Stories of a Broken Sun

The sun is broken. The heart of Gov, the four-in-one saviour, staggers through the sky, drenching the starving lands in burning light, or plunging them into frozen night. The deserts drown fertile lands in sand and dust. All of this is our punishment for failing the covenant with the four-in-one, who saved us from the Emergency nearly 300 years ago. When the sun stalls for minutes, hours, or days, some say that it is dying, and Gov with it. Rumours on the wind, swiftly stilled by the brutal efficiency of the Church. Twice before, fiery blessings fell from the sun, destroying the lands and peoples below. Nothing grows where these splinters of a broken sun touch the earth-- nothing but knowledge of the lore lost in the Emergency, for those who can claim these relics. It has been 30 years since the last splinter fell within the Church's domain. The sun grows less stable, and the earth sweats and shivers, but life continues to find a way. It is the year Emergency Plus 260. Four youths, freshly out of general school and starting their apprenticeships, live together with their parent groups in a traditional quad. Their lives are like any others: hard, but routine. There are no surprises in the Church's domain. Three days a week, they work the fields or the fungus caverns; three days a week, they learn their new trade; and one day a week, they go to the Shrine in the center of town to receive Gov's blessing. Today is just another day, this meal is just another meal, and the sun outside of town is in just another stall. For the third time in history, a splinter fell from the broken sun. Four apprentices living in a quad in Town 3-7 witnessed the fall, and decided to try and claim the splinter for themselves, hoping to turn the chaos to their advantage-- financial or otherwise.  In the confusion of the lockdown, they escaped their quad and made their way to the walls, where they were able to climb out of town and onto the baked steppe outside. Four years have passed since the Third Splinter fell and our heroes touched it. Shrine Day didn't go as planned.  Against all odds, Héctor Qeema-- Emren's adoptive father-- was chosen to receive the Blessing of Piety. Unfortunately, it was a trap: rather than delivering a blessing, the shrine delivered death. Six Auditors came from the sky, initiating a purge of Town 3-7 as punishment for their harbouring members of the Excom. Thinking quickly, the five apprentices just barely escaped with their lives, and ran through the city to head for Izabel's lab, and the hidden library within.  And it had been such a lovely day... She walks towards you. She's holding the strangest-looking spear-- it's a monk's spade: one side of it is a crescent moon, and the other side is a shovel. She's wearing these green robes: they're green and gold, and they're bright. Her hair, jet black, is wrapped around her head beneath a bright green scarf. Essentially, she's solid muscle. Every aspect of her exudes power and majesty. There's a tangible desire to kneel at her approach. The hair coming from her chin is braided and twisted up with green, gold, and purple bows arranged in five spikes, like the bottom half of the sun. She has a look on her face: imperious but not cruel, as if she expects obedience but offers compassion in return. Piercing bronze eyes come to rest on each of the four of you for just a moment each, and it feels as if her gaze is a mountain. She allows the silence to stretch until it is only just bearable, then says: "I am Mandukhai al-Armouti whose Joy is the Fire, High Priestess of the Dunes and Champion of Veliko. The Misfit School for Interdimensional Travel is not supposed to conduct research without oversight from Concord Lagoon. Everyone agreed to this restriction after their thoughtless pursuit of power led to the Pop and traded parts of the Pox'd Cauldron for parts of other dimensions, displacing hundreds of citizens to unknown fates. Unfortunately, the thirst for knowledge is not so easily ignored, and Tirzo Pallakeen and his team of underground engineers traded favours and technology to the morally flexible Free Realms Commission in order to construct a train that can traverse dimensions. As tends to happen with technology created without considering ethics, that train has run away and is gradually destroying the fabric of reality.
