Marcy Langlois is a Trauma Informed Coach who helps people transcend their pain into power, heal their trauma and their nervous system to recover for good. Marcy is also a trauma survivor, chronic illness warrior, and is over 20 years into her journey of sobriety. She now guides others to live beyond their limits through her coaching services, YouTube channel, and multiple other resources. Marcy shares how her own personal struggles began from the day she was born, facing many formidable difficulties, undergoing more than twenty surgical procedures to address her cleft lip and palate. This physical struggle only compounded the emotional burdens she endured growing up, when she was subjected to relentless teasing and bullying during her childhood, as her appearance and speech differed from her peers. She continued to struggle with her deeply entrenched beliefs of being worthless and unlovable, turning to alcohol during her middle school years to numb her pain. Unfortunately, although it temporarily numbed her pain, it accelerated a downward spiral, resulting in a decade-long struggle with alcoholism that resulted in the loss of employment, devastated relationships, and a battle with chronic illness that nearly cost Marcy her life. Until the day she saw the light and changed her life forever. Marcy shares her remarkable story of personal transformation including how dealing with the shame who shaped who she had become, how she changed the wiring of her nervous system simply by changing her thoughts, and how to eliminate predatory thoughts from her inner dialogue, and so much more! Micheal's been working on his own personal healing journey for a minimum of fifteen years."I walked into therapy for the first time when I was seven years old because someone had molested me," reflects Michael. Michael's been working at changing his life trajectory. It's taken years of being committed to changing his past experiences to better his future. Michael is now offering help to others. (All information is below regarding his website, free weekly meet-ups, and his social media links, etc.)This is probably the best advice anyone could give someone with addiction and abuse issues. Michael is sincere when he says "you've got to just make a decision whether or not you're going to walk this path. If you're tired of your life being a disaster, you're tired of all the things you're going through you're tired of feeling like a victim, and again I'm not taking anyone's victimhood away, I get it, but at some point you got to decide whether or not you're going to take control of your life. And that's the hardest thing that you're going to have to do in this life- is choose yourself.""Hurt people hurt people" Michael repeats. His mother, Donna, was not well and had suffered a life full of abuse, drugs and alcohol, so she was unable to "change the arc of her own life." She tried over and over again to get help. She was in and out of facilities. Said she was going to AA meeting just for Michael's sake and she just couldn't beat it. According to Michael, "she chose drugs and alcohol over her children and she ultimately destroyed everything that she touched."Michael never had his biological father in his life. But what he did have were abusive step fathers which of course, did not help the situation. This story that Michael shares is very personal. He mentioned that he hasn't really had many of these kinds of open conversation, specifically about his mother, so I appreciate Michael trusting me with his story. It's not an easy journey. "Michael often has to explain that "I don't think people know how hard this work is, to change the arc of your life." There are lots of scars, but there is hope. And it is possible to design your own destiny. In this episode, Dr. Natalie Lancer and Julia Vaughan Smith, Kate Brassington, and Jenny Rogers, explore the nuances of trauma-informed coaching. The panel give thought to the complexities and responsibilities involved in trauma-informed coaching, discussing the internal dynamics of trauma, its influence on coaching practices, and the importance of sensitivity to clients' experiences. The conversation covers the distinctions between coaching and therapy, ethical considerations, and the skills necessary for trauma-informed coaching, such as presence, attunement, and reflective practice. The importance of safeguarding, establishing boundaries, and self-care for coaches is also addressed. We consider: What is trauma and how can we recognise it in our coaching practice? What are the reasons why clients seek trauma-informed coaching? What are the benefits for the client of working with a trauma-informed coach? Where is the overlap between coaching and therapy in addressing trauma-related issues? How can we address trauma in coaching? What are the core qualities and skills needed to coach in a trauma-informed way? How can we train to become a more trauma-informed coach? Do self-care and supervision look different for trauma-informed coaches? How should we contract appropriately for client safety? What are the risks, safe-guards and limits of trauma-informed coaching? In what ways can coaching contribute to trauma healing? Our experts shared their approaches to working with trauma in coaching, for example, understanding clients' backstories without explicitly using the term “trauma”. Trauma can be subtly present in coaching sessions, even when clients may not explicitly seek help for trauma-related issues. Trauma-informed coaching helps clients process trauma in the present and integrate their experiences in safe ways through creating a trusting environment where they feel heard and understood. Our guests today are: Jenny Rogers is a leader in a new approach to coaching which combines insights from psychotherapy with the pragmatic emphasis on change, drawing on a career in coaching spanning three decades. She works with senior clients in the law, medicine, finance, healthcare, performing arts and media who typically face a major transition in their lives. Jenny won the Henley Business School Award for Outstanding Contribution to Coaching in 2019. She is the author of Are You Listening? and nine other books on coaching. Julia Vaughan Smith is an Accredited Master Executive Coach and Supervisor and was in private practice as a Psychotherapist, focusing on trauma processing and healing. Together with Jenny Rogers, she has co-facilitated Masterclasses and associated workshops on trauma and coaching. She is the author of a number of books including ‘Coaching