Send us a textI spent a decade convinced I had a "broken brain," relying on the highest dose of Adderall just to get by. But what if the biggest struggle of your life becomes your greatest strength? In this special episode, originally recorded during my conversation with Adam Metwally on his podcast 'That One Time,' I'm sharing that very personal story. I recount the 10 years on medication (from age 8 to 18), the anxiety, the feeling of being disconnected, and the pivotal moment I discovered neuroplasticity – the key that unlocked incredible academic success and helped me get off meds for good.Together with Adam, I break down the 4 Pillars that were foundational to my transformation: Sleep, Nutrition, Movement, and Mind. You'll hear the specific, actionable strategies I personally used – like optimizing light exposure for circadian rhythm, managing core body temperature for deep sleep, fueling my brain with targeted nutrition (and avoiding common pitfalls like processed foods and potential heavy metals), harnessing progressive overload training for mental resilience, and implementing powerful time and attention management techniques that allowed me to thrive without medication.Ultimately, I learned to reframe that challenging decade not as a curse, but as the "best thing that ever happened" because it led me to dedicate my life to this work. This conversation goes beyond just my story; it's about turning struggle into strength and reclaiming your power through understanding your own biology. If you're looking to enhance focus naturally, navigate the complexities of ADHD or stimulant medication, or optimize your cognitive performance by mastering the fundamentals, I encourage you to listen to this deep dive recorded on 'That One Time with Adam Metwally'.

We delve deeper into the intricate relationship between self-awareness and mental health, emphasizing that this crucial skill requires continuous nurturing throughout different life stages. Through the lens of Dr. Ramsey's book, "Healing the Modern Brain," we explore scientifically-backed strategies for enhancing self-awareness, notably the practice of journaling. Dr. Ramsey articulates how self-reflective processes, such as journaling, can activate our prefrontal cortex—a vital area of the brain linked to decision-making and executive functioning. He shares practical advice for incorporating journaling into our daily routines, pointing out how just a few minutes can significantly enhance our emotional clarity and mental fitness. We also discuss real-world applications and personal anecdotes that highlight the transformative power of self-awareness. One particularly poignant story involves Charlotte, a woman whose pandemic-driven drinking habits led her to seek help. Through self-awareness and a structured accountability process, she achieved remarkable change, illustrating how building awareness can lay the foundation for recovery from challenges such as substance abuse. The conversation invites listeners to consider their own mental health journeys and the pivotal role self-awareness plays in them. #anxietyrelief #mentalhealthmatters #nutritionmatters #selfcare #braingames #urbanlife #neuroscience #socialconnection #emotionalintelligence #journalingprompts #wellnessjourney #mentalstrength #depressionawareness #therapyworks #lifecoaching #healthyliving #dietplan #foodismedicine #scientificresearch #clinicaltrials #psychologicalwellbeing #behavioralhealth #traumainformed #sleephygiene #communitysupport #lifestylemedicine #preventativecare #mentalhealthawarenessday #alternativemedicine #holistichealth #GinaRyan #ACP #AnxietyCoachesPodcast Learn more about your ad choices. Pique We've done quite a few podcast episodes on the performance benefits of caffeine. But, if you're like many runners I know, pre-run coffee often leaves you with jitters or stomach issues. That's why I was so excited when I found Nandaka by Pique—the ultimate coffee alternative designed to power your runs, your training, and your recovery. So, what makes Nandaka different? Most so-called “coffee alternatives” don't actually provide functional energy. But Nandaka is built for endurance Unlike coffee, which spikes your energy and leaves you crashing mid-run, Nandaka fuels you with steady, sustained endurance—no spikes, no crashes, just clean energy that lasts. Nandaka provides its caffeine from fermented probiotic teas, which provide a slow-release caffeine that prevents jitters and gives you sustained release for those long runs workouts. It also contains cordyceps mushrooms, which help boost VO2 max, delivering more oxygen to your muscles for better endurance Plus, the probiotic teas mean no digestive distress like you often get with coffee. If you're tired of running on fumes—or worse, running on coffee crashes—it's time to make the switch. Right now, Pique is offering 20% off for life AND a free Starter Kit with your first purchase. Go to Piquelife.com/run and start running on real energy today. Your legs, your lungs, and your PRs will thank you

