This episode is based on an internet slang mantra which translates to "Delusion is the Solution." Find out why healthy artists rely heavily on healthy self-delusion to self-motivate. Like Comedian, Nina Oyama, says, one must create a "self deception turducken" to persevere in a creative pursuit. I also threw in Lady Gaga, David Shrigley and even Salvador Dali who all had excellent quotes. There doesn't seem to be anything more 1984 than taking what was one of the most popular selling books of the 21st century and printing an alternative text upon its ashes. There is that wonderful moment in Orwell's masterwork that reads "Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right." Okay, David Shrigley isn't some mastermind of double-think of mind control, but he is a conceptual artist. And this was his concept: after seeing a campaign gone viral where the Oxfam charity shop in Swansea had asked people to please stop bringing their copies of Dan Brown's "The Da Vinci Code" into the shop to resell, Shrigley decided to buy every copy he could of the novel with the purpose of re-printing over it as "1984." The project is called Pulped Fiction. As we noted earlier this week, fragments of the original novels remain on the paper, with letters and sometimes whole words of Robert Langdon's adventures appearing on the pages. The typeface was carefully chosen to mirror the type used for The Da Vinci Code's first edition, while the book's cover has been repurposed from the card backing and dustjackets of more than 1,250 copies of the hardback special edition. On this episode of the Radio Juxtapoz podcast, we sit down with David to discuss Pulped Fiction, the omnipresent shadow that 1984 continues to have on our world, the irony of erasing a text to reprint atop it, the beauty of charity shops and all things happening in the Shrigley world.  The Radio Juxtapoz podcast is hosted by FIFTH WALL TV's Doug Gillen and Juxtapoz editor, Evan Pricco. The London Original Print Fair is London's longest running art fair and now in its 38th year. This year it runs at Somerset House from 30th March till the 2nd April and brings together over 40 top international print dealers, publishers and studios, spanning six centuries of printmaking. We talk to Helen Rosslyn, who's been director of the Fair since 1987.  She explains why prints are so much more than mere copies and therefore such popular and safe investments. With knowledge and enthusiasm, she walks us through this year's show, with all its exciting highlights, from works by David Shrigley and Tracey Emin to those by Royal Academicians and Old Masters like Dürer and Hogarth. One of this year's highlights is a Special Tribute Exhibition in honour of Andrew Edmunds, print dealer and famed restaurateur and a founding committee member of the fair.  Andrew sadly died last autumn but to honour him his son Milo and art historian Tom Clayton, have curated a personal collection of his 18th century prints by the artist and satirist James Gilray, including some works that have never been seen in public before as well as some impressions of his best-known prints. Tune in to know exactly how to find your way around the fair and what to look for.

Since then he has been exploring and learning about NFTs, crypto, and bitcoin. [2:56 - 5:44] Sabretooth asks Vimal what his move to NFTs means for his art. Vimal started with watercolor illustrations as a kid and moved to digital art in 2012. He started with a https://www.wacom.com/en-us/products/pen-tablets (Wacom tablet) and drawing in https://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop.html (Photoshop). When holding an exhibition, people preferred physical work though. He was split between his traditional artwork for a profit and digital for personal use. It was revolutionary for him to discover NFTs. This allowed him to make a career out of digital art and not just client work. [5:45 - 9:21] Vimal has much of his work within the Indian market. Sabretooth is inquiring if his work will go beyond Vimal's traditional client base. Vimal focuses on storytelling that comes from the area where he lives. For his NFTs, he focused on global and futuristic. He sees his pieces as reaching a global audience. While everyone may not understand the traditional intricacies of Indian culture, the Scifi movement and his execution reaches far beyond.  [9:58 - 13:54 ] Vimal's series that he is dropping on WazirX and Foundation is a narrative about the issues happening around him. Vimal grew up in Kerala, a region of India with many folk stories. It also has an inclination towards art.  Growing up he would read a Sci Fi comic distributed by the Soviet embassy and moved to Bangalore in 2005. Vimal then started to explore these two very different environments. He calls it Indo Futurism. It is a genre that even Bollywood hasn't explored.  [13:54 - 16:43 ] Sabretooth asks Vimal to explain how he is balancing his design work, gallery and NFT career, and cultivating his social media. Vimal started in 2005 with Facebook and how he started with brands reaching out to him. He believes that there is a different audience on social media than NFTs. He feels like he is starting from scratch again within the NFT space, but wants to continue to complete more of his own artwork in the future. Vimal has reduced his client base and will continue to focus on NFTs. He wants to be known for mixing indian culture with Sci Fi and connecting to a global audience.  [16:44 - 21:40] Due to India's policies towards crypto, many Indian's felt the need to use pseudonyms. Sabretooth believes that there are a lot more Indians in crypto than people realize. Sabretooth asks Vimal about his personal experience of the Indian community who are in NFTs. Vimal agrees that there are a lot of people in India in NFTs and it is becoming more popular. It is especially popular for the younger generations even though everyone is talking about cryptocurrencies. He does not believe the government will ban it because they will not be able to ban it. Vimal thinks that they will be part of the global blockchain movement.  [21:41 - 21:40] While it is a tough question for Vimal to answer, his favorite artist is a South African painter https://art21.org/artist/william-kentridge/ (William Kentridge). Vimal sees him as being ahead of his time by making small animations and selling them in traditional galleries. In India, his favorite is a contemporary artist is https://www.artsy.net/artist/sheela-gowda (Sheela Gowda). In the global artists business, he follows http://www.artnet.com/artists/david-shrigley/ (David Shrigley) and https://www.artsy.net/artist/jasper-johns (Jasper John) work.

