From Backyard Karting to Championship Wins: Alyssa Korecky's Racing Journey

Send us a textIn this episode of Late to Grid, we welcome karting champion Alyssa Korecky to the Atomic Autosports studio to share her inspiring and relatable motorsports journey. Starting out on a homemade backyard dirt track, Alyssa evolved from riding a Power Wheels to racing full-speed LO206 karts at premier tracks like Mid-Ohio, Nelson Ledges, and Pitt Race.We dive deep into Alyssa's transition from casual backyard fun to competitive karting through the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) and her first nerve-wracking race experience. From spinning out in her first practice session to ultimately winning a karting championship, her journey is one of resilience, family support, and self-confidence. This episode shines a spotlight on grassroots motorsports, especially entry-level kart racing like LO206 and how it opens the door to more advanced formats like TAG karting and shifter kart racing.Alyssa shares great advice for those looking to enter the world of karting, including the importance of respecting speed, building confidence, and learning how to navigate a competitive environment—especially as a female driver. We also explore how racing influences her work life as a professional graphic designer, where precision, performance, and consistency echo her time on the track.Whether you're exploring how to start in karting, curious about LO206 performance, or just love a good underdog racing story, this episode has something for everyone. We even touch on the broader value of high-performance driving events (HPDE) and how karting provides the perfect platform to build racecraft.Big shoutouts to the community at Nelson Ledges, Pitt Race, and all those supporting the next generation of racers through local karting leagues, endurance karting events, and track day programs. This is grassroots racing at its finest—family, fun, and fierce competition.

We recorded this a couple weeks ago in Jerami Baileys trailer in anticipation of Dewey being out for a Tail of the Dragon trip and its a fun one. We chat with Jerami Bailey about old times and trying to be competitive in Club TR with a Subaru powered car. There is a TON of good info in here for anyone looking to swap an FA24 into a 1st Gen BRZ too! Then we chat with Adam Wood, the driver of a GC in GLTC. All the torque, none of the HP, and a pile of tire! This might be one of my favorite cars I've ever driven on track. Unfortunately after recording this his weekend was ended early. WE bring him back on for an update on that and the plans for the future. 2 great chats, 1 episode, all WIN!!

Karting is where it starts for many racers so it only makes sense that we have two guests on this episode that are heavily involved in karting in the midwest.Like many in our sport, family got them involved in motorsports.  At age six Dan started going to the Indy 500 and Eric's dad had a vintage car business and was dragged to Lernerville Speedway.Dan's worked in the Motorsports industry for over 20 years first as writer, photographer and managing editor for TrackSide Online - an online content service provider working primarily in IndyCar. He also provided PR work for drivers and teams which lead me to a relationship with BeaveRun Motorsports Complex (now Pitt Race), where his kids raced karts.Eric is a fan of start-ups and has been in karting since 2010.  He's just getting his four year old daughter into a kart and his two sons have raced karts for years.  Eric enjoys being at the track and supports PKC's goal to get more involved in motorsports.Pro Kart Concepts was born out of a few opportunities.  Pitt Race's continued karting program growth, two new kart tracks being built in Ohio and an opportunity with the OTK brand.PKC will provide karts sales, set-up, tuning , trackside support, arrive and drives, and consumables.  Coaching will be part of their offering as well.  These services are needed to grow a success karting program.  The goal is to keep their customers on track and out of the garage. Although we talk about data, karting is simple.  It's all about getting on track, running laps and having fun.Dan was asked what I want to people to learn from this episode he replied,  "I'd like to let people know that getting in to karting with their family is about making memories together that can't be replicated. For a fortunate few it may result in a lifetime career but for all it's a lifetime of memories. He's baaack. Last year, Hayden Gillim returned to the MotoAmerica paddock after what was basically a two-year hiatus to race a Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson in the Mission King Of The Baggers series and he finished third in the championship. He also dipped his toe in the water at Pitt Race with a one-off Stock 1000 ride. Despite missing practice and qualifying on Friday because he was at home in Kentucky working at his day job,  Gillim put the Disrupt Racing Suzuki GSX-R1000 on the podium with his third-place finish. For 2022, Hayden will return to the MotoAmerica Series full time to compete in both the Medallia Superbike and Stock 1000 classes. Ross Bentley was kind enough to return for a third time that turned out to be his fourth appearance thanks to the mysteries of podcast recording and his recent episode on the One Lap of America event.  