We've hit a milestone - and it's all thanks to you! In this special bonus episode, host Steve Roe takes you behind the scenes of BatChat: from the podcast's beginnings in 2018 to the present day. Discover how the show came to be created, what goes into producing each episode, and enjoy a previously unreleased gem from one of our most loved guests: Dr Bob Stebbings. What's Inside:
S6E64 In this episode of BatChat, we're shining a spotlight on NightWatch, a groundbreaking community science project from the Bat Conservation Trust. Launched in 2021, NightWatch is the only initiative of its kind in the UK, helping people uncover the hidden world of nighttime wildlife while breaking down barriers that prevent communities from connecting with nature.Join host Steve Roe as he chats with Siobhan Dempsey at the Restore Nature Now march, where they discuss how NightWatch is making bat surveys more accessible—particularly for people from minority ethnic backgrounds, lower-income communities, and those with disabilities. With thousands of bat echolocation calls recorded across 750+ sites, and over 2,000 people engaged so far, this project is transforming urban conservation. But to keep NightWatch running, we need your help! We must raise £14,000 by June 2025 to ensure more people can discover the wonders of bats in their neighborhoods.
Lighting controls can be as simple as the same switch you see in our logo to complex multi-building wide network-driven systems. There are many reasons to switch to more complex controls. But many have concerns or fears about installing them. To help ease those fears I spend some time with Steve Roe, Vice President of Controls at Acuity. You can also find Steve on YouTube in Roe On Controls. These short videos are designed to share ideas and concepts in lighting controls. See the link below. There have been only four sports information director's in the history of Iowa athletics, dating back to 1924. Eric Wilson was the first and spent 44 years in the main chair. Wilson was an Iowa track star as a student and qualified for the 1924 Olympic games. Wilson at one time held the world record in the 200 and 400 meters. In between he and Steve Roe were George Wine and Phil Haddy. Three of the four are in the CoSidsa Hall of fame with Roe to be inducted in June. Roe has assisted five student athletes in gaining national awards, he's promoted 16 All Americans, created the all century basketball team in 2002 and has worked over a hundred Big Ten and NCAA championship events. A camping trip in the New Forest was the first sighting of bats that broadcaster, naturalist and writer Chris Packham had. He became the president of the Bat Conservation Trust in 2006 and in this episode recorded during the 2020 lockdown, Steve Roe asks Chris what it was about the Trust that made him want to become President. Chris tells us about the time he had serotine bats flying around his house whilst watching a European cup final and reveals some of the bat encounters he's had during his career as a television presenter. In this conversation I chat to the founder of Hoopla, Steve Roe (https://www.hooplaimpro.com).Steve co-founded Hoopla in 2006 with his friend Edgar Fernando and they started running improv classes and courses.Hoopla are the founders of the UK’s 1st improv comedy club. Recommended by The Guardian, The Independent, Time Out, The Evening Standard, The Daily Telegraph and more. Prior to covid, their theatre had shows performing 7 nights a week featuring people who have trained with Hoopla. Hoopla also provide corporate training for clients including Google, Facebook, Accenture, Apple, London Business School, Comedy Central and more.We kick things off talking about Steve's new exercise regime after having covid. He explains how he co-founded Hoopla and eventually walked out of his full-time job in TV, to commit to growing it as a company. Steve warns why not to full into the trap of being the impoverished artist and we agree how temping can be a meditative process. Steve also breaks down the pros and cons of growing a company organically and not taking investment. He talks about the struggle of transitioning from being a performer to having to take a step back to run the business. Steve explains his circle decision making process, which helps him decide which projects to work on. He emphasises the importance of focussing on the audience and what’s fun or you, rather than being worried about the competition. Steve talks through how and why Hoopla opened their own improv venue. What to do when you get to the end of your 5 year plan. Why he took a management course with Open University and what the key takeaways he learned from it were. How he got better at delegating. He breaks down the 5 why’s you need to ask yourself before launching something new.Steve also describes the healthy state of the UK improv scene pre-covid and believes it is on track to compete with the US. He explains why, he does the Alexander technique, why he did hypnotherapy during covid, his annual birthday ritual, why he loves going on solo walks and loads more!If you like this episode please do rate and review the podcast on Apple.Happy listening :)Steve - @offkeysteve See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Hoopla director Steve Roe talks about using improv to respond to the offer made by the global pandemic, his pre- and post-teaching rituals, the online delights of Meisner and Household Olympics, the pathos and bathos of Ozark, and the future of improv: Is it legal? Is it safe? Is it fun?
This is the second installment of a two-part special recorded at the Natural History Museum, South Kensington, London. This time Steve Roe talks with Roberto Portela Miguez who is the senior curator in charge of mammals at the Museum.Roberto tells the tale of how he and colleagues discovered that a bat preserved in a jar of alcohol which had sat on a shelf in the collections for 30 years was actually a new species to science. He also discusses what role the vast Chiroptera collection at the Museum still has for conservation in today's world. You can read the original Natural History Museum article here: https://www.nhm.ac.uk/discover/news/2015/october/new-bat-species-found-in-museum-collection.html Make sure you're subscribed so you never miss an episode and let us know if you enjoyed the episode on social media using #BatChat:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BatConservationTrust/Twitter: https://twitter.com/_BCT_Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/batconservationtrust/For more bat news, head to our website https://www.bats.org.uk/Producer: Steve Roe @SteveRoeBatManCover Art: Rachel Hudson http://rachelhudsonillustration.com/infoSupport the show (https://www.bats.org.uk/donate)

As we walk between Angel Islington and Victoria Park we improvise a conversation that pulls at the strands of what drives Michael to make the kind of comedy he does.
