Send me a messageIn this episode, I sit down with Kenny McGee, CEO and founder of Component Sense, to explore how his company is driving sustainability in the electronics industry. Kenny shares the story behind Component Sense's origins—born out of a pressing need to manage surplus electronic components—and how it has grown into a leader in redistributing excess inventory. We dig into some hard truths about waste in the electronics supply chain. Did you know that millions of brand-new components are scrapped every year simply because they're surplus to requirements? Kenny explains how Component Sense prevents this waste by redistributing unused, traceable parts to businesses that need them, ensuring valuable resources don't end up in landfills. From navigating financial crises and COVID-19 to tackling Brexit's logistical headaches, Kenny's journey highlights the challenges of running a purpose-driven business. He also discusses how his team has developed innovative tools, such as their InPlant system, to integrate seamlessly into clients' supply chains, making redistribution both easy and profitable. We also touch on broader industry challenges, including the rise of counterfeit components, the regulatory gaps around circularity, and the urgent need for global, not just local, sustainability efforts. Kenny makes a compelling case for prioritising reuse over waste, urging businesses to take responsibility for their environmental impact.Towards the end, we explore the fascinating role legacy components play in keeping vital industrial machinery alive, a topic that underscores the value of thinking long-term in our throwaway culture. If you've ever wondered how we can align sustainability with business value in the electronics industry, this episode will give you practiElevate your brand with the ‘Sustainable Supply Chain' podcast, the voice of supply chain sustainability.Last year, this podcast's episodes were downloaded over 113,000 times by senior supply chain executives around the world.Become a sponsor. On this edition of Parallax Views, Pulitzer Prize winning reporter David Cay Johnston has becomes widely known for his reporting on Donald Trump. He first reported on Donald Trump in 1988 and his since written three books on the former President: The Making of Donald Trump (2016), It's Even Worse Than You Think: What the Trump Administration is Doing to America (2018), and The Big Cheat: How Donald Trump Fleeced America and Enriched Himself and His Family (2022). Before writing those books on the MAGA movement leader, however, David wrote about what he refers to as the "hidden-in-plain sight system we have that takes from the money and redistributes to the very few". Turns out, there's a connective tissue between Davide's books on Trump and his reporting on that hidden system. Namely, David says, Trump is the embodiment of that system. In this interview, David and I will delve into how his books Temples of Chance: How America Inc. Bought Out Murder Inc. to Win Control of the Casino Business (1992), Perfectly Legal: The Covert Campaign to Rig Our Tax System to Benefit the Super Rich—and Cheat Everybody Else (2003), Free Lunch: How the Wealthiest Americans Enrich Themselves at Government Expense and Stick You With The Bill (2007), The Fine Print: How Big Companies Use "Plain English" to Rob You Blind (2012), and Divided: The Perils of Our Growing Inequality (2014). We'll delve into Trump's pro-corporate, anti-working class agenda; some of the specific mechanism that have been used to make massive wealth transfer to the rich at the expense of the working class and poor since Reagan; the Heritage Foundation's Project 2025; the Build the Wall charity scam; President Joe Biden, the U.S. economy, inflation, job creation, and wage increases; Trump's views on minimum wage not being pro-worker; Trump's reverse Robin Hood tax policy and tax cuts to the rich; the problem with big mainstream media today and why the legacy media outlets don't intensively cover issues effecting everyday Americans enough; the warping of the campaign finance system since the Watergate scandal; how the donor class became so powerful in the American political system; a history lesson going back to the Civil War through to the Nixon years and beyond on how we got to this moment; the Supreme Court decisions that helped shaped politics in favor of big business; the poverty found in low-tax societies and David's reporting on "hidden taxes" in Singapore; the modern world's need for investments in public infrastructure and the creation of common wealth that benefits all; issues facing the education system today and how failing literacy rates in America are ruining the American political system; China's innovations in education and what it means for America; and much, much more! This is by far the best interview of had with David Cay Johnston.

