So, what is personal agency?  According to Shaun Gallagher and his work on philosophical conceptions of the self, personal agency refers to, “the sense that I am the one who is causing or generating an action.” This means that a person with a sense of agency perceives themselves as the subject influencing their own actions and life circumstances. A couple of years ago, I had the chance to do a three-day Trauma-Informed Practice Intensive for Coaches and Leaders. One of the things we kept coming back to over the course of these three days was making sure we, as coaches and leaders, are creating spaces that allow our clients a strong sense of agency.   As we dug into this from various angles and examined it through the lens of trauma, I got more and more curious and started doing my own research on the side. I know, super nerd alert. I love geeking out on this stuff. While I won't bore you with the super coachy stuff, I do want to share with you the juicy parts that I know have the potential to benefit you right away.  One of the best parts of my job is providing you with tools to see your own power and your own ability to make choices that serve you. I want you to feel confident in your own sense of self and sense of agency that guides your decision-making and action-taking. In this Greatest Hits episode, I dig into: What personal agency is and what it can mean for you Why is a sense of agency important 6 ways to develop your sense of agency It is my hope that developing your sense of agency will give you clarity and discernment around who you are and who you are becoming, and that, in turn, will impact how you show up and have impact in the world.   Links mentioned: Trudi Lebron: trudilebron.com Article: https://www.mindful.org/seven-ways-to-develop-personal-agency/ Learn more about your ad choices. Hill, Trudi Lebron and many others, to bring you the very best advice, insights and tools we can offer to help you scale with integrity.   In fact, this podcast interview is a beautiful preview to some of what you're going to learn at the Disruptive Scale Summit, which gets right to the heart of how to make more money, save time and change more lives, while staying true to your values around personal and collective liberation. On the podcast, Brigette addresses how to sell your offers consensually, whereby a prospective client is guided through your free introductory event and into a sales conversation with transparency. She breaks down what kind of events and how to run events so that they lead to sales conversations where the prospective client already has most of what they need to make a decision. She describes in detail the many ways you can build social impact initiatives and activism into your business (AND make money), because at the heart of this conversation is also how we as spiritual and conscious healers and helpers sometimes recreate systems of oppression by undercharging for our services.  You won't want to miss her holy rant about the important difference between millionaires and billionaires! Stepping from a nonprofit career trajectory into a for-profit consulting practice required some adjustment on the part of my guest on this episode of What the Fundraising. Trudi Lebron had to recalibrate in some unexpected and liberating ways, changing outmoded practices that are now helping her change our world. Today Trudi Lebron Impact Coaching serves a wide variety of leaders looking to get beyond old, harmful power structures and processes that have shaped the corporate and service sectors. She and her team are disrupting entrenched systems, the default to a “normal” that has for centuries marginalized people based on color, gender, and class. This work requires sustained, intentional, and fearless education and Trudi is here to walk us through the fundamentals. In this episode we get to hear a lot of details of Trudi's experience in the nonprofit sector, and what it was like to transition into running a successful consulting business. We talk about why equity-centered coaching is so critical - recognizing that coaching generally defaults to a version of success that is biased and based on a normative model that defers to white, colonial, patriarchal standards. To move out of this, we need to redefine what success looks like in a number of ways, including how we track it and what metrics we truly value. We go deep in this conversation into the broken nature of nonprofit funding and how the system is set up in a way that often diverts the executive directors from their organizations' core mission into a never-ending fundraising role and distracts from the organization's primary focus and mandate. Throughout the episode, Trudi gives so much advice for nonprofits that want to break the cycle of white supremacy in the service sector. You'll come away from this conversation with plenty to contemplate and new perspectives to consider. Listen now to learn about how this work intersects with your organization's leadership and how you can shift your practices now! After this episode, click here to learn more about and purchase Trudi's new book, "The Antiracist Business Book: An Equity Centered Approach to Work, Wealth and Leadership." Leaders have a difficult job when it comes to leading on DEI, are you equipped for challenging conversations to arise, do you have enough knowledge yourself and do you have the answers?  A leader's job is to build and maintain cultures that value difference because this is what it means to lead. Valuing difference is a practice. Anti-racisim, anti-ableisms, classims, sexisim and homophobia are all practices. Educational programs, workplace training, books, podcasts and courses are all resources that we can use to build our muscle when it comes to valuing difference. There is no end to this work, because this is how workplaces need to work. When we don't treat DEI as a practice, we don't engage in the action necessary to truly create workplace cultures that value difference. In the book How to be an Antiracist, Dr Ibram X. Kendi says that ““racist” and “antiracist” are like peelable name tags that are placed and replaced based on what someone is doing or not doing, supporting or expressing in each moment. These are not permanent tattoos. No one becomes a racist or antiracist. We can only strive to be one or the other.”  What can we do within our organizations to strive towards antiracism? To help us with that question Trudi Lebron, author of The Antiracist Business Book: An Equity Centered Approach to Work, Wealth, and Leadership, will be joining us on the show today to discuss how organizations can make anti-racism a fundamental way of working.    www.trudilebron.com The Antiracist Business Book @trudilebron

