Bob Carrothers has 29 years of experience, he facilitates peer-to-peer boards of CEOs and executives, creating environments conducive to skill enhancement, informed decision-making and superior results. How you got from where you were to where you are today? · What would you say maybe if you could pick three overarching tenets or competencies that you believe CEOs need to practice or embrace in order to really achieve the three areas that just mentioned. · What are some of the key things that make an organization successful? · Now, Bob, can you also share with our audience, what's the one online resource, tool, website or application that you absolutely cannot live without in your business? · Now, can you also share with our listeners maybe one or two books that you have read, it could be a book that you read a very long time ago, or even one that you've read recently, but it had a great impact on you, whether it be personally or professionally. · Bob, can you share with our audience what's the one thing that's going on in your life right now that you are really excited about, either something you're working on to develop yourself or your people. · Where can listeners find you online? · Now, before we wrap our episodes up, Bob, we always like to ask our guests, do you have a quote or saying that during times of adversity or challenge, you'll tend to revert to this quote if for any reason you get derailed or you get off track, the quote kind of helps to get you back on track. Do you have one of those?   Highlights Bob's Journey Me: So, we always like to ask our guests, in your own words, could you share a little bit about your journey? How you got from where you were to where you are today?   Bob shared that it's been a very interesting journey. He started out as an entrepreneur; he had companies involved in the meat trading business. So, they bought and sold animal parts, lungs, livers, kidneys, everything that was most people would consider waste from an animal, and then they would resell them to people we knew wanted them, mostly to pet food companies, that's where the tonnage went. And then others to went to Mexico. Others went into sausage making, Chorizo making on the West Coast. They just find a buyer and go do it. And they'd go into a packing house and buy their entire production of lungs or livers or whatever, and then resell it into the pet food canning business. So, it's been an interesting ride.  In 1996 he got out of that business. He sold it to his management team, and they took it over, and they're still running it. And then after that, he started another company that failed miserably. He lost a ton of money. He was crushed, and it was hard and then he looked around, and he'd been a Vistage member, and he loved it. And he knew that with all the ups and downs he's had in his life, he could help people from making mistakes and doing what he did and living that life. So, he reached out to his past business chair, and he hired him, and that was in 1996, so he's been doing this ever since, September of 1996, so it's been quite a ride.   Overarching Tenets or Competencies CEO's Need to Embrace to Unlock Their Potential, Enhance Performance and Achieve Their Goals Me: Now, you focus on empowering CEOs to unlock their full potential, enhance their performance and achieve their goals. Based on your many years of experience, Bob in this space, working, I'm sure with CEOs and entrepreneurs across different industries, what would you say maybe if you could pick three overarching tenets or competencies that you believe CEOs need to practice or embrace in order to really achieve the three areas that I just mentioned.   Bob shared that he thinks they need to establish a great culture in their company and mind it. Nurture it and protect it, because culture trumps everything, nothing else matters. Your people won't be happy, you won't keep people, you will make your customers angry, your suppliers angry, and you'll do a really bad job because your employees won't care. And so, that's the first thing he would say, is build a strong culture.  The second thing is to hire correctly, be slow to hire and fast to make them available to industry. So, that's really important. If the employee can't do the job they were hired to do, they need to move on and then hire the right people. Put a lot of effort in your hiring process. And the other one would be, watch the money. You've got to keep track of your cash flow, you got to predict what the cash is going to be down the road. Bigger companies have CFOs to do that, and then they'll report to the CEO. Smaller ones, often the CEO will do it themselves. But you have to do it, because if you run out of cash, you're out of business. It's just really simple, if you can't make payroll, then you're gone.   Key Things for an Organization Success Me: So, Bob, in working with these different organizations, right? We're trying to establish what are some of the key things that make an organization successful? And so, the customer experience is critical in all businesses regardless of whether or not you have a face-to-face type of interaction or you're just digital and people are communicating with you solely through the internet. But leadership is very important for a business, whether you're a solopreneur or you're a fortune 500 company, regardless of the size, it's driven by the leader in the organization. As it relates to customer experience, if you were to maybe give us an example of a use case, a good use case, example that you've observed over the years in working with these CEOs, what do you think are some of the key things that make them be able to have a successful customer experience, one in which their customers are their brand advocates, their evangelists, their word of mouth advertisers. If that company decided not to advertise for the next two, three years, they would still be doing great business because their customers view them as fans. What would you say are key things in that?   