Hello Monday! Looks like it'll be pretty decent this week in the Coulee Region, and as summer continues to wind down, we'll keep announcing qualifiers for the bike each & every morning. Jean's out today, so it's a "Boy's Club" with fist bumps & extra Bacon! We both recapped our weekends, with Brian going to the Brewer game on Sunday, and Shaw visiting his kids in Madison. Brewers got a nice series sweep over the Guardians this weekend, and the Packers stunk up Mile High Stadium last night. Also, NASCAR had to suspend yesterday's Firekeepers 400 until later today due to rain. Great story about some deputies in Florida who saved a woman's life after her truck crashed into a lake and became submerged with her trapped inside. In honor of "National Potato Day", we gave you some stats & info on French fries, our favorite version of the spud. Tyreek Hill said he could beat Noah Lyles in a race, and Noah sounds like he'd welcome the challenge. For this week's "Monday Morning Throwback", we served up some clips of our beloved Anh Pham, who passed away last week at age 82. During today's "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about adult lemonade stands, running your dishwasher at night, drugs washing up on shore after Hurricane Debbie, a fight at a graveyard, a man who stole a Yellowstone vehicle, stolen chicken wings, a guy who tried to trade drugs for BK, a woman who lunged at the controls of a small plane while it was landing, a hospital that lost part of a guy's skull after surgery, and a doctor in #Florida that forgot to wear his hearing aid while performing a colonoscopy. It's common for MLB players to eventually have children grow up to be professional players as well. The fun part is when those children end up playing for the same team as their father. In the history of the Rockies they have just one father/son duo in the form of Eric Young Sr. and Jr. An original Rockie in 1993, Sr. was a key player for the Rockies until he was traded in 1997, and he eventually came back to coach. The brothers reflect on his offensive prowess and iconic home opener home run at Mile High Stadium. Then they look to the career of Jr who played several years with the Rockies in a part-time role from 2009-2013. Known mostly for his quick speed, Jr. didn't have as notable a career as his dad, but hey they starred in a great commercial together! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Vikings 1st & SKOL: A Minnesota Vikings podcast

As the Minnesota Vikings stand on the precipice of their sixth consecutive win, all eyes are on the upcoming Sunday Night showdown against the Denver Broncos. The question that's on everyone's lips? Is what they're doing with quarterback Josh Dobbs sustainable? This query has been the center of many football conversations. Dobbs' performance thus far has been nothing short of extraordinary, but it's well-known in football circles that such meteoric rise stories usually don't last long. So, can he maintain this level of play? Recently, host Tyler Forness analyzed the all-22 film, hoping to shed some light on whether Dobbs can sustain his form throughout the rest of the season. The findings were enlightening, and they shed light on some of the strategies that the Vikings could employ to ensure Dobbs continues his stellar run. But the Vikings have more than just their quarterback to worry about. They're about to face off against a perplexing Broncos team. The Broncos, currently sitting at 4-5, have had an inconsistent season, with wins over the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills, but a rocky start that saw them struggle. What could this mean for the Vikings? Which challenges will the Broncos pose? These are the questions we'll be looking at as we approach the Sunday Night showdown at Mile High Stadium. Stay tuned as we take a closer look at the strategies and tactics at play in this highly anticipated match-up. 319: The 1994-95 Baseball Players' Strike - With Bob Cottrell

Good Seats Still Available

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 2, 2023 78:00

We explore the traumatic events of Major League Baseball's notorious 1994-95 players' strike - with Chico State history professor Bob Cottrell ("The Year Without a World Series: Major League Baseball and the Road to the 1994 Players' Strike"). More than 900 regular season games, the entirety of the playoffs, and, for the first time in 90 years, the sport's signature World Series - were all lost to the work stoppage, which began on August 12, 1994.   The strike ended late into the 1995 preseason, when then-US District Court judge Sonia Sotomayor granted an injunction sought by the players' association to prevent club owners from using replacement players.  The ruling forced both sides to come to an agreement, and regular-season play resumed with a delayed and truncated 144-game schedule at the end of April. (Ironically, MLB umpires decided to go on strike just as the two sides settled their dispute, so the 1995 season opened with regular players - but replacement umpires!) Among the strike's biggest victims (besides the fans!): The Montreal Expos had the best record in baseball when the strike was called in 1994. They were forced to dismantle their expensive squad in a fire sale before the 1995 season, a decision that ultimately led to the franchise's relocation within a decade. Tony Gwynn missed his best chance to achieve a .400 batting average in 1994. He was hitting .394 for the season and had maintained a .417 pace in the 25 games leading up to the suspension of play. Matt Williams had a legitimate opportunity to break Roger Maris' single-season home run record of 61 in 1994. Williams had hit 43 home runs when the strike halted the season, ending his pursuit of the record. The Colorado Rockies, in their final season at Mile High Stadium in 1994, were drawing impressive crowds, averaging 57,570 fans per game. They were on track to potentially break baseball's attendance record of 4.48 million, set by the team the previous year. Michael Jordan, known for his basketball career, was playing for the Double-A affiliate Birmingham Barons when the MLB strike began in 1994. There was speculation that he might have been given the opportunity to play for the Chicago White Sox, his major league parent team, that September if the strike had not occurred. The strike also marked the end of the "independent Commissioner" era, as the owners, hesitant to contend with an arbiter who might challenge their unwavering stances, opted to appoint one of their own, Bud Selig, as acting Commissioner.   + + + SPONSOR THANKS: Old School Shirts (promo code: GOODSEATS):  oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats   BUY/READ EARLY & OFTEN: The Year Without a World Series: Major League Baseball and the Road to the 1994 Players' Strike (2023): https://amzn.to/3rsfPXc FIND & FOLLOW: Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill Instagram (+ Threads): https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable

