This is the second part of our interview with Dr. David Curtin, Canada Research Chair in Theoretical Particle Physics at the University of Toronto.  In response to the kind of dark matter model found in Jim Al-Khalili's science fiction book 'Sunfall', David expounds upon the "significantly weirder' models of dark matter being contemplated today.  Since the failure to find any dark matter candidates at the Large Hadron Collider, and the continued exclusion of WIMPs by the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search, there has been room to develop more complex ideas about atomic dark matter forming from simpler dark particles, and the possibility of a dark electromagnetic force with dark photons to bind dark atoms together.  David explains the consequences of not being able to cool down on galactic scales, which gives rise to the spherical halo of dark matter around galaxies - what macro-scale structure tells us about micro-scale structure.  He tells us about asymmetric dark anti-matter which may balance the existence of asymmetric regular matter, and could finally explain how something came from nothing in the formation of the universe we see today. Theoretical physicist and science communicator Professor Jim Al-Khalili has taken a break from writing popular science books to write his first novel. Sunfall (£16.99, Bantam Press) is a science fiction thriller set in the year 2041, when the Earth’s magnetic field has started to die, leaving life on Earth vulnerable to threats from space.Scientists and engineers are thrown into a race against time to protect the Earth. Cherryh, from the 1981 short story collection, "Sunfall".C.J. Cherryh is a best-selling author who has sold over 3 million books, and has an asteroid named after her (!). "Sunfall" was the first of her works that Ruiz has ever read, and he loved it, heartily recommends it, and plans to read more. Marguerite however, has read LOTS of C.J. Cherryh, with the notable exception of "Sunfall", which is now on her list.

This week’s episode of the Event Industry News podcast looked at the Sunfall Festival, an event set to take place in London this summer for the second time. The festival is a unique event that combines an outdoor daytime element that is then followed by official after parties in nearby indoor venues. Andy Peyton and Noah Ball from the festival’s senior management team joined the podcast to look at the various elements of the event and how it’s put together. During the podcast, they talk about the challenges of working in an urban park, and how they could split some of the major infrastructure elements with another event that takes place on the same site. They also talk about the task of ticketing the event with so many daytime/night-time options available and the meticulous level of detail that they paid to the quality of the audio production. In the next episode of the podcast, host James Dickson will speak with the creator of ANDRODES, an hour-long live show that consists of a projected 3D animated film synced to an electronic dance music soundtrack, performed live by emerging artist SARTORY.  

In the second of our live streamed Tuesday night podcasts, host James Dickson looked at the topic of ROI and whether traditional methods of data capture are killing exhibitors’ chances to analyse it successfully. Joining the podcast was Captuvate co-founder Brian Anderson, a company that through its unique way of capturing exhibition leads has identified flaws in the way ROI can be measured. During the episode, Brian looks at the many different factors that affect how a company can measure ROI from an event, and how the process of lead capture and follow up is contributing negatively to the way it’s calculated. Studio 89 know how to party. Since 2011 they have been proving this whilst moving from basement to basement bringing with them an eclectic array of disco, funk, boogie, house, soul and everything in between. Originating in Cardiff they have captured what can be hard to find, the spirit and soul of days gone by. This is evident in the inspiration which they take from the disco era of Paradise Garage and Studio 54. Many have tried and failed to replicate the warmth and sincerity of a scene which vanished years ago, but in all honesty, Studio 89 are as close now to that you might ever find. We caught up with them ahead of Sunfall weekend where they will host Derrick Carter, Honey Dijon and Michael Serafini at Brixton Electric.
