280: What Does it Mean to Know Your Numbers   I am so excited to have you join us on the podcast today! I'm going to be joined by Courtney Bramlett, who is the director of marketing and operations here at Scarlet Thread Consulting. She also owns her own company, The Good Sower, and today, we're diving into an incredibly important topic: financial planning for interior designers. Maybe you've heard the buzzword over and over—know your numbers, know your financials—and it sounds great, but it has almost become an irritant, and you're still not sure what it means. Today, we're going to break down what it really means to understand the financials that are affecting your business strategy for interior designers and how these numbers impact your growth. We'll talk about how you can create a solid financial plan for interior designers that will help you grow your company in the way you envision. So, stick around—I'm thrilled to have you here!  Topics Mentioned: Financial understanding Profitability Cash Management Strategic Planning  Key Thoughts:  I think it is important for owners of companies to understand how money is made, how money flows through their company, and how they can determine the money that is left over after everything has been paid for.  Michele Williams    If you don't truly know what each type of profits is, you don't really know how much money you actually get to take home at the end of the day.  Courtney Bramlett   The reason that I focus on gross profit so much is because that is the number one indicator that tells me if I'm selling it at the right price and paying the right amount in cost of goods, but it's also the number that is telling me do I have enough to run the company and do what I need it to do as the owner?  Michele Williams    Profitability is tied to just raising your prices, and of course, that's a piece of it, but there's still a lot more that goes into being profitable.  Courtney Bramlett    Contact Michele: Email: Team@ScarletThreadConsulting.com Facebook: Scarlet Thread Consulting Instagram: @ScarletThreadATL Website: ScarletThreadConsulting.com LinkedIn: Michele Williams   References and Resources: Work with Me The Designers' Inner Circle - Become a Member Today    Understand Your Business Financials in Less than 8 Weeks / New Group Coaching Financial Courses at Scarlet Thread Consulting Profit First by Mike Michalowicz

We are going to talk about values, how they lead to setting expectations, and having accountability in our firms. It's not every day that we have everything set up so perfectly that everybody comes in and does what they do without questions or confusion about their job. We will talk through some of the things that you can do to set up practices that will help your employees or your contractors and those people that you work with all pulling in the same direction and going after the same thing. So, enjoy and listen in.  Topics Mentioned: Values Vision Expectations Accountability  Key Thoughts:  If we hire the right players, and we can draw the vision for them, they hopefully know what they're getting into, and they're coming in excited and with ideas.  Michele Williams    As you said, when you can get vulnerable as a business owner with this stuff, I think you get more help and you don't feel alone.  Courtney Bramlett    The more that people get constructive, positive feedback, the more they can keep going.  Michele Williams    The only person who suffers when you cannot hold someone accountable or get out of your comfort zone to hold someone accountable, the only one who suffers is you.  Courtney Bramlett    Contact Michele: Email: Team@ScarletThreadConsulting.com Facebook: Scarlet Thread Consulting Instagram: @ScarletThreadATL Website: ScarletThreadConsulting.com LinkedIn: Michele Williams   References and Resources: Work with Me Metrique Solutions The Five Dysfunctions of a Team The Designers' Inner Circle - Become a Member Today    CFO2Go The Five Dysfunctions of a Team by Patrick Lencioni It's Okay to Be the Boss by Bruce Tulgan Who by Geoff Smart and Randy Street Who Not How by Dan Sullivan and Dr. Benjamin Hardy Click here to read the transcript for this episode.

