Joni Fedders admits she wasn't always the best employee. Like a lot of entrepreneurs, she would "buck" the rules. So while she was a successful brand manager at IAMS Pet Food, she was always destined to run her own show. After building and selling her business, her former CEO at IAMS, Clay Mathile asked her to be the CEO at Aileron, his organization and campus to help teach business owners to run their business rather than have the business run them. In this episode of TEEE, Joni shares how she's learned to really communicate and give proper direction to others. You'll enjoy Joni's candor, humility and eagerness to learn.

More with Moore is Action Catalyst host Dan Moore's reflections and commentary on discussions with each of his esteemed and accomplished guests. In this segment, Dan dissects Episode 297, with Joni Fedders, President, Facilitator, and Leadership Coach at Aileron.
As a past business owner, Joni understands the risks, rewards, and challenges that ownership and professional management bring. She had the opportunity at Iams as a Brand Manager to live in a professionally managed organization where she saw first-hand how strategy, strong leadership and culture can fuel a company to do great things. After Iams, Joni co-founded a technology services company and became an Aileron client herself, taking the Course for Presidents, establishing an outside Board of Directors and utilizing strategic planning. The company grew from 2 to 100 employees in five years, was a finalist for the Ernst & Young Cincinnati Entrepreneur of the Year award, and was named by the Cincinnati Business Courier as one of the 25 fastest-growing companies in the region. After selling this business, she and her husband just couldn't stop and bought a second business in decorative packaging that they operated for seven years before successfully selling. In her role as President, Joni oversees Aileron's strategic direction, culture, and operational activities. Her leadership and energy inspire and motivate the Aileron team and the community as we strive to raise the quality of life, one private business at a time. Joni was honored with the “Forty Under Forty” award and received her bachelor's degree in business from Miami University (the real one, in Ohio). She obtained her MBA from Xavier University. As college sweethearts, Joni and her husband Jim have been married for 27 years; they have three great children, a golden retriever and a small mutt who thinks he's a cross between a mastiff and a pit bull. Family time is a crucial priority for Joni and they enjoy skiing, tubing, running, fishing, sports, eating Chipotle (don't ask Joni to cook – she can't), family events and vacations. Show Highlights: It's a whole different ballgame when you can't say, "I don't like the way they're doing things, because they are you." —Joni FeddersIt's fascinating how many thoughts we have behind our emotions and actions. —Joni FeddersThought, Emotion, Action is a powerful, simple tool that helps people make change. —Joni FeddersYou hit walls all day long, which is more of a sign of opportunity and learning than anything else. —Joni FeddersWe tend to make judgments that are bad, and sometimes they are, but it's more about what can I do in this situation more than what I can't. It's being conscious to what that's telling you. —Joni FeddersOur brains are bad neighborhoods when we're there by ourselves. —Joni FeddersWe usually all feel stuck when there are things that are out of our control. —Joni FeddersI'm not sure mediocrity is an option in many places anymore. —Joni FeddersLook at your situation's parallel. How does what I do at home parallel this decision at work? —Joni Fedders Joni's final thoughts: I'm a believer that when you're really stuck, call in some reinforcements. Get people to ask you good questions and shift the perspective. The Learning Leader Show With Ryan Hawk Episode #265: Clay Mathile - Self Made Billionaire Shares His Keys To Success Former CEO and owner of The Iams Company, Clay is the founder and Chairman of the Board of Aileron. He believes strongly in free enterprise and has a high respect for business owners who risk their capital to employ others. Clay attributes professional management as one of the key reasons he was able to grow Iams to a $1 billion organization. In 1999, the Mathile family sold Iams to international conglomerate Procter & Gamble for the sum of $2.3 billion. The Learning Leader Show "I bought the business with borrowed money. I was scared to death. I didn't know how to run a business. I had to learn." -- Clay Mathile describes his feelings after buying Iams Show Notes: Sustaining excellence: Vision of what they want to do and where they want to go A good idea of how to get there Committed to their vision and idea Clay's 4 things he wanted Own his own business Have that business be something that was excellent and stood for something To help entrepreneurs grow To use technology learned to help develop food for indigenous people Was hired at Iams in 1970 as the 7th employee It took five years to figure out the problems and five more years to fix it Convinced Paul Iams to sell Iams to him in 1975 (half) and the rest in 1981 Borrowed money to buy it Why Clay? "Paul had seen me work and seen me make an impact on the business. I spent a lot of time on the sales and marketing strategy." Focused on the breeders and vets. The people who influence the actual user. Clay was ahead of his time. Went to President's Course in 1982 at American Management Association "I'm scared to death, I don't know how to run a business. I needed to learn." The key was hiring a President and super charging their growth What went in the decision to sell the company? Sat down with his family to decide what each child wanted to do - "They all wanted to chase their own dreams, their own passions. They didn't want to own Iams." The CEO of Procter & Gamble called... Clay takes us inside the room to negotiate the deal: "We told them what our number was... And they exceeded it. It ended up with $2.3 billion." Starting the family office in anticipation of the sale of his business -- To build a new organization for the future. Aileron started as the center