and Trauma', ‘Therapist to Coach', and ‘Daughters: How to Untangle Yourself from Your Mother', exploring the impact of developmental and ancestral trauma on this relationship and how to become untangled. Kate Brassington is a Coaching Psychologist (GMBPsS) and PCC ICF-certified Trauma Informed Coach who researches applied coaching strategies. She has published her research on resilience training for people in high-risk occupations. She hosts a podcast called ‘Refreshing Leadership' which brings to life applied trauma-informed coaching for leaders in all walks of life. Today we're talking to Tian Yuming. She's a yoga teacher and trauma-informed certified life coach who immigrated to Singapore from China at an early age with her family. This immigration and the generational impact of the Chinese cultural revolution set the stage for the healing journey and expertise Yuming shares with us in this episode. The most prominent thing I noticed about Yuming when we first met is the presence she brings to her interactions. It was so comforting and interesting to experience. This was what inspired us to collaborate on today's discussion. We talk about how self discovery is healing, how to create more space by anchoring into the present moment, what it means to hold space, how to hold space, the difference between holding space as a professional versus in a dynamic relationship, when to prioritize holding space for yourself versus another person, when and how to draw boundaries, how to extend grace to yourself even if you aren't present, when it's okay to think about the past and future, and letting go and moving on. This discussion is a spiritual exploration based on a foundation of trauma and somatic training, so you're in for a treat where science meets spirituality. Yuming focuses on connecting mind, body, and spirit, and this discussion is an extension of that focus. There are many fantastic take aways from today's episode, but my absolute favorite is when Yuming says “Compassionate witnessing is where the healing takes place.” Be sure to let me know in the comments (on YouTube) what your favorite take away is too. In today's episode, we delve into the concept of "relationship spirals," where partners get trapped in unhealthy behavioral patterns. Through societal conditioning, women often feel pressured to support their partners' success, leading to self-identification based on their partner's behavior. Conversely, men may internalize beliefs that tie their worth to their ability to make their partners happy. These conflicting expectations create tension and a sense of helplessness in relationships. By becoming aware of these patterns and untangling codependent behaviors, partners can cultivate a healthier, more interdependent dynamic. Join us as we explore how to break free from relationship knots and foster a more balanced exchange of energy and support.Want more help with this? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, chronic pain—pain lasting at or beyond three months—affected over 20% of U.S. adults, or 51.6 million people, in 2021. Symptoms were severe enough to substantially restrict daily activity for 6.9% of Americans that same year. And with chronic pain comes soaring medical costs, pharmaceutical over-reliance, and addiction. Mounting multidisciplinary research suggests that most chronic pain is not of structural origin. In other words, most chronic pain can not be directly attributed to injury or physical abnormality. Neuroplastic pain results from the brain misinterpreting signals from the body as if they were dangerous. We habituate to pain, creating behaviors that either avoid pain or alleviate symptoms. Encouragingly, those undergoing a psychological treatment known as Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) are showing vast improvements in pain management without pharmaceutical or other medical interventions. One major study found that two-thirds of chronic back pain patients were pain-free or nearly pain-free after four weeks of PRT interventions. In addition, patients showed visible changes in the prefrontal brain regions associated with pain after therapy. While psychological treatments are effective in managing chronic pain, this does not imply that the pain is imaginary. My guest today, Miriam Gauci Bongiovanni, suffered needlessly until she discovered the concept of neuroplastic pain. Today, now pain-free, she works from her home in Malta as a Certified MindBody Practitioner and Trauma-Informed Coach. But beyond her skills as a wonderful teacher and educator on chronic pain, I found her story of embracing a nontraditional career fascinating. Today we dive in on everything from how our personalities and fears inform our pain cycles to living a good life. INTRODUCTION:I'm a trauma-informed coach, professional singer and keynote speaker. I help people build resilience to fear and manage mental health so they can radiate confidence in front of any audience. I'm studying psychology at Queen's University and will be publishing my first book very soon!!! I love deep connection and having great conversations that uplift, inspire and help others.Over the last two decades, I've performed in front of THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE and struggled with astonishing stage fright most of the way. I used to try and “fight” my fears, achieve perfection and never show weakness. All that did was weaken me further, induce a deep sense of loneliness from abandoning myself and turn my fear into a monster. Eventually, this way of living devoured my physical and mental health. After avidly studying psychology and trauma since 2014, what was once my fear has now become my FUEL. I founded Fearce Academy to provide the mental health, emotional intelligence, confidence and leadership skills I lacked coming up in the entertainment industry, especially around mindset and fear. I was taught that fear is a weakness, but after years of fighting fears and losing, it's clear now that fear is just an untapped source of fuel. When honed, fear can actually become our friend.INCLUDED IN THIS EPISODE (But not limited to): · God Has Not Given Us The Spirit Of Fear…No, He Did Not· Being Afraid Of What You Are In Love With· When Janey Met P!nk At Yoga!!!· Our Thoughts On Alanis Morrissette · Manufactured Artists vs. The Real Deal· Signing By Janey & De'Vannon· Narcissistic Personality Disorder vs. Borderline Personality Disorder· The Importance Of Awareness· Trauma Informed Therapy Is A Must!· Soooo Much Potential!!!