Jennifer, Ben, and Bill were able to go through a ton of great questions that were sent in by several of our listeners, as well as a few we had hoped to cover with Ross.  As most of you know, Ross has literally written the book, actually a series, on high performance driving and racing and continues to work with drivers and organizations to increase the skills and effectiveness of the HPDE and coaching of drivers across the world.  It is always a great idea to refer back to the Speed Secrets book series to improve your driving and find those little secrets that lead to those precious “ah hah” moments on track and lead to personal best times on track.  If we are lucky, Ross will come on again to celebrate podcast episode 250.  We actually recorded this episode prior to our victory at Pitt Race.  Hopefully this episode will help you to win your next race as well.  This may be our most helpful episode ever! On this episode’s Dominating with Dawson, Ben addresses the use of anticipation and the use of reaction on a track.  As you progress, the more that your skills improve and your experience increases, the more anticipation can be used accurately and allows the driver to react to unexpected actions or issues as they arise due to track conditions or vehicle induced occurrences, both with your own vehicle’s performance and potentially another vehicle or driver’s actions. You can subscribe to our podcast on the podcast provider of your choice, including the Apple podcast app, Google music, Amazon, and YouTube etc.  Also, if you could give our podcast a (5-star?) rating or even better, a podcast review, we would greatly appreciate it and it would help us to grow the passion and sport of high performance driving. For instance, leaving an Apple Podcast rating is very easy.  If you go to your podcast library, under shows and click on the podcast you can leave a (5?) star rating and enter your review.  A link to the episode is: https://tinyurl.com/RossBentley200 We hope you enjoy this episode! PS  Please don’t forget that if you are looking to add an Apex Pro to your driving telemetry system, don’t forget to use our discount code for all Apex Pro systems you will receive a free Windshield Suction Cup Mount for the system, a savings of $40.  Just enter the code “ghitlikesapex!” when you order.  We have two systems for our team and Bill is looking to add a third for this season, pending CFO approval from Vicki.  They are a great system and truly invaluable in safely increasing your speed on track and/or autocross etc. Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers Some of the questions Ross answered on this episode include: 1)  Jen asks Ross about her braking nemesis:  Threshold braking:  what it is, advantages and disadvantages, when to use it, and what it feels like etc.  It’s not all about just braking later despite all the talk in the paddock you may hear. 2)  Bill asks what were the biggest changes that he has learned since writing the original “Speed Secrets” book.  As expected, Ross has learned a bunch and continues to grow as a driver and a coach. 3)  Did you ever wonder what were some of Ross’s favorite drills and exercises at a track day event?  After this, you won’t ever be “bored” just lapping around a track one day.  Using these drills, you can really look to break through a plateau, even at a track you may have down cold.  The first drill Ross discussed is even useful to those top level and world class pro level drivers. 4)  Tips for what to prioritize and to include on your track maps/track notes to improve your driving at a particular track.  Bill has a weird way of taking notes as part of his preparation for going to a track, but he is always looking to improve them whole at the event.  This habit has really been proven to improve both his driving at a single track and his driving overall.  As a bonus, we also discuss when and how to include data and/or video into the track map. 5)  We look at ways that we use or could use to work towards improving and how we continue to try to improve each time we get to the track, off track, and hopefully each driving stint.  Each driver has a particular level of performance that is their individual “10” they are working towards, but we also try to look at ways to create an even higher level and make their personal “10” level even higher.  Because, these go to 11! Or at least they should. 