GHIT 0349: Dave Carpenter from the Three Pedal Mafia's Cheaties Car At long last, we have secured Dave Carpenter for the podcast. Dave drives in the orange Cheaties themed Cressida with the Three Pedal Mafia team. In addition, Bill drove in the Cressida at the last race in NJMP where it finished 6th overall in spite of Bill driving. With so much to talk about, we tried to limit it to the Lemons race at NJMP's Thunderbolt track, all about the Cressida, and how Dave manages the team and maintains a pretty strict budget and still routinely finishes in the top ten overall despite being out paced by a large fraction of the field. Hopefully, we will have Dave on again to talk more about his racing past and iRacing. PS Vicki is in full post race hangover/zombie mode for this episode. In addition, they we somehow able to manage a “Blazing Saddles” related theme and not be arrested, lol. 6) Various ways that Dave has been able to successfully race while maintaining a budget and having a car that performs well and reliably. 7) How to prioritize performance changes for endurance racing.
GHiT 0342: Live Race Update from the 2022 NJMP Thunderbolt Race with the 24 Hours of Lemons (We do plug in the microphone after ~5 minutes, lol) In a shortly, mostly live episode from the NJMP Thunderbolt paddock, Vicki and Jen are joined by Audra and Jess from the Shifting Points podcast to talk about day 1 of this years 24 Hours of Lemons race. The ladies were driving in our 1993 Honda Civic DX that had a tribute livery to our friends at the Everyone Racers podcast and the Three Pedal Mafia, along with Chrissy and Chris's Mom (and Dad). If you know, you know. Audio quality was a bit off as we were outside and had several friends come by to "help" with the podcast. It was a great weekend and we will have our normal wrap up episode as soon as we can. As always, the race hangover is real. GHIT 0285: Thank You Three Pedal Mafia We have four members of the Three Pedal Mafia come up to help Vicki and Bill work on the two Honda project cars for this winter. We had originally planned a full cage party work weekend but had postponed it until February or until the Covid spike recedes. What we were able to accomplish with their skills in such a short time was amazing. They came, they saw, and they fixed. Some day we hope to be able to perform at that level and repay them in some way. Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers Highlights for this episode are: 1) Details of the work plan for the invasion by the Three Pedal Mafia visit this past weekend including a surprise visit by Jim. 2) Shut up we are having fun, lol. 3) Driving skill review and training was an unexpected addition to the agenda for Miss Vicki. 4) It was so very cold (for Pennsylvania) that we had to create a micro climate heating area for Miss Chrissy's feet. 5) Why we had to replace the exhaust on the 1993 Honda Civic since we will be endurance racing the car this season. Mental led the festivities on the exhaust project while we set up several of the other projects. 6) Bill's planning failure. And yes, this bothers him greatly. 7) How the work went on the Honda Civic radiator and oil cooler installation and required fabrication. 8) While Vicki and I were distracted, the Three Pedal Mafia assaulted the rusting carcass of the Honda Fit that we are looking to race in Grid Life's Sundae Cup at Lime Rock this year. The Fit has yet to fully grow into the warm spot in Vicki's heart. 9) We try to describe the depth of the love that Mental has for rust, but may not have fully achieved a full description. 10) As always, Vicki loves to provide wonderful food and drinks as a thank you bribe to everyone who comes over and this weekends was no exception. Bill added in some of the new thermal barrier coating for increasing the heat control of header and exhaust wraps and also creating a protective layer to protect the system from abrasion and water/chemical attack. 11) Bill's engine disassembly is nearly complete for a replacement engine after being guided by Chris, Our Mr. Honda. Now if anyone knows of any good machine shops in north east Pennsylvania, please let us know via our email at GarageHeroesInTraining@gmail.com. 12) Vicki had a bit of a heel toe down shifting discussion with Chris and Chrissy to help her with her down shifting, especially at the end of the long straights. Hopefully, she will get to drive and ride with an instructor this season, hopefully with Chris. She also has some practice that she can start with ahead of that while driving on the street. 13) Obviously much more to follow in coming weeks. We need a few parts, some tools, and some machining assistance, but we will keep you posted as we learn.
