E934 The Science of Negative Self-Talk: How It Affects Your Mind and Body

Tactical Living

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 26, 2025 11:00

In this episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosts Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton explore the science behind negative self-talk (Amazon Affiliate) and why it's far more than just words. Your brain listens to everything you tell it. The way you talk to yourself affects not only your mental resilience but also your physical health, stress levels, and decision-making. For first responders, where split-second decisions can mean life or death, negative self-talk isn't just a bad habit—it can be a dangerous liability. This episode dives into the real impact of negative self-talk on the brain and body, examples of how it manifests, and how to reframe your inner dialogue to be healthier, more productive, and ultimately, stronger. 1. Why Negative Self-Talk is More Than Just Words Your subconscious mind doesn't know the difference between truth and what you tell yourself repeatedly. Studies show that repeated negative thoughts create strong neural pathways that reinforce self-doubt, fear, and failure. For first responders, this can affect confidence, reaction time, and even long-term mental health. 2. The Psychological and Physical Effects of Negative Self-Talk 1. Increased Cortisol and Stress Response Example: Constantly telling yourself "I'm not good enough" puts your body in a state of stress, leading to higher cortisol levels. Physical Impact: Elevated cortisol contributes to high blood pressure, weight gain, fatigue, and even heart disease. 2. Impaired Decision-Making and Performance Example: Telling yourself "I always screw things up" before a high-pressure call increases hesitation and lowers confidence. Why It Matters: Self-doubt on the job can slow reaction times, decrease efficiency, and increase mistakes. 3. Mental Exhaustion and Burnout Example: Constant negative self-talk drains mental energy, leading to quicker burnout and emotional exhaustion. Why It Matters: First responders already face high levels of stress—adding negative self-talk compounds the problem. 4. Increased Risk of Anxiety and Depression Example: Repeating phrases like "I'm not strong enough" or "I can't handle this" rewires the brain to believe those statements. Why It Matters: Over time, this can lead to chronic anxiety, depression, and PTSD symptoms. 5. Lowered Immune Function and Physical Health Decline Example: Negative self-talk has been linked to weakened immune responses, making first responders more susceptible to illness and fatigue. Why It Matters: A weakened immune system means more sick days, slower recovery, and increased vulnerability in the field. 3. Reframing Negative Self-Talk: Turning It into a Strength 1. Identify and Challenge the Thought Example: Instead of saying "I can't handle this" → Ask yourself: Is that actually tru 2. Replace "Always" and "Never" Statements Example: Instead of "I always fail at this" → Avoid extreme language. Reframe: "I made a mistake, but I'm learning and improving every time." 3. Speak to Yourself Like a Friend or Teammate Example: You wouldn't tell your partner "You're a screw-up", so why say it to yourself? Reframe: "I did my best with what I had in the moment. Next time, I'll adjust and do better." 4. Use Actionable Affirmations Example: Instead of "I'm bad at de-escalating situations", change it to an action statement. Reframe: "I'm learning to stay calm and improve my communication skills every day." 5. Visualize Success Instead of Failure Example: Instead of mentally playing out worst-case scenarios, imagine yourself nailing that interview, handling that call with confidence, or succeeding in that challenge. Why It Works: The brain doesn't differentiate between real and imagined experiences—visualizing success increases confidence and actual performance. 4. How First Responders Can Build a Resilient Mindset Start small—negative self-talk is a habit, and breaking it takes time. Use "power phrases" that help shift your mindset ("I am capable, I am prepared, I am focused.") Surround yourself with positive influences—your work culture and personal circle matter. 5. Why This Matters: First responders face enough external stress without letting internal dialogue work against them. The way you talk to yourself determines how you show up on the job, at home, and in life. By identifying negative self-talk, reframing it into something constructive, and building resilience, you can take control of your mental and physical well-being—leading to better performance, better health, and a better life. Listen now to learn how to shift your self-talk and strengthen your mindset on and off duty!

