‘Tall girls just aren't that pretty.'That's how we're made to feel or even what we're told growing up by our crush, our peers, even family and friends, and strangers. And it's not a one-and-done thing. In fact, it's recurring. We hear and feel this often enough for us to wonder: Does everyone have the same viewpoint of tall women? That we're these ‘big', awkward skyscrapers? Why? Why is this the case? I got 3 words for ya: Societal beauty standards. This is explained in a piece written in the Minnesota Daily by Sidney Clarke, who says, “height has been inextricably associated with a lack of conventional beauty.” Why is this the case? And how can we overcome this?Well, that's what today's episode is all about! What It's REALLY Like Being A Tall Girl | Why It's Such An Isolating Experience

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 17, 2025 22:18

Truthfully, being tall can be an isolating experience. I mean, it's very rare to have a moment where you can just feel like everyone else. Whenever you walk into a room, you're immediately noticed and get stares. People feel the need to make comments about your height. You see that cute fit your friends are wearing? Yeah, you can't wear that because it's not long enough. Experiences like these add up over time, causing us to feel like the odd one out constantly. Like the world treats you differently because of something you can't control. After a while, you start to wonder if there's a place for you or just anyone who can understand or relate or literally treat you like a normal human being. Today, I will be breaking down why many of us tall women feel this silent loneliness and why we shouldn't downplay this or pretend it doesn't affect us. Ok, was this a bit dramatic?? Maybe. But also not really. Because high school me/middle school me felt this way. Felt really isolated, felt like the odd one out. And I wanna say super early on that this episode is to not complain about being tall or hating on it. Because I know people will say “oh you're so lucky to be tall”  and bla bla bla like I get it. For real. Being tall is a blessing but it also has its trying moments. People will call you the weirdest names. And say the most heinous things about your body and height. Strangers will stare and point at you in public. Even your friends will say/do some shady things. All of this is on top of the fact that you're hyper-aware of your height in public and are constantly comparing your height to your shorter peers. When living in a world where many people are shorter than you, it can be hard. Truthfully. If you can relate, I highly recommend checking this episode out! Buy Me A Coffee: https://buymeacoffee.com/atallgirlspodcast Subscribe to A Tall Girl's Newsletter: https://atallgirlspodcast.beehiiv.com/subscribeLet's stay connected: https://beacons.ai/atallgirlspodcast Leave a review and let me know how tall you are: https://atallgirlspodcast.com/reviews

Ya girl is 23 years old PERIODDDDDDD XDDDDDD. I had a whole thing over the weekend to celebrate my birthday since my birthday was indeed on a Tuesday EWUH lol so we had to work but if you wanna see what happened and some flicks and such, make sure you check out my socials. And don't forget to wish me a happy birthday! Alrighty, today we are talking about how some tall clothing is in fact not tall clothing. Over the course of the past few months, I've stumbled across a few videos of some tall girls complaining about how pants that were labeled as “tall” or “long” aren't actually “tall” or “long”. Like the jeans were not hitting their ankles. Not even close LOL. And I find this interesting because when we talk about tall girl problems in regards to clothing, we typically talk about how clothing brands don't cater to us at all. Like there's no tall clothing available at that particular store. BUT we don't talk about when tall brands do have tall clothing lines, but the items STILL AREN'T LONG ENOUGH. Now that's a whole different level lol because it's like why are you gonna label something as tall but it's not long enough?? Where did you get your market research from? Did you even do any market research?? Anyways, I will go deeper into why these brands have tall clothing lines that aren't actually “tall” and where we should be getting our clothes from instead. Okay, I have to ask – am I the only one? Am I the only tall girly who has considered height reduction surgery? Okay I was like 10 when I was actively considering it lol so there was no way that was ever really gonna happen but still. I hated my height so much that I genuinely wanted it. But thank goodness I didn't get it because NOW I really do love my height. So, what is height reduction surgery? Height reduction surgery is a procedure that aims to reduce overall height by removing a portion of a bone or intentionally damaging growth plates to stop further growth. And yes okay this is a real thing; go and look it up…or just listen to this episode. I honestly think there are several medical reasons why someone would get this surgery, such as to even out limbs that are at different lengths, but this procedure remains rare. Why?? Who knows. Maybe because of the various risks associated with it. However, the tall girlies are not looking to get this procedure for medical reasons. So why would they actively consider it? Tune in to the full episode to find out! And a big thanks to Sumissura for sponsoring today's episode! Finding clothes that actually fit our length and proportions is one of the biggest struggles tall women face. Because, let's be real, most big brands just don't get it. They either ignore us completely or think adding a couple of inches makes something “tall.” Yeah… not quite. That's where Sumissura comes in. They're a custom clothing brand that uses a made-to-measure system to create garments tailored to your body. All you have to do is enter your height, weight, and body type, and using over 13 years of algorithm training, they predict your measurements, including leg length, waist, and more so that you never have to second-guess the fit.  Check out their links below to dress the real you:Website: https://www.sumissura.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sumissura/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@sumissuraFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/sumissura I tried Sumissura! – https://youtu.be/1RctObtSlXc?si=blXb_yW6UMFw3nLo Buy Me A Coffee: https://buymeacoffee.com/atallgirlspodcast Subscribe to A Tall Girl's Newsletter: https://atallgirlspodcast.beehiiv.com/subscribeLet's stay connected: https://beacons.ai/atallgirlspodcast Leave a review and let me know how tall you are: https://atallgirlspodcast.com/reviews