The Garage Heroes In Training team has had quite a summer on the track so far and with our racing season beginning to wind down, but far from done on the track, we thought we would bring everyone up to speed with where we are with the podcast, how our driving and racing is progressing, and what our car related projects are going into the fall and winter repair and build programs. This is a quick episode, but we have so many moving balls (people and cars) it may appear random or confusing at points. However, there is a plan, and as always a spreadsheet or two. In case you missed it, our podcast format has changed recently due to popular demand. Monday is our normal podcast release day for the week. On Tuesday our Dominating with Dawson segment for the week will be released as its own stand alone episode. Wednesday may or may not have a bonus episode as needed. This could be a Way Off Our Topic episode (WOOT), a race review from the weekend, team updates, garage updates etc. We hope you enjoy the new release format. Thanks again. Special thanks to Chris and Chrissie from the Everyone Racers podcast and Three Pedal Mafia for stopping by last weekend to advise us on the 1993 Honda build and our path forward for the next few months. Vicki is looking into what she could/should do with her currently turbo'ed 1999 NB Miata. Any suggestions? We finally have the whole El Jeffe team together to discuss our all ladies piloted team. Elizabeth and Audra joined Jennifer and Vicki to talk about the race, how things went over the weekend and if/when the ladies will be returning to the track together. The results of the race were exceptional. The only issues we had that were racing related were due to the initial issue we fixed on Saturday. Considering that this was Audra's first ever wheel to wheel race and Elizabeth had only entered two prior events, we are viewing this as a great win for the team. Hear all the details, even some of the super secret ones. All in all, each of them grew as drivers and learned a ton this weekend! Still waiting for Alan's SpiderStang update but there was something shiny near his house so, ……. PS If you can't tell, Vicki was very excited to have the team back together to discuss the race. Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers Highlights from this episode include: 1) Some of the shocking differences that Audra experienced in her first wheel to wheel race. 2) Elizabeth and the team discuss some of the unforeseen benefits of having the seat adjusted for their size and not making due. 3) Audra goes over our race strategy for her first stint on Saturday, as well as getting to practice on Friday before the event started with a much lower car count on the track. 4) Elizabeth (and everyone) also found the practice helpful but really got a lot out of the (amazing) track walk with our friends at the Three Pedal Mafia. 5) Find out if we have grabbed Audra from autocross? We hope not. We love both. 6) The ladies discuss how important vision and spatial awareness is, especially as the speed increases or the traffic increases. 7) We also address how each driver is a member of the team and how each car is really also part of the team and (usually) work together on track. 8) The entire team began to see the benefits of having spotters on the track for each other, as well as the race craft. 9) Audra tries to convey the chaos of a race weekend. We have done so many events that we don't even notice anymore. 10) The team discusses several ways of managing traffic, as well as passing and being passed on a fairly crowded track. 11) How the ladies did in the paddock and garage prep by the team. We were a bit out of our normal groove with all the unintended changes to our team pre-race, but everything went really well even though we had 3-4 different issues this weekend, one was for the last 5 or so races. 12) Audra and Elizabeth also pointed out hat we missed a few opportunities to refine our tire pressures through the weekend. Added to our list. Along with a few other items we learned or noticed this race. 13) Pit Stops. We did a few, lol. Black flags, not so much. 14) Apparently, Audra is also part of the Connecticut tourism board and they were having a meeting in our paddock. Who knew? 15) It looks like Bill is going to have to find someone to drive with him (if the ladies have anything to say about it). Don't forget that you can follow Audra and her co-hosts on the Shifting Points Podcast.
We review our latest high performance driving education (HPDE) event at New Jersey Motorsports Park (NJMP) in Millville, New Jersey. We had four drivers at the event from our team. Jennifer, Vicki, and Liam were in the HPDE 2 run group for this weekend and Bill was in the HPDE 3-4 group. We each learned quite a bit a this event and we are all better drivers after. On this episode’s Dominating with Dawson, Ben goes into the acronym OSB, which is sometimes used to describe someone in a learning environment where it stands for “Other Sports Beckon”. We all firmly believe that anyone can learn how to drive at a track or an autocross event. While there are differences in everyone at the rate that they learn, or their initial skill/experience level, literally everyone can get to a very proficient level if they take an approach of learning and are willing to put in the effort to improve. We then move into the area of how different teaching approaches are better able to match with different student personalities and how the needs of the student may change as their experience and skill level progresses. Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers Highlights from this episode include: 1) Car reviews: Jennifer was in a 2019 ND.2 Mazda Miata with the stock OEM Continental tires and brakes. Liam was in his 2017 Toyota 86 TRD with Hankook RS4 tires and Raybestos ST-43 racing pads. Vicki was in her 1999 NB Miata with a Flyin’ Miata Turbo, Hankook RS4 tires and Raybestos ST-43 racing pads. Bill was in his 2004 BMW E46 M3 with yellow Pagid brake pads and Michelin Pilot SuperSport 4 tires. 2) Telemetry we used for this event: Apex Pro and Garmin Catalysts. 3) How we owe our friends Jeff and Jim from the Three Pedal Mafia for saving our weekend by letting us use their family’s RV. Let's just summarize by saying our prep for the vent did not go as planned. Situation normal. 4) Vicki’s prep to her turbo NB Miata did not go as planned before the event and at the event, but we did a few adjustments and all went well. It should be back up and running for our HPDE at Mid Ohio this coming weekend. Pro tip, do not try to adjust your harness while the car is running. 5) Vicki and Jennifer’s thoughts on being in HPDE 2 vs HPDE 1. It was Vicki’s second time in HPDE 2 and Jennifer and Liam's first time in HPDE 2. We also go into some of the differences in the HPDE’s between this event and some of the other organizations we have attended. 6) Let's talk about point by’s at every post stint debrief, lol. 7) Vicki’s impressions of driving the E46 M3 on track for the first time. 8) We go over our goals going into the event and how we did during the event and what we learned over this weekend. We also go into some of the challenges we each face as we progress and grow as drivers on the track. 9) Liam pops in for a quick summary towards the end with his thoughts on the weekend. He also had a great time at the event and finally had a chance to be on track with the Garmin Catalyst.

