Today With Amy Baradell and Amy Meinecke: Welcome to Window Treatments for Profit! Listen in today as I speak with two great ladies who have created a wonderful partnership over the years, Amy Baradell and Amy Meinecke. They met in 2003 through the High Point Chapter of the WCAA. At that time, they each had their own window treatment business. In July 2009 they merged their businesses to form Window Works Studio, Inc. In today's episode they will share with us how their journey started, what are some of the most valuable things they have learned about a partnership, and of course how they overcome difficult situations as a team. More About Amy Baradell and Amy Meinecke: Amy Baradell and Amy Meinecke met in 2003 through the High Point Chapter of the WCAA. At that time, they each had their own window treatment business. In July 2009 they merged their businesses to form Window Works Studio, Inc. Amy Meinecke's first career was a Registered Nurse. She worked in Critical Care for 10 years and then in a local Cardiology office for 6 years. Her mother-in-law taught her how to sew when she was pregnant with her first child. After that, she took classes, learning through practice. Growing up, she wanted to be a Nurse or an Interior Designer. In 2000, after many years of Nursing, she decided to fulfill her other dream and started her own business creating custom window treatments. Her home based business quickly grew. She was the founder of the High Point Chapter of the WCAA. She worked from her home until 2009 when she merged her business with Amy Baradell, creating Window Works Studio, Inc. Amy M. loves working with clients and enjoys getting to know them through the design process. She has worked with a wide variety of clients and a wide range of budgets. She has experience designing and making custom window treatments, bedding, pillows, cushions, and slipcovers. She has been married for 34 years and still enjoys spending time with her husband! They enjoy time with their grown children, extended family and friends. About once a month they get together with a group of long time friends to play Bunco. Saturday night is still “Date Night” for her and her husband. She loves to be outside, has been an avid runner and has recently taken up biking. She has quite a green thumb with both flowers and vegetables. A huge supporter of Habitat for Humanity, she has organized two women only builds over the past few years. This fall she is organizing Habitat's main fundraising event that will take place on September 22, 2022. Amy Baradell began sewing at a young age. Her first “project”, at the age of five was a pillow for her grandfather who had suffered a stroke. In 1983 she obtained a bachelor's degree in clothing and textiles from UNC-Greensboro. In 1987 she began her own business, fabricating custom window treatments for designers in Charleston, SC. Having just had her first baby, she often brought him along for her measuring appointments. Her business was home based until 2003 when she purchased the space where Window Works Studio is currently located. Through the years Amy B has worked with homeowners, interior designers, and furniture showrooms. She has designed dance costumes, historical costumes, weddings gowns, custom window treatments, bedding, and slipcovers. She enjoys spending time with her husband. They married in 2018 after being introduced by Amy Meinecke. They share a love for running and music. They have four grown children between them and two grandchildren whom they enjoy traveling to see. Amy can be found hiking, running, cooking, and trying new local restaurants. She is serving this year as president of WPF, Women's Professional Forum. It is an organization formed in the 70's to encourage, support, and educate professional women. She and her husband are members of Hope Chapel in Greensboro and enjoy serving the community with them. Window Works Studio, Inc. has grown in many ways over the past 13 years. When Amy and Amy began, they were both fabricating, consulting, and designing. Fairly quickly they realized that they would be more efficient if they divided the duties. Amy Meinecke's focus is sales to retail clients, designing, marketing, and keeping up with the numbers. She also trains design consultants. Amy Baradell's focus is providing service to interior designers, managing the workroom team, designing, and fabrication. She also provides training for our fabricators. In 2015 they were able to purchase the unit next to their original space, bringing the square footage from 1600 to almost 3000 square feet. In the summer of 2020, during COVID, they upfitted the space, creating a larger workroom, a fabric sample room and a showroom. They have six seamstresses, an office assistant and have just hired a second design consultant. Through the years they have invested in business coaching, attending conferences, and most recently took Vita's class at LuAnn University. Their goal is to continue to grow, document their systems, and have a saleable business in the near future. More About Elliot Laniado: Elliot started his window treatment career as a man with a van with samples and today has a storefront in downtown Red Bank, NJ, a fleet of three vehicles, employing 12 people. His first approach was asking people to give him a chance, and he wouldn't accept no for an answer. He always found a way. Today, he is living his dream to “Work with good people, work with nice people, and run an honest business.” A turning point in his business happened in 1997 when Elliot became a Window Treatment Consultant through WCAA. This move helped him step into the world of drapery. Since then, Elliot became the ASID Finance Director for two years, gave classes to ASID designers on “How to avoid drapery nightmares” and, even today, continues to teach the Brookdale design program “The History of Window Treatments.” Elliot is a member of Exciting Windows! Since 2006. Elliot has fulfilled his lifelong dream of being a first responder through his volunteer EMT work. He lives in New Jersey with his wife, Nadine. They have three married children and ten grandchildren. Today With Joe Gebara: My guest today, Joe Gebara, owner of J. Edison Interiors Inc., was diagnosed with stage four Lynch Syndrome and given one year to live. Joe and I are on the board of the WCAA and as a member