jess' questions on the Oram and Lowe and could we have a new contender for the top spot? Find out in episode two. Ever wondered if your smartphone could give you more than just notifications? Imagine a world where cybernetic viruses spread through Wi-Fi, and your health is as vulnerable as your data privacy. That's the springboard for my co-host, Jordan Savage, and me as we kick things off with a laugh before diving headfirst into the darkest corners of the film "Sightseers." It's a slasher that carves up not only its victims but also the very fabric of thriller tropes, and we're here to dissect every bloody layer for your eerie entertainment. From the silver screen's chilling narratives to the equally gripping, albeit more personal, tales of my own health escapades, this episode takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions. We go from discussing the comedic side of chronic nosebleeds to the serious implications of self-medicating with fast food for anemia. And, as our feverish minds wander through the winding paths of conspiracy theories and the contentious topic of film reboots, you'll find yourself questioning reality alongside us.Capping off this cinematic sojourn, Jordan and I put the lens on Hollywood's current landscape, from SNL's latest missteps to the subtle artistry found in less celebrated movies like 'Copland'. Whether we're debating the pacing of 'Goodfellas' or applauding the understated brilliance of Ray Liotta's diverse roles, this episode is guaranteed to offer fresh perspectives on the movies we love—or love to critique. What to say about this month's episode? You get 8 minutes on Wild at Heart, 5 minutes on The People Under the Stairs, 5 minutes on Mum & Dad, 6 minutes on Natural Born Killers, 7 minutes on Sightseers... and nearly 11 minutes on something so enormously irrelevant that you won't quite believe your ears. We had to try and find a movie that would fit nicely with Valentine's Day happening this week. We went with Sightseers from 2012. It's the story of Chris and Tina who are in love and out on a road trip in their camper around the countryside of jolly old England. But Chris has a bit of a dark side. He doesn't take kindly to disrespect. And when a man who litters finds himself in Chris' crosshairs, it turns out Tina is probably ok with killing too. Who knows where this dysfunctional relationship could go? We do. Because we watched the movie. Ah-ha! Two of the most acclaimed British directors of the 2010s take centre stage in this episode, albeit with very, very different films.Christopher Nolan originally envisaged his dreamy heist movie Inception as a low budget feature. But just after he'd made Insomnia, he got 80 pages into what he felt the film should be and hit a stumbling block. Two Batman movies and The Prestige later and he finally began to crack it - and things built from there. It was a lengthy journey too to bring the dark British comedy Sightseers to the screen, a road that began when Alice Lowe and Steve Oram started working on the two lead characters in an Ealing comedy club. And - with a helping hand from Edgar Wright - their work would come to the attention of a fast-rising director by the name of Ben Wheatley...The stories of both films are told in this episode. ---Film Stories print magazines can be found at store.filmstories.co.uk---Find Simon on Twitter and Bluesky at @simonbrew, and the podcast can be found at @filmstories Hosted on Acast. What in tarnation is one time enfant terrible Ben Wheatley doing directing this!? (seriously, watch The Kill List or Sightseers). Happily, nearly everything is done better here than the lackluster first film, including a magnificent final third.

BARBENHEIMER. Endlich. Zum Beispiel FRANCES HA, DRIVE MY CAR, 28 DAYS LATER oder THE NICE GUYS. Bleibt gesund und gut drauf und immer dran denken: Life in plastic - it's fantastic.

Summertime approaches, and it's time to go on a little holiday in a caravan... with a hint of violence along the way! Not really of course - we're actually referring to the sightseers of Britain, as we're discussing Ben Wheatley's 2012 British black comedy, Sightseers! As well as getting Sophie's thoughts on the film, we also talk pretentious golfers, regional accents of the UK, and a location featured we know close to home... or rather Paul's parents... ------------------------------------------------------- Don't forget to follow us on social media in the links below, and let us know your thoughts and recommendations for the future! instagram.com/sp_filmviewers twitter.com/SP_Filmviewers letterboxd.com/SP_Filmviewers Rating and reviewing the show is a great help too! After his involvement in the reboot of the Tomb Raider movie franchise was scuppered by the Pandemic, Ben Wheatley, director of Kill List, Sightseers, A Field in England and High-Rise, announced in September 2020,that he had written and directed a horror film over the course of 15 days in August. This became In the Earth, a science fiction horror film staring Joel Fry, Reece Shearsmith, Hayley Squires, Ellora Torchia, John Hollingworth and Mark Monero. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian gave the film a score of 4/5 stars, writing that it "brings us back to Wheatley's classic world of occult loopy weirdness and cult Britmovie seediness, with a new topical dimension of pandemic paranoia". The research station is called ATU327A. This is derived from the Aarne-Thompson-Uther Index (ATU index), a catalogue of folktale types used in folklore. Index # ATU 327a is called "the children and the witch", which the story of Hansel and Gretel is classified as. The ATU listing reads: "The parents abandon their children in the wood. The gingerbread house. The boy fattened; the witch thrown into the oven. The children acquire her treasure." Sightseers come across a car that seems to have gone over a cliff into the waters below. Inside is a woman and three children. At first, it seems like a cut and dry murder-suicide, but on closer review the evidence told an even worse story.