Craig Watkins joins us for this episode to discuss his driving history, as well as his time spent as an engineer for Flying Lizard Motorsports, among others. Craig concentrates now being an amateur racing driver and feels the pain of being a single person team. We also go into his business that started as a tool he needed to help him as a race car engineer and grew into what we know as Smart Racing Products that offers several solutions that are easy to use to set your car alignment up, even if your car is a truck or a bus. We hope to have Craig on again to go into the area more deeply in the future. We had recording issues so the episode is a mix of two parts, and you may be able to tell a difference in recording almost halfway through. We cannot express how happy we were when Craig said he would come on again to cover the first section that we could not edit well enough to use. Our Dominating with Dawson segment goes over how to get more out of an HPDE event or a track day by setting goals. It has helped our team to maximize the benefit of each event and get the most bang for the buck/minute of track time. This process will help you to improve as well. We hope you enjoy this episode! You can get your Smart Strings, Smart Camber etc. from Smart Racing products at: https://www.smartracingproducts.com/ Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers Highlights from this episode include: 1) Bill’s longest intro to date. Vicki had very little patience for it. 2) Craig covers most of his racing history, off road and on track driving, to becoming a race car engineer, to how he arrived at the present day as an amateur racing driver. 3) How professional racing is different but fundamentally the same as amateur racing. 4) What are some of the functions of a chief race car engineer and how he used several key pieces of data and the driver feedback to get the car as fast as possible. 5) Bad physics/chemistry flashbacks abound. Ideal gas law is fundamentally a relationship that says the Pressure X Volume is proportional to the Temperature. PV = nRT for those playing at home. 6) How the tires are really the critical control point to focus on to get your car to be fast and drive most easily. 7) What is the #1 most critical measurement tool to have in your racing tool belt, how to use it, and how to make sure you minimize variability by using a one individual gauge for all your measurements. 8) And then we also look to what the next few items and measurements are to further refine and improve your car’s performance and “dialing it in”. 9) A great summary of what the 24 Hours of Lemans – Lemans Classic event is and why you may want to add it as a bucket list item for you and your team. 10) Tire pressure at target. Then tire temperature uniformity across the tire surface and across the four tires +/- 30 degrees F or C?. If you aren't sure of your exact tire temperature range, around 150 degrees is a good first level estimate to where you enter your tire’s performance window. 11) What are the three primary aspects of your tire alignment, Camber, Caster, and Toe, what they represent, what order to adjust them in, which ones are more critical to performance, and rough starting points for you to begin to optimize from further. As expected, we also get into some of the ways to set up the car to measure and adjust these parameters. We also discuss the other terms that are sometimes referred to including thrust angle. 12) The two ways that tire grip is generated. And there really are only two. 13) While each of the settings are car dependent, we attempt to give some broad based approximate starting ranges that will aid you in establishing a baseline point to begin from to set up your race car. We also try to explain how each parameter, and direction of change, affects the car’s performance. 14) As with several of our prior episodes, Craig explains how the best teams are better by simply being better at the several fundamental aspects of car prep and team operation during a race. And if you sprinkle in a bit of luck, they will compete well and have a better than average chance to win. 15) Craig teases us with his excel list of adjustments and effects that came from his experience as a race engineer. Next time we see him, we are going to get a copy. We have a chance at getting at least the format of the list, without the exact content. tbd. 16) Craig also brings up the very valuable point to remember that you are the one to define how deep down the rabbit hole you want to go and that should be the primary determinant in how deeply you get into the car and its set up. 17) Bill finally gets to make a String Theory joke, but it wasn't very funny. Situation normal. But it was way better than his tuna joke. 18) We also go into the way to use Smart Strings and Smart Camber to measure and adjust your cars alignment before and even at the racetrack. PS Did anyone catch the semi-subtle Three Pedal Mafia reference in this episode? GHiT decals can be sent out to you if you let us know.