6)  What are some of the ways to improve your sensing of the available inputs during driving, especially a drivers sense of speed and the other sensory inputs that are often overlooked while driving and may be holding you back from a higher level of performance on track. 7)  Alternatives to telemetry to get feedback while on track.  Several are available in any car that you may be driving. 8)  If you ever wondered about the differences between driving an Indy car and a well sorted GT car, Ross discussed this with us and recalled his calloused elbows, lol. 9)  The potential impact of karting on your track driving, how it helps as well as how it differs from driving a car.  The advantages and experience that can be gained greatly outweigh any deleterious habits but these are worth noting. 10)  How to transition to left foot braking and incorporate it into your track driving.  As well as if it is necessary or required. 11)  How to break through a plateau.  If you've ever been stuck and can't seem to improve, Ross goes through a few of the potential alternatives to breaking through this seemingly unbreakable limit that can be so frustrating. 12)  Ross has some great ideas for every tack around the world.  He also goes into one of the best ideas for Formula 1 that we have ever heard.  Hopefully, the world will listen to Ross’s wisdom. 13)  Jennifer goes into the areas of vision and mental imagery to assist with driving in a high performance environment.  Some of this we have not ever heard until this episode.  Cutting edge research is what you get from the Garage Heroes In Training podcast, lol. 14)  If you have ever had to deal with an ill handling car, what can you do without having to come into the pit or make an adjustment to the car. 15)  When racing at an endurance race, how to communicate the behavior of the car and what to adjust to hopefully improve the car.  We also go into how to learn what the changes will do to your car.  Bill has a copy of Ross’s free ebook on the subject, but has not read it yet.  You could get one here:  https://speedsecrets.com/tune-car-handling/ for free (for a limited time) 16)  How to best prepare for your time with a coach.  You want to work with a coach right?  This way you can maximize the value for the time that you have. 17)  Ross even begins to coach Jennifer during the episode. This may be a basis for our upcoming episode #250. 18)  How to review your own driving video.  Yep,that's here too.

Ross Bentley, world class racing coach and author, was kind enough to join us to help celebrate our 150th episode!  Since Ross has literally written THE book on racing and high performance driving, we always look forward to talking with him any chance we get.  Our team has improved in the almost year since Ross came on episode 100, but have our questions?  You will have to be the judge of that.  As always, Ross is able to answer everything we are curious about and even provide some insight into the area that we had not even thought of to this point.  If you want an episode that will help you drive faster, Ross is the perfect guest.  We have already started our new list of questions in case we can talk him into episode 200.  If you have any, please let us know.  Also, Ross has resumed his weekly podcast and if anything, it is better than ever.  You can subscribe to it on any of the podcasting platform of your choice.  Also, his book Speed Secrets is the most essential resource we know of to learn to be a better driver and race driver.  The great thing about Ross is he can answer every single question we can think of.  The bad thing about Ross is he makes you think about it in another way.  This ends up with many more questions and usually Bill goes off and overthinks it, again.  Vicki missed a really good one this time (she was fixing her broken MX5 suspension in the hotel parking lot. How to get better at the turns is the (potentially) surprising subject of this Dominating with Dawson, but we attempt to discuss how to approach a fast corner and a slow corner.  Depending in the specific track, one or two of the turns will be most critical to a fast lap time and it can often be one of these two types of corners.  This will be the first part of this area that we discuss as there is a lot of detail and discussion to be had in this area.  We did use several specific turns at Road Atlanta, Laguna Seca, Monte Carlo, and Mid-Ohio to describe these types of turns explicitly.  We are also sure, Ben slipped in a VIR reference at least once or twice.  For this discussion, the term fast is usually referring to a turn with a minimum speed of over ~60 mph or ~100 kph. We hope you enjoy this episode! Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers Highlights from this episode include: 1)  Ross quickly gives away why he is back on the podcast with us.  