CONTINUING THE RENAISSANCE Toledo's Director of Economic Development, Brandon Selhorst, wrote an editorial in the Sunday Blade last week touting Toledo momentum. He said a number of major development projects are poised to redefine Toledo landscape and continue an upward trajectory into 2024 and beyond. He listed five “major” projects including: the Glass City Riverwalk, the Toledo Social Innovation District (UpTown Neighborhood), Four Corners, Toledo Trade Center Industrial Park, Westgate North & Colony Lofts. But how do all Toledoans benefit from these projects? Why will they make a difference? Chris Nixon - Madeline's Patisserie SWEET IN SYLVANIA The former owner of Element 112 and its head chef - Chris Nixon - have big plans. And the city of Sylvania gave those plans a major jump start this week. A meeting allowed for purchase and prepping of the site at 4815 Holland-Sylvania Rd. It was the site of a former Baptist church. The city purchased it in 2015. But now - they're in the beginning stages of designing a bakery and shop with the hopes of expansion in just a short period of time. The specialty is croissants - and they have contracts with the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Delta Airlines first class, and the universities of Michigan, Michigan State, and Notre Dame. Mr. Nixon has been pursuing new croissant contracts in Las Vegas. What is the secret of their success?

Toledoans may remember superstar violinist Rachel Barton Pine's appearance with the Toledo Symphony a couple of seasons ago. Now, to mark the 25th anniversary of her pioneering album of works by Classical and Romantic composers of African descent, Cedille Records has re-released that album... with a new addition: Florence Price's Violin Concerto No. 2 with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, conducted by Jonathon Heyward. That violin concerto, composed shortly before Price's death in the early 1950's, lay undiscovered until 2009, when a treasure trove of Price works was discovered in her former house near Chicago. In this Classical Conversation, Rachel gives us the backstory on that discovery, plus all of the music on her album Violin Concertos by Black Composers Through the Centuries. A long-time proponent of the vast amount of classical music left behind by composers of color, Rachel founded the Music by Black Composers project to not only spread that music, but to inspire young Black performers to embrace it, and ultimately change the landscape of Western classical music by spreading diversity throughout the canon.

The Lake Erie Bill of Rights, or LEBOR ballot initiative didn’t get very far after it was passed by Toledo voters in 2019, thanks to the fast action of Wood County farmers Mark Drewes. Drewes filed a lawsuit to thwart the attempt to give legal rights to Lake Erie and give Toledoans authority to sue farmers on behalf of the lake. The result of Drewes’ lawsuit was a U.S. District Court judge ruling, decisively, that LEBOR was invalid. On this Our Ohio Weekly we will get a behind the scenes look at the case and what its result means for Ohio farmers. 00:00 - Leah Curtis, policy counsel for Ohio Farm Bureau and Tom Fusonie, an attorney with the law firm Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease. 23:50 - Meet educator Becky Cropper and hear how she is positively impacting young lives in southwest Ohio classrooms "To the Beat of Agriculture". 32:20 - Jack Irvin, vice president of public policy with Ohio Farm Bureau gives the details on Governor DeWine's budget proposal for 2021-2022 and what it means for agriculture. 42:20 - Maggie Good, Director of Member Engagement for American Farm Bureau, shares info about Ag Safety Awareness Week.