Today's episode is actually inspired by a couple of TikTok videos I've seen recently. It started off with a tall girl video-ing herself what text on the screen saying “me at work” or something of that sort. Then it cuts to screenshots of people (stock images of course) with things that these people in the workplace have said to her because she's tall. So things like “Oh I wish I had your height” or “Why don't you play basketball?” and so forth lol I thought it was funny; I thought it was a joke so I kept scrolling. Then I came across ANOTHER video of a tall girl talking about how she was in a meeting for work and that the person said “Oh, you're taller than I expected”. And then I was like oh…so stuff like this happens for real lol?? Do people actually make comments about our height in professional settings? Now, the thing is I'm mainly remote. I'm a freelance marketer and I go into some type of office, professional setting like one day a week. And that's only been happening for a few weeks. So I can't really speak on the experiences of being a tall woman in the workplace. So I did what anyone else would do and took my inquiries to the Internet - aka Reddit and you guys lol. So I asked y'all on Instagram what your experiences have been like in the workplace as tall women. Because let's face it, people say that tall people tend to be more successful in their careers, get paid more, etc. And by tall people, they mean tall men. It plays a part in your health, the type of clothing you wear, the opportunities you receive, and even people's first impressions of you. Yup, I said it, it even affects people's first impressions of you. People will literally treat you a certain way because of your height and many tall women feel as though they're treated unfairly or even discriminated against because of their height, which leads us to the topic of discussion: is height discrimination even real? And how does it affect tall women?Fun fact, I was actually stuck on what to talk about this week, so I ran a poll over on Instagram. Some of the topics I was looking to discuss included social media being bad for tall girls, what it's like being a tall woman in the workplace, height discrimination, and the tall family who lied about their height. And the topic of height discrimination BARELY won, indicating that I got some good topics here :) Anyways, HEIGHT DISCRIMINATION. Height discrimination, or heightism, is essentially people being treated unfairly or unequally because of their height. This can look like bullying or microaggressions, rejection in dating solely on the basis of height, and even people's perceptions of you being affected in the workplace because of your height. It can even affect whether or not you get a job or promotion! So is height discrimination a real thing? And as a tall girl herself, she is hoping to do that for the tall girl community too! As a tall woman, styling can be challenging beyond just finding clothes that fit. Proportions play a huge role—tops that should hit at the waist may land too high, dresses might feel too short, and pants are often not long enough. Even when clothing is the right length, the way it drapes on a taller frame can be different from how it was designed to look. Oversized pieces can overwhelm, while certain cuts that flatter average heights may look unbalanced on our bodies. Accessories, like belts and shoes, also impact the overall look differently, requiring more thought into how to create cohesion. And then there's the societal pressure—tall women are often told to "tone down" their height, leading some to avoid heels or statement pieces that draw attention. Styling as a tall woman isn't just about putting together an outfit; it's about navigating proportions, confidence, and the limited options available in mainstream fashion. And our guest Christine is here to provide some expert advice about how tall women can dress to impress and feel good in their own skin through fashion! This episode is actually inspired by a few comments I've gotten on my socials over the past few weeks. If you don't follow me on my socials (like how dare you lol jk jk), I typically post podcast clips and commentary style vids so essentially much of my content is more commentary style in regard to tall women in society and so forth. Meaning that I often talk about the struggles we face. And there are two particular comments that stood out to me. One was under a TikTok video of me basically discussing how tall women aren't viewed as feminine and we try to overcompensate by hyper-feminizing ourselves and essentially acting in a way that just isn't natural to us. This person specifically commented that petite women are more feminine end of story and that I can't reason my way out of this AND I shouldn't try to convince men who don't like tall women to like them. And I'm like this video isn't even directed towards men nor did I even mention anything about a man lol. Chill out bruv. In another post (I was discussing how we hyper-feminize ourselves because people call us/see us as masculine), someone commented with a picture of a fake credit card with “victim card” on top of it. And I'm like Oh?? Haha ok???? I'm noticing a pattern here: people tend to dismiss our struggles, experiences, and insecurities.Anyways, so this does raise the question: are tall women's insecurities real? Why do people often dismiss them? It was supposed to go black on Sunday January 19, 2025 (when I'm recording this) but it left the premises literally the night before lol. We thought we had time to download everything that night but nope we don't. UPDATE: The app came back lol. The president-elect saved it. There are actually loads of problems with the app now though soooooo we'll see how that goes ://// Anyways, onto today's episode. Today we are talking about the masculine stereotype that tall women often face and how they try to overcompensate that by being hyperfeminine. Ok ok lol I know that was a lot to take in but I promise it'll make more sense as we get more into the episode. This was actually inspired by a Reddit post by a fellow tall girl. She claims that people have jokingly called her a man. She's tall, yes, but she also has an androgynous style, likes gaming and cars, and so forth. Though those are just part of who she is, she's felt the need to overcompensate with femininity. Sounds like