Bob shared that there's one company that comes to mind, and that CEO was brilliant, and the culture in the company was extremely strong. He would walk around his plant every day, and he knew everybody's name and met family members, and he'd walk up to him and just say, “Hey, Charlie, how you doing? How's the family? How's your wife? I heard your son Robbie is sick.” He would do that, and the employees felt that they were cared for.  He never stopped setting goals, he never stopped doing things that would make the work fun. He was trying to reduce shrinkage one day, and it kept bugging him, it was going on for months, and he decided he'd just do a little contest, and he went out and bought an old junker car and a whole bunch of sledgehammers, and every day the group, the employees reduced the amount of shrinkage, they could go out and beat up on the car. And it was just amazing how much fun they were having and how just beating a car, they hit their goal for sure, and it cost the CEO, like, what $500 to do that.  He had other contests like dunk the CFO, where he had one of those dunking tubs. Certain goals were reached, that was out in the parking lot. He saw him with his customers. One of their Vistage speakers impacted him so much that he invited his customers from around the country to come to his plant, see the plant, and hear this speaker present, and because it made such an impact on him, he wanted his customers to be better too, so he thought this speaker could really help him.  What else did he do? Whenever he'd walk up to somebody and they promised to do something for him, he recorded it on his phone, so he'd pull it out and before he saw them, pull up their name and say, “Hey, how are you coming on that project we talked about?” And the accountability went through the roof. Just little things like that, simple things. But he had one goal, that if the company reached so much in revenue sales, he knew that if it did, they'd make extra money, if it was over and above the regular goal, it was big….hairy….audacious goal, and he said, “If you guys hit this, I will take the entire company to Las Vegas.” Because he knew if they increased the revenue that much, the profits would go up enough to pay for the trip and then some. And he was legendary with his employees. Just things like that that are special.   Me: I think one of the things I took away from what you said just now that it's not the big things, it's like always the little things, the minor details, and they go very far away with another human being, because it shows them that you value them, you appreciate them, and they're just not there to milk, to get more money, money, money. But you value them as a person, and you recognize the fact that your success is just as important as their success.   Bob agreed, that's exactly right. That's what it takes to build a great company, is the culture you create. You want people waiting in line to go to work for you.   Me: I know right, that's awesome.   App, Website or Tool that Bob Absolutely Can't Live Without in His Business When asked about an online resource that he cannot live without, Bob shared that he hates it, but he can't live without it, it's called email. Buries him, but it's the communication is so fast, and we can send documents back and forth, and he doesn't think anybody could live without email now. We all curse it, but it's there.    Me: Agreed, because in the absence of email, we have to go back to posting a letter to your customer or to your friend or family member, and we all know the Postal Service takes forever for you to get that response. So, yeah, email is amazing.   Bob shared that he remembers those days and they'd send off a contract and wait and wait and wait to get it back, just because of the mail, or an invoice. It just was crazy. And then came fax machines, and they were huge. He bought one once and his accountant, and said, “Why do you want that thing? Nobody else has them.” And he said they will, even though they will. And that became huge, and then email took over for that.   Books that Have Had the Biggest Impact on Bob When asked about books that have had a great impact, Bob shared that Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap…And Others Don't was a book that had an effect on him. Blue Ocean Strategy: How to Create Uncontested Market Space and Make Competition Irrelevant is another one. Dale Carnegie, How to Win Friends and Influence People.   Me: I'm actually looking at the book right now. It's sitting right in front of me.   Bob shared that that's one of the major ones. And another one he wrote was How to Stop Worrying and Start Living. So, there's several.    What Bob is Really Excited About Now! When asked about something that he's really excited about, Bob shared that he's always excited about cheering, he sees so much, and he loves what he does. As far as he's not in any training right now, but Vistage offers trainings all the time, and he also does stuff outside of Vistage. But right now, he's getting ready to go on a holiday in a sprinter van, it's an RV, and that's kind of got his attention. Plus, he's got two Vistage meetings next week.   