In the world of peer-to-peer fundraising, endurance events present a distinct set of challenges and opportunities. These events typically entail a much longer engagement window, offering both the chance to cultivate enduring relationships with participants and the hurdle of sustaining their involvement over an extended period of time. For many participants, the commitment required—both physically and in fundraising—can be daunting, especially for first-timers. As nonprofits, it's easy to focus our communication solely on fundraising goals and our mission, but in doing so, we may overlook a crucial aspect: supporting the individual athlete in their personal journey. In this episode, P2PPF's Marcie Maxwell is joined by World Vision USA's Lyndsey Deane Ratchford. They delve into the significance of crafting a fundraiser communication journey that revolves around the needs and motivations of their runners and discuss how these overarching concepts can translate into a comprehensive multi-channel messaging strategy. In this episode, we'll also explore:- The value of creating custom messaging strategies for different demographic audiences- The power of vulnerability & empathy in peer-to-peer relationships- How to help your team prioritize participant-centric communicationMentioned LinksTeam World VisionWorld Vision USAWorld Vision InternationalStay Connected on LinkedInConnect with LyndseyConnect with MarcieConnect with the Peer-to-Peer Professional Forum (00:00) - Welcome to The P2P Soap Box (02:18) - Introducing Lindsey Deane Ratchford (10:23) - About Team World Vision (14:56) - A Focus on Messaging (35:44) - Learn More
Welcome to Episode 53 of the Eat for Endurance Podcast! I am so excited to have Mike Wardian back on the show to chat about his transcon run, which he completed this past July.I did an Athlete Nutrition Profile on Mike in April 2020, right after he won the Quarantine Backyard Ultra with 262 miles in 63 hours. If you would like to learn more about Mike's nutrition story as a plant-based athlete (he eats eggs and honey, but otherwise follows a vegan diet), check out Episode 26. Mike always is a joy to talk to, so full of passion and positivity, and of course he is an unbelievable athlete too. He wears so many hats it's hard to keep track of it all - he is a professional runner, mostly focusing on ultra endurance events but you can find him doing pretty much every distance, and he also does CrossFit, plays pickle ball, cycles, rows, keeps a beehive (or at least tries!), and goes after all kinds of fun, random world records, all while working and spending time with his wife and two teenage sons. He only sleeps four hours a night, but it's still mind-boggling how he is able to accomplish everything that he does! If you're not familiar with his Running Home project, Mike ran 3,234 miles over 61 days, from May 1st to July 1st, across 13 states, from San Francisco City Hall to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, while raising over 100,000 dollars for World Vision's global clean water initiatives. I wanted to dig into all the details of how he fueled himself across the country, and of course, discuss some of the fun and crazy things that happened along the way.Thank you Mike for spending time with me on the podcast once again, and for continuing to inspire us all with your running accomplishments as well as your wonderful attitude towards life. Also - the audio was a bit choppy for some reason at certain points in the show. My apologies - working to fix that for next time, and hopefully doesn't take away too much from the show!Links & Resources:Website: http://mikewardian.comFollow on Instagram, Facebook, and TwitterMike is still raising money for World Vision USA - link to donate here. Meet Brian Frazier. He's the director of peer-to-peer fundraising for World Vision USA, a Christian humanitarian organization that tackles the causes of poverty and injustice in the world. He's also one of the guiding forces behind World Vision's involvement in Oregon's annual Hood to Coast relay race, the world's largest. Teams of runners trek almost 200 miles from a snow-capped mountain in northern Oregon to the shores of the Pacific Ocean, and Frazier — who is also one of its leading individual fundraisers — will pound the pavement in hopes of realizing World Vision's 2022 goal to provide more people in South Sudan access to clean water. A graduate of Texas A&M, Frazier and his wife of 21 years, Colette, are the parents of four children. He doesn't just walk out his faith as an example to them and others — he literally runs with patience the courses God has put in front of him. That's why he and World Vision were such a hand-in-glove fit, and together they bridge uncomfortable gaps to do the most good. “At Team World Vision, we talk about meeting God on the other side of fear, and just stepping through that fear and seeing what God has for us on the other side,” Frazier said. “It's when we're talking about people that are different than us that God is at work in relationships — that is a perfect place to meet God, that's where breakthrough can happen. When we're stepping through those uncomfortable things, or the things we're not used to … then, all of a sudden, that's when magical things can happen.”
