Linen wrapping. Expensive resins. Sarcophagi. Preserving for eternity – or until someone raids their tomb. It's a brand-new Spooktober episode with not one but two guests: Dr. Salima Ikram is a professor of Egyptology and expert on mummification of both people and animals, and is joined by veteran guest from the Egyptology episode, professor and author Dr. Kara Cooney. The two chat about mummification techniques, how food studies lead into the pyramids, controversy over the word “mummy,” whiffing the dead, socioeconomic factors in mummification, animal mummies, lingering mysteries, field work, a house mouse, and more. Next week in Part 2 we'll dive into more ethics of collections, human sacrifice, the people who ate mummified remains, paint colors, coffin engravings and the meaning of “magic.” Visit Dr. Cooney's website and follow her on Instagram, X, YouTube, and FacebookGet Kara's latest book, Recycling for Death: Coffin Reuse in Ancient Egypt and the Theban Royal Caches, and browse her other books on Amazon or Bookshop.orgSubscribe to Kara's Substack Ancient/NowVisit Dr. Ikram's website and follow her on FacebookGet Salima's latest book, Let a Cow-Skin Be Brought: Armour, Chariots and Other Leather Remains in Tutankhamun's Tomb, and browse her other books on Amazon or Bookshop.orgDonations went to the Yellowhammer Fund and Doctors Without BordersMore episode sources and linksSmologies (short, classroom-safe) episodesOther episodes you may enjoy: Egyptology (ANCIENT EGYPT), Taphology (GRAVESITES), Desairology (MORTUARY MAKE-UP), Thanatology (DEATH & DYING), Ambystomology (AXOLOTLS … AND LIMB REGROWTH?), Melaninology (SKIN/HAIR PIGMENT), Spooktober episodes of the pastSponsors of OlogiesTranscripts and bleeped episodesBecome a patron of Ologies for as little as a buck a monthOlogiesMerch.com has hats, shirts, hoodies, totes!Follow @Ologies on Instagram and XFollow @AlieWard on Instagram and XEditing by Mercedes Maitland of Maitland Audio Productions and Jacob ChaffeeManaging Director: Susan HaleScheduling Producer: Noel DilworthTranscripts by Aveline Malek Website by Kelly R. On this week's episode of ‘The Katie Phang Show”: The Democratic National Convention saw big ratings and massive fundraising numbers with high-profile speeches from Fmr. President Obama, Fmr. First Lady Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, and other top Democrats. VP Kamala Harris delivered a rousing acceptance speech highlighting her personal background, prosecutorial record and vision for bringing America into the future. TN State Rep. Justin Jones shares his first-hand experience at the historic gathering. Plus, Michigan AG Dana Nessel joins to talk about her viral speech where she warned Republicans about rolling back LGBTQ rights. And while Democrats embrace a solidly pro-abortion rights message, pro-abortion groups are suing Alabama AG Steve Marshall who is threatening to prosecute people who aid out-of-state abortions. Exec. Dir. of the Yellowhammer Fund, Jenice Fountain, talks about the actions her group is taking against the draconian policy. All that and more on ‘The Katie Phang Show.'
