For 20 years I was a chocolatier; working in the magic and mystery of the liquid crystal medium we call “chocolate”. Then I became a yoga teacher and manual therapist, specialising in soft tissue (fascia), learning (for the next 20 years) that we have an inner matrix that is also a liquid crystal medium. As a storyteller, full of wonder and curiosity about how this magical, living architecture of each unique human form works, I was fascinated to write “YOGA: Fascia, Anatomy and Movement”. I learned we each express our own matrix our own way; archetypally. It led me via many scientists, researchers, clients and curious fellow beings, to presenting around the world from the leading edge of this fascinating field. How do fascia and biotensegrity (the geometry of our form) help us to move better, feel better and enjoy more? I will be talking to some of those experts and sharing some experiences from the thousands of movement and manual sessions I have done and hours I have spent in the anatomy laboratory; exploring how fascia (our self-assembled inner matrix) reveals its secrets. We don’t always know the code, but since the magic is sometimes in the mystery, the stories help us to better understand pain (to remove it) and performance (to improve it), in our own unique (and archetypal) ways.
Can subtle movement shifts really prevent long-term pain? In this episode, Joanne Avison and Paul Thornley unpack the power of pattern interrupts — small, intelligent changes that help you move better and hurt less. From gym routines to ballet classes, we often repeat movement patterns without realising they're leading us toward strain or injury. Joanne and Paul explore how micro-movements and balanced training can restore mobility, reduce wear and tear, and keep us feeling good long-term.They share real-life examples from their practice, and offer simple, fascia-informed strategies that work for everyone — not just athletes.* Subscribe for more fascia-informed insight and please do leave us a rating or review - it really helps others to find this healing work!* Explore MicroMovement training at myofascialmagic.com or contact us for more information or a discovery call about our course for practitioners, on info@myofascialmagic.comSIGN UP TO THE JOANNE AVISON NEWSLETTER Simply scroll down to ‘Join Our Collective' and pop in your details. Join me as I build on our recent episode about fascia as a spiritual interface, to delve deeper into the incredible ways this inner web connects our mind, body and spirit! It is both our soft-tissue architecture, and the home of our embodied wisdom and awareness, storing feelings and managing how energy moves through us…We'll explore fascia's nature as a liquid crystal matrix - much like the responsive display of our phone screens, or, like chocolate! It is animated by our beingness and connects you to your inner self, even igniting moments of spiritual awakening. Then I share fascia's utterly mind-blowing embryological origins… It is literally the sensory means by which you feel your way into form! And thirdly, I touch on that feeling we often get when we hear things like this - a feeling that we already know this, that something resonates with an inherent wisdom we already have…We finish with a lovely practical meditation to help you connect with this directly. When you understand this liquid crystal, you can more easily see how your energy and your responses are connected, healing as your spirit dances within. And by tuning into your fascia, you can tap into deep, inner knowing, remembering your own powerful intuitive wisdom. Enjoy! We live inside a concept of “linear time” and “linear space” and we work on the basis of “linear form” in movement, from the way classical anatomy is taught. Yet fascia, the fascinating “matrix of time and space” in the body - is part of everyone's non-linear form and non-linear motion...In this episode, Joanne is joined by her friend and colleague Shane McDermott to delve into the fascinating topic of “linear time” and how it can dominate our productivity and our culture and our self-image. What if we have the power to change that, with just a subtle shift in perspective and these beautiful distinctions? Can it impact our sense of self and our soul journey if we expand our understanding in simple ways that change how we perceive our bodies? How we move? How we feel?Join Joanne and Shane as they invite listeners to expand their consciousness and gain a new perspective on, or relationship with, how we interact with time and space. Discover how you can break free from the constraints of linear time and see your way off the treadmill of the “productivity trap” and towards living a more empowered, intuitive, and awakened life. In this conversation, Joanne Avison interviews Shane McDermott, an advanced practitioner, photographer, therapist, and explorer, often referred to as a “contemporary renaissance man”. They introduce the essential difference it makes to understand the human body beyond anatomy - and into archetypes - over time. To begin, they reminisce about meeting 25 