of the board, his cancer journey was pretty public. After turning to the book, The Greatest Salesman in the World by Og Mandino Joe was inspired to travel the country and educate people on Og's philosophies of prioritizing the important things in life. Tune in to learn the inspiring story of how Joe learned to find balance in his life and how he transferred that into his business. Pick It Apart [5:50] How Joe was always a proponent of balance and how being diagnosed with cancer escalated that. [12:57] Joe shares the three F's his father said everyone should be good at. [16:17] Joe talks about his philosophy on business. [32:30] What Joe recites every morning from The Greatest Salesman in the World. LuAnn Nigara and Joe Gebara's Ah-Ha Moments “We all have busy schedules and stress, but prioritizing and finding balance is key. You can stand on one leg as much as you want, but you will never not fall.” - Joe Gebara “Cancer gave me a perspective on life that I hope to share and inspire others with.” - Joe Gebara “We all need to take a good hard look at the way we are designing our lives because nothing is promised.” - LuAnn Nigara More About Joe Gebara: Joseph Gebara is the youngest of eleven children. Of Lebanese descent, Joseph was born in Haiti while his family worked there and migrated to Miami, FL when he was 2 years old. Raised in Miami, Joseph would routinely find himself at the family flooring and fabric store. He grew up in the window treatment industry and learned how to manufacture and install blinds, shades and draperies. Joseph studied education and for a brief period taught students with disabilities in Miami-Dade County. The freedom and income opportunities in the window coverings industries drew him from the classroom and he was back measuring, installing and assisting his clients with project management. He was one of the first certified Hunter Douglas installers in Florida. He continues to grow his business, J. Edison Interiors, Inc. along with his son, Noah. When not assisting his clients with their window covering needs Joseph can be found volunteering with his local school district advocating for low income and disabled students. He has served on numerous boards and has traveled the country speaking about the importance of finding balance between work and family. In 2016, Joseph was invited to speak at the White House. Joseph is also a polyglot, fluent in English, Spanish, French and Haitian Creole. He is currently learning Portuguese. Lisa Brock is the owner of Brock Custom Interiors in the Birmingham AL area. Born and raised in the south, married her college sweetheart and best friend. They raised 5 children on a pastor's salary learning to make a dollar stretch. We were often gifted hand-me-down furniture that I would turn into usable goods in our home with a bucket of paint and a nematic staple gun. Fast forward, kids are all grown and moved out with grandkids coming along at a rapid pace, she wanted to have some way to contribute to the “wants” of the family while doing something with her hands that gave her flexibility to be with her growing family. She began Brock Custom Interiors in 2020 after listening to just a few of the Sew Much More Podcasts that gave her the encouragement and realization that she knew enough to make a go at this industry and she's not regretted it once!! Kevin Kise owns a workroom and is a designer for Kise Interiors. Coming from humble beginnings in Rural Franklin County, Ohio, his passion for fabrics began when at 8 his Grandmother showed him how to sew, and cook. Her beliefs were that every man should know how to fix a hole in his jeans and cook for himself. Kevin took both of those tasks to heart by going to culinary school out of high school. His dossier includes working in a Michelin 3 star restaurant, managing a fabric store and working in a commercial drapery workroom. He credits his talents to a myriad of mentors including an elderly Japanese woman who taught him the art of Japanese tailoring and fabric draping and the much loved Cheryl Strickland for whom his questions would have never been answered without the direction of her amazing forum and workroom conferences. Kevin is married to his husband, Josh, they have a chocolate lab named Teagan and live in Columbus, OH. Cathy Cuddington is the owner of Dogwood Designs, a wholesale workroom located in Apex, North Carolina, a suburb of Raleigh. Her earliest sewing memory is making clothes for her Barbie dolls. She moved on to sewing her clothes through high school, even learning some tailoring techniques. Cathy spent her first career in the IT industry, during its infancy (i.e. card punch machines). During those 26 years, she would occasionally help out her friends with various window treatment requests, usually following a pattern in the pattern books. One personal project (a slipcover) took her onto the internet to find a how-to video. That one event opened her eyes to the possibilities of owning her own business in the custom soft furnishings marketplace. Dogwood Designs was born as a 50th birthday gift to herself. She has attended available trade schools and conferences, eventually gaining enough experience and confidence to offer her services exclusively to interior designers. She's an active member of the Triangle chapter of the WCAA. Cathy lives with her husband of nearly 40 years. She has two grown sons, and one grandson. She and Terry enjoy traveling (when they can) and taking rides in their little convertible when the weather is nice. Born and raised in Marietta Ohio. Enjoyed making and creating as a kid and did a lot of cross stitch with her mom. Sewed a pair of shorts as a class project in 4th grade and didn't pick up sewing again until after college. As a social worker, in Cincinnati, creating became a great outlet so she took an upholstery class and learned the basics. Life had plans and her first daughter was born, a month early and only 4lbs. So most creative ventures took a back seat. 2 more daughters came along and then her mother-in-law decided as a break from mom life a sewing basics class could be fun. Once a week for 6 weeks Elizabeth got out and realized how much she loved sewing! Over the years she has made costumes for plays, altered prom dresses, wedding dresses, and dance costumes! For a brief stint even had a