Host: Noah Parrish, Gender Justice Communications DirectorGuests: Jess Braverman, Gender Justice Legal Director and Paige Suelzle, Litigation Counsel at The Lawyering Project In this episode of The Gender Justice Brief we talk with The Lawyering Project's Paige Suelzle about a recent victory for abortion funds—and for the First Amendment—in a case that is likely to have broad regional and national repercussions. When the Dobbs decision was announced on June 25, 2022, abortion became illegal in Alabama overnight. By the end of that summer, Alabama's Attorney General threatened to criminalize people who help Alabamians from leaving the state to access legal abortion—including abortion funds like The Yellowhammer Fund, based in Tuscaloosa, Alabama—which had a chilling effect on providers and funds. Represented by The Lawyering Project, the Yellowhammer Fund fought this threat in federal court, and in May 2024 received a preliminary ruling: their case can move forward, and the fund can resume assisting people while the case progresses. “The right to interstate travel is one of our most fundamental constitutional rights,” wrote U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson in his preliminary ruling. “Alabama can no more restrict people from going to, say, California to engage in what is lawful there than California can restrict people from coming to Alabama to do what is lawful here.” References from the podcast and additional resources: The Lawyering Project's timeline of the case The Yellowhammer Fund National Network of Abortion Funds Our Justice (Minnesota's abortion fund) SCOTUS Chat: Can States Ban Emergency Abortion Care? Join Dean Spade & organizers from Atlanta as they discuss how to protect our communities against recent threats to mutual aid & solidarity efforts. This event took place on August 17, 2023. In the last year, we've seen attempts to criminalize mutual aid become more common as an authoritarian tactic. The recent attacks on mutual aid organizers of the Atlanta Solidarity Fund brought into full view how charging, surveillance, and targeted criminalization are an ongoing strategy to shut down political movements and community organizing. In this session, we'll be reviewing how media, right-wing movements, and even supposed allies have often latched onto incorrect and spurious claims about non-profit finances, community organizing structures, and basic accounting practices in attempts to stop the solidarity of mutual aid. Join organizer Dean Spade, author of Mutual Aid: Building Solidarity During This Crisis (and the next), along with Kamau Franklin of Community Movement Builders, Zohra Ahmed from the University of GA School of Law, plus organizers from the National Bail Fund Network and the Yellowhammer Fund, to discuss the threats organizers are facing and how we protect each other and social justice organizing. Author Marc Tyler Nobleman also talks about his experience on a speaking tour of Georgia schools where school leaders found an issue with him saying the word “gay.” Hosted on Acast. Thursday, July 20th, 2023 Jenice Fountain is the Executive Director of the Yellowhammer Fund, a reproductive justice organization in Birmingham that serves Alabama, Mississippi, and the deep south. We discuss what the actual lived experience is in Alabama, a year after the Dobbs decision. Since the Dobbs decision, pregnancies are less safe in states where abortion is prohibited. Exceptions to protect the life of the pregnant person do not work in reality because interventions are only offered at the last possible moment. Having conversations about abortion helps destigmatize, spread the word about what to do in the event of an unwanted pregnancy, and where to find resources. Since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, advocates are pushing back to assure that people still have access to reproductive care. Last June the Supreme Court transformed the landscape of reproductive rights overnight when it overturned Roe v. Wade, leaving the power to determine the legality of abortion to individual states. For many the decision also signaled a need for a new abortion underground. For this episode of the Crosscut Talks podcast, we listen in on a conversation about this new landscape featuring Kelsea McLain, deputy director of abortion advocacy and reproductive justice organization the Yellow Hammer Fund, and Judith Arcana, a member of Chicago's pre-Roe underground abortion services organization the Jane Collective. The two women share their personal abortion stories with journalist Megan Burbank, and they discuss the history of abortion and misconceptions about reproductive rights, as well as the legal challenges facing organizations and individuals who support a the rights of individuals to make their own choices about reproduction. The current landscape of reproductive rights has become highly politicized, but these panelists offer a framing that suggests more complexity than what's been normalized. This conversation took place May 5, 2023. This is the first episode in the "Reproductive Freedom in the Deep South" Series where we talk with representatives from reproductive justice organizations with boots on the ground in Alabama. Our special guests are Tish Gotell Faulks, Legal Director at the ACLU of Alabama; Robin Marty, the Director of Operations for the West Alabama Women's Center; and Kelsea McLain, Deputy Director of the Yellowhammer Fund. Each one of our guests talks about the impact of the overturn of Roe on their organizations, the services they provide in a post-Roe landscape, along with the health and safety concerns they are dealing with on a daily basis. Our conversation expands into the full spectrum of reproductive justice to include access to maternal health care, self-managed abortions and safe after-care centers, access to contraception, sex education, and the myriad ways abortion bans impact pregnant people—— "Reproductive justice is not just about will you or will you not remain pregnant? It is about whether or not we as a society, we as communities are nurturing the people who are critical to birthing and healthy family development." Jessica often warns against reading a baby's chart, but this listener did it anyway — and what she saw induced panic! A listener struggles to deal with change, grief, and accepting the ephemeral nature of life. She and Jessica have a transformational conversation about death, life, and how to manage wanting control and not always having it. The astrology of the week ahead is a bit of a mixed bag. Some supportive transits facilitate ease, but by the week's end, the Sun will oppose Neptune, sparking anxieties. Jessica breaks down the impact of that opposition in conflux with the chaos of the first week of Mercury Retrograde.
