He was the head men's basketball coach at MSOE for 19 seasons. Prior to that he was also the head coach at Concordia Chicago and Lakeland.     We sit down with Coach Matt Airy! Coach Airy most recently spent three seasons as the head men's basketball coach at Aurora University. Prior to that he spent eleven years at his alma mater Whitman College. As an associate head coach he helped lead Whitman to the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Sweet Sixteen (2016), Final Four (2017), and Elite Eight (2018)! He has spent time at Arkansas Pine-Bluff, Santa Barbara City College and Cal. He has also spent time in minor league baseball with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Milwaukee Brewers. He is the current skipper of the Waterloo Bucks (Northwoods League) and in 2020 won a championship with the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders as a pitching coach (Northwoods League). Take a listen!     -Dad told him to get a job in college and he saw a posting while driving his car for “middle school hiring 8th grade basketball coach” -Coached varsity basketball the next year with Chris Ferguson and his brother worked at Michigan State -Opened the door to his graduate assistantship at Michigan State -Coached Al Horford and Drew Neitzel with Michigan Mustangs -Masters degree in coaching being under Coach Tom Izzo -Saw Drew Neitzel grow as a person and player almost as a big brother -Has held every job on a coaching tree except for head coach -Landed at Fairfield with Ed Cooley for his first true full-time job in coaching after leaving Michigan State -Coach Cooley and all other coaches on staff came from a better basketball situation as they headed to Fairfield -Coach Cooley never let the staff complain, always found the positive in everything -Never met a better recruiter than Ed Cooley because he was real and genuine -Brought in 8 guys in the first season -Interviewed in an all white Jordan Jumpsuit because his luggage got lost -Loves the east coast after living there -Moved back to Michigan to take a position at Western Michigan under Steve Hawkins -Coach Hawkins gave him a ton of freedom, responsibility and a chance to grow -Had completely different outlook at office hours from Coach Hawkins and made him appreciate another view of coaching -Coach Hawkins really valued the players lives -Watching film with Coach Boylen at Maui Classic -Spent one season at Missouri after leaving Western Michigan -Met Dave Leitao at Missouri -In charge of all individual workouts and scouts at Missouri -Felt like an NBA assistant situation -Was focused on game that they were playing but also watching film on the next game -Headed to Xavier to work for Chris Mack after his one season at Missouri -Xavier did a really good job recruiting kids that didn’t go to Big Ten -Chris Mack is best organizer of a program that he has been around -What it was like coaching J.P. Macura who is basically a little brother to him -Doubled his salary and made him associate head coach in move to DePaul from Xavier -Role to be head coach at DePaul with Leitao as head figure -The fall out at DePaul -Spotter -Getting back in the game he would appreciate winning more -Would appreciate the people in my family outside of basketball -Running a company, there is really no difference between that and building a team

    -Ended playing career as senior captain in 1993 on national champion North Carolina Tar Heels. -“There’s very few guys that get to end their college playing career with a win in the last game of the season.” -Dreamed of playing professional basketball player as a kid and wanted to take advantage of that opportunity after finishing at North Carolina. -Good friend from college (his dad) owned a forklift company in North Carolina. Had an opening for a sales position and offered him the position. -Had itch to get back into basketball after three years of selling forklifts. -Playing for Coach Dean Smith has helped him on his resume. Thought it would be easier to get coaching job with connection to Coach Smith. -Business world was very similar to the coaching world from selling component. -“Put yourself in a situation where you have a great product.” -Fortunate to be at great institutions where he could sell an unbelievable product and service. -Learned a lot talking to people, finding their hot buttons, what interests they had. -All about the relationships you build and people you know. -Coach Smith asked him, “Are you willing to go anywhere in the country to coach?” -First coaching job was coaching JV and varsity assistant with a friend at Bishop McGuinness High School outside Winston Salem area. -Got connected to Middle Tennessee State assistant women’s job the next year by one of his former assistants at North Carolina. -Asked a lot of former coaches if they thought by him going into women’s game, if he could get back into men’s game at some point. -Coach Larrañaga was looking for a specific, young guy who was fairly new out of college that could still