On this flashback episode, we cover our team's second ever race at Thompson with the 24 Hours of Lemons series in 2018. How did the race go? Well, it was our first ever two car race. It was the first ever race for half of our team (Alan, Jennifer, Casey, and Pete). It was our first time on track with the SpiderStang and our friends at Prompt Critical showed Liam and Cassian how to "adjust" the boost on the SpiderStang. The Capri died and is still dead to this day. We won the "I Got Screwed" award. Details of our weekend and what we learned shall be provided. PS Never show your new to racing teen age team mates how to adjust the boost. Also, on this episodes Dominating with Dawson, we go over car control and what it means when someone refers to a car "rotating". We hope you enjoy the episode! Best regards, Bill, Vicki, Jennifer, and Alan Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training podcast and team members in the GHiT Immature Endurance Racing Team Highlights from the episode include: 1) We quickly gloss over the new raspberry additions that Alan and Bill added to Vicki's garden area. 2) We cover from post-race of our first race at NJMP to the conclusion of our second race at Thompson 3) How our team grew from our first race with 4 drivers to where we had a two-car team with 8 drivers. Our preparation was not quite up to what it should have been. Especially with 4 additional drivers, two of which that had never driven a manual transmission before. 4) The advantages and disadvantages of a teen drivers on a racing team 5) How a perfectly performing a running car from our last race did not stay that way during the trip back from the track, to the great surprise of all involved. Carburetors are not our center of expertise and decided to let us know. 6) How the SpiderStang theme came to be and what we learned in doing it. It ended up looking great, but the process was not one we would recommend. Sometimes you learn what to do and sometimes you learn what not to do. We also mention how we built "Bondo", a PVC and spray foam version of a mannequin to be used as Spiderman on our car. 7) Vicki's trials and tribulations for her first time driving to a race with a race car trailer. It did not go very well. 8) How our first time trying to stay at the track went. In a word: poorly. We have come up with much better sources for renting RV's to stay at the track since then. 9) How our new drivers first time driving went. Quick checklist, panic attack at being strapped in, panic attack about going on a racetrack in the pit lane, first ever racing in the rain and heavy fog, and how to be a rolling chicane on the track. 10) Prompt Critical helped us with our cars but gave away a bit too much information to Liam and Cassian. They now knew how to adjust (read as increase to maximum) the boost of the turbocharger. After all, more is better, lol. 11) How to dial in a brake proportioning valve during testing. 12) Alan's chipmunk powered internet popped up again, a few times. Bill had no idea on how to edit this, but it seems pretty funny. 13) How we became an award-winning racing team at this event. It all started with Jennifer and her license in driver tech inspection. Well on our way to minor internet celebrity status. Still on the way to this day. 14) Things we learned at our first ever rain race and our first ever fog race, all at the same race. 15) The story of the death of the Capri and the birth of El Jeffe, The Bad Hombre. 16) We share the secret concoction to keep fog off your windshield that was shared with us by the Three Pedal Mafia. 17) Alan treats his body like a temple? And we finally found the root cause for why Alan doesn't want to work on the Capri. 18) Bill tries to avoid sleeping in the bathtub even though we won the coveted "I Got Screwed" award. 19) Finally, we go over the post-race awards and the trials and tribulations we went through to get home afterwards.
After months of badgering, we finally weakened Amanda Tully enough to where she agreed to come onto our podcast. After a disappointing 2019 where she finished 2nd, 1st, 1st, and 1st, we couldn't wait to hear what she was going to do to improve this year, LOL. Actually, it was a great pleasure to catch up with her and learn about her racing history and how she and her team came to dominate the east coast races last year. Amanda also discussed with us her recent transition to sim racing and we all shared some of our growing pains, as well as a lot of the fun we are having while home. Vicki was able to put on her Amanda t-shirt and fangirl for the entire episode. It was an unintended coincidence that she appeared in episode 111, but it fit with their results from last season. On this episode of Dominating with Dawson, Ben covers what to do if you have an incident on the track to minimize the effect on your day, and your car. We hope you enjoy the episode! Best regards, Bill, Vicki, Jennifer, and Alan Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training podcast and team members in the GHiT Immature Endurance Racing Team Highlights from the episode include: 1) How we first met Amanda and her team at our first ever race at NJMP in 2018. 2) How Vicki and Amanda bonded at NHMS in the 3PM overflowing hot tub last year. 3) How Amanda progressed from full newbie racer with HPDE experience to her current successes in Lemons. It all started with the lure of the fun $500 race car. Her experiences indicate that even we may eventually get good at this, we shall see. 4) Amanda may have helped Bill with the "what spares should we bring" discussions that we always seem to have. Since Amanda said it, Vicki may finally agree. We shall see. 5) We try to dissect the "issues" that led to her low performance of the year at Pittsburgh last year where they "only" finished in second place. But they did win the "I Got Screwed" Award. 6) How HPDE and especially her past motorcycle HPDE track days may have influenced her driving style, as well as her skill. 7) We tried getting some more info related to Amanda's latest car for Lemons. it's still super secret, but we know it is coming. Rumor has it that we may even be able to pass her team once this year. 8) Amanda and Bill try to help Vicki with her nervousness in joining the races. Both shared some of there best/poorest i-Racing performances so far. 9) We also discuss several similarities and differences we are seeing in sim racing and our more normal meat world racing. Peripheral vision, lack/different G force feedback, tire grip/physics, and various software settings seem to not be helping any of us at this point. Still having fun though. 10) Sim racing: It's the same, but it's not. 11) Vicki displays a story about why testing on Fridays should not be optional, especially if it's your first time at a track. 12) Amanda was even kind enough to go into what she would recommend to improve your performance and fun at a race. It is all fairly simple, but very important things that she has learned from others and through personal experience. 13) Brandon and Kelly both get a quick shut out. Kelly, you need to come out on track. 14) We also continue our continuing discussion on in car data and lap timing. Amanda is pretty firm in her position and her opinion isn't going to change any time soon. Pursuit of a fast lap time has hurt her team's performance in the race so many times. It is far more important to get all your laps similar and all your drivers as close as possible. 15) Our mutual friends in the Folgers car get another shout out. 16) Bill bonds with Amanda on spares and tools for the track. Vicki still seems less than enthused. 17) Amanda is not a fan of our RS4 tire use but prefers the Azenis 615's. We think it may be worth a retry at some point. Maybe she will borrow or test ours. Once we find a few more BMW 8.5" * 17" DSII rims (or DS2). 18) We need to see if there are any cars that Amanda likes besides her E36 and E92. There has to be at least one. 19) We even bond over our poor i-Racing seats. 20) We joke around about a recent i-Racing event with the Three Pedal Mafia at the expense of our great friends Jeff and Mental.