It's another episode of How the Sausage is Made! One listener has a sudden and intense attraction to women, and another finds out what happens halfway between two Saturn returns. From COVID anxiety to a healthy fear of Saturn transits, Jessica gets into it! This week's astrology includes a breakdown of what to expect from the September 9th Mercury Retrograde and the September 10th Full Moon in Pisces. Come for the astrology; stay for the practical life advice!
Omisade Burney-Scott of The Black Girl's Guide to Surviving Menopause joins Jessica for a look at her birth chart. She gets a surprise about her rising sign, and they go deep into loving oneself while loving someone else. This week's horoscope starts and ends with oppositions, but first Jessica offers a refresher on the big-picture themes at play in the sky and how they are impacting us both personally and socially.
Jessica reads the sex life of listeners "Sugar" and "Happy Bunny" based on their composite chart (aka relationship chart). This week's horoscope includes a New Moon in Virgo on the 27th and some prickly transits to Uranus and Mars earlier in the week. But first we've got to get through the Mercury opposition to Neptune, which brings anxiety, exhaustion, and confusion. Enjoy another horoscope to help you through!

Hayden has struggled for years to get grounded, to stay present in stress, and return his energy back to his body, so he reached out to Jessica for help. In episode 66 (aired September 2019) Jessica answered a listener question about sex and love, and today she gives a follow-up reading to "Anonymous 66" about her ongoing dating patterns and how she can find what she's looking for in love. There's a lot going on in this week's horoscope! On the 11th there will be an unpredictable Full Moon in Aquarius, but before that, prepare for a tumultuous Venus opposition to Pluto and a frustrating Mars square to Saturn.

The Saturn Return happens to everybody once every 29(ish) years, and it's always a huge deal. This week a listener joins Jessica on the podcast to get clarity on her first Saturn Return, in Aquarius. The astrology of this week is tumultuous! We've got squares, we've got oppositions, we've got a New Moon in Leo, and we've got the North Node, Mars, and Uranus all meeting in Taurus. Come for the mystery, stay for the common sense life advice.
In this Christian-flavored coming-of-age story, Terri (Hilary Duff) has a voice that guarantees a highly successful life in the musical spotlight… or at least we're supposed to believe that. Trauma from a 3 Days Grace concert, ambient sax solos, and egregiously mediocre singing await! Watch the video version of this episode here! Join our Discord server here! We are continuing to support the National Network of Abortion Funds to support abortion-seekers in your state. If you're in Ohio, you can make a donation here. Jessica talks to a listener about familial pressure to have a baby. Then the reading takes a turn when the listener's late father comes through to weigh in that topic and many others. A listener wants to know why older women seem triggered by her. Jessica points her toward the projected form of the birth chart. The horoscope starts off with lingering effects of the Mercury square to Neptune and continues to feature Mercury throughout the week. Get ready for lots of Chiron activity to spark opportunities for healing.
We open today's episode with a somber nod to the reality of Roe v Wade being overturned. After a number of tangents that merit being put at the end of the episode, we return to Elayne as she descends to the palace basement to undergo the First Sister ceremony. We both think the ceremony is cool, if a bit weird in spots. Toveine Gazal has her last bitter moment in the POV spotlight as the Black Tower grows and descends towards shadow. Zack Bonnie “graduated” from Rocky Mountain Academy at age sixteen, and then attended regular high school to fill the gaps in his education. He went on to college, an acting career in New York, tournament gambling, and adventures around the world. He is now an activist for the human rights of teens confined in residential facilities. Zack makes his home near the Blue Ridge Mountains of Central Virginia, where he loves to hike. Author of the Dead, Insane, or in Jail book series, Zack takes readers into the inner workings of the facility where he lived, and the impact the school had on his hyper-stimulated young mind. Incarcerated at age fourteen at a school for troubled teens in Northern Idaho, Zack has crafted a fast-moving, plot-driven memoir, with vivid characters and telling details, where even simple English words take on sinister meanings. In this second half of their two-part conversation, Zack opens up to Rachel about his own horrific experiences in the grips of the Troubled Teen Industry, detailing his teenage years spent at Rocky Mountain Academy as well as in "wilderness therapy". Rachel provides insight into the lingering psychological effects that can occur from the "tough love" techniques commonly employed in teen residential treatment programs Before You Go: Rachel explains how rehabilitation centers whose technique of encouraging growth through suffering is counter-productive and only appears to be effective because of the visceral response displayed by its victims. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you or someone you know is seeking abortion care, go to AbortionFinder.org now to learn about your options.
