Drum roll, please… we are so excited to share this inspiring conversation with Michelle Cassandra Johnson and Tema Okun. From the very beginning of this podcast, we've named Michelle's work throughout and, of course, our longtime listeners will also recall our early interview with Michelle on episode 5 (linked below). Since that initial conversation, we've dreamt of having Michelle back on with her dear friend and colleague, Tema Okun. You might know Tema's name from the now-somewhat-famous-in-certain-circles resource, the Characteristics of White Supremacy Culture article (also linked below)—for many, a guiding document outlining the insidious ways white supremacy shows up in our cultural narratives, practices, and norms. Tema's work has been pivotal, for decades, and recently gained increased attention amidst the BLM uprising of 2020. As many white folks “go back to sleep” in the aftermath of that uprising, Tema's role as a decades-long facilitator of anti-racism work models something significant: what it looks like for white folks to show up over and over again, over long periods of time, and the practice of centering love, compassion, and humanity in our efforts to challenge and dismantle systemic and cultural racism. This conversation is an invitation to do just that—to stay in relationship, to understand our roles, and to work across lines of difference to create collective liberation.Tune in, ya'll.Tema and Michelle discuss…- Visions for the future of this work and reflections on its evolution- The importance of not leaving anyone behind- What it looks like for white folks to get out of the way- Challenging individualism and ego- The complexities of lineages, legacies, and accreditation in social justice praxis- Cross-difference relationship- Boundaries as a form of self and collective-care…and so much more…Connect with Michelle & Tema:Michelle's websiteMichelle's InstagramJoin Michelle on PatreonTema's websiteTema's InstagramTema's book, The Emperor Has No Clothes: Teaching About Race And Racism To People Who Don't Want To KnowResources Mentioned:ALL THE F*CK IN Episode 5: Remembering to Dream with Michelle C. This is a vulnerable episode for us. Tristan and Lauren have felt a pull to speak frankly about coercive, cult-y dynamics in the coaching, wellness, and "self-improvement" industries (and beyond), especially since mind control tactics commonly deployed in these spaces not only cause incredible harm, but contribute to upholding capitalism, white supremacy, cis-hetero-patriarchy, and other toxic systems. Our friend Tatum Fjerstad (she/her) joined us for this nuanced conversation, and was so generous with sharing about her recovery from spiritual abuse, multi-level marketing companies (MLMs), and how, in her words, "We are all capable of harm and we are all capable of being harmed."Tune in to hear us talk about...The spectrum of cult-y behavior (whether a group is a "cult" isn't as black-and-white as we've been taught)How coercive control works, and how pervasive it isHow MLMs deploy cult-y tactics to exploit members and teach them to exploit others for profitThe common threads between Tatum's Christian upbringing and the spaces she found herself in as an adultHow her anti-racism practice supported Tatum's awakening to the toxicity of other spacesThe complexities of recovering from coercive control and other forms of abuse, particularly when we carry shame for having been conditioned to harm othersHow we're each healing, practicing self-compassion, and making amends…and more!Connect with Tatum:Tatum's InstagramGet Tatum's newsletterUpcoming move sit write workshops with TatumBook acupuncture with Tatum (Minneapolis)People and organizations mentioned in this episode:Tatum's open letter to Elena BrowerConspirituality podcast about doTERRA and Elena BrowerCultish: The Language of FanaticismA Little Bit Culty PodcastSteven Hassan's BITE Model of Authoritarian ControlThe Cult of Multi-Level Marketing (Sounds Like a Cult Podcast)Reclamation CollectiveLayla SaadJacoby BallardYou can support this podcast by joining us on Patreon! She gets real. In a dominant culture that teaches so many of us to stay small, to compartmentalize, and to keep our emotional experiences to ourselves, Kelley's realness is an invitation to subvert the systems that tell us who we are so that we can discover our own innate truths. Welcome to ALL THE F*CK IN, a podcast from two entrepreneurs, Tristan Katz (they/them) and Lauren Roberts (she/her), about showing up for social justice in your work.In our first ever episode, we share our vision for this podcast and how we got started in this work together. This isn't your typical capitalist-focused, entrepreneurial business podcast. (There are already plenty of those.)We're here because we've been craving voices rooted in activism, justice, and INTEGRITY with those values. These are conversations about all things business and entrepreneurship—from a radical perspective that says we don't have to choose between social justice values and being successful in our work. This won't be a place where we claim to have all the answers. Our intention is to offer guidance and support while also encouraging our listeners to discover and live into more questions. We believe these conversations require ongoing practice and a consistent dedication to unlearning. If you're ready to go all the f*ck in on what matters most while creating an abundant life, you're in the right place.A note on content: Self-care is radical and non-negotiable in the work of justice AND entrepreneurship.