Phil Wurz, fellow racing driver and the short straw drawing team member at BimmerWorld was kind enough to join us for a discussion on his racing history and add to our Usual Suspects discussion related to racing BMW, especially E36's and E46's, including a good amount about Spec E46. Phil has been with BimmerWorld since 2007 and conducted this interview from in front of his E30 race car, one of the best backgrounds we have had during our podcast. BimmerWorld supplies a very wide variety of parts and also prepares cars for racing in two national GT4 series. During this episode we learn a bit about Phil and his driving history as well as his thoughts on racing BMW's across may types of racing and what can be done to improve performance, handling, and reliability. To follow along with Phil and the team at BimmerWorld, please like their Facebook page or email them from the website where everyone's company email is available. On Dominating with Dawson, Ben discusses all of the wide variety of types of racing apexes, and how best to think about approaching a turn and what considerations can affect the desired approach for each turn. We hope you enjoy the episode! Best regards, Bill, Vicki, Jennifer, and Alan Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training podcast and team members in the GHiT Immature Endurance Racing Team Highlights from the episode include: 1) His philosophy on replacing and upgrading as you grow and learn with your car 2) Vicki shockingly brings up the E36 rear wheel bearing removal and then won't let anyone ask any questions for a bit. Well, really, much more than a bit. 3) Alan "compliments" Bill on his skills with using the press on the rear bearing and finally admits his running away from the operation once the slide hammer came into the picture. 4) Bill impersonates the sound of the control arm breaking in the press. 5) Alan calls Bill an Axle, by mistake/mispronunciation. 6) Alan admits to adding a bit more wear and tear, since he is the mechanic. 7) Alan gets very excited over Phil's tow vehicle and that leads into the area of an upcoming flat nose school bus "ramp truck", potentially with a rear airbag suspension. 8) Our first podcast that is interrupted with the sounds of freedom. Mental likely scheduled it to mess with us. 9) We then walk through where the current sweet spot is for BMW's in terms of value, performance, and parts availability. We even compare the E36 vs the E46 which seem to be swarming the endurance racing fields. Yes, we are guilty. 10) Stunningly, and fir the first time, Alan hears that it's not necessary to drive at 10 tenths all the time. We shall see if it helps. 11) Vicki learns what a money shift is without costing us an engine. And Alan breaks out the FNG acronym in honor of the Three Pedal Mafia trip to Laguna Seca. 12) A good review of the growing Spec E46 series and other uses for these cars, as well as some of the advantages of spec classes, especially for people relatively new to racing and setting up of a race car. 13) Vicki requests a spare Spec E46 car for the team. Bill is currently searching on Autotempest. 14) Bill was bored and added some new questions to the Fast and The Furious questions 15) We are still looking for a good LSD solution for our M240i and Bill Begs for a spare E36 rear control arm, for a friend of course. 16) In the after credits B roll, Phil mentions a tool to remove the rear wheel bearing from an E36. Where was that when we needed it. Well, actually, we still need it. And Bill begs for some spare E36 rear control arms. For a friend. We hope to see Phil at the Charlotte Roval with Lucky Dog on the weekend of August 14-16.
For our 99th Episode, Chrissy Mittura from the Three Pedal Mafia and the co-host of the Everyone Racers podcast was our guest for this week. Chrissy was one of the key influences that helped us to start our team, so we thank her all the time and blame her some of the time, lol. Chrissy is not only and excellent driver that we are passed by routinely but has also helped our team immeasurably not only at the track but preparing for the track and our various HPDE events. With Chrissy finally being able to come on our podcast, we now have a complete set (four of a kind?) of the Everyone Racers podcast hosts. Now we have to work our way through the remaining Three Pedal Mafia team. You, our listeners, have been warned, lol. Chris may even learn something during this episode. On this week’s Dominating with Dawson segment we go over racing a “new to you” car, what to look for, what to look out for, and how to begin to get comfortable safely to reduce your lap times. Highlights from this episode include: * Chrissy is in a new position with being able to talk and not being interrupted * Kate’s recent dream about Chrissy * Vicki reviews a video of her driving at her first ever race at NJMP * Alan claims the title of “Cone Clearer” while driving the El Jeffe race truck, unfortunately, not a joke * Vicki gets all philosophical with Chrissy over here approach to racing in Lemons and racing in general * A full review of the Trucklet * We are the second to break some new car news and pick at the gaping wound of the Citroen paperwork one last time * We come up with a potential solution to the current podcast curse in the Lucky Dog racing series and racing on a Sunday (3 strikes and counting) * Kate is looking for Chris to help with getting Alan towards any form of clean * Kate picks Chrissy’s brain for her upcoming season (we hope) where Kate is taking over as Crew Chief at our races * The Grill Guys of 3PM get a shout out * Great tips on pit stop coordination and paddock optimization * A discussion on passing in high traffic Lemons fields and potential sad face aspects of racing * Many tips and tricks from Chrissy’s many years of racing in Lemons * Potential herding strategies and a reluctant admission of the impossibility of herding shiny squirrels and the upcoming potential sainthood for Kate * Pitt Race HPDE with NASA Great Lakes gets a full endorsement from Chrissy, as well as Bill * Chrissy calls her shot for our upcoming Thompson race in August * CMP vs Lemans, two things you never thought would be in the same sentence * What it’s like to race with and learn from your significant other, we may or may not have asked for ourselves, but it is sure to help you as well * What to do when the cars are running well and there is down time available. We almost never have that as an issue. * We discuss the merits of singing while driving with a new demo tape * Alan breaks news about our upcoming Pitt Race event during our Good, Bad and the Ugly. Everyone takes it well, well sort of. Kate takes a very, very glass half full reaction. * Alan: Domination? Chrissy: Have you seen me? Best retort ever * The Save The Tatas team and car gets several shout outs during the episode We hope you enjoyed the episode as much as we did. Best regards, Bill, Vicki, Jennifer, and Alan Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training podcast and team members in the GHiT Immature Endurance Racing Team
