In this mini-episode, we're diving into a critical yet often overlooked aspect of creating powerful group experiences and curriculum: Opening Content and Exercises that Build Engagement and Readiness. Whether you're leading a retreat, teaching a course, or delivering a workshop, how you start sets the tone for everything that follows.  Why is this so essential? Neuroscience and human behavior show us that even the most excited participants can lose momentum before the first session begins. By creating a "container" from the start, you help participants build investment, overcome resistance, and feel safe enough to engage deeply with your content. Without this foundational work, even the most compelling curriculum can fail to deliver its full impact. Episode Highlights: Start with Inspiration: Share why they're here, why you're here, and what's possible through your program. Clarify Intentions: Help participants identify their personal goals and assess their starting points. Foster Connection: Facilitate early interactions to build community and engagement. Create a Safe Container: Use proven strategies to prepare participants emotionally and mentally to receive your content. Success in Action: A real-world example of how these strategies transformed engagement in a program for formerly incarcerated individuals. Have you ever had a client that consistently shows up late for sessions? Or always cancels last minute? Or maybe even a client that all of the sudden has a really bad attitude about what you're discussing in session…or maybe even gets upset at you?   If yes, you're in for a treat! Because we're diving into all of that today as we talk about one of my MOST favorite topics when it comes to being better able to support our clients to create what they want in their lives. Today's topic will also help you support YOURSELF so much more towards all of your personal goals.   In today's episode, we're going to start to look at what I call Client Resistance.    If you're not well equipped to handle and navigate resistance….it can end up VERY not fun for you as the coach or practitioner. In fact, most practitioners these days don't know how to handle resistance…,because they don't really understand resistance. And if you don't understand the client motivation behind resistance and you don't know how to masterfully move your clients through resistance, you can end up feeling drained, tired, frustrated, questioning your confidence and abilities, thinking too much about your client's situation…not to mention, client can become frustrated or angry or lose hope in the work with you.   Not knowing how to navigate clients through Resistance is also a big factor in low retention rates, low referral rates, clients wanting to quit, or putting so many restrictions on who your ideal clients are that you cut out a good percentage of the possible ideal prospects out there.   Navigating Client Resistance is honestly one of the most important topics transformational practitioners need to know about.   Some topics we cover: ==What exactly is Client Resistance & how does it manifest? ==What happens when a client goes into Resistance ==the difference between fear and resistance (very important to note!) ==some psychological underpinning of resistance ==real talk about our own resistance   Enjoy, enjoy!   Also, I mentioned two opportunities to go deeper into today's episode:   6 Steps to Support Client to Navigate Resistance Preview Class   Navigating Client Resistance 4-Week Training Intensive   Resistance Archetypes PDF

Let's say a client hired you so that they could learn to feel more confident and motivated in their work, and in a session, they happen to bring forward an issue about a parenting situation…but you don't have kids or know anything about parenting!   Or, you're working with a client on supporting them to achieve their business goals and the topic of whether or not they should run Facebook ads comes up…but you're not an expert on ads!   We may have a particular expertise and types of goals that we help our clients with, but that doesn't mean that they're only always going to stay on those exact topics in our work together. Life is messier than that – nothing in life is totally compartmentalized. Work relates to home life. And home life relates to work, etc etc. And so a variety of issues are going to come up in your client sessions. And this is how it should be!   Over the decades, as I've supported my clients on the inner and outer work of growing their businesses and leadership, as well as their transformational skills, they've brought forward pretty much every situation under the sun – parenting, caring for aging parents, wanting to leave marriages, deciding if they should move from their hometown, illness, figuring out how to write their one woman show, and on and on. And each and every one of these topics were important in the work we were doing together. And…OF COURSE there is no way I could EVER be an expert in all of these things. And I would end up making myself miserable if I tried. And yet, I've been able to support my clients in every single one of these situations.   How do you do that? How do you support clients in realms and situations that are out of your area of expertise? We explore that topic on today's episode and you're going to walk away with some specific ideas and instructions on what to do next!   Some topics we cover: ==an important shift in understanding what coaching means ==practitioner fears around “being smart enough” ==the difference between consulting and coaching ==Breakthrough questions that help clients find their own answers ==what it means to help clients find resources ==and much more!   