276: Strategy is Key for Longterm Success I am so excited about our podcast today. With me is Courtney Bramlett. She is the director of marketing and operations here at Scarlet Thread Consulting and she's also the owner of her own company, The Good Sower. Courtney and I are going to have an in-depth conversation about strategy, why we need to have it, roadblocks that we see when people don't have a strategy, and we will share a little bit about the programs that we have coming this year that are available to help you all with strategy. I hope if nothing else, by the end of our podcast today that you will have a deeper understanding of why strategy is important to the overall long-term success of your company. Enjoy the podcast.   Topics Mentioned: Strategy  Intentionality  Goal Setting Prioritization Key Thoughts:  The true strategy is much, much deeper and more granular. When it's understood and done well, then your day-to-day becomes easy.  Courtney Bramlett   A strategic plan is meant to be over multiple years in most cases. It certainly is going to be the most detailed in the year that you're working in.  Michele Williams    Business owners get in this rut of feeling like they're never hitting these objectives and goals that they have because they're trying to run in a thousand different paths at one time. So, I think strategic planning helps them with burnout, reducing burnout and decision fatigue too.  Courtney Bramlett   Two words that I see a lot of people run from and I think again, it goes back to education. They run from the word strategy, and they run from the word budget. They run from those because they think they lock them down. What I would say is they actually free you up. Because what a strategy is and what a budget is are decisions that you're making in advance.  Michele Williams    Contact Michele: Email: Team@ScarletThreadConsulting.com Facebook: Scarlet Thread Consulting Instagram: @ScarletThreadATL Website: ScarletThreadConsulting.com LinkedIn: Michele Williams References and Resources: Work with Me Metrique Solutions The Designers' Inner Circle - Become a Member Today    Pricing Without Emotion course Financial Health Check Up 12 Week Year by Brian P Moran The Gap and the Gain by Benjamin Hardy and Dan Sullivan Traction by Gino Wickman Fix This Next by Mike Michalowicz My New 8-week Group Coaching Program Kicks Off in January! Coming from humble beginnings in Rural Franklin County, Ohio, his passion for fabrics began when at 8 his Grandmother showed him how to sew, and cook. Her beliefs were that every man should know how to fix a hole in his jeans and cook for himself. Kevin took both of those tasks to heart by going to culinary school out of high school. His dossier includes working in a Michelin 3 star restaurant, managing a fabric store and working in a commercial drapery workroom. He credits his talents to a myriad of mentors including an elderly Japanese woman who taught him the art of Japanese tailoring and fabric draping and the much loved Cheryl Strickland for whom his questions would have never been answered without the direction of her amazing forum and workroom conferences. Born and raised in Marietta Ohio. Enjoyed making and creating as a kid and did a lot of cross stitch with her mom. Sewed a pair of shorts as a class project in 4th grade and didn't pick up sewing again until after college. As a social worker, in Cincinnati, creating became a great outlet so she took an upholstery class and learned the basics. Life had plans and her first daughter was born, a month early and only 4lbs. So most creative ventures took a back seat. 2 more daughters came along and then her mother-in-law decided as a break from mom life a sewing basics class could be fun. Once a week for 6 weeks Elizabeth got out and realized how much she loved sewing! Over the years she has made costumes for plays, altered prom dresses, wedding dresses, and dance costumes! For a brief stint even had a storefront for her alterations business. Life again threw a curveball and her husband got a job in Asheville North Carolina and they needed to move. In Asheville, she found out about workroom tech through a grandmother at her daughter's school and during covid, she took several online classes and found enjoyment in creating soft furnishings. She has taken on jobs in the past year and is now looking to build and grow her business in the home decor space.   Links and Resources; Price Your Work with Confidence by Kitty Stein     The Sew Much More Podcast is sponsored by;   The Workroom Channel   Scarlet Thread Consulting   The WCAA   The Curtains and Soft Furnishings Resource Library   Merril Y Landis, LTD   Angel's Distributing, LLC   National Upholstery Association

She fabricates window treatments, pillows, cushions, and roman shades, as well as sells hard treatments. Peg has a bachelor's degree in education with a major in Home Ec. (Back in the day when they called it that.) Sewing was in her background. In 2008, while working part-time in a design store she was introduced to CHF academy. It was near Charlotte NC and her next-door neighbors had just moved to Charlotte. Peg took the opportunity to go and take 3 classes while staying in the evening with her former neighbors. She was hooked from day one and her only regret is that she didn't know about this industry sooner. Peg has met the most amazing, dynamic, generous women at the CWC conferences and classes. Before that, she was a “stay-at-home” mom of 2, while helping with her husband's business as a sales rep in the ski and outdoor industry. His office was at home and he traveled to the states of MI, IN, and Ohio. Peg was able to manage the office while kids were in school and then take them to sporting practices and events when school was out. Peg and her husband live in Traverse City, MI and have 2 grown children and 6 grandchildren, 4 of which live one house away from us. Peg knows that is most grandparents' dream come true and does not take that for granted. In her free time, she likes to mountain bike, road bike, ski, and hike. Peg feels it's super important to have an outlet to stay physically active so we can keep doing the things we love to do.   Links and Resources; CWC    The Sew Much More Podcast is sponsored by;   The Workroom Channel   Scarlet Thread Consulting   The WCAA   The Curtains and Soft Furnishings Resource Library   Merril Y Landis, LTD   Angel's Distributing, LLC   National Upholstery Association

