Listeners of Sew Much More that love the show mention:The Sew Much More podcast is an incredible resource for anyone in the workroom and window coverings industry. Ceil brings on a wide range of guests, from entrepreneurs to experienced professionals, who share their stories, struggles, and successes. As a solo upholsterer, I often feel isolated in my work, but listening to this podcast makes me feel like I'm sitting in a room with my peers. The interviews are personal and relatable, and I always find myself agreeing out loud with something a guest is saying.
One of the best aspects of this podcast is how open and honest the guests are about their experiences. They share valuable insights into running a business, dealing with challenges, and finding success in the industry. Each episode is unique because each guest has their own perspective and journey. Ceil does a fantastic job as the hostess, asking thoughtful questions and guiding the conversation. The show notes and links provided make it easy to follow up on resources mentioned during each episode.
If there's one downside to this podcast, it's that sometimes the episodes can be too focused on the window coverings industry specifically. While this is valuable for those in that field, listeners from other creative small businesses may not find as much relevance. However, even if you're not directly involved in the industry, there are still insights and lessons to be learned from each interview.
In conclusion, The Sew Much More podcast is a must-listen for those in the workroom and window coverings industry. It provides inspiration, education, and a sense of community for solo entrepreneurs like myself. Whether you're just starting out or have been in business for years like me, you'll find something valuable in every episode. Thank you to Ceil for creating such an amazing resource!

In 1999 Jes and Wes were on a quest to work for themselves and have more control over their own time. That's when they created Crown Upholstery. After 25 years they have definitely worked, but they have yet to gain much control over their time. Jesica is the 5th generation in her family to be enticed by the upholstery lifestyle. Growing up in her grandparents shop, in Glendale Arizona, she witnessed first hand the freedoms upholstery had to offer as well as the hard work one has to put in to be successful in this craft. Wes was raised in Maryland and had never known upholstery to be anything other than something you did to the interiors of cars. The sirens of upholstery began to sing to him on a visit to Jesica's grandparents house. He saw their home based shop and the countless processes that go into this craft and quickly fell in love. Having a background in auto mechanics he was already primed for the problem solving journey that upholstery provides. He took a few classes taught by Jesica's grandfather, Frank, and then began his apprenticeship with him after Frank saw the enthusiasm and attention to detail Wes had. Within a few years of walking into an upholstery shop for the first time, Wes was starting his own. It began in a tiny one car garage that shared space with laundry machines, holiday decorations and lawn equipment but it did the job. Jesica had experience in accounting and she's much better at organization and management of things so that made the decision of who would be boss really easy. They moved across country a couple of times searching for a place to settle down and eventually landed in east Tennessee. In the 17 years living and working in Knoxville they have established a reputation for quality upholstery and excellent customer service. For the majority of their upholstery career they have been a home based business. In 2018 they purchased their first commercial space. A 1920's grocery store with an apartment above. They were officially a business based home. Within a few years, and after hiring another upholsterer Crown Upholstery was ready for more growth. Jesica found and purchased another building in the same neighborhood. This allowed them to bring on another full-time upholsterer. Jesica was now coordinating the schedules of 3 upholsterers along with everything else that goes into running a business. They still live above the old upholstery shop but it is now a Hair salon that Jesica manages as well. There's a reason she won Knoxville's Women owned business of the year 2024. Even when they aren't working together they still enjoy spending time together. Whether it's camping, sifting through junks shops or riding bikes. They are rarely seen very far apart. Addie Conte was offered a job on a whim by a local Maryland drapery workroom in 2012. That first experience sparked her love for making beautiful things that continues today. Shortly after, a local seamstress was going out of business, and Addie was able to acquire all of their equipment and ta-da…Addie Designs, LLC was born. Marianne Henderson is the owner of Sandhill Designs and Upholstery. She is a dedicated wife and loving mother of three wonderful children, including girl/boy twins in their late thirties and a youngest son who is soon to turn 30. From an early age, she had a passion for sewing, starting with making her own Barbie clothes and later progressing to designing her own outfits. She saved her allowance to buy fabric and patterns and, after taking a single sewing class in junior high, continued to teach herself the craft. Although she was accepted into the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in San Francisco, a life-changing event altered her path just before she was set to attend. She spent nearly 30 years working in accounting, but it never fulfilled her passion. While working part-time as a bookkeeper and creating custom soft furnishings for a local furniture store, she had the opportunity to reupholster a child's chair. This sparked a love for the craft and a realization that upholstery was her true calling. Over the last 12 years, she has immersed herself in the world of upholstery, learning through YouTube videos, books, and online courses, including those offered by Kim Chagnon of Kim's Upholstery. Recently, she has expanded her skills to include window coverings. She is an active member of the National Upholstery Association and the Window Coverings Association of America. Mary Phillips is the owner of Phillips Window Workroom, a custom drapery and soft home furnishings workroom in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. Mary has been in the industry for over 40 years, first starting with upholstery with her Sister-In-Law, creating relationships with clients and vendors and then going off on her own out of the house. In 2003, Mary found a location in Chadds Ford and moved out of the house and the rest has been history! Mary has three children with her husband, Mike, a sweet dog Ruby and a huge loving family that loves spending time together and going on vacations to the beach or hanging by the pool. Callye is 26 years old and is Mary's daughter. She grew up in and out of the workroom. When Callye was 6, Mary moved out of the house. Through the years, Callye always appreciated that her Mom was able to come to all her sporting events, and could be there when she needed her since her Mom was her own boss. After going to West Chester University, and finishing right in the pandemic in May 2020, Callye didn't quite have a game plan. She spent a year and a half nannying before deciding to join the PWW team, and just celebrated three years with them. Callye enjoys the creative process, working with customers and designers and seeing their beautiful custom work come to life. Outside of the workroom, Callye coaches volleyball and still plays, (has a boyfriend), and loves spending time with family & friends and her three beautiful nephews! (Soon to be 4).
