How IUL Fits in a Balanced Approach to Tax-Free Retirement

This episode of The Power of Zero Show is part of David McKnight's conversation with Caleb Guilliams and Tom Wall, PhD. David touches upon the “dangerous partnership” between the American people and the IRS. David is an advocate for a balanced, comprehensive, approach to tax-free retirement – he explains why that's the case. One of the things David likes about IULs is the fact that they can perform specific applications that no other stream of income, such as Roth IRAs and Roth 401(k)s, can do. David goes over the unique trait of each of the streams of tax-free income he sees as key components of “the Holy Grail of financial planning”. A Roth IRA, for example, gives you immediate liquidity, while a Roth 401(k) gives you a match. A Roth Conversion allows you to convert an unlimited amount of assets to tax-free. Taking money out of your IRA up to your standard deduction allows you to get a deduction on the front end, grow your money tax-deferred, and take your money out tax-free. An IUL, on the other hand, enables you to get a death benefit in advance, for the purpose of paying for long-term care. A balanced, comprehensive, approach to tax-free retirement capitalizes on all the nooks and crannies in the IRS tax code. David is in agreement with a recent Ernst & Young study inviting people to have 30% of their retirement savings go towards cash-value life insurance. What should we be focusing on? It's an essential question for all of us… but for those in the cybersecurity game, it's critical. Focusing on the wrong things here can be *costly.* Or so says Neatsun Ziv, Co-Founder and CEO of OX Security, in this *#CybersecurityByDesign* conversation with Sam Rehman, EPAM's CISO and SVP. Ziv says that, when it comes to fixing code, “95% of the things” that organizations work on have “zero risk impact,” adding: “That is an insane amount of money that the organization should have spent creating a bigger gap between them and the competitors.” Managing risk is indeed a major challenge for contemporary organizations. “There's no such thing as one single application anymore,” says Rehman, who wonders: “How do you manage the inherent risk from all these components?” Ziv says the answer is about getting clients to focus on what's critical to them. There's a need to distinguish between vulnerability, theoretical risk and actual practical risk. What is a practical risk? It means getting clients to recognize, as an organization: “This is what I'm concerned about.” “I always tell people the risk is managed,” adds Rehman, who says that approach is underpinned by asking questions such as “What's your security posture?” and assessing a client's risk tolerance. “You need to be smart about the investment,” says Ziv. He notes that this is where experienced leaders become practical. He gets them to answer questions like: What's exposed? What's internal? What do you want to replace first? How do we do it? Ultimately, he says, it's getting clients to be mature enough to say that they'd focus on the “5% [of efforts] that would actually make a difference in the first year or the second year.” The trick is taking a balanced approach, and the guys bring the idea of balance into the realms of supply chain and open source. We leave you with a warning: Listening might have a serious impact on your own security posture. Click play to better focus your cybersec priorities! Birthday parties are a great example of how the true power of a “minimalish” life isn't in less for the sake of less, rather it's about intentionality. In this episode, I share how our family personally approaches birthday parties - from why we do them at all, to how many kids are invited, to gifts and goody bags and themes! Biggest takeaway: Minimalism isn't the lens through which I view life. It's a symptom of living intentionally…because inevitably, only the essential will shine. But I don't look at life as a challenge to do or have the least possible. There's a difference there, and the former is much more freeing! Welcome to the Green Rush, a weekly conversation at the intersection of cannabis, psychedelics, the capital markets, and culture, produced by KCSA Podcast Labs. Today, we have a special episode featuring our newest production, Alternatively Speaking. In our debut season, we're diving into a revolutionary concept in health span, longevity, and healthcare. Our hosts sat down with Dr. Moshe Szyf, a pioneering figure in the field of epigenetics with a career spanning over three and a half decades. A founding figure in behavioral and psychiatric epigenetics, Dr. Szyf has authored over 300 influential papers that have significantly contributed to our understanding of how environmental factors and behaviors can influence gene expression without altering the DNA sequence itself.  Dr. Szyf serves as Chairman, CEO, and Chief Scientific Officer of HKG Epitherapeutics, focusing on developing epigenetic tools for clinical medicine, early disease detection, and personalized healthcare. He also currently holds the prestigious position of James McGill Professor of Pharmacology and Therapeutics at McGill University in Montreal, where he also holds the GlaxoSmithKline Chair in Pharmacology.  