The Denver Broncos massive spending spree to get Sean Payton some players he wants up at Mile High Stadium. Then it's making fun of the Raiders as Josh McDaniels hates love and romance, just ask Darren Waller, and he does like Jimmy G and Jakobi Meyers. We ask who should trade for Austin Ekeler? Niners head into week 11 at 5-4 riding a 2-game win streak with wins over the Rams and Chargers (Battle for LA – won by a team from The Bay??). Was a great win (every win in NFL is a great win!) and Niners are now poised to lock it in and get on a roll for the 2nd half of the season. One week at a time yes, but getting healthier each week, finding their groove on both sides of the ball, defense is the best in all of the NFL, and lots of tools on offense to work with. The future is ours to claim!! LET'S ROLL!! Niners spent this week in Colorado at the Air Force Academy working out to adapt to the altitude of Mexico City and Estadio Azteca! This is the largest stadium in all of Mexico seating 87,522 and sits at an altitude of 7220 feet/2200 meters (Mile High Stadium in Denver sits at 5280'). Hopefully the cold weather they experienced will add to their preparation from working out this week at 6700'. No doubt altitude can be a thing so we will see how that all worked, as Cards simply stayed in Arizona. Will hope that is an advantage for us. This week we are thrilled to have with us a good friend of the family and iconic “photographer of the stars” Brian Bowen Smith. You might ask us, what does a fancy-pancy photographer who has shot pictures of almost anyone and everyone in Hollywood has to do with football, mental performance, mindset, and successfully navigating transitions? That is a good question, but the answer is actually a hell of a lot. This story found its origin way back in 2020 in the midst of COVID lockdown when Brian drove his 1958 F-150 pickup cross country to take pictures of the U.S. during the midst of COVID. The pictures are all from inside the truck and were published in his book “DRIVEBYS”. Anyway, Jan hit him up and invited him to come through Nashville and he did, and our family picture made it into the book. From there we have continued to be good friends with Brian and his family. We are also both involved in our favorite tequila (Casa Del Sol), for which Brian is the corporate artistic director. With the trip to Mexico City we though it prudent to include a story that talks about tequila. So we did and this is that story. Brian shares how he worked through photography to capture the heart and soul of not only the tequila itself, but also the people making the tequila.  It is a work of love and spirit and one we really enjoyed telling. This week with the holidays approaching let's focus on accepting who we really are, inside within our heart and soul, and to finding the courage to embrace that and life that life out fully. Dropping the masks we wear to make others happy, the rules we follow given to us by others that are not out own. This holiday season let us offer grace, love, and forgiveness, for ourselves and others. But let's do so without sacrificing who you TRULY are. Let us lead always with love, grace, and kindness. Be safe. Happy holidays. Have a great week being uniquely you!!     BruceREMINDERS: It is OK TO NOT BE OK (and to tell someone!!) - YOU ARE NOT ALONE!! It is OK TO ASK FOR HELP – that is why YOU ARE NOT ALONE!! CANCER/ILLNESS SUCKS –YOU ARE NOT ALONE! – WE ARE THINKING OF YOU!Brian Bowen SmithHolistic Life NavigationThis podcast explores how to heal stress & trauma holistically. Pro Football in the 1970s is part of the https://sportshistorynetwork.com/ (Sports History Network - The Headquarters For Your Favorite Sport's Yesteryear). EPISODE SUMMARY It was certainly a long wait, but in 1977, the wait was finally over. The Denver Broncos came into existence in the old American Football League back in 1960.  A total of 18 years later, in 1977, pro football's Rocky Mountain team finally made the playoffs. They had suffered through many losing seasons, and once in a rare while, a mediocre season. But that 1977 season was certainly glorious, as the Broncos indeed made it all the way to Super Bowl XII. But before they could go to the biggest game of the year, Denver would first have to handle the Pittsburgh Steelers at Mile High Stadium in the AFC Divisional Playoffs. It would be the very first postseason game in the team's history, and even though it is largely forgotten today, would be celebrated, because it was their initial playoff contest. Miami Dolphins Tales From The Deep Rob Konrad, the last member of the Syracuse Orange football program to don the university's legendary jersey number 44, enjoyed a standout career that positioned the fullback to be selected by the Miami Dolphins in the second round of the 1999 NFL Draft. Konrad hit the ground running, catching a touchdown pass from Dan Marino in his very first professional game, and went on to play six seasons in Miami, starting 57 games, and blocking for Ricky Williams during his dominant 2002-03 run. Since hanging up his cleats, Konrad has enjoyed a successful career in the finance industry, however a 2015 boating mishap left him fighting for his life in the Atlantic Ocean in an extraordinary act of survival that he has not spoken about publicly in years. Joining OJ and Seth in The Fish Tank, Rob discusses his hometown of Danvers, Massachusetts and its connection to the Salem witch trials (3:56) and fondly reflects upon his relationship with Syracuse's storied 44, as well as his bond with the legends, like Jim Brown, who wore the number before him (6:14). Rob looks back at his 1999 draft class for which he was one of three ball carriers selected (14:40), reveals how nervous he was starting his first NFL game on Monday Night Football at Mile High Stadium against the Denver Broncos (23:10), and shares how Ricky Williams' arrival in South Florida resulted in him becoming a better football player (27:43). Konrad goes on to explain how the diminishing role of the NFL fullback coupled with the sacrifices required by the position compelled him to take significant steps towards his post playing career (32:50), and then provides a detailed account of the 16-hour, death-defying swim for his life (41:28), before wrapping up the episode with The Fish Tank Two-Minute Drill (1:05:10).