For this shorter episode of our podcast we thought it would be helpful and fun to go over our individual lists of the top ten things we have learned in our first two years of low budget endurance racing. We also had a few items added in from Kate as well as several thoughts from our Facebook and Instagram accounts. In addition to our top ten list, highlights include: 1) If its worth doing, it worth overdoing, again. 2) Bill’s math side is affecting his line and apex visualization and target, still 3) Jen needs to work on her subtlety 4) Vicki is confused with what racing means, but refers to it assuming she is addressing new drivers 5) We review our top choices for low cost endurance tires and brakes at this point 6) Square tires are not desirable 7) Vicki and Bill discuss tire pressure and its potential effects on traction and grip and car handling 8) Bill pretends to be Richard Dawson 9) Black flags are not atta boys or girls 10) Jen learns about blips and has homework for the morning 11) Jen’s cat makes an appearance by rubbing on the microphone and says hi 12) Alan apparently makes an appearance via Jen 13) We talk about the video Mental said not to talk about 14) Another discussion on the difference between front wheel drive and rear wheel drive cars 15) Jim makes another drop in appearance 16) Matt F, Randy B, Roger M, Jason H, and James M were kind enough to add a few items to our lists 17) Purple mist with sparkly pop rocks It seems like the only things we learned were from the Three Pedal Mafia. Hopefully, you can find a team willing to help mentor you early in your racing team’s growth to assist you. Best regards, Bill, Vicki, and Alan Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training podcast and team members in the GHiT Immature Endurance Racing Team
On this episode we started out with one show idea and quickly flexed into another when Judge Phil Greden from the 24 Hours of Lemons was able to join us after some scheduling issues. Judge Phil is also an automotive journalist and often uses the pen name of Murilee Martin and writes for a variety of venues including Autoblog, Autoweek, Jalopnik, Truth About Cars, Car and Driver, Roadkill, and the 24 Hours of Lemons. We had been hoping to have Phil on as one of our original bucket list guests and we were not disappointed and we really hope we can get him on again, soon. His stories are priceless and seemingly endless. On this week’s episode, we lose all pretenses of control with our guests from the Race Bar/Baby Shark racing team stage a coup of the podcast. Strap in for one of the most unique episodes that we have ever had with your unofficial hosts for this week James Webb and Jeff Caplan. Jennifer, Alan, Vicki and Bill were just along for the ride on this one. With that, here is the Baby Shark episode, just when you thought it was out of your head from NHMS!!! On this episode, we attempted to cover: 1) Just who is Ron Mexico and why is Ron Mexico and how is Ron Mexico and a virtual tour of VIR 2) Bill Breaks the record for horn sound effects needed in one episode to retain our Non-E rated streak 3) It takes almost 6 minutes to get to our intro, you’ll see why 4) We did not have the entire team on, but probably couldn’t handle them if we did 5) The origin of the BMW 7 series race car/bar and our introduction at the last NJMP race 6) How and why “Baby Shark” came to be and how the “livery” came to be 7) The differences in Lemons teams and Champ Car teams as well as their response to Race Bar 8) Our great new race driver Jeff Wright and his NHMS experiences 9) Deaf Power Racing team impending launch 10) Alan wants a car stereo upgrade to our cars, yet another bad idea 11) What PCCA thinks of Race Bar at their HPDE 12) Their 10-year plan 13) The GHiT goals and reasons why we are doing this 14) Several drive by guests came on as well 15) Vicki explains why we stopped on the way home from NHMS and how the Three Pedal Mafia came to our rescue, again 16) They share their issues with car growth in their stable as well 17) Ron Mexico interviews at least twenty people for unknown reasons 18) The world series even makes a surprise appearance 19) Story time from the VIR 24 hour race with Ron Mexico and trash can football 20) Team intervention and exorcism goals for 2020 21) and we ended with a very entertaining and even useful Good, Bad, and the Ugly Bill eventually admitted defeat and just went with wherever we wound up Best regards, Bill, Vicki, and Alan Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training podcast and team members in the GHiT Our Immature Endurance Racing Team
Our podcast this week focuses on our race weekend at NHMS with the 24 Hours of Lemons teams. We had a bit of a struggle getting ready, but the cars eventually cooperated and raced well, at least for a bit. In the end, we had a great time and caught up with a lot of friends and made several new ones this weekend. On this episode, Alan, Jennifer, Kate, Vicki and Bill are still recuperating from the race weekend hangover, but did manage to discuss: Vicki learns the alphabet, finally. Pre-race prep and race car struggles. We broke the first rule of racing and brought an non-prepped car to the track El Jeffe/The Bad Hombre/The Trophy Truck/Race Truck was finished literally hours before the race. The E36 BMW struggle did not complete until midday Friday afternoon when our great friend Bruce figured out a simple electrical issue that we could not find on our own We had to pick up a windshield, which was in Canada Bill learns to not joke with the border police Normal race induced issues led to a lot of on track repairs and replacement for the race truck, especially related to our steering, power steering, and steering