We speak with Dr. Kim Penberthy today who joined us from the University of Virginia. Kim wears many hats. She is a professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. She is also a board certified clinical psychologist and conducts research, teaches, and provides clinical care at UVA in psychiatry and the cancer center. She also studies and researches after death communication. She lived on a farm in a house that witnessed Civil War strife, with her mother a nurse and her father a would-be farmer surgeon. Exposed to life and death on a farm, she began at an early age asking herself and her parents metaphysical questions – long before she became a clinician and research scientist. We hear about her life changing story at the beach and fascinating surgical table stories heard from her aging father. We learn about her pursuit in researching after death communications from those who lose loved ones and how this research may help develop more wholistic therapeutic approaches to grieving.   Timestamps: 00:00:00 Coming Up 00:01:21 Introduction 00:03:50 The Division of Perceptual Studies 00:07:45 Does Your "Soul" Exist After Death? 00:13:58 Asking "What is the purpose of life?" and "What happens after death?" 00:20:26 Seeing a Person that is Dead 00:26:01 Divine Interventions 00:32:11 After Death Communication 00:42:34 Living Mindfully Across the Lifespan 00:46:26 Government Funding for Near Death Experiences 00:57:12 Aftermath of NDE's and OBE's   Episodes to check out: Dr. Bruce Greyson (ep 69), Dr. Antonia Mills (ep 88) and Dr. Iya Whiteley (ep 185)   Kim, https://med.virginia.edu/perceptual-studies/dops-staff/kim-penberthy/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/j-kim-penberthy-79017824/ Book w Morgan: https://www.amazon.com/Living-Mindfully-Across-Lifespan-Intergenerational-ebook/dp/B08LXJFNST/ref=sr_1_1?crid=4A42NNAPUGA&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.3NWBIzpE1SZHjenYF1AtZg.fOCzcGTIApPhdVhuHyTPrOIvW9O8at0lMhi9-7Gch_o&dib_tag=se&keywords=kim+penberthy+Living+Mindfully+Across+the+Lifespan%3A+An+Intergenerational+Guide&qid=1740933711&sprefix=kim+penberthy+living+mindfully+across+the+lifespan+an+intergenerational+guide%2Caps%2C135&sr=8-1     For fun, story about Meat from the Sky: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kentucky_meat_shower   To give to the Behind Greatness podcast, please visit here: https://behindgreatness.org. Race Reflections AT WORK

In today's episode Simone reflects on the COVID 19 pandemic and how it intersects with racism and ableism. They begin by thinking about the Olympics in relation to a lack of COVID mitigations and how we need to have conversations about COVID and racism in relation to workplace inequality. How so many things are connected; with racism, xenophobia, classism and white supremacy at the root of it all. They then consider the way that the first year of the pandemic played out in 2020, drawing on both their lived experience and the studies and data that we now have. Thinking about who could shelter and who could not, and especially how people of colour experienced what has been described as the duel pandemic. They then look at the article "COVID and Racism Cause Nurses of Color to Face “Dual Pandemic” by Kitta MacPherson: https://www.rutgers.edu/news/covid-and-racism-cause-nurses-color-face-dual-pandemic which sites the study "Effects of Race, Workplace Racism, and COVID Worry on the Emotional Well-Being of Hospital-Based Nurses: A Dual Pandemic” from Charlotte Thomas-Hawkins, Peijia Zha, Linda Flynn & Sakura Ando: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/08964289.2021.1977605They consider the pandemic happening in the context of the murder of George Floyd making it a very specific experience for Black people, and the anti-Asian racism that was exacerbated by the way the virus was being discussed making it a very specific experience for East-Asian people. And those racisms being seen in relation to communities of colour experiencing the highest rates of cases, deaths and hospitalisations, and nearly half of all health care workers with infections being among workers of colour, with nurses being the hardest hit.Reflecting on anti-Asian racism they look at the article "Research: How Anti-Asian Racism Has Manifested at Work in the Pandemic” by Jennifer Kim and Zhida Shang: https://hbr.org/2023/03/research-how-anti-asian-racism-has-manifested-at-work-in-the-pandemic  Then they reflect on workplaces currently within the ongoing pandemic: how this impacts disabled and at risk people, how employers and governments are failing to recognise this, how there are ways we could immediately make workplaces safer that are not being implemented. They consider the way the loses we have due to this are not just from death and disability, but also from workers and students quitting their workplaces and educational establishments, and the knowledge and experience we lose when this happens. The episode ends by considering the way COVID has both harmed disabled people disproportionately and created more disabled people, and so going forward we need to include disabled people and attempt to mitigate dangers in our workplaces, and look after and support people if they do get sick.Subscribe, rate and review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Amazon Music or wherever you get your podcasts.

