This Holiday Season, Create a Tradition That Transforms Lives What if this Christmas, your family could do something more meaningful than decorating the tree or exchanging gifts—something that plants seeds of kindness and changes lives across the globe? Imagine a tradition that not only brings joy to others but also shapes your children’s hearts with a lifelong spirit of generosity. This holiday, make giving the greatest gift of all. How can we make this a reality? Catherine’s guest, Brian Frazier, shares his powerful journey of faith and purpose. With nearly 15 years at World Vision—a Christian humanitarian organization that brings hope to the poor and oppressed—Brian has witnessed firsthand the transformational power of generosity. Inspired by a life-changing trip to India, Brian left a successful career in engineering and banking to dedicate his life to helping others. His commitment even led his family to relocate to Bangalore, India, in pursuit of service. In this episode, Catherine and Brian explore how families can embrace generosity and make an extraordinary impact through simple acts of giving. Here’s what you’ll discover: The Power of Family Giving: Brian shares how involving children in charitable activities—like choosing gifts through World Vision’s gift catalog—can create meaningful family traditions that inspire lifelong habits of giving. World Vision’s Global Impact: Learn how World Vision has sparked transformative change—from creating Mongolia’s first Christian radio station to delivering clean water to villages in Rwanda. Stories That Inspire Hope: Hear about Rachida, an 8-year-old Sudanese refugee who found hope through World Vision’s efforts after losing her family to war. Lives Transformed: Experience the joy of a family in Zambia whose life was forever changed by a goat-herding program, offering them new opportunities and hope for the future. Generosity as a Legacy: Discover how small acts—like sponsoring a child or giving a life-changing gift—can instill values of compassion and selflessness in your children, creating a lasting legacy of generosity. Building Global Bridges: Reflect on how connecting with those in need—whether across the world or in your community—brings hope, fuels dreams, and reminds us of the profound difference we can make together. This episode is an invitation to bring your faith to life this Christmas season through actionable, family-focused giving. Together, we can bridge the gap between affluence and need, offering hope to children around the world while creating cherished family traditions grounded in love and service. For more information, to sponsor a child, or to explore the gift catalog, visit worldvision.org. Start a tradition of generosity today, and let this Christmas be remembered as the season your family gave the gift of hope. About the Guest: Brian Frazier is the Executive Director of Team World Vision, a program of World Vision that mobilizes individuals—many of them non-runners—to conquer half and full marathons in support of ending the global water crisis in Jesus’ name. In his role, Brian passionately inspires people to take on physical challenges on behalf of the world’s most vulnerable communities. Brian’s unconventional career path began in engineering, transitioned to banking with a focus on microfinance, and ultimately led him to finding his calling in fundraising. Over the course of his career with World Vision, Brian has worked in more than 30 countries. His unique perspective and broad skill set fuel his commitment to advocating for the forgotten and marginalized. Brian lives in Houston, Texas, with his wife, Colette. Together, they are the proud parents of four wonderful children: Corban, Haddon, Kai, and Niya. Episode Links: World Vision Gift Catalog. This was several firsts for me: 1st World Major marathon…and as a charity runner for a race…and first time as an adult tourist in Chicago! I was one of the more than 52,000 people, a record number, to finish the 2024 Chicago Marathon. Listen to this “Run the Race” episode to hear about the inspiration (like singing “Amazing Grace” with 1,000 other runners) pre-marathon…the logistics of this huge event and race route that was mostly flat…the incredible support from more than a million spectators including plenty of funny signs…raising money for and being a part of Team World Vision…what I saw and ate in the Windy City, from the Chicago River and deep dish pizza to really cool parks and Chicago dogs…plus dealing with post-race blues and recovery. Why are we afraid when Jesus is with us? This weekend we continued our HEART & SOUL series as special guest Steve Spear shared about running for clean drinking water in Africa.Luke 8:24-25He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples. After resigning from his job and selling their business, Steve Spear and his wife set out on a journey to raise millions of dollars to provide clean water for the most vulnerable in nations around the world. At each turning point and step in his journey, he had to ask himself a simple question:Other than fear, what is holding me back from doing what God is calling me to do?Jesus leads us on a journey and invites us to follow. When his disciples set out on the boat, Jesus knew what was ahead, but they had to depend on him to get there. There are a few things that the disciples learned on this journey. Jesus calms storms.Jesus is with us.Jesus heals and transforms. But all of these truths and experiences turn on one important point:We never know what's on the other side until we go. Choosing to follow Jesus in faith means we do things we never thought we could do!