Marissa Fayer is the founder and CEO of HERhealthEQ, a global non-profit with the mission to improve women's health in developing countries by providing access to medical devices & equipment, creating an equitable standard of care. Here are two 2020 statistics from the World Health Organization that highlight the inequitable standard of care for women in developing countries that HERhealthEQ is trying to combat: ●       90% of cervical cancer and related deaths worldwide occurred in low- and middle-income countries ●      approximately 95% of all maternal deaths occurred in low and lower-middle-income countries, and most could have been prevented
Marissa has spent the last 22 years growing medical device companies into world-class organizations through improvements in their operations, implementation of new innovations, connections to capital sources, and creation of more sustainable impact-driven organizations. She is a strategic advisor, board member, and executive leader of several venture-backed private companies. Marissa is also a UCSC Miller Center Social Entrepreneur Fellow and has been listed as one of the Top 100 Women in Medtech.  In this episode, we discuss: ●      Why HERhealthEQ is focused on noncommunicable diseases ●      The counterintuitive healthcare consequences of foreign aid ending as a developing country grows its economy ●      The importance of strategic partners in creating change Key Takeaways: ●      While we often spotlight sustainability in business, focusing on financial, social, and environmental sustainability, it's crucial to turn this lens inward and consider personal sustainability. This is about finding that sweet spot where what we do aligns with what we love and what we're good at. This harmony is the antidote to burnout. It's about not just being a cog in a machine, but being a vibrant, contributing part of a meaningful pursuit. Working towards something that resonates with our values and beliefs isn't just fulfilling; it's personally sustaining and personally regenerative. ●      There's a curious magic in the act of paying, even a token amount, for something. It's like a psychological switch that flips our perception of value. When people invest in something, even minimally, they're more likely to use and appreciate it. This principle is a fundamental human truth that applies to products and services. Charging a fee isn't just a business strategy; it can be a way to ensure engagement and respect for what's being offered. ●      Amazon famously paid zero federal income taxes in 2018, despite an $11.2 billion profit. They achieved this through completely legal tax strategies: heavily reinvesting profits back into the business, which allows for tax deductions; utilizing tax credits, especially for research and development; paying employees with stock options, which can offer tax advantages; and carrying forward financial losses from unprofitable years to offset taxes in profitable years. It feels unfair that a successful company can avoid federal income tax, which supports the common good for a nation including roads, infrastructure, emergency services, and education. However, I love the idea that corporations should only be eligible to enjoy certain tax benefits if they demonstrably contribute to society or the planet. It's about modifying our systems to align financial success with ethical responsibility, transforming business from a mere profit-making entity to a force for positive change.  References: ●      Connect with Marissa on LinkedIn ●      “How to ensure social enterprises have an impact”, TEDxLugano ●      HERhealthEQ ●      Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières  Connect & Share: If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? Demands at work have been piling on in recent years. Including the demand on employees to continue to do more with less. And those demands come with a lot of potential burnout at work. Burnout at work is a series problem for most organizations. Burnout can lead to decreased productivity, increased absenteeism, and even physical and mental health issues. It's incumbent on every leader to be aware of and attempt to avoid burnout on their teams. But burnout isn't always caused by asking too much of employees. Being overcapacity can be one element that triggers a burned-out team. But there are other triggers leaders need to be aware of. In this episode, we will explore the five triggers of burnout at work and discuss how leaders can mitigate them to create a more engaged and productive team. 0:00 Introduction 2:03 Lack of Margin 3:30 Lack of Control 5:06 Lack of Clarity 6:47 Lack of Civility 8:26 Lack of Social Support 10:02 Conclusion By addressing these triggers of burnout, leaders can create a work environment that promotes employee well-being, engagement, and productivity. Redistributing tasks, providing autonomy, ensuring clarity, promoting civility, and fostering social support are all essential steps in preventing burnout and creating a more positive and fulfilling work experience. We've talked about the delegation of physical house chores before...but what about the mental work load? The society we grew up in has, for a long time, expected women to be the ones to keep the household together both physical chores and mental chores like keeping the kids on schedule, scheduling parties or family plans, appointments, and anything in between. But our society is changing, it is evolving, and it's becoming more and more exhausting and unbalanced between the members of the household. So if you feel like you're the one doing all of the chores - both physical AND mental - it's time to learn how to communicate those feelings in a healthy and composed manner to your family or other household members to make it an even, balanced, and happy playing field for everyone!  Find me on Social Media: Facebook - Jenny Whitens Instagram - @jenwhitens // @shedtheshamepodcastTwitter - @jenwhitensEmail - jen@jenwhitenswellness.com Ways To Work With Jenny:1:1 Mindset Mastery Mentorship (for anyone) ➡️  book a discovery call HEREMasterclasses CCCC Private Group Membership (details here!)1:1 Breakthrough Session (Book Here!)DM Jen on social media or email jen@jenwhitenswellness.com to see which is right for you!

