Hanukah- The Proper Time for Menorah Lighting; Eating & Learning Before Lighting

Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 22, 2024

The Shulhan Aruch, in Orah Haim (672), writes that the proper time for lighting the Hanukah candles is the "end of sunset," or Set Ha'kochavim – nightfall (listen to audio recording for precise citation). Practically speaking, this means that one should light the Hanukah candles fifteen minutes after sundown. One should make an effort to light the candles no earlier or later than this time. If one cannot light the Hanukah candles at the preferred time, he may light them later during the night. The Magen Abraham (Rabbi Abraham Gombiner, Poland, 1637-1683) was of the opinion that a person who returns home late at night lights the Hanukah candles without the Berachot, unless there is somebody else awake in the home who sees the lighting. Otherwise, according to the Magen Abraham, the Berachot are not recited, since there is no Pirsum Ha'nes (publicizing of a miracle) in such a situation. Other authorities, however, including Rav Yaakob Haim Sofer (Baghdad-Israel, 1870-1939) and Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach (Israel, 1910-1995), in Shalmeh Mo'ed (p. 218), disagreed. In their view, one may recite the Berachot over the candle lighting even if nobody else witnesses the lighting. This is the view accepted by Hacham Ovadia Yosef. Preferably, however, one should wake up one or two members of his household so they can witness the lighting. Many people are unable to light the Hanukah candles at the preferred time because of professional obligations, and therefore end up lighting later, when they return home from work. However, people who must light the candles later for work-related reasons must ensure to light at the proper time on Sundays, or other days when they are not at work. Even if somebody must light later at night on workdays, he must make a point of lighting at the proper time whenever this is possible. It should be noted that the practice in most Yeshivot and Kollelim is that the students leave when the time for candle lighting arrives so they can return home and light at the proper time, and they then return to the Yeshiva or Kollel to resume their studies. One is obligated to place enough oil in the lamp to sustain the flame for at least a half-hour. There is a custom that was famously observed by the Brisker Rav (Rav Yishak Zev Soloveitchik of Brisk, 1889-1960) to add a larger amount of oil to the Hanukah lamps, so that they continue burning late into the night. The Brisker Rav felt that since nowadays there are people walking about outside even until the late hours, it is proper to have the Hanukah candles burn until the late hours of the night to publicize the miracle. However, even he conceded that this is not required according to the strict Halacha, which requires simply providing enough oil for the candles to burn for a half-hour. It is forbidden to begin eating a "Se'udat Keva" ("established meal") before one lights the Hanukah candles. The prohibition begins a half-hour before the preferred time for lighting (assuming one plans on lighting at the preferred time). Thus, for example, if sundown occurs at 4:30 PM, such that the preferred time for lighting is 4:45, it would be forbidden to begin eating a meal from 4:15. A "Se'udat Keva" for the purposes of this Halacha refers to a quantity of a Kabesa (approx. 2 oz.) or more of bread. It is thus permissible to eat a small snack or have a drink before lighting the Hanukah candles, but it would be forbidden to eat a slice of pizza, for example. Halacha also forbids studying Torah before lighting the Hanukah candles. This prohibition, however, begins only once the time for candle lighting arrives; one may learn Torah within a half-hour before the time for candle lighting. Summary: One should endeavor to light the Hanukah candles fifteen minutes after sundown; if this is not possible, one may light later during the night. One must supply enough oil to sustain the flame for a half-hour, though some have the custom to add larger amounts of oil. One should not begin eating a meal within a half-hour before the time for lighting Hanukah candles until he lights, and one should not learn Torah once the time for candle lighting arrives, until he lights.

During the MC Fireside Chats last June 21 presented by Accessparks, it was mentioned that the podcast has undergone a change with the departure of co-host Cara, who has been appointed the president of the Canadian Camping & RV Council. The episode revolves around insightful discussions on the camping and RV industry featuring recurring guests Sean Vidrine from Four Points RV Resorts, Scott Knepp from Ivee Group and Whitney Scott from KOA together with special guests Sean Hamilton from Boyd's Campground, and Keva Niver from Boheme Retreats.Sean shares about the challenges and accomplishments he has experienced operating Boyd's Campground, a 60-year-old establishment. Keva, on the other hand, introduces her developing campground, Boheme Retreats, that houses vintage campers with a vision to establish an inclusive camping environment. She plans to expand the venture across multiple locations while preserving its unique ethos combining a retro aesthetic with diversity and inclusivity. The conversation with Brian and the guests focuses on various aspects of the camping and RV business such as franchise flexibility, customer experience, branding, acquisition strategies, and customer retention. For instance, Brian appreciates KOA's franchise model that offers flexibility for innovation, while Sean from Four Points emphasizes the importance of delivering an engaging and memorable customer experience. Sean also speaks about their evolving acquisition strategy in response to changing economic conditions and market dynamics.Further, the discussion explores the importance of creating unforgettable experiences for guests, with Sean crediting their staff for treating guests like family, leading to customer retention. The conversation also touches on the unique aspects of camping in Key West, Florida, despite it not being the tropical paradise as often perceived. Shaun explains how they have maximized the waterfront experience with activities like paddle boarding and wildlife viewing, amidst other local cultural influences. An intriguing part of the dialogue revolves around a recent KOA report on the use of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly tools like Chat GPT, in planning camping trips. The group discusses the surprising statistic that 32% of campers, as compared to 7% of non-campers, are leveraging AI to research campgrounds and activities, seek reviews, and even construct their itineraries. The participants express concerns about AI potentially spreading outdated or inaccurate information but are optimistic about its effective utilization as the technology matures. In line with this, the group delves into the improvements in AI, especially with advancements like GPT-4, that result in more accurate search outcomes. They anticipate this influencing industries such as camping and hospitality and forecast it to reshape user engagement. This development, though requiring consumer adaptation, prompts businesses to be prepared for the shift. The podcast also discusses how AI can help novices in camping by serving as an information source, albeit they caution against relying on AI to compare specific campgrounds. They also recognize the potential of AI in enhancing the camping experience, particularly in speeding up the engagement with outdoor experiences. The conversation winds down with Whitney indicating that more people are blending different travel types with camping, thereby shifting the focus for campground owners to sell experiences rather than just camping spots. The economic benefits that campers contribute to local economies are also underlined. Finally, a key topic towards the end of the podcast revolves around the untapped potential of the...