For the past few years, the Scaling UP! H2O Podcast has had the humbling opportunity to partner with World Vision to help bring an end to the Global Water Crisis. This year, we are inviting Crystal O'Rourke, Sr. Representative at World Vision, on the show to share how Water Treaters and Water Treatment companies can get involved to bring clean drinking water to the millions of women and children who need it most. If you've ever wondered about the questions below, then this episode will inspire you to join water treaters around the world to end the world water crisis by 2030:  What does Team World Vision do? How many people in the world do not have access to close and clean drinking water? How can someone sponsor a child through Team World Vision? Why a 6K and not a 5K? Why the bright orange shirts? How does World Vision provide clean drinking water for one person for only $50? How does World Vision work with indigenous leaders and engineers to find the best source of water for those communities facing a water crisis? How does having access to close and clean drinking water change communities?  How can I get involved to end the Global Water Crisis by 2030? Bottom line: Water Treaters are on the front lines of resource management and partnering with World Vision is a great way to solve the Global Water Crisis.    Timestamps Trace Blackmore welcomes you to World Water Day and invites all listeners to join our podcast's 6K Team [1:15] Interview with Crystal O'Rourke, Sr. Representative at World Vision, about ways water treaters can help to end the Global Water Crisis [3:20] Trace invites all water treaters to participate in the Global 6K for Water [30:30] Periodic Water Table With James McDonald [37:00]   Quotes “World Vision focuses on humanitarian work, bringing advocacy for the poor and oppressed, bringing justice and humanitarian affairs, including community development, and even emergency response.” - Crystal O'Rourke  “We help communities by providing needs to the communities by providing supplies, food, water, first aid.” - Crystal O'Rourke  “It is a 6K, not a 5K, because 6K is the average distance women and children have to walk to a water source that is usually diseased and dirty and carries a 50% mortality rate for children under the age of 5.” - Crystal O'Rourke  “Every 6K registration brings a lifetime of clean water for one person.” - Crystal O'Rourke  “Hope, joy, and justice for all children.” - Crystal O'Rourke  “Giving parents, families, and companies an opportunity to teach that we can make a difference.” - Crystal O'Rourke  “The clean water crisis is big, 1 in 10 people are lacking access to close clean drinking water, but we can do something about it. Have you ever been called to something bigger than yourself knowing it would take a village to see that dream realized? Do you remember where you were the first time you heard and learned about global poverty to a level that interrupted your thoughts enough to either move you physically to do something about it or emotionally to empathize to a degree that you knew you could no longer turn a blind eye. For me, I remember the time as a high school kid where I changed the channel when stumbling across a commercial to send $$ to children in resource limited countries across the world because I didn't have the capacity to save every child or give for that matter. When I learned the very personal impact I could have in one child's life through sponsoring their needs monthly or raising awareness I was in! When I realized by coming alongside others with the same hopes that our impact could be multiplied through organizations like World Vision giving access to clean water, food and daily essentials, even education in hopes to bridge the gap so many children could rise out of poverty. There are other incredible organizations doing this, but today I want to focus on a unique angle with Team World Vision and their commitment to run for clean water and fullness of life. I'm both excited and honored to share a conversation I had with Gabrielle Cauchon who is rallying her community, and perhaps you, to be part of the impact and help change some lives. Lyndsey Deane Ratchford is the National Director of Endurance for Team World Vision at World Vision USA. We discuss domestic and international poverty and how their programs are bringing clean water to people around the world. Their events not only address our traditional understanding of poverty as a physical lack, but are also addressing communal and spiritual poverty- all through fitness.    Each year we partner with World Vision for the Cheru Challenge and use our fitness to raise funds to bring life saving clean water around the world. You can find out more about the event by visiting www.teamworldvision.org/Cheru. Our next event will be May 6, 2023. It sounds far away, but will be here before we know it.   The backbone of our ministry is our chapters. Our chapters are volunteer led communities that are in over 80 cities and 9 countries. Every month, they host a free FAITH + FITNESS Workout at a local gym. If you haven't been to an event, you should definitely check one out. You can find the nearest location by going to www.faithrxd.org/chapters   Our next True Strength Camp is happening in Waukesha, WI! We would ask you to pray about partnering with us in what God is doing by becoming a monthly donor. Seriously, first pray about it. Whether it is $5, $50, $500 or some other amount, it is all used and helps accomplish the mission. If God is leading you to give, you can do that at www.faithrxd.org/donate