When something goes wrong who's the first person to feel your wrath? If you're like most women, it's you. The viper tongue shows up with a barrage of ways you're not good enough and it's all your fault.  In this episode I talk about why we, as women, are so mean and full of self hate and how to switch the narrative learning to like (and hopefully even) love yourself. In this episode I confront the damaging societal influences that often lead us to undervalue ourselves, and I'll share practical steps to help you recognize your inherent worth. By challenging the negative self-talk that haunts many of us, we'll foster a kinder, more loving relationship with ourselves. This episode focuses on the deep-rooted struggle many we encounter when learning to love ourselves, particularly after a divorce. You'll come away from this episode:  • Understanding the psychological effects of societal expectations on women's self-worth • Identifying the "mean girl" voice that perpetuates self-hatred • Encouraging self-appreciation through daily lists of love and achievements • Emphasizing the importance of self-validation and recognizing intrinsic worth  If this podcast resonated with you in any way, please take a minute to follow and give me a rating wherever you listen to podcasts. To schedule your complimentary consult with Karin click here. For more information and full show notes go to:https://www.karinnelsoncoaching.com/post/ep199

Listen To Episode 701 As Josh Trent Answers Your Questions [01:40] What Is Self-Love? The question from the audience today is real special. This is a question from Matthew. Hey Josh, I love the podcast and I've been doing everything I possibly can to grow my Wellness pentagon, but I keep hitting up against this roadblock when it comes to loving myself and believing in myself. There's a long line of depression and emotional health issues in my family and I just want to escape the cycles of it all once and for all how and where do I begin? What a great question. What a vulnerable question. If you listen to the AMA 699 that we did, and if you haven't, make sure you do. We talked about the number one mindset shift that you must have in 2025 around your beliefs and your barometer. And we touched on this and I'm so happy that Matthew, you asked this question today because it is the deepest work we'll ever do. It is the most potent work we'll ever do to love ourselves. But how do we actually do it? Self-love is looked at as selfishness, especially from previous generations, where let's be honest, they didn't have the affluence, the time affluence, the financial affluence that we are afforded with, where we can actually dive in to know ourselves. It's pretty amazing. I mean, we're so blessed. We're so incredibly blessed to be able to even practice self-love. It's something our ancestors didn't necessarily ever get to do because they were just stuck in survival. Yet, Here's the paradox. In 2025, self-love isn't selfish, it's about transcending survival. And it's the ultimate power move. Let me ask you this. Do you feel guilty when you put yourself first? When you fill your own cup, Do you have feelings of guilt or shame or a narrative in your mind that says, I shouldn't put myself first? I should be taking care of everything and everyone else before I put myself first. Well, what if I told you that all successful people prioritize putting themselves first and they do it without shame, guilt, or blame. Well, in 2025 we're going to unpack why this is so important to put yourself first and also why the world 2025 will demand more from you than ever before and if you don't fill your own cup you'll have nothing left to give. So first let's define self-love. Self-love is the capacity, the awareness, and the consciousness to take care of yourself, nourish yourself so that you can do that same thing for others. That's essentially what I believe self-love is. It's the consciousness, capacity, and awareness to care for you in all the different ways of the Pentagon so that you can then give that gift of caring and loving to others. That's what self-love is. Self-love is not just bubble baths and candles, right? Self-love is about boundaries. It's about self-respect. It's about doing the inner work so you can actually the stigma that's been around for so long. This self-love has been labeled as this narcissistic or indulgent thing, but true self-love is actually the foundation for authentic relationships, career success, and mental health. Here's why. There are 3 key pillars for self-love... [14:15] Take Inspired Action Let's go into the actionable framework for 2025 that you can actually practice on a daily basis to become the best of you. The first one is having a morning ritual. It's