rack. SpiderStang was almost brought into race trim since we had all hands on deck and needed two cars We rolled the dice and brought the E36 to the track and hoped we could fix it with the aide of our friends in the paddock area Friday testing went well with El Jeffe and we were able to get almost all of our new to NHMS drivers Jennifer clears all prior NHMS demons from last year Kate enjoys her first time on this track and then promptly has internet issues in mid story Jennifer is very excited and saw many benefits of the Watkins Glen HPDE we sent to two weeks ago. We may finally have solved our braking issue with the El Jeffe race truck Bill creates a new word for the dictionary Bruce saved our team having to get another engine and perform and engine swap by solving our issue and getting the engine in the E36 to fire. Bill confirms that by fire, they meant to get it running and not that it had caught on fire. Special thanks to the Thunder for Days team in their Folgers E36 BMW for all their assistance as well. Apparently, they travel with an entire parts tore worth of spare parts to each race. Thankfully. And Wisely. We owe you all. Our one time only Guitar Heroes In Training Theme for this race Vicki confuses AC/DC and Kiss somehow Mia tormented Craggier as the Plague Doctor all weekend Several other teams were theming hard this weekend including appearances by the Three Pedal Mafia’s Ambiguously Gay Duo themed new Pontiac Solstice and the entire gang that represented Baby Shark. Jennifer’s costume was very helpful in getting our cars to have no penalty laps Harley Quinn and the harlequin GTI were also a big hit, ad it was quite fast on the track. We had a run on power steering pumps for the race truck this weekend, using three total, and we also lost the steering rack/box We then run through the race for the race truck and then for the E36 race car NHMS this year was the most aggressive race we have been in and there were many incidents, especially Saturday We also had a Guest driver this weekend, Jeff Wright, who we met at our Lucky Dog race in Portland this summer. We hope he had a great time. His smiles Our wheel spacers led to tire tracking issues in the El Jeffe race truck We eventually (think) we lost the steering rack and had some steering difficulty that eventually led to the race truck parking for the last half of Sunday Jennifer gets here first black flag in the race truck Bill ran first in the E36 on Saturday and raced with several of our friends on the track for long periods of time We peaked at 5th place overall, our highest position ever. Now we need to figure out how to stay there for the whole weekend. We learn that there are two different style safety harnesses/safety belts Saturday night dinner and post-race festivities Vicki finally meets her girl crush, Amanda Tully, in full costume, in the Three Pedal Mafia’s hot tub, built for 4, but somehow managed to squeeze in 9 that evening. Hopefully, we will have her on as a future guest. The festivities went long into the night. Alan eventually gets into a on race CSI investigation that gets edited out a bit. Vicki proves that numbers are hard We end up talking all over each other during the review of Alan’s Sunday stint The Egan’s new car modifications led to a lot of fun but also a lot more gas usage We ended our day in the BMW E36 when we lost either a wheel bearing and/or a hub Team improvements for next year were abundant Radios for each team member if possible Earlier starting prep on race day morning with more people Training matrix will be developed and monitor our progress towards overall team knowledge and skill improvement for next year and the future New Pit Crew Chief election for 2010 season is very likely Spares parts for the BMW for next season On site car alignment verification capability within our team We begin planning our off season and our 2020 season, including re-theming several cars for the 2020 Thank you to all our friends, we cant wait to see you again next season!
Welcome to our latest podcast episode where we review our weekend HPDE with NASA North East at the world famous Watkins Glen International racetrack. We had a great weekend with 5 of our team showing up and two other friends from the Everyone Racers Podcast and The Three Pedal Mafia racing team, Chris and Chrissy. We summarize the prepping of the many cars we brought and the debacle it became for almost every car we brought. Cars we prepped included: BMW E36 1998 race car Roll bar prep and Passenger racing seat installation Issue: Won’t start as we were prepping to leave. Issue still TBD Roll bar padding and switch to racing seats and racing harness from OEM Issue: 4-point belts aren’t acceptable so hot swap at Watkins Glen to install two new 6-point harness sets 1999 Mazda MX-5 Turbo Miata with Flyin’ Miata Turbo Installed new roll bar Issue: did not finish roll bar installation and did not remember to reconnect the battery before giving it to Jennifer 2019 Mazda MX-5 Mostly no issue, except cleaning 2017 Toyota GT TRD Bad Lug bolts and Missing Lug bolts Waited until day before to get parts, ended up with bad hub threads and missing bolts, and doesn’t know how to click the pay button after registering for the HPDE Cue the sad trombone please 2013 Dodge Dart Did not have time to change to race seats, nor brake pads and fluid, nor tires from standard OEM 2017 BMW M240i No issues since Chris and Chrissy are always prepared, unlike us. Race Prepped Honda Civic Brad was an excellent test passenger for three different cars on the track. He reviews his first ever race laps in the Turbo NB MX-5 versus the race prepped Honda Civic vs a new Acura NSX. Vicki, Jennifer, and Bill covered our in car instructors and areas we worked on and improved over the weekend. These areas included: Track vision Racing lines in general Braking points and braking pressure and the proper application and removal of the braking pressure Turn in Points Input sequencing Several drills, including vision and non-shifting the entire lap or session Car control Learning and feeling what is correct and what isn’t with immediate feedback Late apexing vs early apexing and turn in Prep is key to racing In addition, we also reviewed our thoughts of the track and the NASA North East HPDE event in general. We also reviewed the relative performance of the Turbo 1999 NB MX-5 to the newly updated 2019 MX-5 ND.