And she is the Director of Operations and Success for Scarlet Thread Consulting. You might remember that Kelcee and I did Episode 168, together on how to hire an operations person for your design firm. And in that episode, if you haven't listened you may want to go check it out. We discussed operations, building trust, working within your zone of genius and process, we really focused on what an operations person did and why you might need one. Today, we're going to go a little bit deeper. And we're going to really focus on the details of being ready, creating the first steps to move in the direction of hiring an operations person, we're going to talk 30-60-90 day plans. And we're also going to talk about creating a hybrid, so that sometimes the person may be in the office, and sometimes they may be working remotely. And so I hope that you gather a lot from this and are able to put it into practice. Topics Mentioned: Client Experience  Team Management SOPs Communication Key Thoughts:   Having either an additional resource that can work remotely that can do those tasks, or allowing your boots on the ground in office person time to be able to focus on those tasks could really benefit the company to have some very dedicated and focused time to accomplish the task before them. Michele (7:57)    That's where your clients see the biggest benefit from our operations support that we provide them in the program is because they do have to stop and focus on the bigger picture. Kelcee Sparks (8:44)    The five areas that we focus on are the client experience, team management, project management, vision, and clarity. From that, you develop a plan for our clients that says, here's where we need to start. With an extensive skill set Debbie has, over the years, moved Creative Hands from the attic of her home to a commercial building.  In 2009 she purchased a larger commercial building, which allowed for the expansion of the workroom and the transition from a Hunter Douglas Showcase Dealership to a Hunter Douglas Gallery.  Additionally, Debbie is a Certified Hunter Douglas consultant, a Hunter Douglas Certified Master Installer and the current President of the Western NY Chapter of WCAA. She loves transforming beautiful fabric into custom creations not found in the mass retail market. Theresa works with retail clients, a handful of decorators, and her daughter Lee, owner/designer at Contented Interiors, and her other daughter Nivette who is her project manager. Her husband is her admin, on-site measurer, foam cutter, bookkeeper and tax man. Theresa grew up with an artistic mother who kept her supplied with a plethora of arts and crafts kits. She learned to sew at summer camp and through middle school home ec classes and have had a love affair with sewing and fabric ever since. Her high school guidance counselor didn't have an answer for how to combine art and math into a career, and she didn't know she could make a living sewing so she pursued a BFA in Communication Arts & Design. Thersa's best art projects are their five children who are now contributing members of society;)     Theresa is very curious and always asks a lot of questions. She also loves people and sharing information so she considers herself a connector. She's had the privilege of being an employment coach for nearly ten years helping over 100 people get jobs. These personality traits led her to create and maintain All the Trimmings Shop where she tries her best to turn clients' dreams into reality.   Links and Resources; As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases and I am grateful if you choose to use my links. She went to the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC after finishing high school. She was petrified to be going to school in the big city, but she got used to it and loved the whole atmosphere of being in the fashion world. Susan landed a job as an assistant designer in a children's wear firm in the garment center. She had no idea what her future held for her. Susan went on vacation to Bermuda and that is where she met my future husband. She got married and moved to Bermuda. When she got there thought "what am I supposed to do now – there weren't any jobs to be had in fashion design." Susan made all of her own clothes which included making the patterns. Years later she found myself working in an insurance company as a Facilities Administrator and I really missed being creative. A few years ago Susan found Workroom Tech online and thought it would be fun to take a few classes – something different. It took her a while before she actually decided to follow through with making pillows, cushions, and window treatments. Susan's knowledge of patternmaking has come in handy with drafting some of the window treatments. For now, she is working two jobs and will eventually have to make a decision on which one she wants to continue with. You can find Susan on Instagram.     Links and Resources; Workroom Tech Sailrite

Michele Williams is the Founder of Scarlet Thread Consulting, a business coaching practice for interior design professionals. Michele helps 6-7 figure interior design firms create strategic plans that are actionable, effectively manage their business and finances, and develop a laser-focused framework for decision making. As a result, her clients reduce their workload, increase their bottom line, and reclaim their joy and time. Michele hosts the Profit is a Choice podcast, which focuses on making all parts of your business profitable — not just the money. She's also a certified coach in the Profit First and Fix This Next methodologies. Michele earned a Bachelor of Science in Management Information Systems and Administrative Management from the University of South Carolina-Columbia. In this episode… Many creatives doubt that their products or services are worth charging for. If it's easy to do, it probably isn't very valuable, right? Wrong. Just because something comes naturally to you doesn't mean it comes naturally to everybody. The years of effort you've put into making something seem simple is incredibly valuable — add in the time saved and stress relieved for clients, and that value shoots through the roof. In this episode of the Measure Success Podcast, Carl J. Cox talks with Michele Williams, Founder of Scarlet Thread Consulting, about recognizing the intrinsic worth of your creative business. Michele discusses the debilitating mentalities that many creatives have, why paying yourself is a priority, and how to set measurable goals.