something that happens to most of us, or at least to me for sure. I've talked various times on this podcast about how tall women are often seen as masculine. Why? Because height = masculinity. The taller a person is, the more likely someone will see them as masculine. Nothing new here. However, not all of us want to be perceived that way right? Because that does affect not only the way people treat us but also the people who choose to be around us, the people we attract. So some of us want to be perceived as feminine and feel the need to display hyperfeminine characteristics and behaviors. What do these behaviors and characteristics look like in tall women? Because let's face it, we aren't really educated on how to take care of our bodies. Or at least I wasn't. As a former athlete, she struggled with body image, especially because she was taller than all of the other girls around her. Between comparing herself to her teammates and seeing content from smaller fitness influencers on social media, she really wanted to shrink herself and her body leading to an unhealthy relationship with food. It wasn't until after college and after being an athlete that she realized that she is more than her weight and height and needs to treat her body with the care it deserves. And now she strives to help other tall women do the same. I will say with no bias that this was an extremely insightful episode. This episode is quite literally based on a video on TikTok. However, I can't insert a video here lol so in summary a tall, curvy/plus-sized creator was discussing how the tall girl influencer space is a mess because people only hype up tall skinny/thin influencers. Meanwhile, they don't do that for the tall plus-sized folks OR people often fetishize these tall curvy creators. But first, let's introduce exactly what the tall girl influencer space is. It's essentially a niche community of content creators on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube who represent and cater to tall women. They often share the joys, experiences, and struggles of being a tall girl as well as clothing tips/outfit inspo, dating, and how to navigate the world with confidence as a tall woman. Now, this space is very very niche, but we're often misrepresented or overlooked in mainstream media. Hence why, tall girl influencers/creators try to portray what it's truly like to be a tall woman. However, not all of their content is about being tall, but most of it is. Anyways, so what's the deal with people only hyping up tall thin women? Are tall curvy/plus-sized women more likely to be criticized both online and offline? Many people, both men and women, have been looking for ways to increase their strength and tone their bodies without putting so much stress on them that they feel very tired at the end of the day. And lowkey I've been there before lol. With the rise of the popularity of Pilates, especially with TikTok influencers, sometimes I question if Pilates is really worth it. Especially as a tall girl.Today I'm joined by certified tall girl Debi aka Tall Girl Pilates on Instagram. Debi is a Pilates and fitness instructor dedicated to helping tall women and women over 35 years old find wellness through fitness. She's certified through Balanced Body and holds an NPCP certification, which is the only National Pilates Certification Program out there. This advanced certification requires renewal every two years through continuing education, meaning she's always learning and growing—not just as an instructor, but as a person, too.As a tall girl, she's struggled with keeping up in fitness. She found it difficult to do certain exercises (like squats) as fast as her peers and to use machines that don't cater well to long limbs. I can understand why they'd think that because when you see models, they'd have long, thin limbs and often look taller than their counterparts or the people around them. Not only that, but many agencies wanted to cast tall women. As tall women, we're often told that we should model because of their height. Simple. Makes sense, right? WRONG. And she's not the only one. There was a whole slew of videos with tall people customizing and renovating their homes from raised countertops to higher cabinets to tall-friendly furniture. There were even tall friendly apartments with features that catered to tall people. But how much does this stuff cost? To raise your doorways, it can cost up to $1,000 per doorway. Raised countertops? Up to $3,000. Raise the height of your ceiling? Several THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS. And we haven't gotten to other specialized features like closets and tall friendly furniture. In this episode, we explore how expensive it can be to live and exist as a tall person. We have a very very special guest with us today: Judy Stewart from Trèsolz! Trèsolz is a brand that's on a mission to provide women with larger feet with stylish and affordable footwear options. Just like with having long legs, long arms, and a longer torso, having larger sized feet can make it very difficult to find shoes in the styles that we want in the size that we need. Bigger brands often go up to a size 10 or 11 and barely go past that, leaving women with feet in a size 12 and up struggling to find footwear options that work for them. The founder, Judy Stewart, faced this struggle herself. As a woman with a wide size 10.5 foot, she struggled with finding good quality, stylish shoes, often having to deal with frumpy, poor quality selections. And when she did find styles that she liked that were also good quality, the price was extremely high or the shoe itself was uncomfortable. After struggling for years, she decided to start Trèsolz and now helps other women across Canada and beyond feel beautiful in their shoes, no matter their size. Tune in to the full episode to learn more about Judy's journey to starting Trèsolz, why brands don't make extended sizes for tall women, how footwear affects your confidence, and more! **And don't forget to check Judy out on Dragons' Den (if you're in Canada on CBC) at 8 pm EST***Here are her deets: Website: https://tresolz.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tresolz/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@tresolz?_t=8XiIxMNxIH8&_r=1 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/tresolz X: https://x.com/tresolz