for entrepreneur organizations in 1994 Aileron - "We give lift and guidance to the business owner." "How can I possibly repay you?" -- Clay said to his mentors. They said, "Don't pay me... Just pass it on to others." "People are looking for immediate help for a problem they are having right now. And we've designed this place to help them solve those problems." Been married for 55 years, have raised a successful family... How? "When I was home, I was home. I was present. I wasn't playing golf or out with the boys." Keys: "Trust... You have to like the person too. Like hanging out with them." Why everyone should have a board? "They see things that you don't see. A strategic overview. It's something you can't do yourself." "After you've been in business for 10 years, 75% of all problems are because of you." Having a "Personal Board of Advisors" "I recommend all senior executives have mentors. All you have to do is ask. I've never had anyone turn me down when I've asked them." "Build trust and mutual respect." Culture "I built it so I could work in it." "I had strange things in my management style. I was promoting empowerment before it was popular." "Most people do the right things for the right reasons if you put them in the right environment." "The value of the individual is so important. Treat them with respect. They feel important and special. I saw every single employee at least once per year all over the world." "People are inherently good." Bad leaders = "Big egos, not trusting of others, insecure people." "When you push people outside of their comfort zone, you can't beat on them when they fail. You have to let them make mistakes." Individual contributor to manager jump... Advice: "You have to accept the fact that management is a profession as anything else is a profession." "Just because you're the best sales person doesn't mean you'll be the best sales person." "As a manager, you're job is to develop others." "You need to manage spontaneity, responsiveness. Don't react, be proactive." A good example of a proactive leader is a fire chief: They analyze the situation prior to making decisions. Manage in crisis "In 1984, we built Iams University to help people learn..." Most passionate about? "Teaching people, focus on the dreams of the people. Read the book Dream Manager. That's what we're all about." Example of a typical day: "I do about anything I want to do." One dream for Aileron -- "It will survive forever." Learning Leader = You have to be a continuous learner How much of his success is luck? "60% luck. Be in the right place at the right time." "Your listeners need to think about passing it on. To help others." Use the "Get To Know You Document" "We give lift and guidance to the business owner." Some conversations are easier to have than others. I am pretty sure I could talk to Joni Fedders for hours. Insightful, exuberant and quick-witted all come to mind when thinking through the chat we just had. It makes me smile when she talks about coming through the farmlands of Ohio and rolling into Oxford and onto campus. All Miamians can relate to that feeling. Two of her children graduated from Miami and her third is on campus now. She is now the President of Aileron, a national non-profit organization which helps business owners strategically manage and grow their business (almost like an accelerator for the small business community around the world).

Hydraulic systems can suffer from a number of abnormal situations. Pump low pressure, reservoir overheat, Reservoir low air pressure and reservoir low level. The electric pumps on the blue and yellow systems can also overheat. All of these will lead to the ECAM requesting that you switch off the pump. If this occurs to the green or yellow systems the PTU, if it is available, will transfer power, not fluid, between the systems recovering the affected system. The blue system can not be powered by the PTU. If the PTU is not available or the procedure ask you to turn it off, the failed system will not be powered. This leads to a single system failure. In the case of a single system failure the aircraft will remain in normal law so all the associated protections are available. Certain flight controls will be affected based on which system has failed but ultimately Aileron, elevator and Rudder control surfaces will remain powered so controlling the aircraft will be conventional. Flaps and or slats will be slow depending on which of the systems has failed, we covered these in the original hydraulics podcast so it maybe worth having a listen again to refresh your memory. Certain spoilers will be unserviceable. Things start to become more interesting when 2 hydraulic systems fail. When this occurs the Autopilot will be lost so priority must be given to flying the aircraft and stabilising the flight path, the aircraft will also revert to alt law in 2 of the cases, so this, as usual, means direct law once the gear is extended. The ECAM will display LAND ASAP red, this is a timely reminder that you are now operating on a single hydraulic system, why have we lost 2? what happens if we lose the last system? We will cover all 3 cases of Dual hydraulics failure in some detail shortly but lets just broadly go over what you can expect for each case. If you remember these as a guide. G+B = Handling Problem G+Y = Braking Problem B+ Y = As the green system is available this is the least demanding of the 3 scenarios Airbus designed the summary pages to give us all of the information we need to help us during the cruise, approach, landing and if necessary the Go around. in the FCOM Pro-ABN-01- Use of Summaries section, more background information is provided. it states that the summaries are QRH procedures created to help the flight crew to perform actions. In ANY case the flight crew should apply the ECAM first, this includes the STATUS page. This is an important point, it is all too easy in a high workload situation to divert our attention to performance calculations and other tasks before completing the ECAM. The ECAM's for dual hydraulics are not actually that long and the status page will give you valuable information as to the state of the aircraft increasing your situational awareness.