Today, I invited Aaron Walker AKA “Big A” back on the podcast to talk about his experience when he went on a two-month Sabbatical in 2021.  As a business owner, Big A founded 14 companies over the past 42 years, and going on a Sabbatical was a difficult thing to consider. But with the persuasion of many of his Mastermind group members and his doctor, he went on a Sabbatical on November 1st, 2021, completely unplugging from everyone except his family for the rest of the year. Aaron has credited his wonderful team and his executive assistant to whom he delegated tasks for keeping his business on the right track while he stepped away for two months. I've always thought that a Sabbatical is just a fancy word for rich people to take an extended vacation, but it was so much more. Aaron Walker opened my eyes to what Sabbaticals are truly about. More than that, I learned that the strength of the business isn't due to the strength of the business owner; the strength of the business lies with the team that the business owner has developed. Bottom line: Aaron Walker will talk about his two-month Sabbatical and how it changed his life. I've always said that the water treatment industry is the best industry in the world. The opportunities in the water industry are endless. If you work in the water treatment industry, you know that you'll be secure for the rest of your life. Businesses will always need water treaters, everyone will always need clean water. In today's episode, my lab partner is someone who's worked in the water treatment industry for 42 years: Jerry Angelili. Jerry started his career at Betz Laboratories, where he worked as a Sales Representative and Account Manager for 14 years. He then worked at three more companies before joining Chem-Aqua in 2007. He started as a Senior Engineer, responsible for technical assistance to the corporate sales force in selling and servicing prospects and customers in the area of boiler, cooling, and wastewater treatment applications. He would eventually become the Manager of Oxidative Technology, managing Chem-Aqua's existing and potential applications of chlorine dioxide ozone, and peracetic acid, and the Manager of Engineering until he retired in 2020. An expert in Chlorine Dioxide and its applications, Jerry holds two patents to his name: one for the portable water treatment system and apparatus (US 8211296) and another for the portable water treatment method (US 8226832), which were both issued on April 9, 2010. He was also a member of AWT, serving in the Technical Committee, specifically with boilers.  Jerry aspired to become a doctor when he was in college, majoring in Biology at the University of Pittsburgh. But lucky for us that Jerry decided to go into water treatment or we wouldn't have some of the technologies and industry knowledge we have today. Bottom line: Armed with 42 years of experience in water treatment, Jerry Angelili will share with us how we can embrace new technologies to make the entire water treatment industry better. Take this week to think about the proper order of corrosion coupons and why it matters.    Quotes: “I provided Betz with assistance without being denigrating. Happy World Water Day! We've been celebrating World Water Day since 1993, and this year we are celebrating in an extra special way. My guest today is someone whom I introduced on Episode 236 when I interviewed Reid Hutchison; it's none other than Steve Spear of Team World Vision.  World Vision is a Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families, and their communities to combat poverty and injustice. They are also the largest non-governmental provider of clean water in the world. One of the ways they provide clean drinking water to families and children is by organizing a yearly event that we are going to talk more about in this episode: the Global 6K for Water. But first, let me introduce you to Steve Spear. Steve leads a team of 40 staff at World Vision, the largest Christian organization on the planet, engaging churches across the U.S. to make a difference for the most vulnerable children. Before that, he held a senior-level leadership position at Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington, IL for 15 years, and was the head of various pioneering efforts.  Steve has done many mind-blowing things for his advocacy to bring clean water to communities that need it the most. He ran across the country, from Los Angeles to New York to raise over $500,000 for clean water. In 2017, the U.S. Congress recognized Steve for his humanitarian work and as a role model for all Americans.  