Have you ever felt like stress is draining your energy, focus, and resilience—no matter how much you try to manage it? What if stress isn't just about what's happening around you, but about how your brain and body process it behind the scenes? In this episode, Dr. Greg Kelly joins Dr. Aimie to dive into the hidden biology of stress and uncover how it consumes your mental bandwidth, disrupts your brain's energy supply, and impacts your ability to think clearly and recover from challenges. You'll discover how your brain's prediction systems influence your stress response—and, more importantly, how to work with them to prevent burnout and build lasting resilience. Dr. Kelly is an expert in integrative and functional medicine with years of experience researching how the brain and body handle stress. He has worked extensively on strategies to enhance resilience, combining his deep knowledge of neurobiology, nutrition, and the body's natural stress-response mechanisms. Welcome to episode 58 of the Pound of Cure Weight Loss Podcast, where Dr. Matthew Weiner and Zoe Schroeder dive into cutting-edge obesity treatments like GLP-1 medications (like Ozempic and Mounjaro) and their role alongside bariatric surgery and nutrition. This episode delivers insights into new research, nutrition strategies, and the future of affordable Semaglutide production.GLP-1 Medications vs. Bariatric Surgery: A Data-Driven ComparisonA recent study presented at the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery examined 40,000 participants' weight loss outcomes across three approaches: lifestyle changes, GLP-1 medications, and bariatric surgery.Lifestyle changes led to 7% weight loss but most of the weight returned within four years.GLP-1 medications like Wegovy achieved 15-22% weight loss, though over 50% was regained upon stopping treatment.Bariatric surgery offered the most durable results, with gastric bypass patients maintaining 25% total weight loss after 10 years.Dr. Weiner emphasized that combining these tools often yields the best results, rather than choosing one in isolation. “When used strategically, they complement each other to lower your metabolic setpoint effectively,” he explained.Addition vs. Restriction: A New Approach to DietingMost diets focus on restriction, which fails over time. Instead, Zoe advocates for an addition mindset, emphasizing nutrient-dense foods like vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats.“When you focus on what you can add rather than what you must cut out, it naturally crowds out less healthy choices and fosters a sustainable, positive mindset,” she explained.Semaglutide's Global Impact and the Rise of GenericsDr. Weiner highlighted a groundbreaking development in the global production of Semaglutide. Due to a favorable ruling in India, generic versions could be available by 2026, potentially lowering costs significantly.“This could be a game-changer for millions who currently can't access Semaglutide,” Dr. Weiner noted, though challenges like cold-chain transport and international legality remain.Nutrition Strategies for GLP-1 SuccessFor those using GLP-1 medications, Zoe shares essential dietary tips to optimize results and minimize side effects:Prioritize vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, nuts, seeds, and legumes.Avoid greasy and processed foods that can worsen nausea or digestive issues.“This unprocessed, nutrient-dense diet mirrors the advice we give post-bariatric surgery patients,” Dr. Weiner added.Key Takeaways1. GLP-1 Medications: Transformative but most effective when paired with proper nutrition and, in some cases, surgery.2. Restriction Diets Are Outdated: Adopt an addition mindset to foster long-term, sustainable success.3. Bariatric Surgery's Durability: Surgery offers unmatched long-term weight loss results, especially when integrated with other tools.4. Affordable Semaglutide Is Coming: Generic production in India could reshape global access by 2026.Final ThoughtsEpisode 58 reveals the synergistic power of combining GLP-1 medications, bariatric surgery, and the right nutrition strategies. If you're ready to take control of your metabolic setpoint, this episode provides the tools and insights you need.