Me: So, those are your things that you're working on that you're really excited about. Fantastic.   Where can listeners find Bob online? LinkedIn - Bob Carrothers Website – www.vistage.com   Quote or Saying that During Times of Adversity Bob Uses When asked about quotes that he tends to revert to, Bob shared he does, he's a big fan of Albert Einstein, and he had a quote that was, “The same level of thinking that caused a problem is not going to fix the problem.” That's not exact, but that's what it means. And that's so true. Another one is, “Everybody's a genius. But if you want to teach a fish to fly, they're going to fail and feel they're a loser from then on.” And some people just can't get it. And sometimes when things go wrong, you got to look at the people involved, or the thinking involved and reapproach it with a different level.   Me: Okay, so that second quote is more to say, maybe you need to take a few steps backward just to move forward, just to reevaluate and do it again.   Bob agreed. Reevaluate if it's an employee and they just can't get it. Maybe they're just not set up for it, and it's better to find another position for them, or another area of responsibility, or perhaps they're just not right for your company, like you got to have the right people on the bus as Jim Collins say.    Me: True. If you have the wrong people on the bus, it makes the journey that much harder.   Bob agreed, they got to be in the right seats.   Me: Well, thank you so much Bob for jumping on our podcast today and sharing all of these awesome insights as it relates to Vistage and your journey and just what are some of the key things that makes a leader successful and makes an organization successful as they navigate their customer experience through the journey of their customers lifetime. Gurinder is the founder and CEO of Otto Car, the company that provides cars and finance to most Uber drivers in London.Currently, over 5,000 vehicles on the road are provided through the services of Otto.In the few years since the business was founded and they were operating out of offices in shipping containers in a West London car park, they've hit £50 million in annual revenue and are growing faster than ever - and they've done it all without having to give up any equity or selling to VCs or PE.Coming from an immigrant family background, Gurinder was quick to identify cultural shifts impacting his dad's business, and he used the same strategy to get on board with new and emerging trends in his own business. When I first met today's guest over lunch in Colorado Springs, I knew ten minutes into my interview with him that I had found the leader that I was looking for with IJM (International Justice Mission), and he also ended up at the top of my list of people whom I wanted to interview on this podcast. Bob Lonac has a career in leadership that spans over several decades, having been a leader of Young Life for thirty-three years before becoming Executive Vice President of IJM and later C.E.O. of CRISTA Ministries. Bob walks us through his career and all of the different titles and responsibilities that he had with each position, starting with having joined Young Life in 1967 and working with them for thirty-three years before joining IJM and then CRISTA. He explains why he left Young Life and details his first team at IJM and what set it apart, and he also explains why he then left IJN and moved to CRISTA. Bob reflects on his childhood as well and what about his childhood led him to becoming a leader. He acknowledges God for giving him the gift of leadership but also credits his father, who was a hard worker and taught Bob the value of a strong work ethic. He also talks about one of his most satisfying childhood memories being the catcher on his baseball team even though he wasn't the best athlete, clarifying that he loved it because he loved being a leader. If 2020 showed us anything, it was that it is more important than ever to make money by using your experience and lived knowledge rather than your time or be dependent on a location. This week, Dr. Venus talks about the very first step in creating a new market, becoming the author of your own life, and taking ownership of what it really means to manifest your millions.   Key Takeaways: [4:54] When it comes to making money and wealth, you aren’t behind. Stop looking for help outside of you, the answers are within. You just first have to become accountable for your own life, and ultimately your own success.  [18:32] Before you create a new market, you need to become the author of your own life.  [19:59] Are you clear on the reality of what it takes to be a millionaire? Have you studied, researched, learned, asked questions, and really looked at what in your life is holding you back? [22:07] Even if we are experts in one area, there is always more to learn in another. That is brave. Dr. Venus may be a savage when it comes to writing and is a best-selling author, but she is now closing the gaps on learning to write for television. She may be a baby at it now, but she won’t stop until she masters it. She invested in great resources, takes the time to hone her craft, and knows that the difference between no show and an Emmy winning hit is putting in the work. Dave is a star in the ticketing and entertainment industry, and he's the guy that American Express referred to as The King of Tickets. Dave has a fascinating story to share! In today's show, he talks to us about creating revenue, how to deal with change, and reinventing yourself. He also tells some amazing stories that are sure to inspire you! Dave Wakeman's bio Dave Wakeman is “The Revenue Architect.” His consulting work has attracted clients such as American Express, Manhattan Construction Company, Volunteers of America, Yahoo!, the United States Department of State, the Seattle Seahawks, and over 100 other leading companies from around the globe.  Dave is widely known for his work in modernizing the secondary ticket market and partnering with American Express and Circles on their Black Card ticketing program that revolutionized the way that people buy tickets and view the secondary market.  With his consulting firm, the Wakeman Consulting Group, Dave has turned his focus to helping organizations around the globe maximize their profitable revenue.  Dave is a powerful advocate for the need for businesses to tell stronger brand stories and that explosive growth isn't a miracle. A great career opportunity Dave moved to Seattle, knowing no one there, and with about $600 in his pocket. He landed a job working for Paul Allen, who helped start Microsoft with Bill Gates.  A talent for marketing Dave helped Paul to open the Experience Music Project, which is on the grounds of the Seattle Center and is now called the Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP). That was where Dave discovered that he had a marketing talent. Dave Wakeman's move to New York    Dave Wakeman's marketing ability led him to many different places. He moved to New York and worked with a company called Americana Tickets. That was where he worked with American Express and the Centurion Card, helping them to figure out how to buy and distribute tickets for their clients all over the world. Dave worked on many different projects Together with the ad agency for Yellowtail Wines, Dave threw Tailgate parties in 36 cities. That was one of the key ingredients that helped Yellowtail to grow and get into Costco. He worked with Coca-Cola on the launch of their Odwalla product, the efforts to support the Affordable Care Act in America and to get President Obama re-elected in 2012. He also did a lot of work in Australia.  Generating money Dave Wakeman grew up in very modest circumstances. He realized very early on that the way to make something of himself would be through his ability to generate money and to market and sell effectively. Over the years, he developed an eye for the things in which people look for and find value. Dave Wakeman's thoughts on creating value Dave understands that if you can create enough value for the people you're aiming to serve, then you should also be able to collect some of that for yourself. Unique experiences in LA Dave helps people get registered to vote through #iVoted, which also invites people to attend virtual concerts with some great artists.  Helping non-profits Dave loves to give back, so he often uses his expertise to help non-profits. Creating revenue  If you want to create revenue or have the most impact, you consistently need to ask three questions: What is the value you're trying to create?     Who is the customer that will pay you?     How do you reach those people? You need to focus on the value that you're trying to create for people, you need to find the specific person who you can help, and you need to communicate effectively. Strategy and tactics Strategy is where you're trying to get to, and tactics are how you get there. Lack of precision Dave believes that when people lack precision when they speak, it leads to poor outcomes. The King of Tickets Dave Wakeman attributes becoming known as The King of Tickets to luck, his excellent relationship-building skills, and technology. You are not replaceable Dave points out that your ability to be you is not replaceable. So, you need to invest in having a point of view, relationships, and finding ways to create value for the people you serve because none of those are replaceable. Coping with change We need to embrace change. So, although we are going through a terrible time right now, you should not give up because people will come back.   Recognizing and embracing the power of change Change will come, no matter what. Many years ago, Dave learned that change is the only thing in life that is certain. And when change rears her beautiful face, you must embrace her because change is the only thing that you have.  Reinventing yourself, coming out of the pandemic Coming out of the pandemic, you don't have to be the same person you were going into it. The key to reinventing yourself lies in looking at what you want to do and who you want to become going forward. Leaders don’t have the time to dive into hiring the way they need to They are pulled in too many directions, and end up focusing on marketing themselves, sales, visibility, interviews, etc. When they do decide to hire they often go about it by posting on social media, and are then inundated with DM’s which just stresses them out   The Director of Operations Certification Program follows a blueprint similar to an HR Business Partner. What is behavioral economics and why does it matter to you? Melina Palmer, the host of The Brainy Business Podcast, has dedicated her career to seeking answers to these questions for herself and for her clients. Melina always thought she would be a singer, but decided to major in something more practical. After getting a degree in business, she discovered behavioral economics and is the founder of The Brainy Business.  