I looked it up on Google and AI suggestions said that ‘tall privilege' is essentially the advantages taller people may have over shorter people. It's often interchangeable with height privilege, height bias, etc. If you've heard of pretty privilege, it's similar to that just with height. Tall privilege can show up in different areas of life, but it seems to be a big thing in the dating world. We Need To Stop Calling Tall Women "Big"...

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 3, 2024 13:13

So for today's episode we are talking about tall women being called “big”, why that's an issue in my opinion, and how we as tall women can remain confident and remember that some people don't mean it in an insulting way. First and foremost, as a community, let's stop calling tall women “big”. To be honest, “big” and “tall” are 2 completely different things in my opinion. Let's just stick with “tall”, okay? It's fairly offensive to call a tall woman, or any woman for that matter, “big” and here's why: “Big” for a woman has a negative connotation to it in two ways. First, we're taught from a young age that we're supposed to be small, not seen, out of the way, and honestly just there when needed. So, when you have a tall girl, who already sticks out, feels out of place, and is ridiculed for something she naturally has (which is her height) and then you point out the fact that she's “bigger” than her peers, “bigger” than the people around her, how do you think she's gonna feel? If you said self-conscious, you're right. The second way is that “big” is often tied to the terms “fat” or “overweight”. I personally don't like using those terms because society has placed such a negative connotation with them, but because “big” is associated with such negative words, we're going to take it as an insult. And honestly I feel like this is something very very common for a tall plus sized woman. Why do people even call tall women “big” to begin with? How can we respond to those who call us “big”? I'm trying to update/upgrade my wardrobe and for real this time because I know I've been saying that for the ENTIRETY of this podcast, but we got our stuff figured out so we're doing it this time. Anyways, I went to Loft Outlet which is basically a store with last season's/last year's clothing items from the actual Loft store. I was looking around and looking at some items and then I stumbled upon the petite section. So I'm looking at this like okay….where is the tall section???Crickets. Nowhere to be found. And that's the issue with many brands. They will have the standard sizes of course but sometimes, they'll have a petite section in stores. And no tall section, which makes ZERO sense to me because it's like if you're gonna cater to one end of the height spectrum, why not cater to the other end as well? Anyways, the big question here is why don't big brands make clothing for tall women? Today we are talking about tall girl stereotypes. You know the comments like “Wow, you must play basketball!” or “Oh my gosh, you're so intimidating!” or “Are you a man?” That last one lowkey hit a lil different and not in a good way. But I'm sure that if you're a tall woman you have been stereotyped like this one way or the other. And this episode is for you! We're gonna be talking about the most common stereotypes of tall women as well as the issues and harsh truths about them. Because in some way, shape, or form, if you're a tall girl, these stereotypes have affected you whether it be confidence, self-image, etc. But first… What Is A Stereotype? A stereotype is a widely held yet oversimplified and generalized belief or idea about a particular group of people. So essentially, when you see a particular group or a person classified into a particular group, you make an assumption based on that classification. And this can be based on race, gender, profession, or even height. Often, whether good or bad, stereotypes are perpetuated by the media and pop culture. Tall Men vs. Short Men: Which Do Tall Women Prefer?