Lol. 2)  We talk with Ross about our (then) upcoming skid pad event at Lime Rock Park and he was kind enough to go into what we could do to maximize the learning at the skid pad.  It turned out that this was almost exactly what our friends at Safety Third Motorsports had already arranged for the event.  Even after the event, we still have a long way to go to be able to catch up to Ross’s friend Johan Schwartz who was able to hold a drift for 232.5 miles, with live refueling while drifting. 3)  Ross goes on to explain a way to have a car turn more when understeering by reducing the steering input you are asking from the car.  Its counterintuitive but exceedingly helpful.  4)  How does practicing on a skid pad help your street driving, as well as your driving on a track. 5)  When to use slow hands and when to use quick hands. 6)  Bill even asked the questions that he is over thinking, again.  Things like is there a relationship between the apex and the resumption of throttle during a turn.  Bill’s pursuit of foundational axioms continues, lol.  And why is he talking about thermodynamics on a podcast about racing? 7)  A great discussion of what sometimes can fool you on track.  For instance, sometimes as lap of a turn may have felt “good” but ended up slower. 8)  Ben comes up with a truly new question to Ross!  Nicely done. 9)  The importance of focusing on what to do and not solely on what not to do, especially in racing. 10)  Jennifer asks a great question:  what can she do to improve during the off season? 11)  Ross goes in depth on mental imagery techniques and actually gives Jennifer (and everyone) an exercise program that has shown to significantly improve your driving outside of being on track.  Summary: Relax body and slow breathing to slow your mind down 11a)  Monday night:  entering and setting up to drive the track at speed, and push pace a bit with actually mimicking the physical movements.  Focus on the technique of driving Pitt race.  Refresh the same for 10-15 minutes the following morning.  Mantra:  Pitt Race etc. 11b)  Tuesday night:  Close eyes and focus on personal driving confidence improvements and then drive the track again. Follow with a Wednesday morning refresh.  Mantra:  Confidence or I’m here etc. (in driving) 11c)  Wednesday night:  focus on ultra-sensory perception and expansion of details.  Follow up Thursday morning.  Mantra:  Sensitive 11d)  Thursday night:  Focus on race craft and starting scenarios and racing scenarios and try to envision ways to gain position.  Repeat refresh next morning.  Mantra:  I’m ready or I’m going to the front 11e)  Friday night:  Focus on adaptability of dealing with a car that isn’t quite correct.  i.e. left turns aren't same as right, you lost a gear, brakes are an issue, shock going away, etc. etc.  Mantra:  Adapt 11f)  Saturday:  Focus on a specific driving technique you are working on, like brake pedal release etc.  Mantra:  on the technique 11g)  Sunday night:  Focus on the thrill of driving at the limit and just driving without conscious thought.  Mantra:  TBD by you 12)  Ross and his students have all found the value of the using mental imagery and seen large benefits, especially when expanding the practice beyond the physical driving as we described above. 13)  We also went over several other off season, off track practice topics that anyone can do while in the off season. 14)  Bill also brought up the relatively recent release of the Garmin Catalyst, how it works, and how it can help most if not all drivers at the track.  It does not replace a coach, but can definitely help anyone to be faster and try new techniques on the track by looking at what you are doing and helping you to optimize from what you are doing to a better approach.  Most of us would be surprised by how it can help you break a plateau.  (We are still working to get a guest on the show to diver deeper into the Catalyst.  We have not given up.)  Ross coincidentally has helped in the development of the Catalyst and it really shows.  The Catalyst even helped Ross improve his personal lap times and we are sure it will help you as well. 15)  Ross covers what areas are typically key to focus on at various driving levels of proficiency.  Several of the habits are similar across the driving levels, sometimes even to the highest professional ranks. 16)  We go into the relative importance of driving at the limit vs driving the perfect line.  It looks likes Robin for NASA Great Lakes was correct with his tip to Bill at Autobahn CC this summer. 17)  A few brake light stories that Ross has “heard” about, as well as a great story about Ross driving the most “evil” car he ever drove at Nazareth. 18)  Ross was even willing to entertain us with the fast and furious story time questions that we haven’t asked him already.  Some will surprise you, but all were very entertaining.  We were especially looking forward to Ross’s answers to his favorite corner of a track.