Her business is all about branding, pricing, communication, and the psychology of how we make decisions. She uses her business and marketing background to help businesses with pricing, branding, and conveying their message in the best way possible. Melina started her podcast about a year ago, and it has been a huge factor in growing her business, reputation, and making connections. She shares some insights into her amazing podcast and teaches us a thing or two about business and behavioral economics.  Show Notes: [03:26] Melina has some amazing artwork for her podcast and website.  [03:46] Melina has a background in marketing and branding. She wanted artwork that would showcase fun.  [04:33] Melina's artwork includes a rocket and a brain.  [05:33] Melina has two brains in her office, but the third glitter brain is coming.  [05:57] The brainy business is about behavioral economics, which is rooted in psychology, but marketing is prevalent in every episode that Melina does. It's also about branding, pricing, and communication. It's about the psychology of how we make decisions.  [07:02] Framing is so important. Think of 90% fat free compared with 10% fat. Messaging matters. [08:20] Melina started her podcast because she wanted to help people understand what behavioral economics is and share it in a way that is useful to people. [10:02] Podcasting takes a lot of time, you need to know that you are ready and willing when you commit to it.  [11:09] Melina already had a lot of ideas, so starting the podcast was the right move for her. She also wanted to be the first behavioral economics podcast. [11:44] She was also shifting from doing really hands on work with clients to more strategic work.  [12:34] Melina's podcast has been out for about a year now. It has helped so much more than she expected.  [13:08] A big connection Melina made through the podcast was the Texas A&M Human Behavior Lab who is using the podcast to supplement their learning. Other people are using it to teach their students. [14:03] She is building research with Texas A&M and multiple corporations have reached out for possible projects.  [14:17] This year she is working on transitioning her time out of the business.  [14:57] Melina looks at her download numbers. Reach is important for her, because she wants to become an influencer in her space.  [15:46] Multiple open doors and speaking engagements have come from the podcast. It also adds credibility.  [16:41] She intentionally built her podcast to be ingrained in her business. [18:17] Melina can't use a script for public speaking, but she uses one for the podcast.  [19:36] She also started condensing her intros after they were getting longer and longer.  [20:13] She also looks at reviews.  [21:59] The most common thing people say to her in person is that it's weird to watch her mouth move while talking. It's not about the cookie and cotton candy grapes are also popular topics brought up.  [24:00] Melina makes hand written notes and checklists. She likes how PPS uses Basecamp to make uploading the audio easy. She does all of her art herself and uploads the podcasts to YouTube. She uses Canva for artwork and Headliner for audiograms. She also uses Active Campaign and Audacity.  [26:33] When Melina was young, there was no question that she would be anything other than a singer/actress. She still sings and is singing the national anthem for the Seattle Storm game tonight.  [27:44] In college, she thought she would major in something more practical like business and that is where she discovered psychology and behavioral economics. [29:12] Her favorite book is A More Beautiful Question by Warren Burger. [30:40] Melina is hopeful that one of her near future book recommendations is her own. She's also working on small focused courses on one topic.  [33:55] Darrell's takeaways: Lack of existing podcasts on Melina's topic encouraged her to start sooner rather than later. She considered her own optimism bias when it comes to content creation. She defines success by download numbers, revenue, and credibility. SD: Delighted to have you on. To start off with, can you give us some background on yourself, your company, Influencer and your role as CEO there. BJ: Of course, so I started the company back in 2015 but the brainwave for the company obviously came before then. When I was younger than I am now, I had a clothing company called Breeze and essentially I wanted to make it the next big thing. I always thought that if celebrities wore my clothes that would really help. However I couldn't afford any celebrities nor did I know any celebrities. So, I'm a massive Chelsea football fan - sorry if that offends anyone who's listening - but I reached out to quite a few Chelsea reserve teams players on social media. These guys had around 10 or 15 thousand followers on Twitter and I basically said, "If I give you fifty quid would you mind posting a tweet wearing my clothes?" So I started working with not just Chelsea reserve teams players but other reserve team players from up and down the country. I branched out to models, fitness bloggers and all these people who had, you know, a very small following on social media but had some influence. And while I was building up this network I thought, "OK, other brands can benefit from this network as well." So I decided that even though Breeze was really cool and I was loving it there'll be much more success in the future from launching an agency which connects brands with these influential content creators. I decided to put Breeze to one side and launch what Influencer is today and this was back in 2015.

