Brian Kemp’s approval. Sponsored by Rep. Jordan Ridley, HB 845 aims to enhance transparency and accountability in school district budgets. The auditor, a certified professional with five years of experience, would conduct comprehensive audits, including financial and operational reviews. The bill follows recent school board actions to address financial concerns, including audits related to the state’s floating homestead property tax exemption, which could have cost the district $50 million over three years. STORY 2: Reinhardt to Move Nursing School to Main Campus in Waleska Reinhardt University is relocating its Dr. John A. Cauble School of Nursing and Health Sciences from Jasper to its main campus in Waleska by fall 2025. The move, funded by Dr. John A. Cauble and Sally Forest, aims to foster program growth, student engagement, and academic support. Established in 2017 and accredited in 2019, the nursing school has thrived, with its latest cohort achieving a 100% NCLEX pass rate for the third consecutive year. The relocation follows enrollment shifts and space reassessments, marking a new chapter for the program while maintaining ties to Pickens County. STORY 3: Driver’s License Deadline Approaching Starting May 7, U.S. travelers will need a REAL ID or another acceptable form of identification to board domestic flights. Georgia began issuing REAL ID-compliant licenses in 2012, but those who recently moved or haven’t renewed their license should check for a gold or black star in the upper right corner of their ID. If it’s missing, schedule an appointment with the Department of Driver Services to avoid long lines as the deadline approaches. The REAL ID Act, passed in 2005, aims to enhance security and reduce identity fraud. Visit a state-approved office to apply if needed. The masked defendants, armed with a pistol, assaulted and held victims at gunpoint while searching for cash. Evidence from surveillance, geofence data, and social media linked them to the crime. Pridgen, 16 at the time, was tried as an adult due to the crime's severity. A third accomplice, David Kelley, who acted as the driver, received a 20-year sentence with five years in prison. The case highlights the lasting trauma of home invasions. STORY 5: Woodstock's Transport Solutions of America Celebrates 20 Years Transport Solutions of America (TSOA), a Woodstock-based fleet logistics company, celebrated its 20th anniversary in March. Founded in 2005 by Tim Williamson, TSOA began by transporting heavy-duty assets and has since grown into a leading provider for all vehicle classes across North America. The company also launched TSOA Fleet in Canada, headquartered in Mississauga, to support Canadian fleet operations. TSOA credits its success to dedicated employees and loyal customers. Is knowledge basic, or is it dissolvable into more basic ingredients such as justification, truth, and belief? Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: In Defense of Epistemic Empathy, published by Kevin Dorst on December 28, 2023 on LessWrong. TLDR: Why think your ideological opponents are unreasonable? Common reasons: their views are (1) absurd, or (2) refutable, or (3) baseless, or (4) conformist, or (5) irrational. None are convincing. Elizabeth is skeptical about the results of the 2020 election. Theo thinks Republicans are planning to institute a theocracy. Alan is convinced that AI will soon take over the world. You probably think some (or all) of them are unhinged. As I've argued before, we seem to be losing our epistemic empathy: our ability to both (1) be convinced that someone's opinions are wrong, and yet (2) acknowledge that they might hold those opinions for reasonable reasons. For example, since the 90s our descriptions of others as 'crazy', 'stupid' or 'fools' has skyrocketed: I think this is a mistake. Lots of my work aims to help us recover our epistemic empathy - to argue that reasonable processes can drive such disagreements, and that we have little evidence that irrationality (the philosophers' term for being "crazy", "stupid", or a "fool") explains it. The most common reaction: "Clever argument. But surely you don't believe it!" I do. Obviously people sometimes act and think irrationally. Obviously that sometimes helps explain how they end up with mistaken opinions. The question is whether we have good reason to think that this is generically the explanation for why people have such different opinions than we do. Today, I want to take a critical look at some of the arguments people give for suspending their epistemic empathy: (1) that their views are absurd; (2) that the questions have easy answers; (3) that they don't have good reasons for their beliefs; (4) that they're just conforming to their group; and (5) that they're irrational. None are convincing. Absurdity. "Sure, reasonable people can disagree on some topics. But the opinions of Elizabeth, Theo, and Alan are so absurd that only irrationality could explain it." This argument over-states the power of rationality. Spend a few years in academia, and you'll see why. Especially in philosophy, it'll become extremely salient that reasonable people often wind up with absurd views. David Lewis thought that there were talking donkeys. (Since the best metaphysical system is one in which every possible world we can imagine is the way some spatio-temporally isolated world actually is.) Timothy Williamson thinks that it's impossible for me to not have existed - even if I'd never been born, I would've been something or other. (Since the best logical system is one on which necessarily everything necessarily exists.) Peter Singer thinks that the fact that you failed to give $4,000 to the Against Malaria Fund this morning is the moral equivalent of ignoring a drowning toddler as you walked into work. (Since there turns out to be no morally significant difference between the cases.) And plenty of reasonable people (including sophisticated philosophers) think both of the following: It's monstrous to run over a bunny instead of slamming on your brakes, even if doing so would hold up traffic significantly; yet It's totally fine to eat the carcass of an animal that was tortured for its entire life (in a factory farm), instead of eating a slightly-less-exciting meal of beans and rice. David Lewis, Tim Williamson, Peter Singer, and many who believe both (1) and (2) are brilliant, careful thinkers. Rationality is no guard against absurdity. Ease. "Unlike philosophical disputes, political issues just aren't that difficult." This argument belies common sense. There are plenty of easy questions that we are not polarized over. Is brushing you teeth a good idea? Are Snickers bars healthy? What color is grass? Etc. Meanwhile, the sorts of issues that people polariz...

