In today's episode Simone reflects on the COVID 19 pandemic and how it intersects with racism and ableism. They begin by thinking about the Olympics in relation to a lack of COVID mitigations and how we need to have conversations about COVID and racism in relation to workplace inequality. How so many things are connected; with racism, xenophobia, classism and white supremacy at the root of it all.They then consider the way that the first year of the pandemic played out in 2020, drawing on both their lived experience and the studies and data that we now have. And those racisms being seen in relation to communities of colour experiencing the highest rates of cases, deaths and hospitalisations, and nearly half of all health care workers with infections being among workers of colour, with nurses being the hardest hit.Reflecting on anti-Asian racism they look at the article "Research: How Anti-Asian Racism Has Manifested at Work in the Pandemic” by Jennifer Kim and Zhida Shang: https://hbr.org/2023/03/research-how-anti-asian-racism-has-manifested-at-work-in-the-pandemic  Then they reflect on workplaces currently within the ongoing pandemic: how this impacts disabled and at risk people, how employers and governments are failing to recognise this, how there are ways we could immediately make workplaces safer that are not being implemented. However, the current environment is providing large numbers of Suspected Racists with justification for violently confronting black people. A pair of black male FedEx employees were verbally threatened by a random White Man. The non-white delivery workers filmed the conflict and later published it online. FedEx allegedly demanded that they remove the footage. When the two refused to comply, the Tennessee business titan reportedly fired them. This again demonstrates the bounty of risks faced by so-called essential employees, who are overwhelmingly black and non-white people. Across the pond in the U.K, it reported that black health professionals reported the same fears that their White employers would not have adequate protection or safety protocols to protect them. The Context of White Supremacy hosts our Friday weekly forum on neutralizing Workplace Racism. A number of regions around the globe are beginning the process of re-opening and allowing certain businesses to operate. All areas of people activity have been disrupted, and workers in all industries are struggling to deal with daily adjustments and new safety hazards. A C.O.W.S. listeners inquired about the PayCheck Protection Program (PPP). This is a part of the U.S. responses, ostensibly to supports small businesses entrepreneurs. Significantly, black businesses around the country report being denied and ignored in attempts to get financial help. Our listener said that her employer told her that she should apply for the PPP program. They want to guarantee her hours and salary over the next few weeks of the pandemic. However, part of the program stipulates that employees may be rehired for their regular hours and salay, but they may be reassigned to alternate duties. our listener indicated that they wanted to transition her to dish-washing - a position she already declined. Gus encouraged that she read all the details about the PPP. One important rule of this program stipulates: "Employees and employers should be aware that employees who reject offers of re-employment may forfeit eligibility for continued unemployment compensation."