Playing politics or playing with fire? As the Republican Party tanks a border security deal it spent months demanding, Christiane asks former GOP lawmaker Will Hurd what his party stands for, and whether it's ready to reap what it sows in November. Hurd accuses Donald Trump of using the border crisis as a “political tool,” and agrees that his competency is in doubt after a string of low-energy rambles. He also tells Christiane that Putin is an adversary, despite what “nuts like Tucker Carlson'' say. Then, veteran democratic political strategist Simon Rosenberg reveals what the polls aren't telling you about “damaged goods'' Donald Trump - and why the GOP implosion on the border crisis is another major win for Democrats. CNN Senior International Correspondent Fred Pleitgen shows us the remarkable resilience of Ukraine's war-weary children, forced to learn in subterranean “bunker schools,” as Putin's war rages overhead. In the Amanpour Archive this week - a look at a transformative time in Iran, the homeland where Christiane grew up and then left after the 1979 islamic revolution, which took place 45 years ago this week. Then, in her Letter from London, Christiane stops in at Kim's Convenience - the award-winning comedy-drama which became a major Netflix sensation - that has just made a triumphant return to the stage. Christiane talks to the show's creator and star Ins Choi, along with cast-mates Miles Mitchell and Jennifer Kim. And finally in Ask Amanpour - why AI doesn't have to be scary. 872: There was something about the unique design and explanation of the FlightPath Golf Tee on Instagram that caught my eye, and I thought what the heck I'll give it a try. During the first round, I noticed that my drives were going much straighter than usual, but gave myself more credit than the tees. But round after round, I was hitting more fairways and my yardage also increased. It took almost a year to go through the box of 8 tees, but I was hooked and ordered another. Now almost two years in, it was time to order another box, but this time, I needed to find out more. Our guest this week is the inventor, Daniel Whalen, PhD, an environmental engineer who was challenged by his inventor father to come up with something the golf world had never witnessed before. A USGA compliant tee that reduces frictional resistance and allows you to hit straighter and farther than ever before. How To Be Yourself, Challenge The Model Minority Myth and Thrive In Corporate America with Suzanne Leung