years ago while teaching for Tom Myers and reflect on their time training with Caroline Myss, when she first taught Sacred Contracts (Archetypes) in person. Joanne and Shane delve into the transformative impact of understanding archetypes on body work therapy, emphasizing the way we understand time and how it is linked so closely to our life force. When we think we are time bound - we can operate at a level that keeps us on the “hamster wheel”. When we know how our archetypes work, in time, we can access deeper states of being and healing. It is a wonderful introduction to the series on Space and Time that's coming up soon. Make sure you subscribe so you don't miss it - and also check out our first episode with Shane released recently - 'Listening vs Hearing: How To Tune Into The World Around You' to put it all into practice.SIGN UP TO THE JOANNE AVISON NEWSLETTER Simply scroll down to ‘Join Our Collective' and pop in your details. Hello everyone and welcome! Today I'm exploring moving from burnout to balance. Whether you're a busy parent, an entrepreneur, a team member, or you just balance a lot, this is for you.Burnout can manifest in many ways, from feeling constantly tired to losing passion for the things you once loved. Our bodies are incredibly intelligent, often giving us signals long before our minds catch up. Tuning in and recognising our own body's language, can guide us toward tiny adjustments that make huge differences to prevent it.Especially if we honour the internal signals and treat ourselves with compassion. It's so easy to criticise ourselves, especially when we're juggling different roles and tasks and not managing everything perfectly. But self-awareness and compassion are key to finding that balance we seek; productivity might not be the optimum reward! Plus there's micro things we can do to create a huge difference! So how can we move from burnout to balance? It starts with small, practical steps. Taking time for yourself, establishing boundaries and listening to your body. Certain simple things can make a profound difference. Particularly remembering that moving from burnout to balance is a journey, not a destination - it's more of a process than an event. It's worth being patient with yourself; listening to your body, and practicing self-compassion…and using some of these simple tools. Just because they work and you're worth it!SIGN UP TO THE JOANNE AVISON NEWSLETTER Simply scroll down to ‘Join Our Collective' and pop in your details. Join us to learn three great movements for healing Diastasis Recti.Your body is round and it needs to do what it does naturally, which is breathe, gently spiral and walk - while it heals. Some methods of working with this issue require you to compress and tighten an area that is already in trouble. That's a bit like shouting at yourself when you fell over and grazed your knee! What you really want is a gentle hand to help you get up and clean the graze and give you a bit of loving kindness!! Here you go - In this episode Paul Thornley and Joanne Avison explain why you DO NOT SHOUT at Diastasis Recti and YOU DO give yourself the right KIND of loving kindness. That way you are gently training over time (instead of straining in overtime) using Nature's Ground Reaction Force to help you - to find your way back to a more optimum degree of healing. It's a process - that ensures progress. Wishing your clients and you well in your kind-to-yourself practice. (Your rectus abdominis myofascia will thank you!) In this thought-provoking episode, we delve into the history of how the study of science in the West separated soma from soul. The notion of soul separation has sparked intense debate, with many seeking to reconcile the principles of science and spirituality. By understanding how the somatic approach was separated from the study of psychology, we can wonder if tapping into the wisdom of our body might foster a deeper connection with our soul. Join Joanne Avison, considering (with compassion for our forefathers) where “soma and soul” were divorced. As we navigate the complexities of biomechanics and understand the fascia matrix, can we uncover hidden secrets about the very nature of our being? By tuning into our body wisdom and recognising that the wisdom of our soul animates it, perhaps we can naturally find a more profound understanding of our true essence and cultivate a more soulful approach to wellness practices and how we can be compassionate with ourselves...SIGN UP TO THE JOANNE AVISON NEWSLETTER Simply scroll down to ‘Join Our Collective' and pop in your details. Join Joanne and Paul in this fascinating episode as they share insights - and debunk some common myths - around Plantar Fasciitis. There's often different reasons FOR the pain, and it can need a variety of different treatments depending on the root cause. Sometimes Plantar Fasciitis is blamed on high arches, sometimes on low arches (flat feet). Sometimes there's shin splints (from overuse) and sometimes lack of motion is blamed. Often it's hard to know what, where and why you, or a client, might be struggling - it just hurts. So in this episode we're bringing together our decades of experience in treating people and teaching movement, to help unravel this debilitating condition. We explore the intricate architecture of the foot, the various causes behind this painful condition, and why personalized treatment is crucial. We discuss how factors like genetics, early development, and even the type of shoes worn during childhood contribute to the condition. And we share valuable advice on differentiating treatment approaches, the impact of surface interfaces on foot health, and the importance of respecting our body's natural tissue intelligence. We hope you enjoy the conversation and leave it feeling better informed and equipped in dealing with - or preventing - foot pain!SIGN UP TO THE JOANNE AVISON NEWSLETTER Simply scroll down to ‘Join Our Collective' and pop in your details. For many it's the season for gifting, and I want to share a very special gift with you, dear Listener! Last year John Sharkey and Mark Flannigan released a gold standard, peer-reviewed research paper which seeks to move us towards an interdisciplinary definition of fascia, particularly for the benefit of all fascia-focused movement and manual practitioners. It's an incredible and important piece of work, and so many of you loved hearing about it when I originally released this (in fact it quickly became one of our most listened-to episodes of all time), that I couldn't resist re-sharing it with you now, for any who missed it or any who want a refresher!Every movement instructor and manual practitioner I meet seeks to help others to move better and feel better. We all strive to do our best within our respective modalities and “scope of practice”. Yet we find the definition of fascia elusive – because it is. It's elusive to us, to the medical professions and to our clients, when we try to translate what we're doing and why. Learning about fascia and myofascial behaviours is rapidly becoming essential to all practitioners. Yet where do we start, if we don't have a definition that makes sense to us all?In this paper these esteemed authors offer some brilliant insights and answers, which I attempt to translate and slightly “storify” for you here, so that regardless of your modality or familiarity with reading research, you'll feel better informed overall, and inspired and confident to sit down and read it.If you only want a general overview – and can't wait to read the actual piece – then stop at the 26 minute mark – and go to the paper from there. If you'd enjoy the deeper insights, then keep on to the cliff-hanger at the end! Either way – please gift yourself the paper and ENJOY!!READ THE PAPER‘Towards a Paramedical Interdisciplinary Definition of Fascia Supporting Practitioners Offering Fascia-Focused Therapies' – John Sharkey, Mark Flannigan. This is an IMPORTANT conversation with Dr Jean-Claude Guimberteau, who is famous for his videos of the Fascia Matrix IN VIVO. In vivo means “in the living body”, and in this interview he explains the difference between learning anatomy from dead or living bodies. We make different conclusions when we learn in these different ways - and it matters.Fascia is essentially, our living tissue architecture. It's alive and well to the extent that we are - and you could say we are alive and well to the extent that it is! Essentially, your fascia is organising you anyway - and Dr Guimberteau tells us why this is so important. In fact it matters so much that we decided to re-release this gem of a conversation from our archives so that more of you can hear it. We also talk about the inspiration and motivation behind bringing his work to the public domain, the relationship between fractal chaos and efficient movement, and the non-linear nature of all biological forms. Dr Guimberteau also treated us to some philosophical reflections on the deep wisdom that comes when we accept the unpredictable nature of the fascial fibres within us...ABOUT DR JEAN CLAUDE GUIMBERTEAUDr Jean-Claude Guimberteau is co-founder and scientific director of the Institut Aquitain de la Main, and former President of the French Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (2011-2012) (SOFCPRE). Through his innovative use of video-endoscopy investigating the fascia matrix, Dr Guimberteau has revolutionised our understanding of living human architecture. https://www.endovivo.com/SIGN UP TO THE JOANNE AVISON NEWSLETTER Simply scroll down to ‘Join Our Collective' and pop in your details. In this episode Joanne addresses a fascinating question about micro movement, from a Myofascial Magic in Action course participant. She unpacks why daily micro movements can lead to such significant improvements in wellbeing, explaining this phenomenon through the key concepts of challenge, courage, and care.Could it be that these small, mindful movements can serve our wellbeing as much (if not more than) the grand physical achievements we might strive to achieve? Is this the missing link in understanding myofascia applied? How exactly does the body's natural ability to