Lyndsey Deane Ratchford is the National Director of Endurance for Team World Vision at World Vision USA. We discuss domestic and international poverty and how their programs are bringing clean water to people around the world. Their events not only address our traditional understanding of poverty as a physical lack, but are also addressing communal and spiritual poverty- all through fitness. Each year we partner with World Vision for the Cheru Challenge and use our fitness to raise funds to bring life saving clean water around the world. You can find out more about the event by visiting www.teamworldvision.org/Cheru. Our next event will be May 6, 2023. It sounds far away, but will be here before we know it. The backbone of our ministry is our chapters. Our chapters are volunteer led communities that are in over 80 cities and 9 countries. Every month, they host a free FAITH + FITNESS Workout at a local gym. If you haven't been to an event, you should definitely check one out. You can find the nearest location by going to www.faithrxd.org/chapters Our next True Strength Camp is happening in Waukesha, WI! To learn more, go to www.faithrxd.org/truestrengthwaukesha All we do at FAITH RXD is possible because of God, first, second because of our incredible volunteers, and in a major way it is also because of our donors. We would ask you to pray about partnering with us in what God is doing by becoming a monthly donor. Seriously, first pray about it. Whether it is $5, $50, $500 or some other amount, it is all used and helps accomplish the mission. If God is leading you to give, you can do that at www.faithrxd.org/donate

How often do we make our plans only to have them suddenly come crumbling down. But what if our crashing plans is part of God's purposes to direct us onto the path He has for us? Certainly that is one perspective if we look at our life through the lens of Proverbs 16:9, which states that "We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps."Nothing could ring truer of this verse than Richard Stearns' life, which is truly a classic story of man's big plans being rerouted by God's bigger blessings. On this episode of the More to Be Podcast, I chat with Richard Stearns, President Emeritus of World Vision USA about the way God took him as young man determined to get into an Ivy League college and corporate success story to a man committed to Jesus, his wife, and twenty years of advocating for the orphaned, the widowed, the sick, and the hungry. His story will renew your hope in God's transforming work and fill you afresh with a sense of awe at how He works. Yes, my friend, God isn't done in our stories and has not quit working in the lives of those we deeply love.Richard Stearns currently serves as President Emeritus for World Vision U.S. after retiring at the end of 2018. He was the longest-serving president of World Vision. Stearns is the second of two children of working-class parents in Syracuse, New York. He worked his way through Cornell University, earning a bachelor's degree in neurobiology in 1973. After receiving a master's degree in business administration from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, Stearns began a career in marketing for several Fortune 500 companies. In 1998, Stearns accepted the role of President at World Vision US. He has traveled to more than 40 of the nearly 100 countries where World Vision works. His wife Renee, a lawyer by training, also travels and speaks on behalf of World Vision. The couple has five children. In 2021 he published his latest book, Lead Like it Matters to God: Values-Driven Leadership in a Success-Driven World.Helpful LinksLead Like it Matters to God by Richard SternsLearn More about Life CoachingJoin the SisterhoodIf you are blessed by our podcast and ministry, we invite you to become a Sisterhood Member as a way of supporting our work. Richard Stearns was President of World Vision USA for 20 years. In this in-depth interview with Premier Christianity's Sam Hailes, he talks about his unexpected calling into the ministry and how he felt completely unprepared and ill-equipped for the role. "I knew nothing about poverty and I remember saying 'Lord I don't know what to do'. It was almost like the Lord said to me 'that's exactly where I want you - dependent on me." Richard also explains how he was able to generate millions of dollars in fundraising for the charity, why Donald Trump's "rhetoric" around refugees has hurt their work and the various challenges which Covid-19 has brought. Richard says the many good news stories about the reduction in poverty are "too often untold". For example, the number of children dying from preventable causes has halved in the past 25 years he says, explaining that he believes charities need to broadcast their successes as much as their pleas for support. Much like the story of many of the guests on this podcast, Amy Claire Patterson did not grow up as a runner or endurance athlete. It wasn’t until just a couple of years ago that she completed her first race. Amy Claire now serves as Team World Vision Indy Area Director at World Vision USA, an organization that is near and dear to our hearts. My husband and I have both raised funds for World Vision through training for 2 separate Chicago Marathons, and we’ve sponsored 2 boys in Africa for 6 years. During this episode, Amy Claire shares about the mission of World Vision as well as how she’s gone from not being athletic to running marathons and even climbing Mount Kilimanjaro where she successfully summited this past summer just a few months after breaking her foot. Amy Claire and I have a lot of fun in this episode as she shares her journey. And after we stopped recording, we bonded over the fact that both of us are from tiny towns in Northwest Iowa, neither of us were athletic in our high school days, and we both have a heart for Team World Vision. Whether you have heard of World Vision, have completed a race with Team World Vision, or simply like hearing stories of endurance, this episode is a fun one.
Taylor and Jessilyn get serious in this episode as they talk about Jessilyn's recent trip to Rwanda with World Vision USA. Then, Taylor interviews Kim Walker Smith, a founding member of Jesus Culture, about her new book. Listen, reflect and laugh in the latest episode of C-Pop.