Today, I'm talking with Business Strategist and life enthusiast Sarah Cook. Sarah was one of my coaches when I was in Trudi Lebron's Amplified Impact Mastermind this year. During our time together, I came to respect Sarah's perspective on equity, the coaching industry, and how we can do better. I reached out to her because lately, I've been wrestling with my training as a coach. In hindsight, one of the programs focused a lot on building a business, but not so much on being a better coach. There I learned practices that aren't really aligned with my values. After trying hard to make them work for me, I got burned out. Now I'm creating a workflow and coaching style that feels right for me. The coaching industry has a dark side and one I don't want to perpetuate. One that tends to prioritize profit for coaches over clients' experiences. One that views mindset as the only barrier to growth, and overlooks the lived experiences of people who hold identities different than the dominant culture. As with most growth opportunities, I'm having to look at my part in all this. While I may never be free of my insecurities and biases, I am committed to noticing them and making changes for myself and my clients. We'd love to know what you have to add to this conversation. Have you ever felt like your profession or work culture wasn't aligned with your values? How did that affect you? What did you do? About Sarah: Sarah Cook is a business strategist who loves helping entrepreneurs build their businesses in unique and effective ways by implementing strategies that make sense for their values, strengths, impact, and personal goals. Sarah resides in the beautiful state of Maine. She is an avid hiker, loves art, and daily dance parties. Resources: Business for Social Change: Trudi LeBron https://trudilebron.com/

Not surprised of course, but we could see through the thin veil of pretending to give a shit about melanated folks' lives bc it was profitable. How does being an equity-centered leader sound to you? In this age there is a lot of talk (an therefore a lot of confusion!) about the relationship between DEI - Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Anti-racism, Social Justice, Collective Liberation, how all of these things work together, and how to integrate them into your leadership. That's why it's important to have an experienced pro explain the nuances of what is behind people's beliefs, their behaviors, and how social structures develop. To enlighten us around all things equity-centered, we welcome returning guest Trudi Lebron. Trudi is a coach and consultant for people who want to step into their leadership potential by prioritizing equity. In this episode, Trudi reveals how leaders of all kinds can learn and use real antiracism practices as more than just a DEI statement.   We got into how businesses actually treat people while often marketing diversity as a branding move and how organizations need to put real work into assessing and confronting how they uphold oppressive systems.   We also discuss how antiracism is a collection of behaviors, policies, and self-reflection.  It's hard, it's healing, and it's the only way to move forward.  Listen to episode 363 now! In episode 363 of the Embodied Podcast we discuss: [7:15] One must be tuned into the social climate around imbalance of power and exploitation of people with marginalized identities. [20:00] Elizabeth and Trudi discuss callouts, policing, and interrogating yourself. [22:30] Where keeping it real goes wrong.  [26:00] People exploring their real-life biases with discussion and practice.  [28:45] On using shame as a teaching tool.  [45:30] How to identify one's privilege and how to leverage it instead of exploiting it. [58:00] The real nature of accountability.   [1:09:00] Equity as social evolution and the only way to run a sustainable operation.   For full show notes and resources, head tohttps://untameyourself.com/podcasts/363 About the EMBODIED Podcast with Elizabeth DiAlto  Since 2013 I've been developing a body of work that helps women embody self love, healing and wholeness. We do this by focusing on the four levels of consciousness - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. In practical terms this looks like exploring tools and practices to help you  tune into the deep wisdom of the body and the knowing of the heart, which I believe are gateways to our souls. Then we cultivate a new relationship with our minds that allows the mind to serve this wisdom and knowing and soul connection, rather than override it, which is what many of us were taught. If you've been doing self help or spiritual development work for a while, these are the types of foundational things that often people overlook in pursuit of fancier concepts that often aren't practical or sustainable. Here, we will focus on building these strong foundations so you can honestly and thoroughly embody self love. Why are people so afraid of being anti-racist? How can that be the case when it is something that so many of us desire to do? This is the question we explore deeply on The Priestess Podcast today with my guest diversity, equity and inclusion coach Trudi Lebron. You are about to dive into fear, failure, perfectionism, white supremacy, oppressive systems, busting out of the good girl persona and learning to be accepting of discomfort and getting things wrong. It's only when we do so that we can hope to address our own bias, embrace matters of social justice as a part of our spiritual path  and create the world we all long for. A world that is steeped in humanity, inclusion and equity for all.