If you are loving the podcast, please please take a moment to rate or review us. In so many circles, it's taboo to even talk about Jealousy. It's considered bad and wrong and shameful. But, in the Sacred Depths approach to transformation, nothing is inherently bad or wrong. Everything - every feeling or impulse - that arises inside of us can be used for evolution and finding deeper self-compassion and satisfaction.   And that is why we cross the taboo lines to explore Jealousy in this episode!   Jealousy, when it comes up for yourself or your clients, can be sneaky and cause havoc. It can lead you to be self-sabotage, to not be at the top of your game, to hold yourself back, to be mean to yourself or others…and generally cause some misery.   But Jealousy can also be harnessed and transmuted into aligned power and productivity.   In this episode we break down the nature of jealousy and I give some practical foundational ideas on how to work with it. It's a juicy episode! (And one that will answer some questions, but also in beautiful ways open up many more questions!).   Some topics we cover: ==the nature of jealousy and the many (surprising) ways it expresses itself ==what it means to normalize jealousy ==leaning in to aligned competition as an antidote ==the relationship between jealousy and power ==I share some personal experiences with jealousy and surprising outcomes ==and much more!   This episode has both practical ideas for working with yourself & clients as well as philosophical ideas for you to ponder. Our clients come to us because they want a transformation of some sort. The transformations can be in their outer world - finishing a big project, growing a business, attracting a loving relationship, better managing a team, and beyond. The transformations can also be in their inner worlds: more confidence, more self-love, more consistency, just to name a few. Most coaches and practitioners don't exactly understand the process of transformation and change, and this is why their clients often have wonderful insights and initial motivation, but don't follow through on truly achieving goals. When we understand more deeply how the process of transformation works, we are much more able to guide the space for our clients to experience real change and progress. Some topics we cover: == when and why breakthroughs become useless == the first crucial step to activating transformations == what it takes to be the type of coach who co-creates change == the cycle of the Window of Action and how to harness it ==the amount of time it takes to change If you are loving the podcast, please please take a moment to rate or review us. Helping Your Clients (& Yourself) Work through Fear

Knowing how to support your clients to move through their fear is a game changer if you are a coach, therapist or transformational practitioner.   That's because fear can often stand in the way of your clients taking action towards and achieving the goals they've hired you for. And, when fear rears its head, if not navigated with skill, it can bring your work with your client to a standstill.   Most practitioners try to help clients talk through the fear or to “release” the fear, but neither of these strategies work. Instead, what's required is a process to Befriend the Fear, and to do so in ways that move beyond just the cognitive level of learning & processing.   In this inaugural episode, we dive deep into the human behavior behind fear and some of the most important principles that coaches and practitioners need to know in order to help your clients co-exist in regulated and empowering ways with fear.   Once you learn how to better work with fear, that's when you become poised to co-create even better results with your clients.   As always, through everything you learn about fear in this episode, you will learn a lot about yourself and ways that you can make better friends with fear in your own life.   Some of the topics we cover: ==The ways that fear can show up in your client sessions ==What happens when we pathologize fear ==Where fear comes from ==The benefits of helping clients distinguish between present and past resources ==The principle of risk when fear gets activated ==Discomfort versus pain and how this can help you work with fear ==Why releasing fears isn't viable or safe, and what to do instead   Rate, Review, and Follow on Apple Podcasts   “I love Joanna and The Coaching Revolution!” If you agree, please consider rating and reviewing my show. Going overtime in client sessions is OK….until it isn't. It can create stress and chaos in your schedule, and when it happens persistently it can also lead to resentment of clients. Additionally, it generally doesn't really help your clients.   Many coaches and practitioners get stuck in a cycle of going overtime in sessions, but don't know how to get out of it. Because you don't know how to keep your sessions to the agreed upon time (clients can talk so much!) or because your clients have already gotten used to longer session times.   In this episode, we break down the specific reasons practitioners go overtime in sessions (most of them are not what you think, and you'll be laughing in recognition as soon as you hear them!) and then look at exactly what to do so that going overtime in session is a “once in a while” thing versus a pattern that robs you of your time and energy.   Some of the topics we cover: ==How the coach's beliefs and energetics are the driving factor behind staying on time or going over time ==How feeling not good enough is a surefire way to go overtime in a session ==The very first thing to do in a client session that will help you avoid going over time ==What you need to know about interrupting clients who have gone off course ==How to close a session when you haven't covered everything your client wanted to cover ==What to share with clients who have gotten used to longer sessions   Rate Review and Follow on Apple Podcasts   “I love Joanna and The Coaching Revolution!” If you agree, please consider rating and reviewing my show.
