Tout ça nous amène évidemment à parler de la fameuse crise du logement qui ravage le Canada actuellement ainsi que des droits des locataires dans une situation siilaire à celle de Murphy.Puis, Véro avait l'intention de peindre nos doux visages sur des roches pour nous les offrir, mais elle a été happée par de vilaines crampes menstruelles qui l'ont empêchée de réaliser ses oeuvres d'art, alors elle a plutôt opté pour ouvrir une discussion sur notre rapport à l'artisanat. Torr Metals CEO Malcolm Dorsey joined Proactive's Stephen Gunnion after the government of Ontario granted a three-year exploration permit for drilling at its Filion gold project. This significant advancement allows the company to further develop the 260 km² project in northern Ontario, which benefits from excellent infrastructure, including access to the Trans-Canada Highway 11, rail, road, and power grid. The project operates out of Kapuskasing, negating the need for remote exploration camps and enabling low-cost exploration. Dorsey said the project, acquired through staking in October 2023, has shown promising early results. Torr Metals' exploration model identified structural controls and stratigraphy indicative of significant gold deposits. Historical high-grade samples, up to 91g per tonne gold, and initial reconnaissance programs have yielded encouraging results. Six gold soil anomalies were identified, with the largest anomaly having a strike length of 1,200 meters and a width of 250 meters. Soil assays returned up to 1.3g per tonne gold. With the exploration permit, Dorsey said the company plans to drill and extend the soil anomaly potentially to 2.5 km in length. Additional work may include soil sampling and ground magnetic surveys. For 18 months, a teenager allegedly operated a “swatting” service out of his father's California home, where criminals could call in a hoax bomb threat or mass shooting almost as easily as ordering a burger on UberEats. Alan Winston Filion, 17, is suspected of targeting hundreds of high schools, mosques, historically Black churches, US senators and even the US Supreme Court with swatting attacks that placed thousands of people in the crosshairs of heavily armed police response teams. Prosecutors say the 6ft 3in teenager advertised his services under the pseudonym Torswats on the encrypted messaging app Telegram, charging as little as $40 to get someone's gas shut off, $50 for a “major police response”, and $75 for a “bomb threat/mass shooting threat”. Mr Filion would then post chilling audio of the 911 calls on Telegram as a proof of purchase, according to court documents. Torr Metals CEO Malcolm Dorsey joined Steve Darling from Proactive to to share some exciting news about the company's exploration efforts. Torr Metals has identified multiple new gold anomalies through soil assays, with some yielding up to 1.32 grams per tonne of gold. What makes these findings particularly intriguing is that these anomalies have never been drill-tested before. These soil anomalies are coincident with six-kilometer-scale VLF (Very Low-Frequency) conductors that are interpreted as significant shear structures with northeast-southwest and east-west orientations. Fieldwork conducted in 2023 further confirmed that VLF-EM conductors and soil anomalies align with highly prospective stratigraphic contact zones for gold endowment. These zones include mafic volcanics and quartz-feldspar porphyry, accounting for the underlying linear moderate to high magnetic anomalies and flanking low magnetic anomalies, respectively. Dorsey expressed his enthusiasm for these results, emphasizing that they serve as a proof of concept for their exploration model. The findings support Torr Metals' interpretation that the geological setting of the Filion fault is similar to other well-known gold-endowed regional structures that host major deposits in northern Ontario. Currently, Torr Metals is in the process of applying for a drill permit to further investigate these promising targets in 2024. Torr Metals CEO Malcolm Dorsey joined Steve Darling from Proactive to announce the company has The company has successfully acquired the expansive Filion gold project, covering an impressive area of approximately 261 square kilometers. This project is strategically located with easy highway access and holds immense promise. The Filion gold project stands out due to its remarkable geological characteristics. It encompasses a 42-kilometer east-west trending deformation zone, which has been associated with six historical gold occurrences. These occurrences are hosted within a greenstone belt located in Northern Ontario, an area that has been relatively underexplored until now. Le sujet discuté entre les deux étudiantes est l'éveil à l'écrit. Au fil du balado, en faisant un aperçu global du sujet, les étudiantes tenteront de décrire : ce qu'est l'éveil à l'écrit, la conscience phonologique (qui se trouve dans l'éveil à l'écrit) et la conscience à l'écrit (la prochaine étape après l'éveil à l'écrit) ; les étapes et les activités de l'éveil à l'écrit ; et l'importance de l'éveil à l'écrit et l'exposition au langage écrit dès un jeune âge. Les étudiantes gardent les parents des jeunes enfants en tête ; soit les nouveaux parents qui veulent s'informer sur l'éveil à l'écrit chez leurs très jeunes enfants jusqu'aux parents des enfants qui sont prêts à franchir la prochaine étape de leur développement langagier au niveau du langage écrit.

Guillaume Filion recently published a preprint in which he applies generating functions, a concept from analytic combinatorics, to estimating the optimal seed length for read mapping. In this episode, Guillaume and I attempt to explain the core concepts from analytic combinatorics and why they are useful in modeling sequences. Links: Guillaume's preprint: Analytic combinatorics for bioinformatics I: seeding methods Once upon a BLAST Guillaume's blog, «The Grand Locus» Dan Gusfield's home page featuring the fast fourier transform lectures I mention in the podcast After we recorded the podcast, Guillaume wrote to me to clarify the relationship between read mapping and BLAST: I looked into my notes about BLAST. The problem that it solves is the following: “Given that a local alignment has score S, what is the probability that it does not contain a word of score T or greater”? The background work of Karlin and Altschul is used to give a statistical significance for S (what is the probability that a “Smith-Waterman random walk” starting at height 0 would reach height S, i.e. what is the probability that aligning two random proteins would yield a score S). The authors write in the original paper “Theory does not yet exist to calculate the probability q that such segment pair will contain a word pair with a score of at least T. However, one argument suggests that q should depend exponentially upon the score of the MSP”. This is the part that I did not remember well. MSP stands for Maximal Segment Pair, this is the “longest fragment” with “highest score” in the alignment. I thought that Karlin and Altschul solved this part as well, but the authors just go empirical and they calibrate the relationship between T and S with simulations. I realize a little bit better now that my work is precisely about this problem that the authors of BLAST could not solve, but as you pointed out, I am attacking only a very specific sub-case that is much easier because the models of sequencing error are much simpler than protein evolution. BLAST is concerned with local alignment, so it wants to get all the hits with an MSP score above S. Short read mapping just wants the true location of the read, which does not really have the notion of a score S. But still, mathematically, it is equivalent to the case where S is a constant that depends only on the read size and the distribution of the score T depends only on the seed length and the error rate. I have a few ideas of how to use analytic combinatorics to solve the problem for proteins, but it is mostly complicated because the variable of interest T is a fractional numbers and not an integer… So what is different from BLAST? The right answer (I think) is that BLAST finds all the hits with an MSP above statistical background, but it says nothing of the probability that the true location contains such an MSP, so it is hard to calibrate the heuristic for that specific problem. In reality, the parallel with BLAST is just the basic strategy: make a statistical model for your problem and use it to calibrate the heuristic.