The recurring Beast Wars TV series re-watch continues, and on this episode the sixth, seventh, and eighth episodes of the series gets a retrospective analysis from the Twincast crew. After this, multiple questions from listeners of the show are answered, with the first regarding Transformers toy lines with thematic play patterns such as Hasbro's Generations Combiner Wars and Titans Returns line-up. After looking into our crystal balls with the second listener question, we jump over to our third and final listener inquiry by talking about the balance between complexity and design considerations in Transformers toys. The ongoing Transformers comic from IDW Publishing has had it's 51st issue hit stands, and the podcast crew discusses their thoughts on the issue and its place within the overall storyline. The show winds down with two roundtable discussions, the first of which involves collecting "Holy Grails" and what each cast member considers to fit that category. The recurring "Bragging Rights" segment returns to end the show, with a twist that ends up encompassing multiple cast members' list of recent Tranformers product acquisitions.
Greg Verdine has evolved from merely being a Harvard prof, to consulting for big pharma, to starting biotech companies, to being a Venture Partner, and even to co-founding a non-profit institute – not just sequentially, but largely in parallel. He has teamed up with Third Rock Ventures, TPG Biotech, AppleTree Partners, and he unveils his brand new gig with WuXi Ventures. Greg co-founded the biotechs Enanta (ENTA), Tokai (TKAI), Gloucester (now Celgene), Aileron, Warp Drive, WaVe (WVE), and Fog. His day job today, if forced to list just one, is CSO of Warp Drive Bio. He reveals a couple of secrets about Warp Drive strategy and lifts the fog off of Fog Pharma, his latest – and still stealth – newco. As different as these companies are, a common theme runs through them: to cure the incurable by drugging the undruggable. With apologies to Star Trek, that is Greg’s personal mission: to boldly go where no drug has gone before. In fact Greg wants to blow up the conventional meaning for the word "drug". He sees beyond the pharma industry’s small molecules plus the biotech industry’s biologics, because they seem positively “puny” in the context of human biology. And he has clever tricks and other modalities at his disposal – not to mention the blueprints: 135,000 bacterial genomes, where the answers cannot hide.

This week's podcast features Fred Warmbier, CEO of Finishing Technology and Kelly Allan, Senior Associate of Kelly Allan Associates and Chair of the Deming Institute Advisory Council. Fred and Kelly discuss their New York Times blog that documents the Deming journey of Finishing Technology, a metal finishing company in Ohio. Fred first discovered the Deming message in September 2013 when he attended a Deming Institute 2.5 day seminar presented in partnership with Aileron, a non-profit near Dayton (Tipp City), Ohio dedicated to, “Raising the Quality of Life in America”. Fred attended with staff from his company and came away excited to explore how to change from the old way of running things. He was driven by self-insight, a passion to study and a desire to help others, while understanding his business system and how to operate it more effectively and efficiently. After additional reading and further study, Fred was motivated to look at all elements of his business differently and through a new lens. He began working with Kelly and as these new insights gained momentum, Fred felt it important to document his experiences, which were often humbling and comical. Around this time, The NY Times ran a story on companies unhooked from commission-based sales, which led to a multi-part NY Times blog, that documents Fred's journey. The goal of the blog is to educate, inform, entertain, make a difference and be a call to action. This fascinating journey will energize executives, entrepreneurs and others who are always (as Fred and Kelly discuss) probing, looking, thinking and determined to figure things out.