I'm also happy to announce that the Scaling UP! H2O podcast has created a team for this year's Global 6K for Water happening on Saturday, May 21, 2022, and I want YOU to join our team! You can learn more about Team Scaling UP! Nation or make a donation HERE. We'd love for you and your friends, family, and co-workers to join Team Scaling UP! Nation, but if you'd like to make your own Global 6K for Water team for your business/employees, please reach out to Steve Spear at sspear@worldvision.org. Bottom line: You can bring clean drinking water to communities that need it most just by putting one foot in front of the other at the Global 6K. We can bring awareness to this issue, and participate as a global water treatment community. Your roadside friend, as you travel from client to client.   -Trace    Timestamps:  Happy World Water Day! In the developing world, we know the lack of clean water is the number one cause of preventable death on the planet.” - Steve Spear “Education becomes an opportunity, healthcare skyrockets because the base layer of water, which is needed for every other building block to move a community out of poverty, is taken care of.” - Steve Spear “One of the key things we do at World Vision that activates people is child sponsorship, putting a name and a face to the cause.“ - Steve Spear “I devote myself to inviting others to put one foot in front of the other to create a whole new future for children with no access to clean water.” - Steve Spear “6K is the average distance that women and children walk in the developing world to get water.” - Steve Spear “6K is a distance of solidarity.” - Steve Spear “Anybody can do a 6K; people run it, tons of people walk it.” - Steve Spear“ Water is life.” - Steve Spear “Anyone can do a 6K; I've done it with a 78-year-old woman with a walker.” - Steve Spear “World Vision is the largest non-government provider of clean drinking water on the planet.” - Steve Spear   Connect with Steve Spear: Phone: (630) 414-1300  Email: sspear@worldvision.org Website: global6k.worldvision.org LinkedIn: in/steve-spear-19aa71146   Links Mentioned: CWT Prep Course World Vision Global 6k 236 The One Where We Talk About Waters Treaters Changing The World   Events: World Water Day - March 22 2022 Technical Training Seminars - March 30 to April 02 in Cleveland, OH

In this week's episode, we're thinking about water loss in a closed loop system. What is an acceptable water loss?  Is it 10%, 5%, or even 0%?  How does the volume of the system factor into what size water loss is acceptable?  What is being lost beyond water with a leak?  What can cause a closed loop to lose water?  How do you know it's losing water?  Are there times when a makeup water meter may miss a low-flow makeup?  What things may be introduced with fresh makeup water that could cause problems within the closed loop?  What is the cost of the water loss?  Do you know the value of the closed loop's water in $/1000 gallons or even $/100 gallons for smaller systems?  Knowing the value may help get other parties on board to address the water loss, if necessary.  Take this next week to think about water losses in closed loop systems and what you may or may not deem as acceptable.   Quotes: “The World Vision 6K for Water: an event that raises awareness and money for clean water efforts in the world, and specifically serves people who do not have access to safe drinking water.” - Reid Hutchison “The World Vision 6K for Water allows people to move their feet and invite others, raise awareness, and raise money to help bring an end to the global water crisis.” - Reid Hutchison “It is called a 6K for water, not a 5K, because 6K is the average distance that folks who do not have access to clean water need to walk daily in order to get water.” - Reid Hutchison “Our biggest goal is to inspire people to participate in the World Vision 6K for Water.” - Reid Hutchison “By 2030, it is possible that the global water crisis will be solved or ended. Yes!  You are in!  Deeper!  Casey aka the Jogging Jesus is back.   No, he's not the real Jesus.  He just kinda looks like what we think Jesus looks like.  Plus he does jog, has raised thousands of dollars for clean water via Team World Vision and will randomly pray for strangers on his runs.  So, what I love about Casey is that he won't sugar coat.  I'm going to encourage you to listen 'ALL' the way through. I love the way Casey opens up talking about his love for the United States, our freedoms and for those that seek to protect us.  As he continues, you may bristle like I did with having to review some history.  Hey, sometimes we don't like looking back.  Yet the wise will learn from their mistakes.  History can be a great teacher so we don't make the same mistakes.  As I shared back on Veteran's Day 2020, I challenge anyone to show me a more diverse country with the same freedoms.  You can't.  I don't see anyone looking like Barak Obama that has led China or Japan or Saudi Arabia or England or even Canada!  Not yet.  Oh right, Casey, sorry.  This dude tackle racism, word play, abortion, bullies, just about every 'hot button' that people go nuts over.  And he does it with grace.  So without further adieu, here is another Deeper sesh by Casey giving you some things that wiil make you go hmmmmmm...

