This week on the Disaster Podcast we chat with Seamus Leary ,MPA, CEM about leading through catastrophe: when systems fail. He is President of Meridian Strategic Services, Inc. and is an emergency management expert who worked at the state and local levels and later with FEMA at the Federal level. With responses to numerous major disasters, Seamus brings a unique perspective to how emergency managers can cope when all the usual systems break down. The episode is co-hosted by Sam Bradley and Jamie Davis. Scroll down for Podcast Discussion Summary Thank you as always to Paragon Medical Education Group for their long-term support of the Disaster Podcast. Dr. Joe Holley and the team at Paragon continue to provide excellent and customized disaster response training to jurisdictions around the U.S. and internationally as well. Podcast Discussion Summary FEMA’s Disaster Response Methods Seamus Leary, president of Meridian Strategic Services, discussed his experience in emergency management, including his role as a federal coordinating officer for FEMA Region 2 and his work as a county emergency manager. He explained FEMA’s disaster classification system, highlighting that catastrophic disasters, or Level 1 events, require national-level responses involving resources from across the country. Seamus shared insights from his deployment to St. Thomas ahead of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, emphasizing the collaborative efforts required to address such catastrophic events. Enhancing Disaster Response Strategies The discussion focused on disaster response challenges, with Seamus sharing his experience in St. Thomas after a storm where they faced significant communication and infrastructure failures. They discussed how multiple issues can cascade, making it difficult to manage complex disasters, and emphasized the importance of having both digital and traditional emergency management tools to handle various scenarios. Jamie contributed by mentioning their county’s use of both digital screens and physical maps for nuclear incident planning, highlighting the value of having multiple systems in place. Blending Digital and Traditional Communication The group discussed the importance of combining digital media skills with traditional communication methods, emphasizing the value of explaining the “why” to younger team members who excel in digital but may lack traditional skills. Seamus shared his experience as an emergency manager during Hurricane Irene, highlighting the need for rest and backup plans for teams working around the clock, and Jamie referenced Joe’s practice of maintaining a notebook of contacts during responses to quickly access needed resources. Emergency Response Coordination Strategies Seamus emphasized the importance of building relationships with local emergency responders and understanding cultural differences when working in unfamiliar communities. He and Sam discussed the need for contingency plans when communication systems fail, such as having backup power and redundant communication channels. Seamus also highlighted the challenge of managing disasters while dealing with personal emergencies and suggested leveraging non-traditional resources and coordinating with neighboring jurisdictions to overcome resource shortages. Emergency Management and Community Resilience The meeting focused on emergency management and disaster response strategies. Seamus, an experienced emergency manager, discussed the importance of training organizations to be adaptable and flexible during crises, emphasizing the need to prepare for when systems fail rather than when they work. He highlighted the importance of partnerships with non-traditional organizations like churches and hardware stores, as well as the role of community leaders in fostering relationships with local businesses. Wrap up and updates The team went through contact information and the team encouraged listeners to stay safe. The group discussed the role of specialized training, with Jamie highlighting the sponsorship of the Disaster Podcast by Paragon Medical Education Group. Bu bölümde görüşlerine yer verebildiğim arkadaşlarım sırasıyla: (03:20) Feyza Demir, (07:55) Yasemin Karakaya, (12:07) Mürsel Çavuş, (16:06) Bengü İlhan, (17:42) Bahadır Balibaşa, (20:10) Öngün Şumnulu, (23:49) Aycan Acar Şahin, (27:03) Ekin Akkol, (30:30) Mete Yurtsever, (31:38) Ebru Başaran, (35:15) Suat Soy, (37:03) Feyza Demir, (41:47) Cem Çağatay Karaali, (44:07) Bahadır Balibaşa, (48:39) Yasemin Karakaya, (50:41) Öngün ŞumnuluSupport the show
. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
How do you take a free language app and turn it into a multi billion juggernaut that users are literally addicted to?In this episode of TruthWorks, Jessica and Patty sit down with Cem Kansu, the Chief Product Officer at Duolingo. Cem has spent nearly a decade architecting the product strategy that grew Duolingo from a struggling startup into the world's #1 education app. This isn't just a conversation about "product-market fit." It's a raw look at the operational culture required to run thousands of A/B tests a year without losing your soul. Cem pulls back the curtain on Duolingo's famous "unhinged" marketing, the reality of managing a "freemium" model that actually makes money, and why they decided to make their AI mascot, Lily, a depressed teenager.Key topics discussed include:The "Mini-CEO" Mindset: Why Duolingo empowers product managers to run their own P&Ls and how that changes the culture of accountability.Monetization vs. Mission: The hard conversations and trade-offs involved in making money while keeping the core product free for millions. The Truth About Gamification: How to use streaks, leaderboards, and "passive-aggressive" notifications to drive retention without burning out your team (or your users).Hiring for Taste: Why data is critical, but product intuition is what actually builds a brand people love.Navigating the AI Shift: How Duolingo is integrating GenAI to teach effectively, not just efficiently.Whether you are scaling a product team or trying to build a culture that embraces experimentation, Cem offers a transparent look at the machinery behind the owl.