a self-affirmation. It is a mantra. And the mantra I'd love for you to say is put your hands on your heart and say: I am worthy of the love I give to others. I am worthy of the love I give to others. Say it over and over and over again until you believe it. I am worthy of the love I give to others. Say it over and over and over again until you believe it. I am worthy of the love I give to others because, in that mantra, you're reinforcing on an unconscious basis that you're giving it to yourself. You can't give anything to anyone else that you don't hold, right? You can't give wisdom to someone else that you haven't earned. You may be able to regurgitate it, but people are gonna feel in their esoteric nervous system and in their enteric nervous system and in their unconscious nervous system, and their automatic nervous system, that it's just not true. In other words, we can tell when somebody hasn't embodied something that they're sharing. So even if it's wisdom given from a messenger, the wisdom won't land, the wisdom won't hit and be embodied unless the person themselves has done the work to embody it. Second practice, I want you to say no for 1 week. Say no for 1 week. Say no to anything or anyone for 1 week that drains your energy. Energy vampires can be acknowledged by just doing this simple practice. When you hang out with someone, or when you consume content, or when you do anything at all, does it drain your energy? Do you have less energy when you're done? Or do you have more? Say no for 1 week. Just 1 week. Give it a practice. Say no for 1 week to anything or anyone that drains your soul, that takes away your energy. Watch how this transforms your mindset. Number 3, tactical. Schedule time for you. Put yourself on your calendar. I have a color-coded calendar where I have business and family and self and in-studio and remote. I really like color-coding. This is a great strategy for you to do this. So put yourself on the calendar like a meeting can't cancel. Don't cancel on yourself. Use this time to charge yourself. Maybe it's cold plunge, maybe it's sauna, maybe it's walking. It's typically going to be, I'll share with you, it's typically going to be a physical practice. A lot of our world is sedentary. So nourish yourself with time on your that's color-coded so you can actually practice feeding you, feeding your body, feeding your heart and soul. Number 4, detox from comparison. In 2025, unfollow any accounts that make you feel less than, that make you feel like shit. There's no reason why you need to be following people or consuming content. Curate your digital space for inspiration, not insecurity. Have the awareness to know when something's making you insecure that you don't actually have to feed yourself with it. Just because you feel insecure about something means you have to keep banging your head against it till you feel secure. Security is an inside job, not an outside job. And number 5, in the tactical ways we can practice these skillsets, celebrate small wins. This is a big one for me. I've been so focused in my life on going to the next thing, going to the next thing, that I have lost track of celebrating my small wins. So for myself and everyone, keep a journal, like write in a journal where you're doing one thing that nourished you that day, one thing that you're proud of, celebrate it. It's not selfish. It's about transcending survival... Hi there,   This week, I taught self-love tools to my kids' Montessori class. Watching those little ones reminded me of the pure light and playfulness that still lives within each of us.   As adults, we often get caught up in responsibilities, challenges, and the pressure to be perfect and have it all together.   We've forgotten what “success” really means.   But deep down, that joyful, curious, and carefree child we once were is still there, waiting to be seen and heard.   In today's podcast we'll reconnect to your inner child and let your inner light shine.   Here are a few simple tips to honor your inner child this week:   1. Lighten Up: Take a break from your screen and notice the magic around you. Be present and enjoy the little things. 2. Be Kind to Yourself: Speak to yourself with love and kindness, just as you would to a child. 3. Follow Your Joy: Spend time doing activities that bring you joy and light you up. 4. Play and Be Curious: Allow yourself to be playful and curious. Try something new and have fun without an agenda.   Being a mom has really opened my eyes to how special children are. We too can be gentle, nurturing and loving to ourselves.   Here's to nurturing your inner light and joy, Namaste, Audrey   P.S. Listen to the full episode and let me know how you reconnect with your inner child!