Daily Bitachon
Kippur Succot Connection Galut Humility

Daily Bitachon

We have very a important reframe, as we get ready for the holiday of Succot, and sit out in our Succahs. The Pesikta D'Rav Kahana, one of the early Midrashim asks a famous question, What is the reason that we sit in the Succah after Yom Kippur? If sitting in the Succah is to remember Yetziat Mitzrayim, then why do it at this time of the year? Yetziat Mitzrayim occurred in Nissan, in the spring. So why are we sitting now? The famous answer is that we want do it in a way that will be recognizable, that we're doing it for the purpose of the Mitzvah - If we were sitting in the Succah when everyone else goes outside in the summertime, it wouldn't be recognizable. So therefore, we do it at this time of the year, when it's quite clear that it's for the purpose of the mitzva. But the Pesikta D'Rav Kahana gives another reason we want do it after Yom Kippur. Because it says that Galut is Mehaper . Sometimes a person has a sin, and the way for him to get Kapara is by going into exile. The earliest source of this is Kayin. He was sent into exile. The Rambam says Galut causes one to become humble, and humility is a cause of forgiving one's sins. So here we are. And for all we know, it was decreed that we would be thrown out of our homes. Sometimes when people hear that, they think it sounds farfetched. But those that live in Fort Myers, Florida were shown that reality. Beautiful homes were totally destroyed. They were literally thrown out of their homes. So things like that, has v'shalom, could happen. Of course, although it's a tremendous kapara , we aren't wishing it upon anybody. But God, in His love and His mercy for the Jewish people gives us a Galut of sorts. There's a concept called Miksat Nefesh K'kol Nefesh/ a little bit of the soul is like the whole soul. A little bit of Galut is like the entire Galut. When leave our homes for our Succah, that's an exile. We're not in our homes anymore, we're not on the porch, we don't have our regular luxuries and comforts of home. And that's why it says one is supposed to make his Succah into his Keva/his main thing, and his regular home Arai/temporary , because we're really doing ourselves a favor by going out to the Succah. It's a cleansing process. That's our reframe. Don't look at the Succah as a difficulty, as something that's hard. Look at it as a cleansing process. Look at as a wonderful opportunity to get forgiven for our sins, by sitting out in the Succah. It's Galut. No one wants to be have real Galut. Again, people that lived in Ukraine, experienced real Galut lo Alenu. They were taken out their homes and had to go on to new places and new horizons. We don't want that either. So therefore, look at the Succah as a wonderful opportunity to get an easy kapara . But again, as the Rambam tells us, the main point of Galut is the aspect of humility, that you are humbling yourself. In the days of old, great rabbis such as the Gaon of Vilna, the Chida, the Or HaChaim HaKadosh would go into self- imposed exile. There were no publicized photos in those days, so they weren't easily recognized. They wanted to escape the honor and respect they received in their own towns, so they traveled to new towns where they might be treated like beggars. That was their way of getting atonement. Once, when he was in his thirties, one of Rabbi Ades' friends came to him in the summer Ben Hazmanim, asking if he wanted to go into Galut . At the time, Rabbi Ades and his friend both had young children at home. Rabbi Ades told him, “ You're not looking for Galut, you're looking for a picnic. You just want to escape from your wife and children. ” Galut can be in your own home, because it's all is about humbling yourself. We all need this very important reframe technique, understanding situations that are hard, and reframing them. And one last reframe: Many years ago, we went on our first Torah Center trip to Eretz Yisrael. It was a very memorable event. We went to Meron, to the Arizal's mikveh, and to Sfat on Lag B'Omer day, ..and we went to Rabbi Ades' house straight from Sfat. We got there just as a sun was setting. He asked us what we had done that day, and as we went through our day, he commented a lot of the things that we did. He said, “When a person goes to the Arizal's mikveh, it's very cold. How do you handle it? The answer, he said, is that it says there's a promise from the Arizal that you do teshuva before you die, so you brace yourself and you jump in.” Rabbi Ades said, “ Every time you walk into your house, you should think you're walking into the Arizal's Mikveh. You walk into your house, with the challenges of the children..after a long day. But if you imagine that you're walking into the Arizal's mikveh, it might be cold and icy, but you know, it brings kapara.” And that's the reframe you have to have. So Succot has a wonderful reframe, walking into your house has a wonderful reframe, and the bottom line of all them is to humble yourself to the people around you. And that brings Kapara . Have a wonderful day.

She lives outside of Richmond, Virginia with her golf-pro, Ted Lasso-ish husband, two children, and their tiny 4-lb toy poodle, Wally. Rachel is one of the most deeply creative souls I know. In this episode we talk about the need for vulnerability in our lives, honoring our journeys, and where our art fits in to it all (especially during life changing seasons such as having children or going through a global pandemic.)