Whether you’re a coach, consultant, or any other type of small business leader, building a business that is striving towards anti-racism and prioritizes Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) is of utmost importance in 2021. We need to question how our standard business practices are perpetuating systems that no longer serve us.   It’s not just something you do once, but a daily practice that you commit to long-term. While the work isn’t easy or simple, DEI is vital to creating and maintaining a successful workplace; one founded on the principle that all people can thrive personally and professionally.   My guest today, Trudi Lebron, PhD (ABD), is a diversity, equity and inclusion coach who teaches individuals and institutions how to build successful, anti-racist businesses. In the past seven years, she has grown her company, Scriptflip, into a multi-six figure machine for helping others maximize their social impact.   Trudi is the host of the Business Remixed Podcast, has been featured in Forbes and was recognized as one of the Hartford Business Journal 40 Under 40 Leaders in 2016. She lives in Hartford with her two children.   What you’ll learn in this episode:   What DEI (Diversity Equity and Inclusion) actually means What a “default business culture” is and how it can crush your business How to navigate hiring, salaries, and company culture through the lens of DEI What matters the most in anti-racist practices, and how to do this in a genuine – not performative – way Where most people fall short with their DEI work   Subscribe and Review   Thanks so much for joining me this week. How inclusive is the business you're building?    This is a question every entrepreneur should ask themselves – in today's world more than ever. Diversity, anti-racism and equality are ethical issues that affect how we do business every day.    The guiding principle on which I built my business is gender equality, and I was so excited to speak to Trudi Lebron, a diversity, equity and inclusion coach, whose work I truly admire.    Trudi is bi-racial and has been interested in topics like inclusion, equality and belonging all her life. When she started to explore the online coaching industry, she realised how very white that world was and decided to do something about it. Today, she teaches entrepreneurs how to embrace anti-racism and achieve diversity with their business.    In this episode, Trudi explains why your values should never be separated from your business, what entrepreneurs in Europe can do to achieve diversity and participate in the anti-racism discussion, and how the events of last year changed her business   Inclusive change and prioritizing impact is coming to entrepreneurship. If you want to know what you can do to support equality and diversity with your business, don't miss out on Trudi's helpful and valuable advice.    “Our businesses have to be a reflection of the world we want to build.” - Trudi Lebron   Are you more of a reader? Scroll down to discover what you can do to embrace anti-racism and diversity in your business.  In this Episode of The Sigrun Show: How Trudi became a diversity and equity coach and made anti-racism her topic (3:50) How last year changed Trudi's business (10:20)  Why your values should never be separated from your business (14:01)  How entrepreneurs in Europe can achieve diversity with their business (21:18) How to bring forward the anti-racism discussion in entrepreneurship (25:05) The shift the coaching world has gone through in regards to equity (32:17) Black History Month - what you can do (35:05)   For more inspiration, discover my take on speaking up vs. staying silent when it comes to Black Lives Matter, or why you should speak your mind even if your voice shakes.  How You Can Support Anti-Racism, Diversity and Equality with Your Business   Just like sustainability, diversity, anti-racism and equality are ethical issues that have become priorities for many businesses over the last years.    Having people of colour on your team or as your clients is great, but it's not the only way to achieve diversity. Diversity is about much more: Age, language, background, and diverse perspectives, among others. It's about how people are included and their experience when they come into your space.    If you feel a pull towards wanting to support anti-racism, equality and diversity with your business, Trudi recommends starting with a personal journey.    Think about what you know of racism, discrimination, and all the ways people have been oppressed over time. Get clear on why we have the conditions we do in the world.  Understand your own identity and where specific biases towards other identities come from. What groups of people are immigrants in your country, and why did they come there? What is their experience like? Get a local context of how racism manifests where you come from.  Come to a conclusion around what your values are and what you're committed to, and how you can tie these values to your business.  Look at your own behaviour in business. Do you only have white clients? Do you only listen to white mentors? Do you only subscribe to podcasts of white people? Seek to diversify and listen to people who come from a variety of backgrounds.    