Welcome, friends, to another episode of Thrive Beyond Size. Today's topic is inspired by a beautiful conversation my husband Rob and I had during a rare lunch date the other day. He told a story about how when he and his fellow firefighters drive the engine past an elementary school while the kids are outside, the kids all run to the fence grinning and laughing as the firefighters honk the horn and blast the sirens for them. Which makes the firefighters grin in turn. And that led us to the topic of joy. We as adults don't allow ourselves to delight in the small joys anymore and that's why I invited Kim Mosiman, an author and a coach, to the podcast to talk about spiritual and physical wellness and joy.Kim's new book, “Reflections of Joy”, is not a ‘how to' book, it doesn't offer diet or exercise plans, but instead, it's about loving herself and how she learned to do that. And it's about finding joy and enjoying it. Earlier in her career, Kim was a gym owner and for that, she achieved a certification from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition as well as Precision Nutrition One and Two. The gym was doing well but she closed it intentionally because her husband was retiring and she wanted to travel with him. But without the same drive, purpose, or schedule that she had when she owned a gym, she fell out of love with herself. Kim shares how she found her way back into loving herself, why she embraces the term body responsibility, how she notices little things every day that bring joy to her life, and why the routine of journaling honors her and sparks her creativity. I resonated with so much of what Kim and I talked about. Her wisdom around health, joy, and body responsibility is welcome in a world where we often don't let ourselves feel joy.__About Kim Mosiman:Kim Mosiman is a wife, mom, and loving grandma. As an author and coach, Kim specializes in empowering women embarking on their "second act."  She is a nutritionist, with certifications from Precision Nutrition and The Institute of Integrative Nutrition and a wellness coach. With her faith-driven approach and experience as a gym owner, Kim offers a unique blend of spiritual and physical wellness. Her book, "Reflections of Joy," provides practical, faith-infused strategies to inspire strength, beauty, and holistic growth in every aspect of life.__Learn more about Kim Mosiman:Website: KimMosimanWellness.comBook: “Reflections of Joy” by Kim MosimanInstagramFacebookPinterestLearn more about Dr. Michelle Tubman and Wayza Health:Website: www.wayzahealth.comFollow me on Facebook and InstagramEmail Michelle: michelle@wayzahealth.com

Embracing Imperfection- How to let go of perfection and imposter syndrome

Hey there,   I have a vulnerable share. I've struggled with perfectionism these past few years, and it's been so paralyzing that it's silenced my voice and my gifts as a teacher and coach.   In the online coaching world, the pressure to be flawless, to have all the answers and to be the expert has been overwhelming. Perfectionism has caused to show up inauthentically (hello imposter syndrome!) …or show up as a flat version of my personality… or worse - not show up at all!... only to be met with shame for not doing and being more.   Perfectionism is like a sneaky thief, robbing us of our joy and confidence.   But over these years of doing the self-love work on myself, I can tell you this: imperfection is where the magic happens. It's the portal to our True Self.   In Japanese culture, there's a concept called "wabi-sabi" – it's all about embracing imperfection as the essence of beauty in life. Think of it like the cracks in a piece of pottery making it even more beautiful and unique.   For me, my sensitivity has always been a flaw and weakness, but not I can see that my sensitivity IS my gift – it's literally how I connect with my community and how I heal others.   So when that Itty-Bitty-Shitty-Committee starts to rear its head, remember this: Notice, Pause, Choose: Notice: Recognize that criticizing voice. Pause: Take a deep breath and come back to the present moment. Choose: opt for a thought that lifts you up and reminds you of your worth.   And remember, your imperfections are your superpowers. Also, I've been using this mantra for myself and I've felt it's power. I hope it helps you return to yours too!    "I embrace all of me and I am needed in this world."   I hope today's soul note helps you break free from trying to please others or feel like an imposter and remember your gifts that only you have and gives you the courage to step into them and share them with the world!   Much love, Audrey   p.s. if you need personalize coaching, I'm here to help you deepen your self-love and connect to your intuition to create the life you love.