On this episode of Rehash we sat down with Sumedha Deshmukh from Crypto Council for Innovation to discuss the intersection of blockchain, policy, inclusion, and accessibility. Sumedha first became interested in blockchain through the lens of how it could support international development. As a natural skeptic, she began researching blockchain on her own before turning her findings into a video guide for other development practitioners. Over the course of this project, Sumedha became even more interested in the blockchain space and later made the jump by joining the World Economic Forum's Blockchain and Digital Assets team in 2018.Diana starts off our discussion with a big question - wen meaningful policy? Sumedha explains how crypto's history has been ironically plagued by barriers to entry and how that has impacted its adoption by the general public as well as its treatment by legislators. Although the space has developed drastically over the last decade, regulatory organizations are still waiting to see what real world impact blockchain could have before they give it more of their attention. Sumedha also gives us her thoughts around how policy makers could begin protecting consumers without stifling innovation. During our conversation, we also dive into redistributing wealth and power, self custody, diversity in web3, and how mainstream news cycles influence crypto policy.

Mr. Trump has for weeks said he declassified materials taken to Mar-a-Lago, his home in Florida. In a Fox News interview that aired on Wednesday night, he said a sitting president doesn’t need to have a formal process for declassifying documents, and can carry out such an order “even by thinking about it.” Mr. Trump’s lawyers have been more circumspect in their courtroom statements. They have said declassification is a potential defense they may raise later on, once they have a better understanding of what was seized, but haven’t asserted that any specific documents were declassified. Even those lawyers’ carefully worded statements drew scrutiny this week, both from an appeals court and the court-appointed arbiter tasked with reviewing the approximately 11,000 documents seized at Mar-a-Lago. Senior U.S. District Judge Raymond Dearie, the semiretired jurist serving as special master, has pressed for specific evidence of a declassification order, telling Mr. Trump’s lawyers at a hearing this week: “You can’t have your cake and eat it.” And in a written order on Wednesday, the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals noted the lack of evidence at this point validating Mr. Trump’s declassification defense. “Plaintiff suggests that he may have declassified these documents when he was President,” the unanimous three-judge panel said. “But the record contains no evidence that any of these records were declassified. And before the special master, Plaintiff resisted providing any evidence that he had declassified any of these documents.” The three-judge panel, which included two Trump-appointed judges, also called the declassification argument a “red herring.” Even if Mr. Trump had declassified the documents, the appeals court said, that wouldn’t convert them from government records into his personal property or establish a reason for him to have retained them. Dr. Merkle gave three reasons why more colleges should oppose this new program. First, Biden’s plan doesn’t really cancel student loan debt. It just redistributes it to other taxpayers – many of whom did not attend college or have already paid back their debt. Adding more taxes to already over-taxed households to cover someone else’s bad debt is not equitable, fair, or right. Second, moving the debt from the students who signed up for the student loan payments in the first place to the taxpayers who didn’t will create a series of ripple effects that will be hard to reign in. Our nation’s young people will learn that loans don’t need to be paid back and taxpayers will grow more skeptical and bitter toward higher ed. Further, each successive generation will expect the federal government to bail them out of their higher ed debt. Third, the more that higher education participates in these federal loan programs the more it becomes dependent on federal handouts. If the federal government is the primary funder of postsecondary education in America, then colleges and universities are disincentivized to perform better or to offer improved services to their primary consumers: students and parents. Essentially, we are fostering yet another industrial-complex where American industry and the government are embroiled in a “too big to fail” mindset that fosters highly irresponsible financial behaviors. Meanwhile, colleges that decline to take federal funding must work even harder to compete for students against institutions that are artificially propped up by the government and where the true cost of education is obscured by a loan cancellation program. https://dailycaller.com/2022/09/21/josh-hawley-introduce-legislation-student-debt-make-universities-pay-act/ Republican Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley will introduce legislation Wednesday that puts colleges and universities on the hook for student debt. The bill was first obtained by the Daily Caller and is titled the Make the Universities Pay Act. The Legislation would require institutions of higher education participating in the Federal Direct Student Loan Program to pay 50% of any student loan balance that is in default. The Make the Universities Pay Act would also allow student loan debt to be discharged in bankruptcy and allow