You don't have to be a hard-core, full-time activist to do your part in making things better. But if you care, if you want to be in better relationships with humans, if you want your business to be inclusive and impactful, choose to participate in this conversation.    Are you taking a stand with your business on ethical issues like racism, equality and diversity? If yes, I'd love to hear how! You can follow, connect and share with me on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.  Have you signed up for my masterclass: Lessons from a 7 Figure Launch yet?    After launching my signature program SOMBA Kickstart in January and making over $1M, I want to share with you exactly how I did it.    I'll let you in on my most valuable lessons and the strategies that had the biggest impact - so that you can use them to master your own launches.    Sign up for the masterclass here.  Connect with Trudi Lebron: Trudi Lebron Trudi's Mastermind Did you like this episode? Closing out Speaking to What Matters: Conversations on Messaging for a More Just World, here is my personal debrief with specific aha moments and learnings I took away from each leader about how to show up for social justice in your messaging. Listen in. A Few Takeaways: You can’t slap up new inclusive messaging on your website and expect more diverse clients to come. Messaging is the end point after you’ve done the internal work and learning. (Hat tip to convos with Cher Hale and Trudi Lebron.) Be discerning. There’s no formula for knowing when to pass the mic / when to speak up / what to say / how to do any of this. (HT Erica Courdae and Nisha Moodley.) Be really clear, specific and explicit about who your work is for. More words vs collapsing people into narrow labels for the sake of tidy marketing. (HT Kelly Diels and Trudi Lebron.) Slow down. Harm often happens when we’re moving so fast and not taking time to be intentional and present and see the actual humans in front of us. (HT Tamala Poljak, Nisha Moodley, and Trudi Lebron.) Values-based marketing is when you attract people who don’t just have the problem you solve but who share the same values. (HT Trudi Lebron and Kelly Diels.) It’s not about being an “expert,” it’s about being a leader. And being a leader is more about how you show up than about doing it perfectly or right. (HT Nisha Moodley, Tamala Poljak and Erica Courdae.)   Deeper support from me: What’s your Messenger Archetype? Take the quiz. Hey everyone! How are you doing? For real! Tell me! I just want you to know how grateful I am for each of you in here. I've intentionally been quiet online so I could listen, learn and do better when it comes to racial injustice. I had planned to launch Conversion Design School™ last week, but 4 days before cart open, I stopped working on my launch because a more important conversation needed to be had. Just like business, the fight against racial injustice is a long-term game, and I'm committed to doing better. Here are a few more resources I've come across the last week: The Show up & Serve workshop replay from Trudi Lebron is only $97, and I highly recommend it: https://www.trudilebron.com/emergencyworkshop Vanessa Velez from Clarity is Crucial. She did a training inside a mastermind I'm in. The conversation was so good I invited her to come on my podcast! Check out her recent post on Instagram to learn how to become a leader in this space. https://www.instagram.com/p/CBR1kY7DVEB/ The replay of this Re-Imagining Small Business Town Hall with Susan Hyatt, Rachel Rodgers, Ericka Hines, Nathan Berry, Robert Hartwell and Sonya Renee Taylor. Link: https://helloseven.co/townhall-2/ I don't have all the answers, but I trust that in my own way, I can make a difference. One way I know that I can help designers, copywriters, creatives, and expert entrepreneurs get more conversions on their launches. A launch is simply a word used to plan a promo where a product or service is for sale over a certain period of time. The benefits of launching: You get to add a new stream of income to your revenue. By launching, I've added around $40K in extra revenue to my business. I said the actual number - and please know that $40K could be super high or super low for you. Some people make more, some people make less. The number is just mine, and it's a result of me doing the work to test out a dozen or so offers in the last 3 years. This number does not include the amount of money I make from consulting or sales pages. It's simply when I open and close the cart for an offer. As of right now, my signature sales page design service is still my most profitable offer and the easiest one to sell. I've also been doing it for 7 years, so it's gotten easier every time and doesn't even feel like I have to sell it when I'm on a sales call. It takes practice to get to that level of confidence - and you learn more every time to sell a service or launch. I've never actually launched my sales page service, since most of my leads come via Google or referrals. When you launch a course, product or even a new service, it's fun and exciting because, you get to try something new. You get to position yourself as an expert – and serve a bigger group of people instead of just 1:1 