2025'in son bölümü ile karşınızdayım. Support the show

Niels and Cem reflect on a year marked by concentration, confidence, and growing structural fragility beneath calm markets. They examine extreme positioning, record low cash levels, and the quiet dominance of reflexive flows over fundamentals. Cem challenges common readings of volatility, explains where real fear hides in options markets, and outlines why tail exposure becomes critical late in cycles. The discussion broadens into portfolio construction, questioning the legacy of 60/40 investing and the illusion of diversification built during falling-rate decades. Grounded in history, market structure, and political cycles, this conversation offers a disciplined framework for navigating regimes where leverage, policy, and inequality quietly redefine risk.-----50 YEARS OF TREND FOLLOWING BOOK AND BEHIND-THE-SCENES VIDEO FOR ACCREDITED INVESTORS - CLICK HERE-----Follow Niels on Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube or via the TTU website.IT's TRUE ? – most CIO's read 50+ books each year – get your FREE copy of the Ultimate Guide to the Best Investment Books ever written here. And you can get a free copy of my latest book “Ten Reasons to Add Trend Following to Your Portfolio” here.Learn more about the Trend Barometer here.Send your questions to info@toptradersunplugged.comAnd please share this episode with a like-minded friend and leave an honest Rating & Review on iTunes or Spotify so more people can discover the podcast.Follow Cem on Twitter.Episode TimeStamps: 00:00 - Introduction to the Systematic Investor Series00:49 - Geopolitical tensions beneath the surface of markets02:07 - Extreme bullish sentiment and record low cash levels04:12 - Margin use, positioning, and why this setup is fragile06:07 - Why the VIX fails as a true fear indicator11:48 - Buffett's concentration and risk management through quality16:27 - Leverage, Sharpe ratios, and misunderstood diversification21:02 - Trend following performance and late year positioning23:48 - Positioning, reflexivity, and market microstructure28:25 - Volatility traps and convexity before stress events31:06...

TableTable Briefings - For better informed decisions. From the crash of 1987 to today's era of correlation, Dredge reframes volatility not as fear, but freedom. Through his F1 “brakes” analogy, he reveals why protection enables performance, and how convexity builds resilience in an uncertain world. Together, they trace the arc from structured-product flows to demographics, fiscal repression, and the coming global “Hunger Games” for savings. A masterclass in compounding through uncertainty.-----50 YEARS OF TREND FOLLOWING BOOK AND BEHIND-THE-SCENES VIDEO FOR ACCREDITED INVESTORS - CLICK HERE-----Follow Niels on Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube or via the TTU website.IT's TRUE ? – most CIO's read 50+ books each year – get your FREE copy of the Ultimate Guide to the Best Investment Books ever written here. And you can get a free copy of my latest book “Ten Reasons to Add Trend Following to Your Portfolio” here.Learn more about the Trend Barometer here.Send your questions to info@toptradersunplugged.comAnd please share this episode with a like-minded friend and leave an honest Rating & Review on iTunes or Spotify so more people can discover the podcast.Follow Cem on Twitter.Follow David on X.Episode TimeStamps: 00:01:29 – Cem introduces David Dredge live from Munich.00:03:28 – Dredge recalls arriving in Asia before the 1987 crash.00:05:06 – The F1 brakes analogy—why protection enables speed.00:07:45 – The “preserve and enhance” portfolio that defied 65/35.00:10:57 – Rethinking 60/40 and the illusion of diversification.00:14:33 – Cem on $500 trillion of correlated assets.00:17:22 – Why covered calls lose to convexity over time.00:19:14 – Misreading 2022: correlation, not equities, was the risk.00:21:20 – When diversification fails, only convexity endures.00:27:13 – Value investing in volatility—buying what others suppress.00:37:48 – Euro...