In fact, many studies show that after college, the average person only reads 3 more books for the rest of their life! And don’t be tempted to think that the reading of books is old-fashioned and no longer relevant. There is power in the written word. Tip of the Week Since developing Parkinson’s in 2011, I have been receiving deep-tissue massage therapy as part of my treatment. When you have a need, do you pray or do you plead? Do you begin your prayers with words like, “Please God, please! God, I beg You to have mercy!” Prayers that plead and beg imply that your heavenly Father is not willing to help you. Yet, He is far more gracious and willing to give to you than you are willing to ask, think or imagine. (Ephesians 3:20) He desires above all things that you prosper and be in health, even as your soul prospers. (3 John 1:2) In fact, long before you have a need, God has already met that need. Long before you knew you needed a Savior, He sent His Son to be your Savior. This is your God! He is a good God. So when you beg Him for something, you are actually saying that He is reluctant to give and needs to be persuaded strongly before He will move. Yet, He is not like that. Jesus knew the heart of the Father. When He saw the woman bound with a spirit of infirmity, He did not pray, “Oh Father! She has been suffering for 18 long years! I beseech You, Father, have mercy on her. Please, please heal her!” No, when Jesus saw her, He immediately proclaimed, “Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity!” He spoke this way because He knew the heart of the Father. He knew that the Father wanted her delivered from her crippling condition. At the end of a church service, I don’t stand and pray, “Oh God, please bless Your people. Oh God, do keep them. Oh God, be ever so gracious to them!” Instead, I proclaim, “The Lord bless you. The Lord keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you!” Beloved, when you pray, proclaim your healing, protection and provision because your Father’s heart overflows with love for you. And when you declare it, He sanctions it. When you declare it, He establishes it! Makes you a better writer. When you read a book that’s well written, your own writing begins to take on the qualities that you admire in others. Reading what others think about a topic can either correct our misconceptions or confirm what we’ve held to be true. A best-selling classic that will either challenge or confirm your beliefs is Lee Strobel’s The Case for a Creator. Enriches your life. So far, we’ve been talking primarily about growing our intellect and our business. But reading for pleasure offers many benefits as well. Reading a book before bedtime is a great way to wind down and relax. Recreational reading opens a whole world of history, intrigue, humor, adventure, and fantasy. That commitment required a side hustle of some sort, which is when Nicholas turned to the internet marketing world. When he started using Facebook as a major advertising platform for his work, he quickly became one of the most recognized agencies/consulting businesses in the market. But that was just the beginning. You won’t want to miss the story of the million-dollar road that this side hustle has taken Nicholas down, on this episode of the Consulting Success Podcast.   Don’t Be Just Another Generic Consultant — It’s Time to Specialize One of the greatest keys to consulting success that I constantly emphasize is the absolute importance of specializing. It isn’t enough to simply tell people that are you are a consultant for any industry — you have to find your niche and make it work for you. Nicholas learned early in his career that “everyone and their mother” was a generic digital marketing consultant. It just wasn’t enough for him to follow that same overly worn path — and it won’t be enough for you, either. You have to pinpoint what exactly you are going to specialize in and confidently move forward from there.   This can seem like a daunting task, and you may assume that everyone has the same skills as you. But you can’t let those thoughts overwhelm you. With a bit of research and perhaps some luck, you may discover that you already have in your possession a specialized skill that is just waiting to be exposed. Discovering this skill set and exploiting it in your favor is what will set you apart as an expert in your industry.   For Nicholas that opportunity came at a convention in 2014, where he discovered that he already had a skill that could lend itself well in the marketplace. He knew exactly how to make a profit from Facebook ads, while everyone around him was struggling to figure out what he already knew. By recognizing this, Nicholas carved out a niche for himself, which set him apart from his competition and dramatically increased the demand for his skills. By focusing solely on his niche, Nicholas elevated through the ranks and brought his company to where it is today. As you listen to the story he shares of how he found success, you’ll see how the same approach to specializing can work for you too.   