"On June 24, 2022, the United States Supreme Court officially issued a ruling in Thomas E. Dobbs, State Health Officer of the Mississippi Department of Health, et al. v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, refusing to strike down a Mississippi state law banning abortion after the fifteenth week of pregnancy." We discuss the Dobbs decision and its impact 1 year later. Kimi Chernoby is Counsel for Reproductive Rights and Health at the National Women's Law Center. She is a Clinical Instructor of Emergency Medicine at the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Kimi was the first graduate of the University of Florida's MD/JD program and previously served as a Health Policy Fellow for the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions. As a resident physician in Indiana, she helped pregnant minors obtain the right to consent to their own medical care including post-partum contraception. Her work focuses on increasing access to contraception at the state and federal level, specifically using clinical experience to advance policies that center the needs of patients. Robin Marty is the Director of Operations for the West Alabama Women's Center and a freelance reporter and the author of the book "Handbook for a Post-Roe America," a guide for what to do if and when Roe is overturned and states make abortion illegal, and the co-author of "The End of Roe v. Wade" Robin's work is frequently published in Time Magazine, Cosmopolitan, NBC, The Guardian, Politico and other news outlets, and she is a regular guest on MSNBC.
June 24 will mark the one-year anniversary since the U.S. Supreme Court issued its landmark ruling, taking away the constitutional right to abortion. That decision negated nearly five decades of legal precedent and pushed the abortion question to the 50 state legislatures. This week's guests explain the effect of the ruling on women and maternal health in ways that are just now starting to be fully understood. Dr. Herminia Palacio is president and CEO of the Guttmacher Institute, which seeks to expand reproductive rights and Robin Marty is director of operations at West Alabama Women's Center, which had to cease offering abortions nearly 12 months ago. They join hosts Mark Masselli and Margaret Flinter to discuss how women are still getting abortions in restricted states, why states' gestational limits for abortion are dangerous and the political challenges ahead.
This is the first episode in the "Reproductive Freedom in the Deep South" Series where we talk with representatives from reproductive justice organizations with boots on the ground in Alabama. Our special guests are Tish Gotell Faulks, Legal Director at the ACLU of Alabama; Robin Marty, the Director of Operations for the West Alabama Women's Center; and Kelsea McLain, Deputy Director of the Yellowhammer Fund. Each one of our guests talks about the impact of the overturn of Roe on their organizations, the services they provide in a post-Roe landscape, along with the health and safety concerns they are dealing with on a daily basis. Our conversation expands into the full spectrum of reproductive justice to include access to maternal health care, self-managed abortions and safe after-care centers, access to contraception, sex education, and the myriad ways abortion bans impact pregnant people—— "Reproductive justice is not just about will you or will you not remain pregnant? It is about whether or not we as a society, we as communities are nurturing the people who are critical to birthing and healthy family development." The Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision, overturning a constitutional right to abortion, has led to abortion services ending at West Alabama Women's Center, Inc., in Tuscaloosa. The clinic's director, Robin Marty, explains that the states making abortion illegal are also the ones blocking Medicaid expansion. She says their idea appears to be that “It's too expensive to give people health care but you can force them to give birth against their will.” Amanda Allen is senior counsel and director of The Lawyering Project, which is a nonprofit that uses the law to “improve abortion access and uphold the rights and dignity of people seeking and providing abortion care.” She reports that her team is devastated by the Supreme Court decision but they're “doubling down on our efforts to help providers, to help the patients they serve…there are people out there who need our help.” To stream our Station live 24/7 visit www.HealthcareNOWRadio.com or ask your Smart Device to “….Play Healthcare NOW Radio”. Moj and Marie are out getting their summer wedding fix, but don't worry, Lizz won't be blabbing solo this week. We called in some serious Roe-or-Die reinforcement to deliver the scoop on all the latest anti-abortion BS from the invasive misogynistic species trying to get all up in your junk. She's also poppin' off about the (lack of) accessible healthcare options in Alabama, and rave about ELLA, the “souped-up emergency contraception” YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT. PLUS! Think Beyoncé is the best thing the South gave us? Think again. Powerhouse interim executive director of ARC Southeast, Jalessah Jackson, and new executive director of the National Network of Abortion Funds, Oriaku Njoku, are dropping knowledge on us about abortion care in the South and why using a Reproductive Justice framework for your abortion activism is the way you build sustaining power. Unfortunately, a couple of weeks ago, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade in a devastating rollback of rights. So for the 91st episode of Private Parts Unknown, we are countering a common misconception that people who are already moms don't get abortions or aren't pro-abortion. But that's not true: According to 2019 CDC statistics, 60% of people who get abortions are already mothers. So today, host Courtney Kocak speaks with reporter, abortion activist, AND mom Robin Marty, in addition to writer, speaker, and mom activist Christine Michel Carter about why abortion access is necessary, even for people who WANT to be pregnant, how to talk to your kids about abortion, and more. Robin Marty is the author of Handbook for a Post-Racial America and the updated New Handbook for a Post-Roe America, in addition to several other books, and she's currently the director of operations for the West Alabama Women's Center. Director of operations at the West Alabama Women's Center and author of The New Handbook for a Post-Roe America, Robin Marty joins Zerlina on the show to discuss what's happening on the ground in states like Alabama where trigger laws have taken effect following last week's Dobbs decision.
“It is about 5:30 in Alabama on the first morning of there being no legal abortion when our clinic should be open. And it's probably not an exaggeration to say that this is the point where I broke,” said Robin Marty, Director of Operations at the West Alabama Women's Center. In this episode, Kelly talks with Marty, as well as Rafa Kidvai, the director the Repro Legal Defense Fund, and Ash Williams, who is an organizer and abortion doula in Asheville, North Carolina, about what happens next and what we can do about it. In this episode of The New Abnormal, Leah Litman, an assistant professor at Michigan law school, breaks down one of AOC post-Roe ideas and co-host Andy Levy tears into Nancy Pelosi and her poem. Plus, Robin Marty, director of operations for West Alabama Women's Center, tells co-host Molly Jong-Fast what she's already seeing in her state, including reports that hospitals are already refusing to treat women whose lives are in danger, and are bleeding out, because they admitted they had an abortion. It's about to become much harder to find safe abortion care in America, in a country where some states already make it almost impossible. This week, we make sense of what's happening and how we got here. Lilah speaks with Rhiannon Hamam, a Texas public defender and host of the popular show 5-4 (“a podcast about how much the Supreme Court sucks”) to make sense of Roe vs Wade, the seminal law that is expected to be overturned. A post-Roe America could become a reality soon, if Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito's draft ruling becomes the court's final decision. From the West Alabama Women's Center in Tuscaloosa, Robin Marty tells Andy how the decision would impact her patients from day one, and urges Americans with privilege to consider how far they'll go to protect the rights of others. Today, like most weekday mornings, there will be about a dozen women at various points in early pregnancy patiently waiting for their appointments at West Alabama Women's Center, where we work. Some of them will be there for an aspiration abortion. Others will be waiting to see a nurse for bloodwork and counseling and to receive large glossy booklets of fetal images that the state requires they have in their possession for at least 48 hours before terminating a pregnancy.