Episode SummaryIn this thought-provoking episode, Todd DeVoe and Dan Scott explore “The Myth of Control”—a concept that challenges one of the most fundamental assumptions in emergency management: that we can control chaos. Drawing from philosophy, leadership theory, and real-world emergency operations, they unpack how the illusion of control shapes decisions, policies, and leadership under pressure. The hosts discuss the paradox that while control provides comfort and structure, it can also lead to rigidity and tunnel vision during crises. They explore the balance between preparedness and adaptability, and how embracing uncertainty can make leaders—and organizations—more resilient.Listeners will leave with a deeper understanding of why humility, trust, and systems thinking are essential for navigating disasters' unpredictable nature.Key Talking Points* What “control” means in emergency management and why it's an illusion.* The difference between command and influence in crisis leadership.* Stoic and philosophical insights on accepting uncertainty and focusing on what can be controlled.* How overconfidence and bureaucratic rigidity undermine effective response.* Real-world examples where flexibility outperformed strict adherence to plans.* Building cultures that prioritize adaptability, learning, and empowerment over control.* Emotional intelligence, trust, and psychological safety are essential in EOC leadership.* Practical strategies for letting go—trusting your team, systems, and training.Quotes to Remember“Control is the myth we tell ourselves to feel safe in the storm.” – Todd DeVoe“In crisis leadership, it's not about controlling every variable—it's about influencing outcomes through people.” – Dan ScottAbout the HostsTodd DeVoe, CEM, is the Editor-in-Chief of the Emergency Management Network and the Emergency Management Coordinator for the City of Inglewood.Dan Scott, CEM, is a regional emergency management leader and co-host of the EMN Podcast, bringing decades of operational experience and mentorship to the discussion.Listen & SubscribeAvailable on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and wherever you get your podcasts.Subscribe to the Emergency Management Network Newsletter for leadership insights, policy analysis, and community resilience stories. Show Notes: Socrates in the EOCEpisode Summary:In this episode of The Emergency Management Network, hosts Todd DeVoe and Dan Scott explore Socrates's timeless philosophy and how his method of inquiry, humility, and pursuit of wisdom apply to today's emergency operations centers (EOCs). Through the Socratic lens, we examine leadership under pressure, decision-making amidst uncertainty, and the value of questioning assumptions in complex incident management.Socrates taught that wisdom begins with recognizing ignorance — a deeply rooted principle in emergency management, where the unknown is ever-present. In this episode, Todd discusses how the “Socratic Method” can be used as a leadership tool to build trust, strengthen collaboration, and uncover blind spots in EOC decision-making.From ancient Athens to modern-day crisis coordination, Socrates in the EOC challenges us to think critically, communicate honestly, and lead with humility.Host: Todd T. DeVoe, CEM and Dan Scott, CEMProduced by: EMN MediaDuration: ~30 minutesTopics Covered:* What Socrates can teach modern leaders about uncertainty and truth.* Applying the Socratic Method to EOC decision-making and briefings.* The importance of intellectual humility in leadership.* Why “I don't know” is a strength, not a weakness.* Encouraging curiosity and dissent as tools for better outcomes.* Lessons for building resilient teams that think, not just react.Quotable Moment:“Socrates wasn't afraid of being wrong — he was afraid of being unexamined. In the EOC, that mindset can mean the difference between rigidity and resilience.”If you enjoyed this episode, subscribe to The Emergency Management Network wherever you get your podcasts. Cem Karsan joins Alan Dunne to chart a market running on more than just momentum. Beneath the surface: a structural liquidity engine, political incentives aligned with asset reflation, and a surge in non-correlated flows reshaping risk itself. As institutions scramble to catch up and volatility begins to rise with price, Cem draws on lessons from the late 90s to explain why the real story is not about valuation - but positioning. From AI's misunderstood impact to the growing role of options, gold, and crypto, this is a portrait of a regime defined not by fundamentals, but by reflex and constraint.-----50 YEARS OF TREND FOLLOWING BOOK AND BEHIND-THE-SCENES VIDEO FOR ACCREDITED INVESTORS - CLICK HERE-----Follow Niels on Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube or via the TTU website.IT's TRUE ? – most CIO's read 50+ books each year – get your FREE copy of the Ultimate Guide to the Best Investment Books ever written here. And you can get a free copy of my latest book “Ten Reasons to Add Trend Following to Your Portfolio” here.Learn more about the Trend Barometer here.Send your questions to info@toptradersunplugged.comAnd please share this episode with a like-minded friend and leave an honest Rating & Review on iTunes or Spotify so more people can discover the podcast.Follow Cem on Twitter.Follow Alan on XEpisode TimeStamps: 00:23 - What has been on our radar recently?02:00 - Industry performance update03:07 - Are current valuations a sign of a bubble?12:13 - The importance of reflexivity18:59 - The move towards non correlation is upon us22:55 - What is driving up asset prices?26:34 - When will the supply/demand imbalance normalize?31:56 - Reaching an uncontrollable situation35:47 - What are markets showing us about options?39:38 - Precious metals is the place to be42:26 - Is AI actually the game changer that we all expect it to be?52:07 - Will better technology = better performance?56:03 - A timeline for possible
