If you're a tall person listening to this right now, I'm sure you understand the feeling of constantly being around shorter people, whether it's growing up with shorter friends and classmates, working in an environment of mainly shorter coworkers, or finding that many of your family members are shorter. Now, that's not a bad thing, but it can certainly make us feel like the odd one out or insecure at times. But with the rise of tall specific groups and events, there are various opportunities to not feel that way. Today, I am joined by a founder of one of these groups. Sometimes, being tall can feel lonely. It's funny because sometimes I think about the phrase “It's lonely at the top.” I know it's typically used to talk about getting rich and all of that stuff. But today I mean it very literally. The truth is, the taller you are, the less likely you are to find people around your height, which can make many tall folks feel out of place and like they don't belong. And this kinda led to the rise of tall clubs and tall meetups, where tall people can come together and connect. The Tall Tour was a perfect example of this. And another example is No I don't Play Basketball, a brand whose mission includes connecting tall people with each other through in-person events. I stumbled across a bunch of home renovation videos on TikTok the other day and this app knows me so well that it showed me a video of a tall family customizing their own home. Like from scratch. In the video, they literally had a picture of them sitting in front of the wood structure of their home. Their home consisted of raised countertops, 8-foot doorways, 10-foot ceilings, etc. and this creator in particular documented her whole journey of creating her tall friendly home. And she's not the only one. There was a whole slew of videos with tall people customizing and renovating their homes from raised countertops to higher cabinets to tall-friendly furniture. There were even tall friendly apartments with features that catered to tall people. But how much does this stuff cost? To raise your doorways, it can cost up to $1,000 per doorway. Raised countertops? Up to $3,000. Raise the height of your ceiling? Several THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS. So apparently, there are people who think that tall people are privileged? Like there's a term called ‘tall privilege'. I guess I'm not tall enough to know what it is since it's the first time I'm hearing about this. Since it's my first time and it may be your first time, we're learning this together. I looked it up on Google and AI suggestions said that ‘tall privilege' is essentially the advantages taller people may have over shorter people. It's often interchangeable with height privilege, height bias, etc. If you've heard of pretty privilege, it's similar to that just with height. Tall privilege can show up in different areas of life, but it seems to be a big thing in the dating world. Scrolling through TikTok, videos really highlight this in that they tend to claim that men often get more attention and more choices in the dating world if they're on the taller side. So how does tall privilege affect tall people?