Podcast Highlights: Introduction to Epigenetics (00:11 - 02:37): Dr. Moshe Szyf is introduced as a pioneer in epigenetics. The concept of epigenetics is explained as the "software" that programs DNA, influencing how genes function without changing the DNA sequence itself. HKG Epitherapeutics and Epigenetic Testing (02:38 - 06:05): Discussion of Dr. Szyf's company, HKG Epitherapeutics, which develops epigenetic tests for early disease detection, aging assessment, and health monitoring. Epigenetics vs. Traditional Testing (06:06 - 09:44): Explanation of how epigenetic testing differs from traditional blood tests and genetic testing, offering insights into the dynamic changes happening at the DNA level. Consumer Impact and Health Empowerment (09:45 - 14:42): Examples of how consumers have used epigenetic tests to gain insights into their biological age and health status, leading to lifestyle changes. COVID-19's Impact on Healthcare Autonomy (29:38 - 33:40): Discussion on how the pandemic has led to increased public interest in personal health management and a shift towards more patient autonomy in healthcare decisions. Future of Precision Medicine (39:12 - 42:06): Dr. Szyf's views on the role of epigenetics in precision medicine, particularly in guiding personalized drug treatments and lifestyle interventions. Ethical Considerations and Balanced Approach to Longevity (34:55 - 39:11): Dr. Szyf's perspective on extreme anti-aging approaches, emphasizing the importance of balance and quality of life over extreme life extension methods. Future Developments in Epigenetics (43:25 - 45:37): Discussion of anticipated breakthroughs in epigenetic technology, including improved accuracy in testing and applications for early detection of various chronic diseases. In this episode of the Building HVAC Science Podcast, Eric Kaiser is joined by Marco Radocaj from Balance HVAC, who shares insights into his HVAC journey. Marco starts by discussing his background, from an unexpected entry into the HVAC field through his father-in-law's air conditioning company to learning on the job as a new technician with no prior experience. His humorous story of hosing off a generator during his first day illustrates his initial lack of HVAC knowledge and the steep learning curve he faced. Marco explains the philosophy behind Balance HVAC, emphasizing their commitment to improving how homes are balanced regarding enclosure, occupants, and mechanical systems. He highlights the importance of addressing more than just the cooling function, aiming for a holistic approach to home comfort, where systems are measured and fine-tuned to optimize airflow and insulation. He shares his experiences transitioning from working in his family's HVAC business to starting Balance HVAC, a new company focusing on thoughtful HVAC installation and attic restoration. Throughout the episode, Marco dives into attic restoration processes and how his team uses tools like thermal imaging and pressure balancing to ensure the homes they work on are more comfortable and efficient. He discusses the importance of communication with customers, sharing how Balance HVAC involves clients in the process by educating them on the science behind the solutions. The episode ends with Marco reflecting on his passion for elevating industry standards and his excitement about contributing to meaningful improvements in HVAC services. Marco's Business: https://www.balance-hvac.com/ Marco was interviewed by R and R magazine in June 2024: https://www.randrmagonline.com/articles/90866-mold-and-the-need-for-attic-restoration More on Balance's approach: We prioritize the thoughtful alignment of a home's enclosure and mechanical systems. Balance recognizes that homes built two decades ago were designed to "breathe," allowing for natural airflow to regulate temperature and moisture levels. However, modern construction methods and materials have shifted towards creating tighter homes that are not meant to breathe in the same way. This shift presents challenges, as features like energy-efficient windows, cooler attic environments due to improved roofing materials, and encapsulated attics can inadvertently lead to increased moisture, humidity, and environments conducive to mold growth. These issues can arise when homes are not properly aligned with modern building practices, potentially resulting in discomfort, poor indoor air quality, and health hazards. Marco's deep understanding of how homes are designed to perform allows Balance to address these challenges effectively. By identifying homes that are underperforming or straddling building codes, Balance can implement attic restorations that ensure optimal environmental control. This means creating spaces that are not only comfortable but also dry and healthy for occupants. Through a combination of optimal insulation techniques, strategic ventilation solutions, and moisture management strategies, Balance helps achieve the perfect balance between energy efficiency and indoor environmental quality. Their approach is tailored to each home's unique needs and budget, ensuring lasting improvements that enhance both comfort and peace of mind for homeowners. This episode was recorded in September 2024.

