    Dans le cadre de mes fonctions de professeure à l'École d'orthophonie de l'Université Laurentienne, j'enseigne le cours ORTH 3006 : Perspectives multilingues et multiculturelles en orthophonie, offert en troisième année du baccalauréat. Chaque année, je demande aux étudiants de créer une œuvre artistique inspirée d'un thème abordé dans le cours, accompagnée d'un rapport expliquant leur démarche et la recherche qui soutient leur création. Cette année, Danica Lavigne a choisi de produire un balado en collaboration avec une enseignante de première année, afin d'explorer le thème de l'enseignement en contexte linguistique minoritaire. L'enseignante, qui a préféré rester anonyme, cumule plus de 25 ans d'expérience dans ce domaine. Ensemble, elles discutent de plusieurs sujets, notamment l'enseignement du français comme langue première ou langue seconde auprès d'élèves vivant en milieu minoritaire.

Today I am releasing Season 4 with an episode on one of my favorite topics: bilingualism and multilingualism with Dr. Jasone Cenoz. Dr. Cenoz is a professor of education at the University of the Basque Country. Her research focuses on bilingualism and multilingualism in education and on pedagogical translanguaging. Pedagogical translanguaging is “a theoretical and instructional approach that aims at improving language and content competences in school contexts by using resources from the learner's whole linguistic repertoire. Pedagogical translanguaging is learner-centred and endorses the support and development of all the languages used by learners. It fosters the development of metalinguistic awareness by softening of boundaries between languages when learning languages and content.” (Cenoz and Gorter, 2021).

    This episode is very fitting given that June is Effective Communications Month. Join me as I interview Henry Emeka and CJ, creators and lead facilitators of the Noisy Classroom - Oracy. Both Henry and CJ work with children in Nigeria, Africa to help them improve their communication skills. Traditionally, Nigerian children are taught to modify their native accent in order to sound more American or British. However, the philosophy behind the Noisy Classroom - oracy initiative is to move away from accent modification and to focus more on communication skills and styles in order to improve intelligibility and self-expression. They also talk about how they help children transform their thoughts into expressions. This is done using the following three components: 1) Vocabulary Development 2) Speech-Language Development 3) Social Communication Development "As much as we respect and love our culture, there are some aspects that we have to do away with."     Most people have heard about lasting symptoms of COVID-19 months after the initial symptoms have subsided. Very few of us have heard about the impact of COVID-19 on swallowing. In this episode, I interview Avital Winer, speech and language pathologist and acting profession leader of speech-language pathology and audiology at the Ottawa Hospital, who explains to us how COVID-19 can impact one's swallowing ability and the many challenges that speech-language pathologists must face when caring for their patients. During the episode, we talk about a recent news article that was published, featuring the role of speech-language pathologists in the hospital setting as it pertains to COVID-19: "The speech pathologists helping COVID-19 patients learn how to swallow and speak again". Although speech-language pathologists have always been involved in the care of patients with swallowing difficulties (dysphagia), their role has not always been well understood by other healthcare professionals and the public.

Il nous parle de l'importance de la communication orale et la communication écrite et leur importance dans la vie de tout les jours et toute la vie durant. La RàI est un modèle souvent utilisé dans les écoles. Si vous êtes un parent ou un membre du personnel scolaire, cet épisode vous intéressera sûrement! De plus, la RàI est aussi très utile au niveau préscolaire dans les milieux de garde. She talks about how some tasks may put a high demand on a child's working memory or cognitive load and how that same task might be easy for another child.