The Art on a Postcard Summer Auction artist in question today is Michael Scoggins. In the episode Rosa and Michael talk about democratising art, elitism within the art world, connecting with your child in your creative practise and much more. Michael Scoggins is an American artist best known for his works on notebook paper which feign the attitude of a petulant adolescent doodling. Similarly to the works of David Shrigley, the artist utilizes cynicism, irony, and novice drawing. Scoggins came to this style by revisiting his own childhood sketchbooks and realizing how disarmingly truthful they were in comparison to the paintings he had been making as an adult. His alter-ego, a personality reminiscent of the Dadaist tradition, Michael S., presents the artist as an uninhibited child. Born in 1973 in Washington D.C., he received his MFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2006. Today, his works are in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, CA, and the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah, GA, among others. Scoggins lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Michael Scoggins has generously donated Lots 311 and 312 to the Art on a Postcard Summer Auction to help raise money for The Hepatitis C Trust. He is visiting faculty member on a number of culture change Master’s programmes and he says he is at his best when he isn’t quite sure of what he is doing. I first met Steve for the first time about a year ago at an event called Basecamp, in something called the Tent of Not Knowing which we discuss in this episode. Since then I’ve enjoyed following his work, including watching his very popular TEDx talk about confronting his inner critic. And we began our conversation taking about a podcast series he recently completed called Sound of Silence which is an exhibition of collected silence recorded face to face with 100 guests over a 2 year period. I really enjoyed that and was struck by what he said about: The intention of art being to create moments of doubt in the realities that we’ve come to believe The moment we start to believe something as concrete, we loose the ability to wonder I make, to work out what I’m making, once I’ve made it = learning by doing I hope you enjoyed listening too and if you want to find out more about Steve then check out the links below: Website: www.canscorpionssmoke.com Instagram: www.instagram.com/stevexoh Dracula Interview Image: https://www.instagram.com/p/CH4_3eGMSzF/ Podcast: www.soundofsilence.org.uk Gallery: www.spongleheim.com TEDx Talk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnf-Ka3ZmOM Steve's Profile Picture Credit: Steve Marshall. After a decade from first encounter, we cross paths with contemporary British artist DAVID SHRIGLEY once more, this time: digging deeper into the subtle inspirations behind his work through the vehicle of music. In this episode, SHRIGLEY points to the influence of coming of age in ‘70s and ‘80s, from his love of The Fall as true iconoclasts of the time, to appreciating the idiosyncrasies of a record sleeve as art itself.