Building a media database takes time and frankly is very expensive, and the really tough part is that journalists keep moving. This means that even the largest of agencies can't keep an up to date media list, and certainly, for companies, it can be tough even with a dedicated media team and perhaps a shortlist of top tier media.Telum Media, founded in 2013, claims to be Asia, Australia and New Zealand’s leading media intelligence platform - their media requests, news alerts and media database drive better engagement between PR professionals and journalists.Tim Williamson, Managing Director - Asia Pacific of Telum Media, tells me about the Asian origins of the business, their community-based model, how outsourcing media database research can be so much more cost-effective and efficient than trying to manage this in-house, and ways for companies to leverage their extensive in country research teams to ensure that the right story lands in the inbox of a journalist who is likely to run the story. If you like this podcast, then subscribe to our newsletter herePlease visit our blog post on PR for business please visit our site:https://www.eastwestpr.com/blogs/Find us on Twitter @eastwestprJim James is the Founder and Managing Director of the EASTWEST Public Relations Group. Last night Celtic continued their master class of dominance in Scottish football with a 1-0 win over the country’s second best side. This is despite Celtic being without 4 of the top 5 scorers this season and fielding no recognised striker. This on top of the fact that Aberdeen had played on Friday evening and Celtic on Sunday. This gap of days would mean that the Dons players could have a day off following their victory over Dundee and still have 3 days to prepare. Celtic on the other hand would have had one day (Monday) off and trained Tuesday and more than likely no-one who played Sunday would have trained Tuesday. In effect we had zero days prep.   We saw the consequences of this prep as the game unfolded. Aberdeen did NOTHING productive across the 90 minutes. Their tactic was to stop us playing – something they did well in the first half. We had changed our shape to a back three but they had 3 men press when Gordon had the ball to minimise our ability to play out easily from the back. Superior fitness told in the end however. Despite needing to chase the game, the Dons were unable to press high in the final 20 minutes and Celtic saw out a victory.   Below is some post match audio with Dedryck Boyata, Brendan Rodgers and Derek McInnes. All have something interesting to say. Boyata comments on the challenges of motivating yourself when very far out of the first team picture. He discusses being on the treadmill at midnight to 1am. I am sure it is that will to succeed and get back that has prompted Brendan to work with him towards his first team return.   Brendan discusses the game and then makes a few light-hearted comments. One about how the team could do better – we dropped 2 points away in Inverness and the other about how Tim Williamson was asked to mark Dembele in London like Franco Baresi.   Finally we have McInnes and we learn that the Aberdeen manager wasn’t even at the game! He was sitting watching some other game on the TV where Aberdeen played well!   We have uploaded a podcast extra with audio from the Hearts and Aberdeen press conferences along with a clip from the STV Facebook Live transfer window chat.   Enjoy…

In business, as in everything else, each generation finds a way to separate itself from the past. One of the interesting current generational shifts is the use of new technology to adapt and carry forward skills developed by previous generations. This group of folks call themselves Makers. Eric Bernstein is a local proponent of the Maker movement and founder of a company called Werkly. And on this show Peter welcomes back one of the grandfathers of the New Orleans economic boom, CEO of the Idea Village, Tim Williamson. It says something about the speed of change in New Orleans that we can call Tim a grandfather. In real life Tim's a young guy with a kid barely in elementary school, but Eric Bernstein and others like him are the second wave of entrepreneurs born out of the innovative business environment fostered by The Idea Village. In the You Heard It Here First segment, Domenic Giunta pitches his DIY manufacturing revolution, IDIYA. You can hear a longer conversation with Domenic, Peter, Tim and Eric andout IDIYA here. The Idea Village was launched in New Orleans by "five guys who wanted to change the world." The more modest goal of these entrepreneurs was to revitalize the city economically—a mission that became especially important when Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005. In this audio lecture, sponsored by the Stanford Center for Social Innovation, Tim Williamson shares how his nonprofit has been helping rebuild the devastated city economically, and the progress inspired through a powerful network of talented individuals. https://ssir.org/podcasts/entry/tim_williamson_-_fostering_entrepreneurship_in_new_orleans