Dr. Munez emphasizes the three key requirements of a healthy diet: meeting nutritional needs, managing hunger and satiety, and being enjoyable. He criticizes the carnivore diet for its restriction of plant-based foods and highlights the importance of inclusivity and diversity in dietary patterns. The discussion concludes with a conversation about finding balance in nutrition for children and avoiding a negative relationship with food. In this conversation, Joey Munoz, John Arpino, and David Roden discuss various topics related to nutrition and healthy eating. They talk about their approaches to encouraging healthy food choices in their families, the importance of modeling behaviors, and the negative effects of blaming children for poor dietary behaviors. They also discuss the challenges of navigating family dynamics and social situations when it comes to food choices. The conversation touches on the misconceptions and fear-mongering surrounding fad diets, the importance of a balanced and sustainable approach to nutrition, and the need to focus on overall health and happiness rather than obsessing over specific food choices. They emphasize the importance of education, practicality, and finding what works best for each individual's journey towards a healthier lifestyle.TakeawaysEducation is crucial in improving one's relationship with food and body.Fad diets often miss the mark in meeting the three key requirements of a healthy diet: meeting nutritional needs, managing hunger and satiety, and being enjoyable. The carnivore diet restricts plant-based foods and overlooks the nutritional benefits of fruits and vegetables. In nutrition for children, it is important to provide healthy food options, emphasize activity, and allow for some flexibility and enjoyment.Finding balance in nutrition is key to avoiding a negative relationship with food. Encouraging healthy food choices in children involves modeling behaviors and allowing them to make their own choices.Blaming children for poor dietary behaviors is counterproductive and shifts the responsibility away from the adults.Family dynamics and social situations can present challenges when it comes to food choices, but setting boundaries and being strong in your choices is important.Fad diets often rely on fear-mongering and misinformation, and it's important to focus on a balanced and sustainable approach to nutrition.Education, practicality, and finding what works best for each individual are key to achieving a healthier lifestyle.

Carbohydrates: Focus on complex carbs, with a one-to-one ratio with protein for fat loss and a higher ratio for muscle gain. Fats: Typically two servings above protein intake. Dr. Novitsky explains how to eyeball portions using simple visual cues, making it easy to follow the program without needing a scale or measuring cups. Benefits of Mindful Macros® One of the standout benefits of Mindful Macros® is its ability to maintain muscle mass while promoting fat loss. This approach is also friendly on blood sugar levels, making it a sustainable and healthy way to eat. Dr. Novitsky shares a compelling story from Dr. Komal Patil-Sisodia, an endocrinologist who successfully used Mindful Macros® to transform her body composition and improve her metabolic health. Practical Tips and Upcoming Program Dr. Novitsky provides practical tips on how to get started with Mindful Macros®, emphasizing the importance of getting hungry first, observing fullness, and allowing feelings. She also teases an upcoming program that will include detailed protein charts, recipes, and step-by-step guidance to help individuals become their own nutrition experts. Conclusion Dr. Novitsky concludes by encouraging listeners to start the Muscles & Mindset strength training program, which can set the foundation for incorporating the nutrition program. CFO Thought Leader

“I see the fear of failure as being so detrimental to so many people early in their career. In people's minds, failing is often outsized, but most of the time, the things you're dealing with when you're up and coming are expected to involve some failure. That's how you learn,” reflects Eric Emans, the CFO of Nintex. Emans tell us his career was built using the power of learning from mistakes and driving an expectation-based culture in finance. In fact, Emans views failure as a critical learning tool. Starting his career in juvenile rehabilitation, Emans tell us he gained unique insights into human behavior and communication, which later influenced his approach to leadership. When Emans transitioned to finance, he was determined to understand the business holistically, not just through numbers. At Bluecore, where he first stepped into a CFO role, Emans emphasized the importance of building strong relationships within the organization. He relied on mentorship and collaboration to navigate new challenges, openly seeking feedback from colleagues and industry veterans. This approach helped him avoid common pitfalls and develop a nuanced understanding of financial operations. As CFO of Nintex, Emans has continued to foster a culture where team members are encouraged to go beyond their job descriptions. He uses the metaphor of the left hand and right hand to describe the importance of both controllership and FP&A in his leadership. “My head of FP&A and my controller need to be my right and left hand. Not only do they need to be talented, but I need to be able to speak to them about almost everything going on in the company,” he says. Emans believes in empowering his team to think critically, challenge assumptions, and bring new insights to the table. “If a finance person just hands me back the analysis I asked for, that's great. But if they go further and provide additional insights, that's what makes the difference between a good and a great organization,” he says. It perhaps little surprise Emans's leadership style is driven by continuous learning. He advocates for finance professionals to engage with different disciplines, understand the broader business context, and not be afraid to make mistakes.