work. The industry is shifting, and I have to stay on top of my game if I want to become known as the conversion design expert in a bigger way. The downside of launching: You don't technically get paid until someone buys. It requires you to step out of your head and show up as an expert in your field, and consistently help your clients for free. People may not buy until a few years after they hear about you, or at all. Reality: Launching is a big-picture game. You don't score a touchdown the first time you step on the football field. You'll have lots of wins. Lots of losses. Lots of lessons. I gave the actual breakdown from my first launch debrief in 2017 on http://thedesignbusinessshow.com/064 if you want to check it out. Now the next time you launch, it's important that you're able to tell me the following 7 things about your offer: 1. Identity, Interest + Benefit Bullets The Problem You Solve. The Offer Introduction & The Offer Promise. Who is your course, product or service for? Testimonials from current and previous students. What's included in the investment? The Guarantee & Buy Now Buttons. These 7 things are the foundation of your offer, your sales page, your strategy and more. Before you stress about creating a sales page, or doing a big launch, make sure your offer is solid. If you don't know those 7 things, then it's not time to launch. It's time to focus on direct sales. You don't have to create a big marketing campaign to sell your offers. You need a way to sell it, a way for people to buy it, and a way to deliver it.  Here's a process for you to get started with your new offers. Create a beta offer. Sell it the old-fashioned way. Test it. Get your clients results. Improve your process. Offer it again until it's solid. When I first launched my mastermind for designers (this is not a secret “pitch” for my mastermind, it's not for sale right now, and I'm not sure if I'm bringing it back again), I got conversions from doing webinars. So I've done probably over 200 free webinars over the last 3 years, most of them pitch-free. Every single person who has bought from me has been on a webinar with me, so that's why I do them. I'm really into finding a thing that works, and re-implementing that strategy over and over again.  Facebook ads convert? Cool. Let them run and work on other things. People who experience a live webinar with me are more likely to buy? Awesome. Do a lot of them. The world is at home because of COVID-19? People are craving connection and tools. I ran ads to grow my FB group, and to a sales page Trello board I made. I've never had ads convert for $2-$3 per lead. The only other ads I've really ran are for webinars, and they're still converting at $11-$30 a person, so I'm not really planning to run ads to webinars anytime soon. I like to measure my launch data on 3 different things: data, energy, and sales.  Data is things like opt-in page conversion rates, FB lead costs, webinar sign up & attendance rate. Yes, energy. What fears are coming up? What isn't working? Did you plan a realistic amount of time to do this? Are you creating space in your business for more customers? For sales, you can look at things like Sales Booked on Sales Calls, Sales on Cart Open Day, Sales on Cart Close Day & Sales for each offer level. Launching is a big-picture game. You don't score a touchdown the first time you step on the football field. You'll have lots of wins. Lots of losses. Lots of lessons. It's a part of the game. I want to help you win! Anti-Racism + Radical Mindfulness: Rewiring Internal Bias

Rebel Buddhist

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 4, 2020 19:59

As nationwide protests continue to erupt throughout cities small and large in the wake of the recent murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and many more, hard and important conversations have taken hold. Conversations about systemic racism and white terrorism. About police brutality and militarized violence. About collective rage pushed to the brink from centuries of oppression in a country that was founded on genocide and slavery, on stolen Indigenous land and on the backs of enslaved people stolen from Africa. This moment deserves space. This moment demands attention. This podcast is my imperfect attempt to hold that space by offering thoughts on how to use radical mindfulness + thoughtwork to rewire our internal biases and internalized racism, so that we can move toward anti-racism work and social justice action. Here’s the deal: by being born in a society where white supremacy is the bedrock – one in which we are taught negative messages about Black and Brown people and positive messages about white people – racist thoughts and ideologies are taught to us (whether intentionally or not) from a VERY young age. Sometimes we are not even aware of these thoughts we hold and did not consciously choose. But just because we did not consciously choose them does not mean they do not exist. Many people who hold societal positions of unearned power and privilege – white people in particular – only begin to question or deconstruct these racist ideologies and systems once they grow older; some never do. People of color – and Black people in particular – are not often afforded