Welcome to another thought-provoking episode of the Self-Aware Leader podcast, where we delve into the depths of our emotions, and explore how understanding ourselves can help us become better leaders and human beings. In this episode, we discuss a fundamental aspect of our lives: love and the right to give and receive it. It's natural for human beings to crave love and connection. However, some people may struggle with giving or receiving affection, being hugged, or experiencing deep emotions. If you're one of those people, you may unconsciously believe that you're undeserving of love. In this episode, we explore the reasons behind these emotional barriers and how to break through them to embrace love wholeheartedly. The Emotional Barriers to Love: Past Trauma or Negative Experiences: Our past experiences, particularly any form of trauma or emotional abuse, can have a significant impact on our ability to give and receive love. These experiences may have led us to associate love and affection with pain or disappointment, making us hesitant to engage in such emotions again. Fear of Vulnerability: Opening up to love requires us to be vulnerable, which can be frightening for some. The fear of vulnerability may stem from a fear of being hurt, rejected, or judged. This fear may hold us back from fully embracing love and affection, as we put up barriers to protect ourselves from potential emotional pain. Low Self-Worth: Our sense of self-worth plays a crucial role in our ability to give and receive love. If we believe that we're undeserving of love or affection, we may unconsciously push it away. It's important to acknowledge and work on improving our self-worth to truly embrace love in our lives. Breaking Through Emotional Barriers: Self-Reflection and Awareness: The first step to breaking through emotional barriers is self-reflection. Take the time to explore your feelings and emotions, and identify the root cause of your resistance to love and affection. Acknowledge and accept your feelings, and be open to understanding and working through them. Seek Professional Help: If you're struggling to break through your emotional barriers on your own, seeking professional help from a therapist or counselor can be a valuable resource. They can provide guidance, support, and the necessary tools to help you work through your feelings and develop healthier emotional patterns. Practice Self-Compassion and Empathy: As you work on breaking through your emotional barriers, it's essential to practice self-compassion and empathy. Understand that healing and growth are a process, and it's okay to stumble along the way. Treat yourself with kindness and patience, and extend that same compassion and empathy to others as well. Develop Trusting Relationships: Building strong, trusting relationships with friends, family, and romantic partners can help you feel more comfortable with love and affection. By surrounding yourself with supportive and loving individuals, you'll begin to feel safer and more secure in your ability to give and receive love. Conclusion: Embracing love and affection in our lives is a vital part of our emotional well-being and overall happiness. By identifying and working through our emotional barriers, we can learn to love wholeheartedly and become more self-aware, compassionate leaders. Remember, as a human being, you have the right to love and be loved. Don't let your emotional barriers hold you back from experiencing the fullness of love that life has to offer.

The Second Phase Podcast - Personal Branding & Brand Marketing and Life Strategies for Success for Female Entrepreneurs