Genocide. Atrocities. Brokenness. Forgiveness? This is Rwanda, 25 years later. But how did we get here? People of faith revolutionized the country as they treated soul wounds in addition to mending physical infrastructure. And while Rwanda is a success story, there are horrors happening around the globe. Brian Duss of World Vision USA shares how we can take what we've heard about Rwanda and put our faith into action right now.
On today’s episode, Cameron sits down with author and former World Vision president Rich Stearns. Rich was a very successful corporate CEO, which you’ll hear about, and he left it all for something more significant. For the last 20 years he’s led World Vision USA, the largest Christian humanitarian organization in the world. World Vision works in relief efforts, holistic development and advocacy—working with children, families and communities to overcome poverty and injustice. World Vision has a unique strategy of holistic change. They work in communities to make sustainable impact affecting education, health care, economic development, and the promotion of justice. The goal is always to eventually hand the keys over and leave. They work with local leadership to give a hand-up, not just hand-outs. It’s not hyperbole to say that Rich Stearns’ vision, faith and leadership has literally saved millions of lives and changed the world. Rich’s story shows how the gospel—the whole gospel—was always meant to be a world changing social revolution. And it’s a revolution that begins with each of us.
Three years ago, I read two life-changing books that completely transformed the way that I think about my own purpose and meaning in life, and whether I'm truly making a difference in the world or whether I'm simply engaged in a relentless pursuit of "fitnessing" without actually making an impact in anyone's life. The books - titled "" and "" - were written by author , the president of a company called - a global Christian humanitarian organization that partners with children, families, and their communities to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice. Within just a few weeks of reading the books, my children and I had "adopted" a little girl from Ethiopia, who we send gifts and financial support to each month. We'd also begun volunteering more in our local community and doing a better job teaching others about the importance of purpose and passion in life, love and relationships, and belief in a higher power. These are all values I highlight in my article: "" Now, when it comes to helping care for and support others and equipping others on this planet to experience a more fulfilling life, I'm about to take things to the next level. How? By supporting World Vision's bold initiative called the "" Economic Empowerment program. THRIVE is based on the fact that millions of people in the most impoverished parts of the world are smallholder farmers who lack access to the knowledge, capital, markets, technology, and information they need to build thriving businesses. World Vision’s fully integrated, proven approach to economic empowerment is designed to equip these hardworking men and women to move from surviving to - you guessed it - thriving. Ultimately, this helps hardworking families break the cycle of extreme poverty for good. My guest on today's podcast, Christopher Shore, is the Chief Development Officer of this entire "" Economic Empowerment program. Now in his 20th year with World Vision, Chris works on issues which contribute to the work of THRIVE – specifically building improved and resilient livelihoods for smallholder farmers. Chris began partnering with World Vision on microfinance issues while working for the Mennonite Economic Development Associates. He joined World Vision as National Director in Romania in 1997. He moved to California to lead World Vision’s microfinance and economic development work starting in 2001, and was largely focused on microfinance. Chris founded VisionFund International in 2003 and handed leadership to Scott Brown in 2006. That same year Chris turned his attention to the non-microfinance aspects of economic development, and began World Vision’s Natural Environment and Climate Issues group, which he led full-time starting in 2008. In 2011 Chris became one of the architects of Securing Africa’s Future in Tanzania – now THRIVE. In 2013 he led that work for East and West Africa, and in 2015 moved to World Vision USA. Chris is Canadian, lives in Southern California, is married to Dr. Susan Shore, and is father to Andrew and Katrina. He enjoys cycling, gardening, and woodworking. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The shocking concept of generational poverty and how a vicious cycle persists from generation to generation in many countries in Africa, from Tanzania to Rwanda and beyond...18:15 -How THRIVE shifts mindsets to an understanding that every person has great value, and possesses the power and responsibility to move from dependency to dignity...27:30 -The "bank" that THRIVE then helps each farmer to create in their local community to create end-to-end business of farming...31:45 -The importance of natural resource management and how THRIVE helps farmers manage their on-farm soil, vegetation, and water management, and to manage and rehabilitate forests, watersheds, and grasslands...41:40 -How THRIVE teaches emergency and situational awareness and teaches the farmers how to manage investments and risks and needs information to deal with shocks, emergencies, and change around them...52:00 -The way that hardworking farmers finally have the ability to consistently feed their children nutritious food; send them to school; cover bills for basic healthcare; build a house made of brick with a metal roof instead of mud, sticks, and straw; and reinvest in their businesses...57:00 -How you can support this entire program and even visit Africa to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro and see the THRIVE initiative in action...1:04:30 -And much more!