self-organize link to overall health? What can we learn from Joanne's elegant 85 year old mother...? And, most importantly, given the knowledge of the fascia matrix behind the work, how can these subtle practices transform our health and human performance? In this episode Joanne and Paul explore the evolution of movement science, emphasising the non-linear, self-organising nature of human bodies. With a delightful blend of historical anecdotes, personal stories, and foundational research, they challenge the traditional biomechanical approach to human movement.Joanne reveals how an 18th century mechanical duck offers insights into why we've long thought mechanically about the human body (and we all know Joanne's NOT a fan of this approach!), while Paul passionately argues for the immense benefits of using intuitive, fascia-based movement practice over conventional exercise protocols.PLUS, Joanne gives you a sneak peek into her yet-to-be-published book, ‘Myofascial Magic in Action'. So listen in for a deep, thought-provoking conversation that might just change how you think about movement (and ducks) forever. In this week's episode I interview Dinah Siman, a wonderful multi-talented teacher who practices Pilates, Yoga and Gyrotonic™, and has made her name in recent years by specialising in Menopause Pilates. Now also an author, Dinah aims to impassion movement teachers to celebrate menopause and give confidence to support students during this transformative phase. We talk about both the history and the current understanding of menopause, Dinah generously shares her own journey, and I especially love her thoughts about the opportunities menopause can offer if it's well understood and well supported. Regardless of your personal practice or what you teach, this book truly is written from the heart and designed to give everyone a sense of confidence and well-being in what can be a difficult time to navigate. Written with Dinah's lively sense of humour and backed by science (but not loaded to be a ‘heavy read') we get to chat about how the book works, why it felt so important to write, and why it's a must-buy for anyone who is (or works with) women in movement!! So I really hope you enjoy this conversation and find a lot of value in it. This episode is inspired by important questions we're very often asked by movement teachers about cueing and language.So... What exactly do we all mean by the word Stretch? Or Stabilise? Or Strengthen? Or Stiffen? Is Stress always a bad thing, or can it actually be a good thing sometimes? We explore each word and its implications, as well as how we can use them wisely….or not so wisely!!Again and again, we hear these 5 ‘S words' come up, regardless of the particular modality a teacher is using, whether it is Pilates, or Yoga or 5 Rhythms, or Dance or Personal Training or Martial Arts - whatever you may teach. It's crucial to consider these words carefully in order to enhance how the practice, whatever it is, makes sense to the person you are teaching. And of course, Cueing, Seeing, and Guiding clients well requires us to use a language THEY understand….this is not so much a formula as a discussion about the ingredients!!Hopefully there's some important food for thought here for you, to enhance the delicious movements you already create for the people you work with…Enjoy!MORE INFOVisit https://myofascialmagic.com/homeFOLLOW US ON INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/myofascial_magicGET IN TOUCHEmail us on info@myofascialmagic.com or DM us on InstagramYOU CAN ALSO WATCH THIS EPISODE ON THE JOANNE AVISON YOUTUBE CHANNEL!https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFz7SM_4q7tQpdgEtjooAQgPodcast and video produced and edited by Megan Bay Dorman SIGN UP TO THE JOANNE AVISON NEWSLETTER Simply scroll down to ‘Join Our Collective' and pop in your details. Myofascial Magic in Action is not a method – it's a standard available for all the different methods we teach and learn in movement. It raises the game around the difference we can make to ourselves and our clients, whatever modality we choose. Focusing particularly on Yoga and Pilates, we make the important distinction between “delicious” bespoke movement and "fast food" one-size-fits-all movement... We also share stories about the highlights and lowlights of teaching - see if you recognise your own experiences here! In this episode Paul and Joanne respond to a question they received about the value of Neural Flossing or Spinal Flossing. The question “to floss or not to floss?” is one worth considering – and even if you disagree, this conversation might expand the questions you ask! Joanne wasn't entirely sure what the term meant, so by asking Paul, this conversation unfolded. It isn't intended to ruffle any feathers or diminish the work of very well-intentioned therapists, but we do challenge the notion of how valuable “flossing” is - by the interpretation we use. In any event, it is super clear that the value of micromovements might just provide a simpler answer to the problems that “flossing” is intended to resolve...