undergraduate student loan debt to be discharged five years after the first payment is due, while graduate student loan can be discharged 15 years after the first payment is due. In addition, the bill requires each institution of higher education participating in federal financial aid programs to publish post-graduate outcomes, including mean and median earnings of graduates and student loan default rates, disaggregated by each degree or program of study. The Biden administration is taking executive action to forgive $10,000 per borrower. The move would clear $321 billion of federal student loans and clear the student debt for almost 12 million people, according to CNBC. “For decades, universities have amassed billion-dollar endowments while teaching nonsense like men can get pregnant. All while charging extortionary tuition. Now Joe Biden wants to give away another $1 trillion to prop up the system. That’s wrong. Instead, it’s time to put universities on the hook and give students the information they need to make informed decisions,” Hawley told the Caller before introducing the legislation. Hawley plans on introducing the legislation later Wednesday afternoon. The Psalm of the Day: Psalm 115 https://open.spotify.com/track/2qvDdOEbYxRinuuarNVBCA?si=64917b6789fd4427 0:37-1:33 Amen! Again that’s ClassicalConversations.com. https://nsa.edu/posts/liberal-arts-college-oppose-bidens-student-loan-relief Moscow, Idaho–New Saint Andrews College, one of only a handful of colleges across the US to refuse federal money, is taking a stand against the White House’s attempt to cancel federal student loans and is calling on more schools to speak out against Biden’s plan. “Redistributing federal student loan debt to taxpayers reinforces poor financial decisions, ruins the public’s trust in higher ed, exacerbates our current inflationary economy, penalizes colleges that decline to take federal funding, and prolongs higher education’s game of hide and seek with financial realities,” said Dr. Benjamin Merkle, president of the Idaho-based Christian liberal arts college. “I’ve been referring to this as our ‘Big Ed’ problem,” Dr. Merkle said. “I believe more and more parents and students have added higher ed to a growing list of other “big” businesses that abuse power to get easy money.” Dr. Merkle added that many political leaders on both sides of the aisle can see the road this is taking us down and how it drives higher ed to an even more precarious position than it's already in. I'm so excited to have Eve Rodsky on the podcast again! Eve first joined me on the podcast back in episode #312 where she discussed her book Fair Play: A Game-Changing Solution for When You Have Too Much to Do (and More Life to Live). I highly recommend going back and listening to that episode so you have a foundational understanding of the concept of Fair Play. Since she was here last time, she has released the Fair Play Documentary that I also think you should go watch. In this episode, Eve and I discuss the invisible work being done at home and how society has tried to erase the gender division of labor in the home. So much focus has been on women and giving women tools to better balance work life and home life. Eve found it difficult through Fair Play to give solutions to families who said that both the man and the woman in the household were doing a task. Enter the mustard. How did the mustard get into your refrigerator? This is a great example that you have to hear Eve use to explain the difference between the execution of a task versus the cognitive labor related to a task. It's eye-opening! We then discuss some of Eve's family background growing up with a single mom as well as my daughter Abby's life as a single mom today. A large number of children each year are both to single moms. These single moms are unfortunately at a disadvantage because they are usually holding all of the cards for their families and therefore have fewer work and income opportunities available.  Eve also walks me through an exercise that I hope you will also do for yourself. First, what is an activity outside of your roles that you love to do and share with the world? This goes beyond self-care or exercise or pleasure reading. Second, what is something you love to do? What values does doing this thing bring up for you? I of course talked about travel and learning, but Eve helped me see how understanding the values underneath these things will help you find activities that can bring up these values for you even when you're unable to do the activities you really want to do. I hope you enjoyed this conversation with Eve Rodsky as much as I did! Natasha Kaneva is joined by Tracey Allen to discuss the fundamental and price outlook for agricultural markets through 2022-23. The precarious situation of historically high food prices and risks of physical shortages of cereals and vegetable oils over the years ahead presents an immensely challenging outlook for agricultural supply chains and risk management. Historical episodes of food price inflation have typically been driven by supply side shocks, often from adverse weather. For agri markets, this time is different, and far more complex and likely longer to overcome-despite the aggressive selloff across markets through late May. Agri prices are expected to remain elevated through 2023 and likely beyond. Though, stymied investor risk appetite amid discussions of a humanitarian export corridor for Ukrainian food exports, downside global growth risks and hand to mouth consumer buying, has driven a downward revision in our price forecasts through 2022.