The Homesickness Cure

Intro For centuries since the advent of corporate America, white men have consistently dominated leadership positions in the workplace across all industries. It's hard enough for a person of color to rise to a leadership position, but even more so if that person is a woman. Statistics show that women are almost half of the labor force, but only 40% of these hold leadership positions. And out of that slice, 32.3% are held by white women while 7.7% are held by women of color. Source: Catalyst.org So what are the chances that an Asian immigrant woman could take on a leadership position in a white, male-dominated industry, say, in construction or in a tech-based company? Let me tell you the answer: very slim. Because according to that same research, only 2.5% of these leadership positions are held by Asian women here in the United States. And the numbers only get smaller as we go up the corporate ladder, even for white women. But unlike the statistics and the odds presented to her, our guest this week shows us that being an Asian immigrant woman is not a hindrance for anyone to thrive in the workplace. Despite the status quo, Suzanne Leung was able to rise above a white male-dominated industry; not only in terms of holding a leadership position, but also in terms of work performance and earning the respect and camaraderie of her colleagues. This week on the podcast, Suzanne Leung talks about her immigrant journey and career trajectory as an immigrant in corporate America. She also talks about the stereotypes that she has encountered as an Asian woman and how she deals with these misconceptions in the workplace. Guest Bio Suzanne Leung is a District Manager at Autodesk, a software company based in California. She was born in Hong Kong, raised in Singapore, and currently lives in the United States. Key Takeaways Why it's okay to not fit the Asian woman stereotype [12:11] Things that get rewarded in the corporate world that are actually trauma responses (from a post by Jennifer Kim) [19:26] Giving value to your time and services [24:03] Breaking away from always trying to prove yourself as an immigrant [27:57] Finding the courage to show vulnerability in a male-dominated industry [29:37] How to handle gender stereotypes in your workplace [31:10] Redefining success for yourself [34:12] Your unique position as an immigrant [40:15] Quotes “What is truly magnetic, I found, is when authenticity is able to shine through - your realness, your vulnerability, that's what is truly magnetic to people.” (Suzanne) “Success doesn't mean that I always look or seem on top of it or always look or seem in charge. [To me] success means staying true to yourself and living out the thing that's gonna make you excited and make you the most happy.” (Anya) “[As immigrants], we think we have to suffer forever and have to be constantly proving ourselves until we burn out. And it's just not healthy. In fact, I don't think people are asking that of us. We need to set boundaries and boundaries are when people start to respect our time.” (Suzanne) Live Your Best Life! MOVIE DISCUSSION: Hey guys, just wanted to let you know this episode delves into a very difficult topic, including content that might otherwise be uncomfortable, offensive, and triggering to those listening. As such, I have marked this episode explicit in the shownotes. In this episode, Daniel and I take some time setting the groundwork for this tonally challenging film, giving you some details on the content within. It may seem a bit abrasive, but we promise we wouldn’t be covering the movie if it weren’t tame. Then, Daniel and I get into our immediate, non-spoilery thoughts regarding the films expression of anxiety, and how different characters exhibit different responses to anxiety. Following this, we chat about a small cameo that horror fans will enjoy when watching She Dies Tomorrow. Afterward, we dig into spoilers and talk about the more nuanced themes and projections of anxiety and how certain characters resolve their struggles, and how Daniel and I as Christians believe it’s important to recognize and sympathize with those who have anxiety, as well as approaching it with the confidence that, in Christ, there are eternal and practical solutions to battling anxiety. She Dies Tomorrow is Rated R for language, some sexual references, drug use and bloody images. For Episode 9 of our season on Asian American Troublemakers, we revisit Jiyoung Lee's Female Pervert -- a film that we put at the top of our Asia Pacific Arts 2015 Best Asian American Films list, when 2015 was actually a really impressive year for Asian American film with lots of stellar movies that didn't, like, get one-star reviews calling it "more creepy than quirky" and a "ponderous laugh-free zone." To fully appreciate Jiyoung Lee, one must place her in the Atlanta independent filmmaking scene, be charmed by the music of Pleasant People, be properly confused by Moral Sleaze, not be above fart jokes, think it's funny someone would Kickstart a movie called Female Pervert for $6900, and generally enjoy following strange, awkward characters trying really hard to accomplish a goal while navigating a "normal" world that can be very strange and awkward. Jennifer Kim is Phoebe, an Asian lady who scares off all the nice eager hipster white boys she's dating by being a little too aggressive with her sexual desires. You feel somewhat bad for the boys, but her desires are more random than perverse, so mostly you want to say/sing: hey man.... you knew she was trouble when she walked in. Female Pervert is available to watch for free if you have Amazon Prime. 63 minutes of glorious weirdness.

We speak with the Leo Chiang, Director of the newly released documentary film, A Village Called Versailles.   In the New Orleans neighborhood called Versailles, a tight-knit group of Vietnamese Americans overcame obstacles to rebuild after Hurricane Katrina, only to have their homes threatened by a new government-imposed toxic landfill.  This film will be featured at the SFIAAFF.  Also, members from the Burmese American Democratic Alliance join us to talk about the 10th annual Burma Human Rights Day.  Also, Jennifer Kim talks about her self published book "Waiting for Appa", which explores a Korean Woman's immigration story as she deals with the death of her father.