Bill Griffin has worked his way up to through the HPDE ranks to where he is a racing driver as well as an instructor, actually Jennifer's instructor from GingerMan a few weeks back.  We talk with him about his history and progression from having zero experience in performance driving to where he competes regularly with NASA and Grid Life as well as instructing when he can.  Bill grew up liking racing as many people who grew up near Indianapolis did and eventually began driving himself when his work and family life allowed, proving again that it is never too late to start to enjoy performance driving and even racing.  He is a very relaxed and knowledgeable driver and Jennifer loved having him as an instructor.  We cover how the NASA Great Lake GingerMan HPDE classes went without being able to have in car instruction and offer several options that may be ways to improve the teaching methods without right seat instruction as an option due to COVID 19.  The event was awesome, but as with everything else, you can always improve, in everything.  You can follow him on Instagram at Bill Griffin.   On one of our simplest episodes of Dominating with Dawson we review crabbing or cheating into a corner.   We hope you enjoy the episode!   Best regards,   Bill, Vicki, Jennifer, and Alan Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training podcast and team members in the GHiT Immature Endurance Racing Team   Highlights from the episode include: 1)  We cover Bill's progressions from newbie track driver and not terribly mechanical to a regular racing driver and instructor (who has been to the track 5 weeks straight and counting) (Very jealous) 2)  What is a competition (or race) license, as well as several methods and paths towards getting one. 3)  Bill seeks guidance to how to schedule a season of racing with the rest of our team.  Perhaps an appointment for hearing testing is in order. 4)  Bill also goes into a quick review of some of the exotic sports cars he gets to drive with Extreme Experience and their clients.  This is especially useful if you are taller, like Bill who is 6' 4". 5)  Bill (the other) also goes over the potential limits in size for a driver in a Mazda Miata MX-5.  We have seen one with a cage that fits the owner that was 6' 8" and swallowed Bill up quite easily. 6)  Bill even goes over why he chooses to remain instructing the HPDE 1 group of students. 7)  We cover how the NASA Great Lake GingerMan HPDE classes went without being able to have in car instructional and offer several options that may be ways to improve the teaching methods without right seat instruction as an option due to COVID 19.  The event was awesome, but as with everything else, you can always improve, in everything. 8)  Suggestions included 1) potentially using in car radios to communicate to the students, 2) lead follow groups of only two students, 3) only using partial lead follow (allowing students to assume lead position and instructor to follow), 4) perhaps grouping the instructors and cars to match performance, 5) using better/more universally defined hand signals, 6) more use of different cones for initial track learning, 7)  perhaps adopting an unofficial "HPDE 1.5" level/group within the HPDE 1 population, 8) incorporating the use of in car video, 9) positioning instructors with notebooks around the track to view at significant turns or areas of the track to provide feedback to the classroom or debrief sessions, 10) potential pathways to getting increased options for right seat/in car instruction. 9)  The tricks and differences in being an instructor in a lead follow environment versus being in the right seat and the potential for lead follow groups to become longer groups, which can make some of the instruction into a bad game of telephone. 10)  Riding a bike vs walking the track during a track walk. 11)  Several tips for new to track or high performance drivers. 12)  Bill unprompted supports Bill with the prep required before coming to the track as well as using 2-3 max goals and a few comments for each track session, especially during an HPDE event.  Now if we could only get the Wilson sisters to agree, lol. 13)  How your first few HPDE events can feel like your brain is drinking from a fire hose and how to potentially reduce this effect (like following the ideas from #12 above) 14)  Bill F. tries to sneak in a Good, The Bad, and the Ugly segment on how Jennifer did during here HPDE event.  Bill G. is much too nice to comply, but we will keep trying. 15)  How driving in a lead follow instruction environment make lengthening your vision particularly difficult. 16)  Tips for everyone (and us) on their next HPDE event.  Ours will be at Pitt Race in late July with NASA Great Lakes. 17)  The importance of focusing on consistently hitting your track marks and letting the speed build naturally.  Because it will. 18)  How teaching and instructing has helped Bill's racing and how Racing has helped him as an instructor.  Hopefully, it will help our Bill when he gets there, lol.