Dominic Wilcox is a London-based designer, artist and inventor. I first came across his work in 2002 when he created The War Bowl, in which he melted down plastic toy soldiers from a particular battle and turned them into, well, a bowl. Since then he has gone onto to create a singular space in the design world, with witty creations and drawings that are a combination of David Shrigley and Heath Robinson, with a dash of Vic and Bob thrown in to boot. In Wilcox’s hands your shoes can tell you where to go, a crane comes out of a hat on top of your head and serves you breakfast, while your car is made of stained glass. Oh, and there are art exhibitions designed specifically for dogs. But this isn’t whimsy. There is logic behind everything he does and a desire to turn the normal things around us into something interesting and surprising. To make life just a little bit better. More recently, he has been turning his attention to schools, through the Little Inventors Project, which encourages children to use their creativity and come up with new ideas of their own. And this year he has published two books, Little Inventors go Green and Little Inventors in Space. In this episode he discusses the importance of creativity; how he comes up with his ideas; presenting at the United Nations; his fear of failure; and how he could have been an athletics champion. To find out more about Dominic's work: dominicwilcox.comSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/materialmatters)

Among the artists whose work they hold are Charles Gaines, Genevieve Gaignard, Joe Goode, Henry Taylor, Sadie Barnette, David Shrigley, Thinh Nguyen, and many others.

What’s Next on The Fun Agenda? 2020 begins with a cartoon question that I saw recently on an artist’s Instagram account. His name was “clownchic”. His character answered it by simply stating “Abstinence”. I laughed out loud as this character looked like he had abused every illegal substance available. After the holidays, don’t we all feel this way? Of course, but I cannot deal with another self help strategy, my own included. So, in 2020, I am focusing in literally on “Art of the Diet”. Artists who have tackled food, glorious food, food issues not so glorious, addiction issues, LIFE issues in their art and they have resonated with my own issues in some way. This month I discuss several artists. Philip Guston, Samara Golden, Dana Schutz, Wayne Theibauld, David Shrigley, Francisco de Goya. The podcast art for this month is a wall hanging/teatowel that I designed as a calendar for 2020 and that is for sale. 2020 is the Year of Anxiety for me as I turn 75 and it’s a presidential election year in the US. While drawing is at the centre of his practice, his work spans an extensive range of media including sculpture, large-scale installation, animation, painting, photography and music. These stolen safe-deposit boxes contain secrets that could bring down the nation. Crime writer Dreda Say Mitchell reviews. Hans Haacke and David Shrigley will be the next two artists to display their work on Trafalgar Square's fourth plinth. Both artists discuss developing an idea for one of London's busiest civic spaces and explain why humour is important in public art. Producer: Olivia Skinner.

With Kirsty Lang. When The Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour was broadcast on BBC One on Boxing Day in 1967, it marked what some saw at the time as their fall from grace and others saw as an audacious countercultural moment. As the BBC prepares to screen the film again, and it's released on DVD, poet Paul Farley decides whether the trip is worth a detour. Actress Anne-Marie Duff first reached a wide audience playing Fiona in the acclaimed TV drama Shameless. She discusses her latest stage performance, in the title role in Jean Racine's Berenice, and also reflects on her interest in writing, and her love of a particular long-running Radio 4 drama serial. Artist David Shrigley is about to open his second major exhibition of the year, and is also publishing his version of a self-help book. His exhibition How Are You Feeling? features drawings, paintings, sculpture, videos and live performance in his humorous deadpan style. He reveals why he wants to help us cope with "an increasingly crazy and poorly signposted world". The romantic view of the pop or rock band is that ambition and charisma matter more than technical ability on musical instruments. The Royal Northern College of Music thinks it's high time that approach received a polish, and is launching a degree in popular music performance. Course Director Andy Stott outlines why he believes a conservatoire training will help tomorrow's chart and stadium stars. Producer Ekene Akalawu.

Glasgow-based artist David Shrigley works in various media, but is best known for his slightly bizarre and humourous illustrations. David enjoys his artistic freedom, he considers himself lucky. He talks about humour, how he is perceived, his DJ-ing and taste in music. He sometimes says he’s not really good at it, but drawing does come naturally to him. 30 sheets of paper every day, he tries to put a lot of variety in his drawing. There are lots of people he admires, but he contemplates about the meaning of heroism. He ends talking about the meaning and themes of his work, and his ventures into the medium of animated film.