[INTRO: 8:30] In this episode I speak with lawyer and radical environmental activist Will Falk. In this discussion, Will examines the United States legal system, in particular environmental law, and the difficult realities communities around the US continuously face when it comes to protecting natural entities (lakes, rivers, forests, etc.) from ecologically destructive government and corporate projects. As Will elaborates in this interview, the United States legal system is not designed to effectively protect human and non-human communities from ecologically destructive projects. Instead, as Will explains, it exists primarily “to make it near impossible for the citizenry to oppose those projects” through legal means.* This assertion can be demonstrated to be true by examining numerous legal cases that have come up in the last several decades in communities around US -- perhaps most dramatically by the community of Toledo, Ohio in their efforts to end the proliferation of toxic algae blooms in Lake Erie — the region’s main source of potable water. In response to this environmental crisis, the community organized to have a “Lake Erie Bill of Rights” on the ballot in their local elections. If enacted, the legislation would effectively grant legal rights to a natural entity (Lake Erie), and would work to protect the lake and the residents of Toledo from the destructive impacts of industrial agricultural runoff (which produces toxic algae blooms as a byproduct). As Will explains in detail, this campaign, in spite of being extremely well organized, well funded, legally and ethically sound, and having gained enough votes in the election, was shut down by the very legal processes that the community of Toledo relied upon for the success their campaign. This case, unfortunately, is not unique. After expounding on the details of this case, Will explains what must actually be done to halt the pervasive and ongoing destruction of the living systems of the planet. Our government and legal system as a whole will not, and cannot, do it for us. As the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund has stated: “Each municipality is a match, and each instance of a law being overturned as violative of these legal doctrines is an opportunity for people to see how the structure actually functions. This does the necessary work of penetrating the denial, piercing the illusion of democracy, and removing the blinders that prevent a large majority of people from seeing the reality on the ground.”* Will Falk is a writer, lawyer, and environmental activist. Will graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Law School and practiced as a public defender in Kenosha, WI. He left the public defender office to pursue frontline environmental activism. The Toledo Jeep® Fest – held the second weekend in August each year – celebrates decades of Jeep’s partnership with the City of Toledo. Jeep has been touching the lives of Toledoans, people throughout the United States, and people around the world in a meaningful way for a very long time, and in August 2019 the City and its visitors will celebrate that rich history for the third time as part of Toledo Jeep Fest. The first Toledo Jeep Fest – a one-day celebration in 2016 – was an unqualified success, bringing an estimated 40,000 people to downtown Toledo, which was the most for any event since the end of World War II. Even with that high standard already established, the second Toledo Jeep Fest was indeed bigger and even better. The 2018, Toledo Jeep Fest brought in an estimated 60,000 people including Jeep enthusiasts from 27 states, Canada and Mexico. The estimated economic impact was $4.5 million. Attendees celebrated their love for Jeep vehicles and an adventurous way of life – and, doing it in the city where the Jeep was invented and where its heart beats every day: Toledo, Ohio. The Toledo Jeep Fest Steering Committee’s goal is to become the largest Jeep-related event in the United States. In 2019, we look to presenting the Jeep brand’s bright future, highlighting the new-to-market Gladiator pickup truck, and proudly showcasing Toledo as the heart of Jeep Country. We are stepping up our game and planning is now underway. The weekend of August 9-11, 2019 will be action packed, and thousands of Jeep enthusiasts from across the country are expected to take part in the Jeep parade through downtown Toledo, an All-Jeep Exhibit at the SeaGate Convention Centre, and much more.
Revitalizing Toledo and Revitalizing Your City will be hosting a fundraiser for the movement "KEEP THE JAIL DOWNTOWN" over Facebook Live. Join us on our Live Stream on January 16th from 4 to 9 PM and donate to this cause via Keep the Jail's website. The hosts and guests include Kimberly Rose Ruby Morgan, Mary Olson Dutkowski, Asmi Barua, Benjamin Todd, and many more.. WHAT IS THE ISSUE?The Lucas County government is attempting to build a $185 million jail. This jail would be the most expensive jail per square foot (nearly $700 per square foot) and per bed ($284,615), that has ever been built in America. The bidding process for this jail along with the county's overall planning process have been kept secret from the public until recently, raising suspicions of foul play by elected representatives. MORE THAN A "NOT IN MY BACKYARD" ISSUEFrom the single mother working three jobs in the hopes that her child has a bright future in Lucas County, to the local entrepreneur hoping that the Toledo market will be strong enough for their business to prosper, to even a seasoned business executive that has made large investments in the region that they hope will pay off, THIS ISSUE MATTERS! This isn't just about the construction of a jail. It's about whether or not the County will have the funds to fix the roads in the future, to invest in economic development projects, and whether or not the area will be a good place to live at in the future. WHY REVITALIZING TOLEDO & REVITALIZING YOUR CITY IS GETTING INVOLVEDOur show takes a non-partisan look at politics from an economic policy standpoint. The expense of this jail puts our community at risk of being unable to make greater economic progress in the future. As a result, we believe that supporting this issue and preventing the county from making a grave mistake is important to the future of our community. HOW YOU CAN HELPOn February 26th the issue of whether to build the jail goes on ballot. While the County has large amounts of funding from the Contractors who are supposed to build this jail, and the Unions that are going to be hired to build it, Keep the Jail Downtown relies on donations from every day Toledoans
Their issue was shot down by the Lucas County Board of Elections! They stop by to have their say!