This has been an ongoing thing for who knows how many years. Time and time again, there are these public interviews where people are stopped in the streets—whether tall women, average-height women, or even men—and they're asked what their ideal height in a partner is. I'm assuming this is a way to gather some type of information as to which height is most attractive to people.I feel like a very common misconception is that all tall women inherently prefer tall men or view shorter men as less attractive or less capable. Is this the reality? We have a very special guest with us today: chiropractor and business owner Dr. David Lipman! Dr. Lipman is the owner of Physical Evidence Chiropractic. Since his youth, he's been very active and encourages others to be active as well. In his practice, he focuses on identifying the root causes of pain and treating them using a wide range of services. Today, our topic of discussion is posture, and we'll briefly discuss some of the root causes of pain related to our posture.Because, as tall people, one of our major struggles is posture, right? Whether it's our neck, back, shoulders, or even hips, poor posture can slowly but surely wreck our bodies. And for the most part, it's not even our fault! Sure, we may slouch over a computer often or sleep incorrectly. But our day-to-day lives also negatively impact our posture. Low sinks and counters. Low desks. Weird car seats. Chairs. Our short friends (no tea, no shade—still love y'all!!). It seems like we can't escape those pesky pains. In this episode, David dives deep into the importance of posture, the reason behind why people have certain types of pains and bodily issues because of their posture, and tips to offset these negative effects. The Dark Side of Tall Girl Fan Pages | How They Can Ruin The Confidence of Tall Women

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 22, 2024 17:24

Let's talk about tall girl fan pages! Lol, you're probably like 'what????????'Let's start with the basics: What Are Tall Girl Fan Pages?Tall girl fan pages are social media accounts that showcase and "celebrate" tall women—kinda. These accounts often feature images, videos, and stories of tall women, with height as the main point of attraction. While these pages might appear to provide a sense of community, they can also have a darker side, promoting objectification and unrealistic standards. These fan pages are prevalent across platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and even Flickr. Lol, do y'all remember Flickr? I'm telling you, when I was in middle school, Flickr was EVERYTHING. That and VSCO. If you weren't on those sites, you were not cool, lol.ANYWAYS, tall girl fan pages are scattered all over the Internet, and they tend to have a lot of common themes—primarily featuring extremely tall women. This often leads to the misconception that a woman has to be 6'4” and up to be considered tall. But that raises an important question: What is considered tall for a girl? In my opinion, it's not just limited to those who are 6'4” and taller. In this episode, I explore how tall girl fan pages can promote unrealistic standards of tall beauty and fuel unhealthy self-comparison. Also, what are these tall girl fan pages really for? Are they meant to support and celebrate tall women, or are they simply catering to the male gaze? I talk about this and more in the full episode!Subscribe to A Tall Girl's Newsletter: https://atallgirlspodcast.beehiiv.com/subscribeLet's stay connected: https://beacons.ai/atallgirlspodcast Leave a review and let me know how tall you are: https://atallgirlspodcast.com/reviewsLast week's episode - "Why The Internet Is A Scary Place for Tall Women": https://atallgirlspodcast.com/episode/why-the-internet-is-a-scary-place-for-tall-women

Hopefully this works out as intended… I'm actually very excited to do this because as tall girls, it's already hard enough to find clothes that fit our proportions, and when it comes to shoes, the struggle is even more real. Can I get a ‘hear, hear' if you agree? Let's face it, big brands are not moving at the pace we need them to move at even though they probably hear our constant cries. We got pants fitting like capris, dresses fitting like t-shirts, and shoes fitting like they're meant to fit as kid sizes. You can't tell me this isn't crazy. But we do have brands such as Etta Grove that are changing the game for us! Today, I'm partnering with Etta Grove, a size inclusive footwear and handbag brand selling shoes ranging from sizes 7-14, to give my full, open, and honest review about one of their products.