This episode is dedicated to our friend Aaron Leinemann. He has had some unexpected bad medical news and a GoFundMe page has been started to assist. Please share whatever you can to assist Aaron and his amazing family. Link at the end. On this episode, our team reviews the 2019 24 Hours of Lemons race GP du Lac Chargoggagogg(etcetera) AT Thompson Speedway in Northeastern Connecticut. We entered our Race Truck “El Jeffe” a 2004 Chevy S-10 with many Isuzu Hombre body panels and our new to us 1998 BMW E36 3-series car for our first race with it after buying it about two weeks prior. El Jeffe was updated from the former Stan Lee livery to and Avengers Endgame livery and the E36 was quickly themed in the paddock to be a Captain America car. We review Friday practice and spend most of the episode covering the race on Saturday and Sunday. Highlights include: New Drivers, several first timers at Thompson Thompson track walk and review Saturday and Sunday within El Jeffe Saturday and Sunday in the BMW E36 El Jeffe brake issues and a potential fix and path forward to alleviate this ongoing problem. Our 4 black flag debacle and how it impacted our position in the race (HINT not well) Bill got to make two signs with Connor to slow the cars in the pits A minor incident where a car came across the bow of the El Jeffe and removed moist of the front end facia Saturday night’s Potluck Dinner hosted by the Three Pedal Mafia team for Stuntin’ and Explodin’ fest We show our exceptional math skills several times this episode Team awards for the weekend Hella Sweet or Butt Terrible idea of the week To do’s and improvements for our next race Radio and Helmet communication issues Then things devolved from there Aaron's Go Fund me link: https://www.gofundme.com/calling-all-racers-support-a-teammate-in-need?pc=tw_dn_cpgntopnavlarge_r&rcid=r01-156579899205-2044fc655aa44466&utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=tw_dn_cpgn

We end with our traditional Good, Bad, and the Ugly, as well as what did we learn from this event. Kate kept up with Black Betty for 5 laps! It would have been slightly more impressive if they weren’t yellow flag laps, lol. We all also learned how to fill a hot tub with a pickup truck Our results from NJMP were that El Jeffe/The Hombre/The Race Truck finished 60th overall out of 133 and 25th in B out of 68 cars with a fastest lap of 1:29.082. On this episode, we interrupted our Autocross month for a quick update on a recent roll cage installation weekend we attended that was hosted by the Three Pedal Mafia and focused on their new to them Nissan 300Z. We also cover other work that was done during the Cage Party. We also reviewed our progress on resuscitating the 1974 Capri and getting it back onto the track this season with a new drive train and how our progress goes towards replacing/repairing/upgrading the entire drive train from stock 1974 2.8 liter Capri engine to a more modern Chevy/Buick 3.8 liter design. Finally, we also touch on preparation for an upcoming welding course that Bill is taking.
On our latest episode, we had Chris Abbott of the Three Pedal Mafia and the Everyone Racers podcast as our special guest. Chris is one of the nicest people we have met at lemons and has probably passed us more times than any other driver in the series, sometimes even in our own car. On this episode, we talked about a wide variety of topics including: Our wish you were sponsoring us, Alpine Stars Alan does his Dalek impersonation New car race prep strategy Giraffes and racing Also as a special surprise to those of you who listen to the Everyone Racers podcast, we made special accommodations and you can actually hear Chris speaking on this episode, lol.
We are very happy to have our first guest from our friends at the Everyone Racers podcast and also a member of the Three Pedal Mafia, Christian "Mental" Ward. While our usual episode is around 45 minutes to a bit over an hour, this one went a bit longer. We actually had some audio issues so it ended up under 3 hours of a great conversation. If you listen to us on the way to work, we may have your whole week covered. So either you have our apologies or you are welcome.
In this Supery Dupery episode (40!), live from the C&C Mahem Factory, Mental has an iron butt, Jeff thinks his green shirt makes him look fat, Chrissy has arts and crafts time, and Chris isn't allowed to have another Civic. We also talk about how to pick out a race car for your own series, including how we picked out our new 300ZX. We also discuss news and notes, what we are working on, race results, smooth jazz with Mental, and hella sweet or butt terrible for Jeff's Miata.