Full TranscriptTom Garrity, The Garrity Group [00:00:01] It's. Welcome to the Perception podcast. This is Tom Garrity. We have a lot going on here at the guarantee that I wanted to share with you something that is off the beaten path, literally and figuratively. Some of you know, I'm training to run the Black Hills ultra 50-mile race for Team World Vision. It's in South Dakota at the end of June. And as a part of the training and encouragement, I had a chance to speak with world record holder. An ultra-marathoner, Michael Motian was gracious enough to share some insights that I think are also applicable in the world of public relations. And we'll tell you how at the end of the interview. Right now, picking up on Michael Wardian, talking about his background in running Michael Wardian, Ultramarathon Runner [00:00:50] qualified, ran the Boston Marathon, got hooked with running and then fell into Ultra shortly thereafter. I did my first 50-mile race in nineteen ninety-seven, so quite a few years ago. Then I've progressed through things. All ranked runners to international runners eventually earn my way through teams and been a pro athlete now for going on 20 some years. So, it's been it's been quite a journey from not even knowing how many laps are in a 400 to running for multiple days running across countries and representing Team USA along the way. So I've been really fortunate to have had the chance to, you know, take up a sport that I'm so into and passionate about and excited about. And I think the greatest thing, too, is just the chance to meet people along the way and do some good. And so I think that's what we're doing here. Tom Garrity, The Garrity Group [00:01:59] Outstanding team World Vision. How did you first get become aware of team World Vision? Michael Wardian, Ultramarathon Runner [00:02:07] And I'd say. I was probably I'd seen the logos and the shirts at some events. I feel like I may have seen team World Vision at Comrade's one year in South Africa. And then I was in twenty seventeen. I won the World Marathon Challenge, where you run seven marathons in seven days on seven continents and one of the prizes for winning that was you won fifteen thousand dollars. I think it was actually fifteen thousand euro donation to any charity of your choice. And in my professional life outside of running I'm an international broker. And so we work with like a bunch of private voluntary relief organizations, including World Vision ship, like bulk wheat and stuff to places all around the world. And then I'd seen the team, World Vision people, and I met some of them. And I thought, well, that would be a great charity. It'd be a two for one. Like, they do stuff up and running and they do stuff and in humanitarian food aid. So I was able to donate that check to World Vision and I kind of got introduced to Brian and Josh along the way. And then I was asked to be a part of the hood to coast relay. So that was that was really cool. And then I did some of the six ks for water locally. So definitely, definitely been, you know, a lengthy kind of journey with World Vision. I haven't got a chance to go to any of the mission sites yet. So that was something I was hoping to do when I ran comrade's. And it just hasn't happened yet. But hopefully that'll be coming up in the future. Tom Garrity, The Garrity Group [00:04:04] Outstanding. Outstan

Much like the story of many of the guests on this podcast, Amy Claire Patterson did not grow up as a runner or endurance athlete. It wasn’t until just a couple of years ago that she completed her first race. Amy Claire now serves as Team World Vision Indy Area Director at World Vision USA, an organization that is near and dear to our hearts. My husband and I have both raised funds for World Vision through training for 2 separate Chicago Marathons, and we’ve sponsored 2 boys in Africa for 6 years. During this episode, Amy Claire shares about the mission of World Vision as well as how she’s gone from not being athletic to running marathons and even climbing Mount Kilimanjaro where she successfully summited this past summer just a few months after breaking her foot. Amy Claire and I have a lot of fun in this episode as she shares her journey. And after we stopped recording, we bonded over the fact that both of us are from tiny towns in Northwest Iowa, neither of us were athletic in our high school days, and we both have a heart for Team World Vision. The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; ?he rescues those whose spirits are crushed. ?- Psalm 34:18 Today’s Speaker Michael Chitwood Husband, Father, Brother, Dear Friend, River City Member and National Director of Team World Vision.Michael is the author of “The Ability To Endure” Pain is a certainty in this life. It is guaranteed to find us. At times it may feel like grief has sought us out. When we face this type of suffering, our instinct is to run from it. But no matter how we try, we simply cannot outrun it. This book is about pain and loss and heartache. It’s about being at the end of yourself — losing faith in anything and everything, and then finding hope in the strangest of places. Finding redemption where it seems least likely that God would ever show up. It’s about how when you think all is lost, it isn’t. How when it seems like there is no reason to take one more step forward, there is. It’s about realizing our instinct to run when life gets tough. And it’s about wanting God to make life easier, and instead he gives you the ability to endure. Thanks for letting me share my story with you. http://www.theabilitytoendure.com/

This was an inspiring conversation for me and I hope it will be for you too. Thank you so much for listening and learning! This leadership portrait features Jeff and Kari Patterson. Together, they are the leaders of Renew Church in Oregon City, Oregon. Jeff is the lead pastor at Renew Church and also a triathlete. He's currently training for a half-ironman triathlon raining money for Team World Vision, helping provide clean drinking water to people in need. Kari Patterson is a well known speaker, blogger, and author of several books such as "Faithfully Frugal: spend less, give more, and live more." You can learn more about Kari at her website and also follow her blog, "The Sacred Mundane." Jeff and Kari have two children, Dutch and Heidi. Together they live in Beaver Creek, Oregon. Quotes from Jeff Patterson: "People like to follow a leader who doesn't have it all together." "Our title should follow the character we have." "If I think of others as lesser than me, I will not elevate them." Quotes from Kari Patterson: "What men do in private effects every relationship they have." "Public dishonor is chipping away at people's ability to follow that person." Building and protecting trust: -Never embarrass or make another person uncomfortable publicly. -Create safety to fail in private by never misrepresenting your spouse/team in public. -Ask for permission before sharing private stories in a public setting, and only if they will be helpful for others to know. -Make role/job decisions based on gifting rather than tradition. -Look for and act on opportunities to honor each other in public. -Don't advertise a private disagreement into a public setting.