Discover Your Niche by Doing Two Simple Things At times it may seem that you are one of dozens of consultants offering the same skills to an oversaturated market. Nicholas has two tips to help pinpoint your area of specialization.   First, recognize an underserved segment of your marketplace. If you are a consultant that is often “scratching an itch,” meaning that you’ve already figured out what needs are present, chances are you are also already looking for a solution. Once you know who you need to target, the next step will come easily.   Second, target an affluent segment of your target market. You will find greater success if you can identify the thriving companies that are in need of your specialty. By seeking out these companies you will create for yourself a greater opportunity for success within the underserved segment of your marketplace.   Your Network Will Always Work for You The greatest way to find this kind of success is to keep your finger on the pulse of your industry. By tapping into your already existing network, you’ll be able to easily recognize an underserved market. Within your network, there are needs that are waiting to be filled, and you can discover what these needs are in a variety of ways. Compile a list of the best and worst consultants your clients have ever worked with. Poll people within your network to gather opinions on their experiences, good or bad, to figure out what needs they still have that are waiting to be met. Look for commonalities between favorite clients, whether it be the particular business, size of a client’s business, or the products they offer. Look at clients that have been the worst to work with and take note of what common characteristics they have. Each of these steps will help you to zero in on your new niche.   Even after you have taken these steps, you may still find that your market is saturated with overgeneralized specialists. But there is still a way that you can position yourself so that it sets you apart from your competitors. Just as Nicholas shifted his expertise from general marketing consultant to Facebook strategist, you can find a way to stand out in your crowd. However, as your business continues to grow, if you keep working toward dollar signs only, you are going to find yourself working for your business, instead of making your business to work for your lifestyle. Chances are that isn’t why you decided to become a consultant in the first place. At some point, whether it be by reaching a salary goal, obtaining expensive possessions, or even the birth of a child, your measure of true success will shift. Then you will have to protect your success by the choices that you make.   Nicholas shares the measures he has taken to protect his success and optimize his business so that it best aligned with his personal values — and he calls this process “netting up.” For Nicholas, this means a few things. First, it means clearly identifying and only working with clients that he truly enjoys working with. Earning a big paycheck isn’t the only criteria for working with a client anymore — now you can ask yourself if you actually want to spend time with each client that comes along.   Second, increasing your prices is a well-earned mark of success. As you achieve higher levels of success, you will have the luxury of tailoring your prices to ensure that you’re working only with the quality of clients you want to work with. You may reduce your number of clients but as a reward, you are also increasing the quality of each business transaction.   Third, netting up means keeping your staff at a manageable size. This may mean letting people go, but it also means identifying key responsibilities and roles in your business. Rather than supporting full-time employees, you can utilize contractors to fill those gaps and reduce the number of staff that you are responsible for managing.   Fourth, protect your success by putting standard operating procedures in place and making them work for you. If there are ways that you can automate, optimize, or delegate the work that your business requires, take the time to make it happen.   Fifth, make intentional and clear decisions about your boundaries. When are you willing to do extra work? Or answer the phone on a Friday afternoon at 4:30? Or come in over the weekend? By setting boundaries, you can lift the burden of your work and protect your success.   Enjoying this kind of success may sound too good to be true, but if you implement the ideas that Nicholas has shared here, you will soon be enjoying this same level of consulting success as he is.   What are the Pricing Models that Work? Every consultant struggles to correctly price work. For Nicholas, pricing models have evolved over time for both agency pricing and consulting pricing. Discovering this skill set and exploiting it in your favor is what will set you apart as an expert in your industry.   For Nicholas that opportunity came at a convention in 2014, where he discovered that he already had a skill that could lend itself well in the marketplace. Poll people within your network to gather opinions on their experiences, good or bad, to figure out what needs they still have that are waiting to be met. Look for commonalities between favorite clients, whether it be the particular business, size of a client’s business, or the products they offer. Look at clients that have been the worst to work with and take note of what common characteristics they have.