play and get out on the floor. He ran into Coach Guthridge on the road recruiting and asked if he knew anybody and the rest was history. -Coach Larrañaga great motivator, recruits at a high level, knows how to build a program. -Coaching George Evans at George Mason. -Coach Larrañaga has done a great job finding a way to recruit at different institutions. -George Mason roster had guys who were well connected and wanted to put the time in. -“The teams that I’ve been apart of that were great, they were all player led." -Western Kentucky was unique. Veteran led group but they didn’t believe they could do it. Most intense hard working group that he had ever seen. -Each year and each team is completely different. -Going into SEC was different level. More people involved in the recruiting process. Did a great job building South Carolina in year one. -Relocating for the fourth time to High Point over 18 months. -Wife played basketball and understands the process. -Don’t know that you’re ever prepared to become a head coach. -Took things from Coach Smith, Coach Horn and Coach Larrañaga. -Backbone of everything he did was Coach Smith’s philosophy of “Play Hard. Play Smart. Play Together.” -Wanted to work hard and do things the right way. -Early on in career wondered do people CARE? Commitment Attitude Respect Effort -One of the biggest challenges at High Point was knowing and understanding the university and finding what works. -Checked off firsts in program history including 20 wins and post season wins. -Unfortunate injuries in multiple years while trying to make first NCAA appearance. -"It’s easier said than done but you need to block out all the noise.     -Played baseball in college at Rio Grande for first two years of college. Got to know basketball coach and had passion to coach -Transferred to Urbana and helped out as a student assistant -Kept on full-time after he finished at Urbana and stayed around for two more seasons -Became a GA for two seasons at Ashland and coached under Keith Dambrot in second season -Worked camps and connected with Steve Moore (second in D3 all-time wins) giving him an opportunity to spend six seasons with him as an assistant at The College of Wooster -Could have been happy being an assistant coach there for 30 years but thought (main duties were coaching and recruiting) -Thought maybe it was time to get a head coaching job and move on -Interviewed at a few places and was offered the job at Illinois College -Took on many different duties including coaching multiple sports at Illinois College -Vastly different situation from College of Wooster to Illinois College -Went away from motion and started running more sets to get better shots -Recruiting improved and team qualified for conference tournament in third season (first time in school history) -Won Midwest Conference Tournament in 2002-03 and qualified for the NCAA Tournament by beating Grinnell at old Darby. -What was it like to play Grinnell? -Travel in the Midwest Conference and Friday/Saturday back to back games -Prepped with Saturday scouting report on previous Monday, then Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday for Friday night game -How it ended during the 2017-18 season -Only had $3,500 for assistant coach in his last season -In his 22 years, his assistants made around $60,000 combined -Had multiple coaches under him go on to lead their own programs -Took an early retirement buyout that the college was offering -Former assistant coach under him, Steve Thompson (College of Wooster grad), was an AD at Eureka and then took the Bethany AD job -In the summer of 2018, Steve asked Mike if he wanted to come work for him -Currently Associate Athletic Director and does “whatever needs to be done” -Will be an assistant for basketball this season, teaches classes and may help with tennis as well -“Any other duties assigned.” -Averaged 22 to 30 guys on the roster per year to help the college with enrollment and played JV schedule -“Once you get to a certain point, if you don’t make a move you’re almost bound to stay and hope it works out.” -Misses the coaching part -“You miss having a team.” -Misses being miserable -Still stays connected to former Illinois College and College of Wooster players -30 or 31 players or student coaches/managers met their spouse at Illinois College -Had the opportunity to coach Lamont Paris at Wooster who is now the head coach at Tennessee Chattanooga -Also coached Ryan Pedon at College of Wooster who is currently an assistant coach at Ohio State -The advice to his son on coaching at Ashland as a GA currently -What it was like coaching Jacob Tucker -Following him down to Houston at the Slam Dunk contest and the stories with him winning it -“If you want to do the college game, you have to do it when you are young.” -Enjoys talking with other coaches at Bethany because he has been through some things -“Have your resume ready.” -Enjoyed coaching in the competitive Midwest Conference --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