storefront for her alterations business. Life again threw a curveball and her husband got a job in Asheville North Carolina and they needed to move. In Asheville, she found out about workroom tech through a grandmother at her daughter's school and during covid, she took several online classes and found enjoyment in creating soft furnishings. She has taken on jobs in the past year and is now looking to build and grow her business in the home decor space. After attending the Custom Workroom Conference in 2018, she decided it was finally time to turn her life-long passion and pursuit of sewing into a career. Angie values ongoing education and has attended classes at Workroom Tech in Tryon, North Carolina, studied upholstery at a technical college in Denver, and has taken many additional online and in-person training courses and seminars to hone her skills. Peg Wagner owns and operates Above and Beyond Window Design out of her home, working with mostly designers. She fabricates window treatments, pillows, cushions, and roman shades, as well as sells hard treatments. Peg has a bachelor's degree in education with a major in Home Ec. (Back in the day when they called it that.) Sewing was in her background. In 2008, while working part-time in a design store she was introduced to CHF academy. It was near Charlotte NC and her next-door neighbors had just moved to Charlotte. Peg took the opportunity to go and take 3 classes while staying in the evening with her former neighbors. She was hooked from day one and her only regret is that she didn't know about this industry sooner. Peg has met the most amazing, dynamic, generous women at the CWC conferences and classes. Before that, she was a “stay-at-home” mom of 2, while helping with her husband's business as a sales rep in the ski and outdoor industry. His office was at home and he traveled to the states of MI, IN, and Ohio. Peg was able to manage the office while kids were in school and then take them to sporting practices and events when school was out. Peg and her husband live in Traverse City, MI and have 2 grown children and 6 grandchildren, 4 of which live one house away from us. Peg knows that is most grandparents' dream come true and does not take that for granted. In her free time, she likes to mountain bike, road bike, ski, and hike. Peg feels it's super important to have an outlet to stay physically active so we can keep doing the things we love to do. Claire Herne is the owner of Louie Custom Drapery, located in Darien Connecticut. Claire's background is in investment banking, but she has sewn throughout her life, just for fun! Moving from the UK to the US in 2009 meant decorating a big new house and she struggled to find a local workroom so she pulled out her sewing machine and started making drapes and pillows and found that she really loved it. Soon, Claire, had friends asking her to start making soft furnishings for them and she decided that she should do this professionally. Louie Custom Drapery (named after Claire's mom and daughter) has been in business for just over 4 years - she serves the local trade community. Claire loves to interact with other workroom professionals and most of her learning has been through this wonderful group and at Workroom Tech. Claire lives with her 15-year-old daughter, 2 dogs, a cat, and 2 rabbits (aka Darien Petting Zoo!), her workroom has recently been located in her garage and things are really taking off now. Rachel and Bryan Short own and operate The Sewing Loft of Avon, a custom soft furnishings workroom located in Connecticut. It is a full-service workroom serving both interior designers and homeowners. Rachel has had a passion for sewing her entire life and made her first item in her sixth grade HomeEc class, a small football-shaped pillow. She turned her passion into a business when she started The Sewing Loft in their home in July 2010 after spending most of her professional life as a paralegal at a major law firm and at a wind energy company. Bryan came on board in 2013 after a career as a litigation attorney and both he and Rachel started working on growing The Sewing Loft full-time. Through the many ups and downs, joys and struggles, they always encouraged each other and remained focused on making their dream a reality. Today, The Sewing Loft is a thriving business with employees and has expanded to a commercial space. Most important, they are excited for what the future will bring! Trading Secrets - education, business & zesty Brazilian sauce
Welcome to the first episode of the Trading Secrets podcast. I'm your host Roger Magalhaes, and for today's episode I want to introduce myself, let you know what this podcast is about, and why I decided to create this show.Originally, I am from Brazil, but now I am based in Hopkinton, Massachusetts. I believe I was born an entrepreneur. When I was little, I would pull my shoe shine box around the neighborhood asking everyone I saw if they needed their shoes shined. I attended vocational school at 14, learned a profession, and would work and attend school at the same time. When I was 19, I went back to vocational school and learned robotics. My first job in the USA was washing cars, but I immediately knew it wasn't enough for me.After some training and searching, I was able to become a truck driver, which eventually led to becoming a vacation driver. That meant more money, but it also meant being on call 24/7. Four years later, I bought my house and renovated it by myself. Once the remodeling was finished, I realized I missed working with my hands. My cousin worked as a subcontractor installing window coverings, so I shadowed him for one day and knew it was for me.Now, after working hard and learning everything I could, I own my own business, I'm a columnist for Window Fashion Vision Magazine, I am the installation instructor for the fast-track program at WFCP, and a board member of the WCAA. In September of last year, I started my second company: Trading Up Consulting. I hope that through this podcast I can raise awareness of my trade, educate newcomers, and build a strong community.Listen to the full episode hereReview this episode here https://lovethepodcast.com/tradingsecretspodcastContact me here: podcast@tradingupconsulting.comFind out more about Trading Up Consulting here: https://www.tradingupconsulting.com/