Randy Bish is a relatively new lemons racer for the League of Legitimate Nigerian Businessmen racing team that is off to a spectacularly good start by making all the best bad decisions possible, including racing their 1972 Ford Pinto.  On this episode, we go over his racing experiences so far and cover the topic that no one ever thought they wanted to know:  what is the best way to race a Pinto in endurance racing.  Jennifer and Vicki particularly enjoyed this since their first car was also a 1972 Pinto.  Randy may be new to Lemons, but he seems to have found his tribe.    On Dominating with Dawson, Ben covers being on track for the first time, what to do, and what not to do.  It can be intimidating at first thought, but hopefully, this will assuage some of your potential concerns and give a brief guideline if you are going to a track for the first time and what the other drivers would like for you to do.  Short summary, stay on line, stay safe, and be predictable.  They also expect you to be off pace, so don’t worry about them or the F1 and Indy Car scouts in the grandstands.  To follow Randy and his team, you can find their team on Instagram or Facebook as the League of Legitimate Nigerian Businessmen with their official pace car of mediocrity. We hope you enjoy the episode!  The episode you never asked for. Best regards,   Bill, Vicki, Jennifer, and Alan Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training podcast and team members in the GHiT Immature Endurance Racing Team   Highlights from the episode include: 1)  Design discussion of why the flames go in reverse from the back of his Pinto.  Our more seasoned listeners likely already know. 2)  How he learned all the details of his grandfather while his grandpa was behind the while as Randy was a boy. 3)  A summary of his two races last year at Pitt Race and Gingerman with the 24 Hours of Lemons. 4)  Randy’s very novel and very lemons charity fund raising method on the 24 Hours of Lemons i-Racing events, how this horribly awesome idea came to be and how much money he was able to generate for charity at the cost of some of his liver.  Maybe someday he will remember the race, but we doubt it. 5)  We may actually have convinced Vicki to race this Thursday.  Tune in this Thursday and we shall see. 6)  Matt Ferenchak and Florida Man Donnie get a few mentions, some even complimentary, lol. 7)  Randy Bish tries out for being a spokesmen for the Michelin Ice-X tire for amateur endurance racing. 8)  How a water pump can become a spinning end mill of death. 9)  How the initial “success” at Pitt Race led to his team going all in and winning the Heroic Fix at their next race at Gingerman. 10)  We find out the Randy Bish has a car obsession with big, Detroit luxury boats, the floatier the better.  But that does not seem to explain his having owned 3 SVX’s. 11)  Their team’s experience as the unintentional role as the unofficial Yellow Flag “Pace Car” at Pitt Race. 12)  Randy actually was able to use the term provenance and Pinto in the same sentence.  Admirable. 13)  We go deeper than anyone ever thought possible into the advantages of a racing Pinto.  14)  “Tires are evil and must be punished”.  Words to live by.  And Jen’s train agrees. 15)  Bill gets an honorary place on Randy’s list of favorite drivers.  But it turns out to be kind of like winning the Heroic Fix award in Lemons. 16)  The El Jeffe makes a surprise appearance in being a desirable race car to swap into, but then again, Randy is used to driving a Pinto race car so….