the same luxury. Because structural racism, and the generational trauma of racial violence, is woven into the very fabric of their lives and daily experience From. Day. One. In truth, white supremacy and systemic racism hurts everybody – but in different ways and to obvious, varying degrees of violence. To believe the burden of “undoing” or “solving” racism falls on Black folks or people of color and not white people, is to be sorely mistaken. The same goes for social justice and anti-racism work. EVERYONE must take an active role to combat injustice. The process of UNlearning internal bias and racism takes WORK. It is not pretty. It is not easy. It takes risks. And it looks different for everybody.I want to invite you to do the work in the way that you can show up.Many people also don’t take action or speak up because they are afraid of doing it “wrong” or of being criticized or judged. You have to be willing to feel negative emotions to do hard things - like anti-racism and social justice work.As a coach, so much of what I teach is that we need to learn to be uncomfortable. That’s why so much of my work is around building emotional resilience. Because being uncomfortable is where the true growth happens. And what I’ve seen is that, for the long-haul, we need to also change our beliefs – (thoughts that we’ve had over and over again). One of the main purposes of our practice is to encourage you to investigate your mind, to be with emotions like shame and guilt, to see the results they are creating in your life, and to ask yourself if you want to continue that way.The Buddha taught, “You are not your thoughts”. And thoughts and actions are not the same.We need to be willing to not identify with our thoughts so that we can work with them. When we can admit that we have prejudiced thoughts, then we can take the next steps. We need more people taking action. What will lead to productive and sustainable action? For me, radical mindfulness is a tool for individual liberation that leads us to more skillful action for social justice. I want to encourage you, as my teacher Geshe Tsultrim Gyelsten said, to “Check your mind.” See your internal biases. Your internalized racist thoughts.I want to encourage you to use any guilt you might have as a signal that things are out of alignment with your values and that things need to change.I want to encourage you to not indulge in feeling shame and spinning into inaction.I want to encourage you to see that your thoughts are optional. And that you can unlearn them.**Use your privilege and donate, support, fund, and hire in an anti-racist way. Be explicit – not just intentional – because impact trumps intent. It should be no surprise to people that you are anti-racist (see ‘Resources’ below)!Remember that this is a long-term process – not a thing you get a certificate for and you’re done. And while you do this VERY important work, I want you to take action, because the world cannot wait for everyone to get their shit together. In This Episode You’ll Learn:How to use thoughtwork + radical mindfulness to rewire internal biasWhy it’s important to develop emotional resilienceThe difference between shame and guilt, and how to move beyond both toward actionHow to acknowledge when we mess up – ways to listen, learn and act instead of getting defensiveThe difference between equality and equity, between diversity and inclusionWhy you must ask yourself “What am I willing to risk?” to fight for justice and show solidarity – how to move beyond fear and avoidanceConcrete ways you can show up for the movement right NOWResourcesI encourage you to check out: // The Higher Learning Podcast has a wonderful episode on the importance of nationwide protests over George Floyd’s death.// Karen Arrington’s book Your Next Level Life about how she became an activist at age 13 (!!!) and started a protest to have the racist name of her middle school changed.// I am a HUGE fan of Rachel Cargle's work on anti-racism education and activism and the discussions she leads around race and womanhood. This is a conversation for white women about our role and privilege in a racist and white supremacist society and the work *we* need to do. As Kamala Harris said in a recent tweet: “The deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor are not isolated incidents. They are the result of systematic racism that has existed for generations.” I’ve seen on social media from white women that they’re uncertain and scared about what to say.  Yes, it can feel risky to speak up, to say something, to not be silent. But, our speaking up is *nothing* compared to the risk that Black women and men face every day. It’s the very least we can do - and it’s not enough. Saying “I’m not racist” isn’t enough. As white women, there's much work for us to do to recognize how we benefit from and uphold racism - and then do something about it. 