Your inner critic often makes it challenging to love yourself. But finding self-love is possible. Follow these 4-steps to silencing your inner critic and take a journey to find self-love that will transform your life. If your inner critic has overwhelmed you with negative thoughts, it's time to take a journey to find self-love. The journey to find self-love has many advantages When we find love for ourselves, we can better serve others. The Bible tells us to love others as we love ourselves, it doesn't say love others instead of ourselves. If we don't quiet our inner critic, the critic voice will stop us from doing what we are called to do to make a difference in the world. We are to love others as we love ourselves, but as Paul gently reminds us in Philippians 2:3, we are to be humble and value others above ourselves. So yes, self-love, self-respect, and honoring our bodies and minds, is important and right, but we are to do so by loving God first, and respecting and honoring others above ourselves. Self-Marriage as part of the journey to find self-love Erin's journey to find self-love began when she went to a festival and discovered the concept of self-marriage. Self-marriage is the concept that you are always there for yourself. She identified what she was looking for in a partner, someone to make her feel smart and beautiful, and there she learned that she could do this for herself. Through self-marriage, she committed to doing this for herself throughout the rest of her life. Until this point, Erin had been looking for a guy that would make her feel smart and pretty. She thought that if she found that guy, she'd be able to go out into the world and be her full self. The self-marriage experience was a turning point for her, that she could do this for herself. After this experience, Erin when to medical school to become a naturopathic physician. What is a naturopathic physician? Naturopathic physicians are trained to be primary care physicians. Toward the end of Erin's school journey, she discovered mind-body medicine. She decided to work in this area to help people find their mental-emotional issues so people could heal from their physical ailments. Erin worked in private practice doing mind-body healing for a while. She loved the deep work. Her work involved helping women discover that they were whole and complete as is. During Covid, Erin decided to take her business online. Her focus became self-love. The experience of teaching classes on self-love since 2009 came into play to help her build her online business. In a nutshell, Erin helps women feel comfortable and confident in their own lives. Our thoughts create our results Robyn emphasized that we, as women, experience so many things in our lives, traumas, relationships, etc. that lead to inner criticism. We know that our thoughts create our results. Our thoughts influence our emotions and feelings which in turn influence our actions, inaction, and behaviors. If you aren't working on your mindset, you will delay your ability to make progress in life or business. Likewise, you may not be able to discover true joy, hope, peace, and purpose. The inner critic and the entrepreneur's journey to find self-love One hundred percent of people have an inner critic, including the most successful people. Erin's first step to self-love is self-kindness. Self-kindness is the first step to managing the inner critic. Erin emphasized that self-love is a continual learning practice and development process. She doesn't consider herself to be an expert in self-love as she is still learning. One of the most common ways the inner critic shows up for entrepreneurs is through perceived failures. Failed launches, flopped reels, fear of going live or showing your face, comparison of other people you run into on your journey. The inner critic can stop you in your tracks. The question of why her, not me, can really drag a person down. If your inner critic is saying someone else is doing it better, then it is important to realize that there is a reason they are ahead of you. Instead of criticizing yourself, dive into how you can change your scenario to achieve your goals. For example, maybe the other person is posting on social media consistently and you are in an anxiety tunnel. Or, that person has been at it for 10 years and you are only 2 years into the journey. However, as easy as this sounds, the inner critic is irrational. Therefore, it is necessary to do the inner work. The 4 steps to quieting your inner critic on the journey to find self-love. Get to know your inner critic - the voice that rails on you because she is trying to protect you. Give her a name. Write down what your inner critic is saying - get it out of your head and onto paper. This will help detach from your inner critic so that it won't erode your heart and spirit. Identify where your inner critic is coming from, what is she trying to protect you from? There are two places where the inner critic comes from, growing up and experiencing childhood wounds and societal standards. The inner critic comes from a part of you that was wounded and hurt. She thinks there is something wrong with you, but there isn't, and you are worthy of love. Ask yourself, what wounded part of you is the inner critic trying to protect? Where is the place of worth that the inner critic is trying to get you back to? Recognize and release your inner critic. Tell her that you love her but that she is wrong. Explain to her that you don't have to do anymore to be loved. Don't ignore her, acknowledge her, and tell her that you release her and that you can take it from here. Our brains are 2/3 more likely to believe something negative than positive and look for something negative 2/3's more often than positive. It is part of life whether you are successful or not. This is often daily work. Replace your inner critic. This is the time to introduce a self-kindness practice. Train your body to be kind as a habit. The inner critic is the primary obstacle to being kind to yourself. Now that you can identify, acknowledge, and release your inner critic, you can create an environment where she won't thrive, an environment of kindness. The Undercover Kindness Tool to use on the journey to find self-love It is called undercover kindness because no one knows what you are doing. Your inner critic is the number one obstacle to you being kind to yourself. Now that you've identified and released your inner critic, you can create an environment of self-kindness where your inner critic cannot thrive. This is a way to train your internal environment to be kind to yourself. There are three parts to undercover kindness on your journey to find self-love. Breath Do this activity during a mundane moment in your everyday life. Erin recommends doing this when washing your hands or at times that are neutral and not stressful. Imagine every breath is a droplet of kindness. Send the breath to your body. Body Hold your body in a loving way. Check in with your body as you breathe. Where is the there tension? What part of your body can you relax or stretch? Words A kind inner dialogue with yourself. It will feel awkward but push through. Give yourself a pep talk. Congratulate yourself on doing a good job today, etc. Then, tell yourself that you love yourself. Look at yourself in the mirror and save it. Over time, this practice will become more natural and comfortable. Self-kindness is a practice, not something woo, but training your mind to be kind to yourself. This exercise will change how you. When you transform yourself by quieting your inner critic and changing your inner dialogue, you are more able to have strong relationships with others, you are less irritable and less reactionary. The more you love yourself the more you will accept love from others and the love from God. In addition, loving yourself will help you feel worthy of the love of God and others. Bible verses referenced in the episode Matthew 22:39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself. Mark 12:31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.'There is no commandment greater than these.” James 2:8 If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing right. Philippians 2:3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves. Hebrews 13:5 “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.'” Remember, God loves you unconditionally. When you are battling with your inner critique, pray, fall into your faith, and be reminded of how much God loves you.