'Ally' is a verb, not a noun (as I’ve learned from Black women who do anti-racism education). In this episode, Diane Diaz and I talk about the work of anti-racism as white women. “Anti-racism is the active process of identifying and eliminating racism by changing systems, organizational structures, policies and practices and attitudes, so that power is redistributed and shared equitably." - NAC International Perspectives: Women and Global Solidarity - http://www.aclrc.com/antiracism-defined “Speaking Your Brand” is about more than your business and marketing message; it’s who you are and what you value - and what you explicitly tell and show to the world about what matters and what you’re willing to do. Our starting place for our own work as white women is the book “Me and White Supremacy” by Layla F. Saad. I highly recommend you purchase her book and work through it. We’re going to be doing so with our clients. As white women, we need to: Recognize our privilege - and be willing to lose it Understand that we have unconscious bias Learn the history of how integral racial hierarchy and slavery were to the U.S. constitution and our capitalist economic system - and how it continues to this day Be aware of what’s going on in the news Call out racist talk Take risks, including potentially losing revenue and opportunities Listen and learn Speak up, but not over Be more than intentional - be explicit Lift up the voices of Black women and women of color Purchase from Black-owned businesses Direct people to Black women who are doing this work Vote for candidates who advocate for marginalized groups   We welcome your questions and thoughts about this episode. Social Impact Business Coach Trudi Lebron Discovered Power in Changing Narratives

Trudi Lebron is a business coach for social impact-driven entrepreneurs. She also works as a diversity equity and inclusion strategist. She reflects on how she first began her venture into the coaching space. Trudi said school loan payment helped fuel her natural side hustle tendency. She briefly describes what gave the first push of momentum behind her coaching. As one learning point, she notes: “Swim towards the people who are swimming towards you.” From there, it’s all about taking small steps. Interestingly, for Trudi, small steps are more about the questions. She’ll ask herself “How can I replace my electric bill?” rather than only saying “I’m going to save money.” Trudi is specific in finding a bare minimum to move her progress forward. Among the ways she concentrated her dedication, Trudi invested in her progress by hiring a coach. A professional coach was a huge investment at the time; “... it was more than my car payment” Trudi recalls.  While in the coaching program, Trudi needed to unpack lingering narratives about the nonprofit sector with money. She gave an example of where the narrative is birthed from and said nonprofits can attest to this honest scenario. After acknowledging the narrative, Trudi explains what brought her to realize that money can function differently. Deeper than the money narrative, Trudi commented on efficiency needing to be a larger focus for nonprofits. Many nonprofits, if they were to calculate their efforts, have a negatively disproportionate amount of money compared to the hours and services they provide. Her first suggestion towards improving efficiency is developing protocols. She explained that the protocols should hone the process, not necessarily the humans performing the process. “I tell people that they shouldn't be managing people. They should be managing outcomes, and if they stop managing people and start managing outcomes, you actually get to your outcomes way faster.”- Trudi Lebron Building a framework benefits the company’s ability to naturally thrive. Trudi expressed how nonprofits and for-profits can exchange knowledge to better their operations. How companies organize their operations don’t always match their values. Trudi discussed her approach to addressing disconnect by having her clients realize their own behavior in comparison to their values. OPPORTUNITY became the topic of discussion once Trudi talked more on the differences behind access and what people are exposed to while in their own surroundings. She did not let the lack of anything disrupt her from starting her ventures. Trudi navigated her space with questioning, seeking where she could find the resources. Through this, she goes back to discussing coaching, and also the importance of collaboration. During the end of our conversation, Trudi really expressed how her passion for coaching is linked with diversity and inclusion. Trudi’s passion is the driving force behind her ventures, which continues through work such as coaching, Script Flip, and her new podcast, Business Remixed - a different kind of business podcast around social impact. Trudi Lebron is the first to tell you she's an excellent student. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. and that level of commitment didn't start in adulthood. In fact it started in her humble beginnings as a high-school dropout who had two sons by the time she was 17.Trudi felt that the world had given up on her, but she was sure that her sons deserved a mother who was happy and fulfilled, and she set out to be just that. Today she is a Connecticut-based business coach, social impact entrepreneur, and mother of three boys. She and her fiancé recently decided that Kennedy, their 9-year-old, no longer had to endure schooling. As a recent unschooler, Kennedy was asked how it felt to be out of school. He said it felt like "being free."
